Hurricane Milton made landfall Wednesday night along Florida's Gulf Coast as a Category 3 storm. It's expected to be one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the U.S. in more than 100 years, with sustained winds of over 120 miles an hour. As Milton moved closer to shore Wednesday, strong inland winds triggered tornado warnings across parts of Florida, and at least one tornado was reported near Fort Myers. WAD's own Josie Duffy Rice got in contact with two friends who evacuated from western Florida ahead of the storm. Later in the show, Abrahm Lustgarten, climate reporter for ProPublica and author of the book ‘On the Move: The Overheating Earth and the Uprooting of America,' talks about the ways climate change is reshaping how — and where — we live. And in headlines: Vice presidential candidates Tim Walz and J.D. Helping Ukrainian evacuees become truck drivers, released by Alberta on 15 August 2024   | Good day ladies and gentlemen, this is IRC news, I am Joy Stephen, a certified Canadian Immigration practitioner, and I bring to you this Provincial News Bulletin from the province of Alberta. This recording originates from the Polinsys studios in Cambridge, Ontario. |   Addressing the truck driver shortage in Alberta is crucial as the lack of drivers affects everything from retail goods to industrial supplies. This shortage not only hinders business operations and growth but also inflates costs for consumers and industries alike. By filling these essential positions, Alberta can help lower costs for consumers, support local businesses and ensure the smooth movement of goods across the province.  Alberta currently has a shortage of about 4,000 commercial truck drivers, which has been a factor in ongoing supply chain issues over the past few years. In response, Alberta's government has amended the eligibility criteria in the Class 1 Experience and Equivalency Program to allow Ukraine evacuees who hold or have held category CE licences to reduce the time and cost to obtain their Alberta Class 1 driver's licences.  "Allowing Ukrainian evacuees with truck driving experience to enter the commercial driving industry is a win-win. It will help alleviate the ongoing driver shortage and support evacuees from Ukraine who have had so much to deal with over the past two and a half years."  Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors Transportation and Economic Corridors will also expand the Driving Back to Work (DBTW) grant criteria to include Ukraine evacuees. As part of the implementation of the new learning pathway in 2025-26, Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors will monitor driver competency to inform possible expansion of Class 1 driver licence recognition to other foreign countries to further reduce the truck driver shortage in Alberta.    | You can always access past news from the Province of Alberta by visiting this link: https://myar.me/tag/ab/. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Editor David Horovitz and military reporter Emanuel Fabian join host Amanda Borschel-Dan on today's episode. Fabian updates us on the condition of the two police officers who were attacked just outside the Jerusalem Old City's Damascus Gate this morning. The IDF has announced that the Gaza Strip is now divided into north and south. How does this clear demarcation affect IDF operations? An Israeli civilian was killed in an anti-tank guided missile attack launched from Lebanon at an area near the northern community of Kibbutz Yiftah, bringing the civilian death toll on the Israeli side of the Lebanon border to two in attacks by Hezbollah and Palestinian gunmen since October 7. Fabian explains the tit-for-tat from Hezbollah. The Jordanian kingdom announced that its air force air-dropped vital medical supplies to a field hospital in the Gaza Strip. We only have initial information about IDF coordination. Fabian shares what we know. Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu said Sunday on Radio Kol Berama that one of Israel's options in the war against Hamas could be to drop a nuclear bomb on the Gaza Strip. How were his remarks received, both here in Israel and abroad? On October 7, Hamas attacked Israel on from land, sea, air -- and social media. Horovitz weighs in on how Israel is faring in the war for public opinion. For the latest updates, please look at The Times of Israel's ongoing live blog. As a safety response to the massive wildfires currently threatening the Northwest Territories in Canada, officials in Yellowknife had ordered the residents to evacuate the city by noon last Friday.   To ensure that those that are being evacuated have a place to go, The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services team has been working hard to ensure Salvation Army locations in BC and Alberta, are prepared to receive citizens fleeing the smoke and fire.   Dan Millar, assistant territorial director for Emergency Disaster Services, says EDS teams have been set up in nearby provinces, as the mass evacuation continues. For those within the center of the emergency, the priority is to assist everyone in getting out of the city, especially the most vulnerable. The best way to assist The Salvation Army in their work is through monetary donations. The funds received for this cause will be used to aid the communities impacted by the wildfires across Canada this year. To offer your support, visit donate.salvationarmy.ca

The Internment of Japanese Americans during World War II & the Role of Attorneys at the Relocation Centers

During World War II, over 120,000 Japanese Americans, most of whom were US citizens, were forcibly removed from their homes in California, Washington, and Oregon, and imprisoned in relocation centers, small towns surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards. The War Relocation Authority, the government agency created by FDR that oversaw the mass relocation and internment, appointed a project attorney for each of the 10 camps. These white attorneys served the conflicted position of both advising the project director and running a legal aid for the Japanese American prisoners.  Joining me in this episode is legal historian Eric L. Muller, the Dan K. Moore Distinguished Professor of Law in Jurisprudence and Ethics at the University of North Carolina School of Law and author of Lawyer, Jailer, Ally, Foe: Complicity and Conscience in America's World War II Concentration Camps. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode music is “Longing for Japan,” by srento, licensed for use via Pond5. The episode image is “Lone Pine, Calif. Apr. 1942. Beginning in 1940 thousands of German children were evacuated to camps in the countryside to avoid the bombs of World War Two. These camps were seen as safe places where they could continue their education but also where Nazi beliefs could be taught. Alex Collins has listened to archive recordings from "Haus der Geschichte der Bundersrepublik Deutschland" in Bonn one of Germany's national history museums and hears the stories of former camp residents Gunter Stoppa and Klaus Reimer.
