A recent string of high-dollar financial gifts is continuing at Morningside University in Sioux City.
Kendal Niemeier was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for her commitment and passion on and off the court and field. Being able to make unique lifelong memories with her teammates in every sport has been the aspect she loves most about high school sports. Growing up and playing with the same group of girls has created strong friendships that allow her to have great team chemistry and excel in all of her sports. Kendal competes in basketball, volleyball, softball, track, and dance team. She is involved in FFA, student council, National Honor Society, and vocal jazz through choir. Outside of school, she is a Youth in Philanthropy and Silver Lakers 4-H Club member. Kendal expressed how it has been a privilege to be a member of the Youth in Philanthropy for all four years of her high school career. Throughout her time serving as a member of this organization, she has helped raise $215,00+ to grant out to local non-profit organizations. Another major community service project she has been actively participating in is Adopt-a-Family. She has helped "adopt" 7 families and 4 individuals through a youth group, 4-H, Youth in Philanthropy, and National Honor Society. She has also been cleaning a mile stretch of ditches on the highway that leads out of her town from 7th grade through senior year as a member of FFA, 4H, and class community service projects. Lastly, she has been involved in helping with fundraisers for the pool and bike trail in her town, as well as many activities that have helped nurture the younger generation. Agriculture is more than just farming to Kendal. The world of agriculture has opened many doors for her and has left her with lifelong advice and experiences. She enjoys being included in this aspect of the agricultural world through showing and raising animals at her county fair and participating in contests and fundraisers relating to the farm world. Overall, being introduced to the agriculture industry through her involvement in FFA has taught her many life lessons, introduced her to many new people and places, and sparked many new interests that she wouldn't have had without agriculture. Kendal plans on attending Morningside University in the fall of 2025 to play basketball and major in biology (pre-dentistry). The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference recently held a media day focusing on women's wrestling, providing a platform for coaches across the conference to discuss the upcoming season. Melissa Nelson is a woman after our own hearts here at Growing Small Towns. She is a lifelong small-town girl and rural champion who uses her love of agriculture, community development, and creativity to inspire ways to get involved in small towns. About Melissa Melissa Nelson is a Nebraska farm and cattle gal who transplanted to Northwest Iowa after college to build an agricultural education non-profit and marry an Iowa farm boy. Her farm background and creative, entrepreneurial spirit allow her to put a unique spin on everyday items in her small business, Hungry Canyon. Melissa assisted in the foundation of the non-profit, Siouxland Agriculture in the Classroom and served as Director of the organization from 2013-2018. In 2018, she began serving as Externship Coordinator for the Applied Agricultural and Food Studies Department at Morningside University. Melissa and her husband Mark have two boys--Roy and Charlie-- seventh generation farm kids and lovers of tractors and cows. They live on a farm near Correctionville, Iowa. During his tenure at Morningside, he has served as Associate Dean for Performing Arts, Music Department Chair, Director of Choral Activities, and artistic director for the Betty Ling Tsang Summer Performance Series. Prior to his appointment at Morningside, Heath Weber worked in public school music education at all levels, K-12.A South Dakota native, he found his home in Sioux City, Iowa, first teaching at East High School for 10 years before assuming his position at Morningside. His comprehensive choral program at East was the largest student organization in Iowa, engaging one-third of the student body at EHS. His competitive show choir, The Headliners, was voted one of America's top three favorite show choirs in Parade Magazine's first contest.As a performer, Weber has performed as a member of the GRAMMY-nominated South Dakota Chorale, an organization for which he has also served as Board President.
