Why doesn't this model fit for today's learners and today's economy?Undoing 150 years of how we do education seems daunting. How do districts and schools might start their journey? What do they need to be successful and what might be standing in their way?How do we see AI playing a role in helping bring about the changes you've described today? We discuss examples of how AI is already being used in education and how it might be used in the future?Key takeaways from this conversation include:Despite feeling like change isn't happening rapidly in education, there are growing movements and momentum picking up.COVID-19 has played a role in accelerating some changes within the education system.AI tools have the potential to help educators create more personalized lesson plans and experiences for their students. If you are interested in learning more about how to customize learning experiences for yourself or others, you don't want to miss this episode!About Our GuestAndrea Stewart has 12 years in personalized, competency-based learning and 25 years in education, both PK-12 and in teacher/administrator preparation. What are some of the competencies that you want to develop or improve? How can you design a learning pathway that suits your needs and interests? How can you involve other stakeholders in your learning journey? How can you measure your progress and celebrate your achievements?

See the show notes and a full transcript at https://www.coolcatteacher.com/e747 Advancement Courses sponsored this show. All opinions are my own. Dawn Stansbury - Bio As Submitted I am currently working as an Instructional Designer for Advancement Courses, A Wiley Brand. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education, earned at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. My Masters Degree was earned at University of South Dakota in the area of Educational Administration. During my years of working in elementary education, I spent time as a classroom teacher as well as a school leader, all with the Sioux City Community School District in Sioux City, Iowa. I enjoyed teaching for six years in grades 2-5 as well as working as a reading specialist. Although I loved teaching children, I spent the next thirteen years of my career as the elementary principal of a K-5 school. During my time as an elementary principal, I led my building of 700 students and 80 staff members to becoming one of the first elementary STEM schools in the state of Iowa, offering many specialized programs to our students. As a STEM school, we were proud to have the 2017 Northwest Iowa STEM Teacher of the Year, as well as a state of Iowa Teacher of the Year top five finalist. I am passionate about offering educational opportunities to students and educators alike, realizing that the stronger teachers are, the better the learning opportunities for students. When we offer current and impactful learning to teachers, our students, families, and communities' benefit. As an educational leader, I recognize that it is impossible for administrators to be all-knowing on all aspects of education. Advancement Courses offers valuable resources to educational leaders so that they can best meet the needs of their teachers and allowing those teachers to best meet the needs of their students. I am proud to be a part of providing these resources to the world of education so that we can more efficiently and appropriately differentiate the ways in which our educators are learning.

Melissa discusses her school's evolution from a for-profit afterschool extracurricular program in 2001 into a non-profit, full-time academic and arts conservatory today. She initially pursued a career in the performing arts, and after 12 years of running a performing arts school, she realized the burnout rate of students. She wanted to do something to help students who weren't reaching their full potential as artists, academics, or citizens. Melissa goes on to share her recommendations for more student-centered schools. She discusses mindfulness practices such as breathing, meditation, and learning how to reprogram our brains to deregulate their nervous systems to avoid burnout. She also touches on a few specific student success stories. C’mon, it’s lovely weather for a podcast together with you! In our fa-la-la-last episode of 2020, Jocelyn and Bradley are celebrating Sir Isaac Newton’s 378th birthday with some Newtonmas caroling and a rousing discussion of physicists’ favorite fetish . . . We are referring, of course, to unification. The hosts consider whether the desire for a singular “theory of everything” can be traced back to Newton’s work, which was the first to bring the terrestrial and celestial realms under the same set of physical laws. They discuss the ironic fact that gravity—the original unifying force in the cosmos—is now the major obstacle to achieving a single, unified theory in physics. Finally, they consider possible motivations behind the quest for unification, and they debate whether a single, overarching theory is possible or even desirable. During my time as an elementary principal I led my building of 700 students and 80 staff members to becoming one of the first elementary STEM schools in the state of Iowa, offering many specialized programs to our students. As a STEM school we were proud to have the 2017 Northwest Iowa STEM Teacher of the Year, as well as a state of Iowa Teacher of the Year top five finalist. I am passionate about offering educational opportunities to students and educators alike, realizing that the stronger teachers are, the better the learning opportunities for students. Real estate is a very competitive business and the real estate podcast area is a very competitive category within podcast directories. Brad Larsen shares his successes, authority, and opportunities that have come because of his podcast. Brad talks about creating The Property Management Mastermind, Property Management Mastermind Show and The Property Management Conference. His story, advice, and humility are truly inspiring. Brad’s advice is very helpful and timely for everybody. Brad Larsen was born and raised in Iowa – his parents were both school teachers. He graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM and was commissioned as a 2LT in the US Army Infantry in 1996. He then graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa in 1998. He was able to earn a baseball scholarship for both schools as a shortstop. Brad later earned his MBA from the University of Phoenix in San Antonio, TX in 2011. After serving on active duty in the Army as an officer in the Infantry, Brad left the military as a Captain in 2002 and moved to San Antonio to pursue his interests in real estate. He has been managing single-family homes since 2004. Brad is a member of the San Antonio Board of Realtors (SABOR), Texas Association of Realtors (TAR), National Association of Realtors (NAR), and the National Association of Residential Property Managers (NARPM®). Brad has been licensed since 2003 and has earned top honors in real estate to include the Platinum Top 50 award for agents in San Antonio. Brad is married to Leah Larsen and has two children.  Brad is so selfless even though at times he tries to argue differently and invites everyone to come on this journey and learn along with him. This episode is packed full of great advice and tips for real estate, podcasting, and life in general.  Show Notes: [03:37] Brad shares what led him into the world of real estate.  [04:06] Brad created the Property Management Mastermind where property managers can share ideas, thoughts, and collaborations on a national scale. Then he created his podcast, The Property Management Mastermind Show.  [05:03] Brad’s podcast has opened up a lot of doors and opportunities including other business ventures and speaking gigs.  [06:13] Brad looks at podcasting as an audio blog.  [07:11] Brad shares how his business looked before his podcast and how it has expanded his business ventures.  [08:43] Brad started a Facebook group and now has 8,600 members. This is another advertising avenue for getting the podcast shows out to more people.  [10:09] Another opportunity the podcast has facilitated is a national annual conference called The Property Management Mastermind Conference.  [10:32] All of his business ventures have stemmed from simply starting a podcast.  [13:03] Brad really wants to improve and benefit the real estate industry.  [15:40] On his podcast he tries to interview folks that he would want to understand better because likely others will also.  [16:49] Brad started his own podcast so he could answer the questions he wanted to answer for the community. It was a better option for him than a webinar.  [18:42] The podcast was a giant advertisement for his in-person live conference.  [20:04] Brad’s next live conference, Property Management Mastermind Conference, will be in March 2021 in Las Vegas.  [21:49] Brad has a Facebook Live every day to discuss current issues and how they affect renters and property managers.  [24:13] The current issues will be short-lived, so we should have a quick spike back up when this is over.  [26:08] The dollars are in the change. We are in the middle of change, so how we embrace it is going to be part of our attitude. We need to make it work for us.  [28:29] If home prices go down, investors will create the bottom. It creates the basement and that it is as low as the market goes.  [31:44] Brad recommends investing in residential single-family homes.   [34:12] Brad has sponsors for his podcast that pay monthly or annually for commercials spots. This has helped to offset the cost of quality productions like Pro Podcast Solutions.  [36:55] Finding the next good guest has been Brad’s biggest podcast challenge.  [37:25] Brad suggest putting out content that is timeless, so people can go out to it years down the road.  [39:24] Brad got used to podcasting, by creating Youtube narrations and videos for his real estate business.  [40:12] Brad’s advice is to look at the competition. Brad looked to see how many podcasts were talking about property management before he started.  [41:19] Don’t let your fear of podcasting intimidate you.  [42:33] The goal of his podcast is just a bigger advertising campaign. It is important to tie podcasting in with other ideas and ventures.  [44:01] Brad set a goal several years ago to make a million dollars a year. He is a long way, but he is getting on the right track.  [46:02] Brad suggests checking out one of the first episodes of his podcast. His episode with Tim Melton has been the most downloaded episode.  [46:21] Brad has found that doing live interviews in a remote location is very difficult, so he utilizes Zoom to record his podcast episodes.  [48:13] Darrell's Takeaways: Brad’s advice was really helpful and timely for everybody. He gave great advice for those who are landlords, tenants, and even those looking to get into income property. Brad recommended going hyperlocal with your podcast to really get involved with your community. He talked about using his podcast as a way to create opportunities and his authority. Because of his authority, he was able to create the Property Management Mastermind Conference. He is seeing a lot of success with his conference because of the authority he is establishing because of his relationships and podcast. Brad gave a tip to try and make content that is timeless. It is more important now to think about this then it was a month ago. Sometimes it is a good move to create content about current issues and sometimes it is not. Make sure you are using terminology, phrases, and titles that are not going to date and make your content seem like it is no longer relevant in the long term.  Links and Resources: Pro Podcast Solutions Property Management Mastermind Property Management Mastermind Show Rent Werx Property Management Mastermind on Facebook Property Management Mastermind Conference Bigger Pockets Brrrr Technique Robert Kiyosaki Brad’s episode with Tim Melton

In 2003, I walked into The University of Santa Monica to embark on the journey of receiving a masters in spiritual psychology.  As a mom with two little girls at home, I was riddled with guilt as I left one weekend a month, venturing out of mommy mode into ALL ABOUT ME.  At the time, I really didn’t know what to expect. The only certainty I felt was that my life would change forever; and it most definitely did. Where to begin…   One weekend a month, we were taught a skill and then applied it in trio format experientially with 220 other like-minded soul tribe members.  We dove deep into our studies, completely reprogramming ourselves and dismantling how we viewed the world. Our belief systems and everything we were raised to believe would be called into question.  Like many, the typical goal line in life was the only way I knew how to navigate. We’re raised to believe that obtaining the college degree, the house, the kids, the perfect marriage, having the ability to travel, feeding the ego, and denying our souls genuine happiness is the only formula for happiness and success. I wholeheartedly lived by the shallowness of this mindset until Ron and Mary Hulnick showed up in my life. The pioneers and founders of USM, the soul centered approach to living, changed by perception of myself entirely. I had yet to discover that I was a spiritual being having a human experience until I stepped foot in this program and my world was flipped upside down. Or rather, right side up.  Finally, I was seeing everything through a different lens, and manufacturing a life dictated only by my own rules. For the first time, I was allowing my heart mind to be the ruler of my domain and my soul the compass to guide the way. It was the biggest gift I had ever given myself and I am so excited to share the woman-- who forever changed my life-- with you. She was my spiritual mentor, someone I admire so much, with qualities that I knew would one day would become a part of me as I navigated my way as a spiritual being having a human experience. Everything I knew up until this moment was simply a compilation of others’ projections of me. I can honestly admit that I never knew who I truly was. My sense of self was in shambles, my purpose was clouded, and I wasn’t aware of how to be fully present in my body without the tools and skills USM provided to teach me to live from my heart mind.  This was the beginning of my life’s work to love myself like I’ve never been loved, to know myself like I’ve never known how, and to build friendships with portions of myself that I often used to run from. As I began to integrate and live from this place, I understood the meaning of gratitude in all its grace. My heart overflowed with emotion as I walked up the stairs to Mary’s office to discuss how to stay in our loving, be loyal to our souls, and find purpose and meaning in our lives. This conversation will leave your heart wanting more and your soul speaking to you. Please give yourself the gift of this talk as we share the journey into waking up from the past, evolving into YOU, and knowing that there is another perspective to life. What an honor to share this being of light Dr. Mary Hulnick!  ________________________________________ Educational background: Doctor of Philosophy – Iowa State University, Ames, 1971. Bruce Allen recalls an instance when his dad coached the Washington Redskins that demonstrates football's impact on Our Town~ ". . .the one thing my dad was real proud of, and Mayor Washington was proud of, when we beat Dallas on that New Year's Eve game, in the NFC Championship game, it was the only day, New Year's Day, New Year's Eve, that had not one crime registered in Washington D.C., not one crime." Bruce Allen, President, Washington Redskins and Andy Ockershausen, host of Our TownAndy Ockershausen: Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town. And we're a special broadcast today and a special opportunity for me to talk to the people that are important in our life. Particularly with the most sterling franchise in national football, the Washington Redskins. The president of the Washington Redskins, Bruce Allen. And Bruce, I go back so far with you, but fortunately, it was your life, not mine. Because I was there when you started more or less. But, the Redskins are important to Our Town, obviously. It's the most important franchise in the world to me. But you brought so much back to Our Town and for that we're so grateful. Bruce Allen: Well, Andy, thank you. I don't think the Allen family can thank Washington enough for the thrills that we've had growing up, and the Redskins have benefited from the greatest fan base in this nation. Andy Ockershausen: And the greatest management now that you're back. We were so impressed that you came back and got a hold of this franchise and the situation, and you rejoined the broadcast to WMAL, which is my heart and soul. But that was so great for everybody, Bruce. People can now hear their favorite team. Bruce Allen: Well, a radio program ought to have an audience, right? It really felt like coming home. I've heard the advertisements, but WMAL is part of our great history and we're proud to be back. Andy Ockershausen: Oh, boy. Well, I don't wanna talk football. I wanna talk ... Your family was so special to the community. Your mom, and I knew your grandmother and grandfather and sat with them at some football games. That was special because I don't think they ever really understood what was going on, but they were delightful. Bruce Allen: No, every- Andy Ockershausen: Your grandfather was in the wine business. Bruce Allen on Family History Bruce Allen: He was in the wine business and none of us drink wine in the family, which is interesting, but special people. I've said it any time I can. I've had the great- Andy Ockershausen: They lived in Africa, in Tunisia, right? Bruce Allen: Tunisia and Paris. Andy Ockershausen: That's right. I know they lived on the mainland also. Bruce Allen: But I've had the greatest role models in our family to live by, and I can't thank the people enough. Andy Ockershausen: Very prolific. I know he went through a terrible time during the war. He told us some of the stories and so forth when I heard this from your mom. But Bruce, thinking about your dad who was so ... He's so tied up in life and football, how he ever ... What he'd do? He chased your mother all over the world more or less to marry him, right? He went to Tunisia or France or someplace to beg her to get married. Bruce Allen: Well, it was a cute story. She was visiting friends in America, and my dad was a head coach at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. And why someone from Paris, France on a tour of the United States would visit Sioux City, Iowa, I don't know, but I'm very happy that that happened and the tour bus went through there. He was a delegate from Culpeper, and I said 'Oh, you're chewing tobacco here in public.' He says, 'You got to be yourself.' There's no better advice." Susan Brown Allen, and Senator George Allen at Our Town Season 2 Launch Party Andy Ockershausen: This Our Town. This is Andy Ockershausen and I've known our next guest for close to 50 years. It goes so fast. His name is a household name to anyone who as ever lived in Our Town for even a few years. His father was a big deal in Our Town, and our guest was an even bigger name in politics and government. He was a senator, governor, member of the House of Representatives. I mean, I don't know what he hasn't done. He wasn't born here, but his impact on the State of Virginia and Our Town was legendary. Welcome Governor, Senator, Felix Allen. What's in a Name? - George Allen Legacy in Our Town George Allen: George Allen. Andy Ockershausen: George. George Allen: Felix was my grandfather's name. Andy Ockershausen: I knew that. I met your grandfather when they came to a game. I'll get into that with you in a minute. And your grandmother. George that's incredible. I was wondering, were you a junior and Janice found you as Felix. I love the name. George Allen: Yeah. My father's middle name was Herbert so - Andy Ockershausen: Yes. I knew that. George Allen: So we had different middles names so - Andy Ockershausen: George H. Allen. George Allen: Yep. Andy Ockershausen: Your dad was certainly a legend to Our Town and what he did for us, and to have you come along ... It's just unbelievable George. The name means so much in Washington. I think that name helped you get elected a couple of times didn't it? George Allen: Yeah. Bunch of Redskins fans. Cowboy fans would always give me a hard time with it, and fortunately the Redskins when my father was there, never had a losing season and he brought in a winning tradition for the Redskins. And if it weren't for my father going to the Washington Redskins, I would not be in Virginia. To be honest with you - The Road to Our Town Andy Ockershausen: I can understand that. But you were born in Whittier and your dad was coaching there? George Allen: Yeah. My parents were married in Sioux City, Iowa and his first head coaching job was at Morningside College. He's originally from Michigan near Detroit - Andy Ockershausen: I knew that. George Allen: And any rate, I guess during the period my wife ... My wife. My mother was pregnant with me during that period, then I was dropped in Whittier. And so he was head coach at Whittier College. They have the worst, least fierce name for a team. The Poets. The Fighting Poets. And you know we're just like pathetic. What we're going to kill you with rhyme. But that team - Andy Ockershausen: But that was Richard Nixon's school George Allen: Yeah Richard Nixon went ... He wasn't there at the same time as my father, but that's when they first became acquainted with one another. The other great thing at Whittier is in their conference, they played Occidental and Jack Kemp - Andy Ockershausen: Quarterback. George Allen: Was a quarterback at Occidental. And out of the people who motivated me to get involved in politics, the most two inspirational people to me were Ronald Reagan, and Jack Kemp. And Kemp coming from the world of football really was very consistent with my way of looking at a meritocracy. And some of this you reflect on later in life, but growing up in football myself and my father's teams, and they were all very close. Andy Ockershausen: You part of it. The whole team. George Allen: Yeah. And even with the Bears. Those were first training camps when my father was an assistant coach with the Bears and from second to eighth grade ...

Meet this week awesome studentpreneur: Josh Doering, 20 years old, Student in Business at Morningside College and entrepreneur at Seed Slide in Iowa. For more info StudentPreneurPodcast.com Wrap:Each studentpreneur's story is different and what works for some people doesn't for others, however I'd like to point out of few things in Josh 's journey that are similar to the studentpreneurs I have interviewed: Josh saw an opportunity through his dad’s business and he leveraged his dad’s connections. He paired up with an experienced partner, which can be a good thing. Josh understands the power of his student card and leverages it to the maximum for not just discount but reaching out to experienced entrepreneurs. He is another great example that Startup Weekend like competitions are a great trigger, so apply to one! Finally he maximizes his passion: he is a student athlete, student entrepreneur and VP of the entrepreneurship club. Are you still complaining because you are a busy student? Tips: - Learn to network, don’t be afraid- Attend a Startup Weekend- Use your student card to your benefit- Never Give Up U to support U: Get entrepreneurs in the classrooms to share their experience and become mentors. Changing Business As Usual To Change The World Click Here for the resources from our interview with Scott Boyer “There's something we could do to use a for-profit company in the United States as the financial engine but work with a not-for-profit to provide support to under resourced patients around the world.”-Scott Boyer Scott Boyer spent 27 years working in the pharmaceutical business and was familiar with the sales of products in all areas of the world. It was during this time that he realized that the wealthiest countries had the most significant sales, but the “rest of the world”, the ROW countries, where the majority of the people live, didn’t have access to life-changing medications or treatment. Join us as we talk with Scott about his vision for helping people living with epilepsy in under-resourced areas of the world. Through the ROW Foundation, which he founded in 2014, Scott has united the for-profit sector with the not-for-profit sector to make a difference in the lives of those who otherwise could not get medical care. What you will learn: How to make a difference using what you already know. How to discern when the time is right to take a risk. How to step out in faith in a way that just might change the world. How you can support the ROW Foundation “I want to do whatever I can to give it back, to build this model to help under-resourced people. And basically spread love, be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ and help those less fortunate around the world that, honestly, could be treated very easily with inexpensive medications.” -Scott Boyer Resources: The Halftime Institute ROW Pharmaceuticals ROW's Third World Initiatives Bio: Scott Boyer has almost three decades of experience in the pharmaceutical industry and has led the sales and marketing efforts for numerous branded drugs for Abbott and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Scott has a passion for creating a pharmaceutical model that provides medications to all patients. His education includes a B.S. in Business Administration and Management from Morningside College.
