The Presidential Villa plans to spend N14.8bn on Internet access, stationery and telephone charges, among others, under the Federal Government's planned expenditure captured in the 2023 budget. In the budget, N67.1m was budgeted for Internet access to the Villa, while stationery and computer consumables would be N79m. A further breakdown of the budget also showed that N35.9m was allocated for electricity charges, telephone charges and water rates each got N306.2m, N6m and N40.6m respectively. President Muhammadu Buhari presented to a joint session of the National Assembly a budget proposal of N20.51tn for the 2023 fiscal year. The budget is about N750bn higher than the N19.76tn earlier proposed in the 2023-2025 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper.
President Muhammadu Buhari will present the proposed N19.76 trillion budget for the 2023 fiscal year to the National Assembly. Presidential aide Femi Adesina says it was virtually one item in the Federal Executive Council meeting. The budget proposal for 2023 was presented and discussed at length. He explained that the budget proposal would be taken to the National Assembly on Friday morning by the President. Adesina, says the hybrid FEC sessions (in-person and online participants), was in line with the country's COVID-19 guidelines.
The Senate rejected the 2023-2025 medium-term expenditure framework and fiscal strategy paper which proposed A N6 trillion tax and import duties waivers proposed for in the N19.76 trillion 2023 budget which also contained A deficit of N12.4 trillion. The chairman of the senate panel, senator Solomon Adeola says that both the projected N12.43 trillion budget deficit and the n6trillion tax and import duty waivers should be critically reviewed downward before sending the proposals to the national assembly for consideration and approval. He also told the minister to look into the list of beneficiaries of the waivers for the required downward review to N3 trillion in order to give room for the reduction of the N12.43 trillion deficit figure.
The Federal Government reiterated petrol subsidy will remain in place until mid-2023. Ahead of the 2023 budget presentation, The Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed says the government is proposing to spend only N3.36 trillion on petrol subsidy in 2023. The minister added that the Federal Government is proposing an aggregate expenditure of N19.76 trillion for the 2023 financial year, with a projected deficit of N11.30 trillion. She says the Federal Government is projecting total revenue of N8.46 trillion, out of which N1.9 trillion is expected to come from oil-related sources while the remaining is to come from non-oil sources.
The Federal Government's total borrowing from the Central Bank of Nigeria through Ways and Means Advances rose from N17.46tn in December 2021 to N19.91tn in June 2022. Data from the CBN says this shows that the Federal Government borrowed N2.45tn from the apex bank within six months. The N19.91tn owed the apex bank by the Federal Government is not part of the country's total public debt stock, which stood at N41.60tn as of March 2022, according to the Debt Management Office. The CBN however says that the Federal Government's borrowing from it through the Ways and Means Advances could have adverse effects on the bank's monetary policy to the detriment of domestic prices and exchange rates.

The Kogi State Government dared the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to come out with the report of its investigations on the purported N20 billion bailout funds over which a Lagos High Court reportedly froze the state's account in August. The state in a statement insisted that the alleged sum of N19,333,333,333.36, which Sterling Bank had undertaken to the EFCC to transfer to the Central Bank of Nigeria did not belong to the Kogi State Government and that the state did not enter into any agreement, either with Sterling Bank or the EFCC, to return any bailout funds to the CBN as being portrayed. The government however kicked against the withdrawal by the EFCC, challenging the anti-graft body to make public its investigation of the alleged bailout funds.

Nigeria's Economy showed resilience in the fourth quarter of 2020, beating the expectations of several economic analysts, including projections by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund by posting a historical 9.7 percent quarter on quarter growth in its gross domestic product in 8 years to N19.55 trillion in real terms. The argument still holds but it could now be that the credit interventions of the CentralBank of Nigeria, state development banks, and other financial institutions are starting to have an impact on the economy and consequently placing Nigeria's GDP growth as the best in the world at this time, besting China at 2.6 percent; Japan at 3 percent; United Stated at 4 percent; and Columbia at 6 percent. From the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria, thethe largest economy in Africa exited from recession by the end of 2020 as its output growthreturned to positive territory in the fourth quarter of 2020, with a modest growth of 0.11percent in the quarter, compared to the -3.62 percent contraction of the previous quarter.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday in Abuja approved N29.2 billion for the construction of two roads linking two Northern states to the border of Niger Republic. The federal government has also licensed two gold refineries in Nigeria. This is coming as President Muhammadu Buhari last night in Abuja approved the composition of a monitoring committee for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in line with the provisions of Part V1, Section 21 of the NDDC Establishment Act. Briefing journalists after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in the State House, the Minister of Works, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, said the approval was the fallout of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) he presented to the council for the construction of a 46-kilometre road from Balle in Sokoto State to Niger Republic border at the cost of N9.5 billion. He said the contract would be executed within a period of 24 months. The minister also said the council approved another N19.7 billion for the construction of phase II of the project, which he described as a 50-kilometre road project from Kunia in Jigawa State to the Niger Republic border. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/newscast-africa/support Learn more about your ad choices.
