On this final episode of the season, Stephanie Shonekan brought in a special guest: her daughter, Ojurere Shonekan. Together, they unpack “Emotion,” a song by the Bee Gees released in 1994. Destiny's Child covered it in 2001. The song is a vulnerable confession that the loss of a relationship is taking a serious emotional toll. As Stephanie and Ojurere discuss the song and its reinterpretation from disco to R&B, they take some time to reflect on their own shared memories of loss.
Stephanie Shonekan sat down with her sister dean, Kimberly Griffin, to talk about “Lately,” a classic breakup song that Stevie Wonder released in 1980. The song itself is a crushing glimpse into a relationship that's slowly becoming one-sided. And when Jodeci covered the song in 1993, the group members infused it with their own range of emotion (because there's lots of it to go around during a breakup, even the one-sided kind). In this episode, Stephanie and Kimberly break down the artists' different approaches to “Lately” and reminisce over the era of ‘90s boy groups.
On this episode, Tom Flynn joins host Stephanie Shonekan to talk about “You Can't Hurry Love,” an original song by The Supremes that Phil Collins covered in 1982. Though the songs were released a couple decades apart, the message is timeless – and, perhaps a bit frustrating: love takes time. Tom and Stephanie discuss their memories of youth, wanting love and how the song can stand as a light-hearted reminder to hold on.
Heather Gray joins Stephanie Shonekan during this episode to discuss the Bette Midler and Eddie and Gerald Levert versions of “Wind Beneath My Wings,” a song about love, death and what it does to those who live on. It's a ballad that especially resonates with people who lost loved ones to the September 11 attacks in 2001. And in this episode, Stephanie and Heather also discuss how this song helps them treasure their relationships with their parents.
This week's rounds are Music (Covers), Fictional Plants, Archaic Units (Quickfire), and Places. The music is Physical Plant, with a song called Bad Prescription.
The third season of Cover Story with Stephanie Shonekan is kicking off with a guest who's pretty familiar with the show by now: our recording engineer, Nat Kuhn. Nat and Stephanie discuss “Killing Me Softly” and the power music holds to make us feel known, even at a level that's surprisingly personal. Plus, Nat plugs in his bass to bring you an in-studio performance that mashes up elements of both Roberta Flack and The Fugees' versions of the song.
This week's rounds are Music (Covers), Hands, Movie Debuts (Quickfire), and Music Too. The music is Hands.mp3 by Erothug.

This is Cover Story with Stephanie Shonekan, a podcast where we take apart the song covers we love and take a deep dive into the stories behind them. Today's guest is a good friend and colleague, Dr. Keona Ervin. She's a professor in the Department of History at the University of Missouri, and also someone I've talked with at length about music. And so when I came up with the concept of the show, I knew she had to be one of my first guests. And so I reached out and asked her to choose a song to chat about. And that choice? Donny Hathaway's live cover of Yesterday by the Beatles.
This is Cover Story with Stephanie Shonekan, a podcast where we take apart the song covers we love and take a deep dive into the stories behind them. Janis Joplin's Piece of My Heart remains one of the most iconic songs of the ‘60s. Released in 1968, it reached #12 on Billboard Hot 100, thanks in part to Joplin's impassioned and unique vocal delivery. At the time, Billboard called it “dynamite”. It's remembered as one of her most popular songs. And yet, it wasn't hers at all. Just a year earlier, Erma Franklin -- as in older sister to Aretha Franklin -- released her version. It didn't do nearly as well, peaking at #62 on Billboard's Pop Singles Chart. So which one's the better version?
This is Cover Story with Stephanie Shonekan, a podcast where we take apart the song covers we love and take a deep dive into the stories behind them. Today, I'm chatting with my daughter Faremala Shonekan to talk about a song we both love…Before I Let Go, first released by Frankie Beverly and Maze and covered by Beyonce.
This is Cover Story with Stephanie Shonekan, a podcast where we take apart the song covers we love and take a deep dive into the stories behind them. Today, I'm chatting with my good friend, Dr. Brandon Boyd, who is, up to this point, the only professional musician I've had on this show. And the song we'll be discussing is one of my favorites, actually, one I had in mind when I first conceived of the idea behind the show. And that song? I Will Always Love You
This is Cover Story with Stephanie Shonekan, a podcast where we take apart the song covers we love and take a deep dive into the stories behind them. Nothing Compares 2 U was written by Prince in 1984 for his band, the Family. One version was recorded in 1984, but wasn't actually released until only recently...in 2018. Instead, the song debuted on the Family's 1985 self-titled album, released under the Paisley Park Records label. Neither version had much of a splash. Fast forward 5 years when, in 1990, a 24 year old Irish singer-songwriter by the name of Sinéad O'Connor released her version, and it became a breakout hit, thanks in part to the song's music video, made up almost entirely of a closeup shot of the singer's face. So, which one is the better version? Stephanie talks to her good friend Jeremy Root...about the songs... how they compare to one another, and by the end, they'll reveal their top pick.
Lyd the SBW follows the sample trail of a 70s soul song about friends with benefits as it morphs into a 90s song of friends with benefits nostalgia, to unbreakable love and Polish hip hop in the 2000s and ending with ‘you don't want to fall in love with me cause I will flip your whole way of being' in 2010.The SpaceTimeMusic theme music is a sample of the Ana-Tole x Jonah Christian Remix of Ready or Not by the Fugees.LINKS:Into the Depths podcastA Sample, A Cover playlistFacebookMerchEmail: spacetimemusicpodcast@gmail.comSONG CREDITS:In order of appearanceIntimate FriendsSlickEddie Kendricks1977Old Time's SakeOld Time's SakeSweet Sable1993UnbreakableUnpluggedAlicia Keys2005Good Times (Theme Song)Good TimesJames Gilstrap and Blinky Williams1974Taki JointTu Wolno PalićŚwięty, Emil Blef and Dizkret2006Fall in Love (Your Funeral)New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)Erykah Badu2010

This was a 10th grade homework assignment in Chinese class that I translated into English. I put off recording it because I didn't think my lyrics were as good as my "Pearl of the Orient" translation. Title: 龙的传人 Original Artist: Hou Dejian (Taiwan, 1978) My Translation: Far in the East did a river glide, Chang Jiang is what we know it by. Far in the East did a river thrive, Its name is the Huang He. I've never witnessed Chang Jiang's grace, Only Meeting the waters in dreams of that place. I've never listened to Huang He's might, Surging swelling in dreams of the night. There lived a dragon in the ancient east, Zhong Guo is what we call old beast. There lived a people east back when, They were known as long de chuan ren. I grew beneath that dragon's foot, Raised to be one of the dragon's brood. Dark eyes, Dark hair, yellow skin, I am forever the dragon's kin. On a tranquil evening a century ago, That was the night a great conflict arose. Recall, how the gunfire shattered that silence, And by the sword knelt dishonored compliance. For many years artillery rumbled along, Year and years cannons trembled on. Dragon Dragon open your eyes, Keep them open forever more. Dragon Dragon open your eyes, Keep them open forever more.

Well, today is the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, so I thought singing a love song from WW2 Asia would be nice. I had a hard time hitting the low notes so it sounds weird at those parts. The reason the piano sounds so good is because I transposed the physical sheet music into musescore, then hit the play button. After this, my normal Thursday release schedule returns. BTW, if you were wondering, this song is from the neo-realist film Street Angels (马路天使), which is about a singer, a burglar, a prostitute (best girl), and a newspaper reader, displaced in the slums of Shanghai during the second Sino-Japanese War. Because of how well recieved it was during the war, it was often called the Chinese Casablanca. Title: 天涯歌女 Original Artist: 周旋

This was a lullaby my dad used to sing to me as a kid in mandarin... so hope you like it? Also, pay more attention to the quality of the lyrics than that of my raspy voice and the 10+ years old electric piano's sticky keys. Thank you. Original Title: 东方之珠 Original Artist: Lo Ta-yu (Taiwan, 1991) My Translation: Xiang Jiang winds down, Towards the south. Flows to Hong Kong, Where it belongs. Oriental Pearl, My beloved one, Do you still have the grace and romance you once did? Harbor reflects, The moon's convex. The dark night burns bright, With flames of citylight. Oriental Pearl, Rests not at night, Watch your history change before your very eyes. Cold sea breeze blows, For five thousand years, Your every teardrop speak to me nonstop on your honor. Let tides follow through, As I bless you, Promise to remember your ever unchanged eastern face. Curved shaped transports, Drift through the port. The vast blue sea strip, Swirls behind the ships. Oriental Pearl, Hold me forever, Let me build warmth on your once desolate chest. Cold sea breeze blows, For five thousand years, Your every teardrop speak to me nonstop on your honor. Let tides follow through, As I bless you, Promise to remember your ever unchanged eastern face. Cold sea breeze blows, For five thousand years, Your every teardrop speak to me nonstop on your honor. dattrax: I don't know anyone w/ a tiny sliver of musical taste in their bones who doesn't like Sade. Like WOW! Beyond beautiful and what a songstress! The only singer who doesn't need a crew of back up dancers to mesmerize a crowd. She just sways and sings. Style. Her cd albums and live concert videos are WORTH EVERY PENNY. Can't wait till her 2010 album comes out! I have all her cds, house mixes and just need her live dvds (have some live VHS tapes). I first listened to 'Diamond Life' album when I was 15 w/ my first walkman (you'll have to Google that to find out that it's a portable cassette player, then you have to Google to find out what that means). This mix is a tribute to her in the only way we know how- by putting most of our favourite Sade House Bootleg tracks into a single mix. Enjoy and please comment if you have something positive to add. BTW... if you enjoy this mix, then why don't you buy us a beer? There's a PayPal DONATE button on the top right side of this website. For Toronto or Global bookings: dattrax@gmail.com This was an all vinyl house mix.
