This week's Urban Valor episode features Marine Captain Kelsie Hancock.Kelsie grew up in Southern Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay, fishing and crabbing. She went to school across the street from Patuxent River Naval Air Station and would watch the jets fly over and knew she wanted to be a Marine since the 4th grade. During her enlistment, Kelsie was reunited with a former school colleague at a camping trip in Zion National Park, Marine Captain, and V-22 Osprey Pilot Nick Losapio. The two hit it off, started dating, and became engaged. Unfortunately, Captain Nick Losapio was killed during an Osprey crash in June of 2022, 58 days before he and Kelsie were set to be married. Kelsie has since reenlisted in the Marines as a reserve officer to help her get back on her feet and honor what Nicked loved to be with his comrades. This is a devastating listen, so we ask you to show your love and support for Kelsie Hancock as she courageously and openly shares her story without fear or holding back. We're honored and appreciative of Kelsie's willingness to share her story with Urban Valor and co-founder Josh Guiterrez. If you haven't yet, please LIKE THE PODCAST to show love to Kelsie and Urban Valor. Please Comment with your support and/or any questions you have for Urban Valor, and we'll answer them asap. Please Subscribe and click the "bell notification" so you NEVER miss an episode of Urban Valor. We put out weekly episodes on all major social media, have a podcast, and, coming very soon, a website where veterans can virtually share their stories. We'll transfer your story (if you choose) to the Urban Valor community! As a marine veteran who lost the love of her life, Nick Losapio, Kelsie Hancock is sharing her story to help give other veterans the confidence to share their military stories and for combat veterans to share their war stories as well. Talking to people and opening up about your feelings helps, and we at Urban Valor want nothing less than for our veterans to get the help and support they truly deserve.

Colleen Farrell, former Marine Captain, joins us to talk about her experiences on the Female Engagement Teams and her involvement in the lawsuit that led to the eventual repeal of the Combat Exclusion Policy. The grit and determination she and her Marines displayed in the face of a policy that kept them from accomplishing their mission downrange is unparalleled. She expertly outlines why the Combat Exclusion Policy impacted mission readiness and individual careers and illustrates why she felt compelled to join the lawsuit to repeal this policy. Moreover, she shows us that women offer different capabilities than men have that allows them to be an asset on the battlefield. Her testimony inspires us all to show personal courage to stand up for what feels right for an organization we care so deeply about. Two lawsuits were filed against the US Department of Defense, the ACLU lawsuit and the one Professor Coughlin worked on (NAME). The Department of Defense repealed the Ground Combat Exclusion Policy shortly after these cases were filed. The ACLU lawsuit is still on-going. Colleen is no longer involved in this case. Today's episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different is a love letter to our military and veterans. Our guest Christian Anschuetz shares his story of how he looked up to these brave heroes growing up, and how he became one of the heroes that serve our country. Christian Anschuetz retired from the U.S. military as a Marine Captain. After his service, he had a long and successful career as both an entrepreneur and an S&P 500, Senior C-level executive. After hanging up his uniform as and executive and advisor, he continues to serve as one of the leaders of the organization called Project RELO and will be spearheading an upcoming endeavor called Task Force Tribute. If you are interested in his story, and the story of thousands of active military and veterans who have served our country, stay tuned to this episode. Christian Anschuetz & the Legendary Humans of the US Military Imagine being 12 years old at home with your dad, as you watch a strange car pull up in front of your house. Two men in uniform get out, and one's a chaplain. This is an experience only Goldstar families know. This was also the moment a 12-year-old Christian Anschuetz, learned that his older brother and hero, Norman, had died serving his country. Years later, Christian finds himself joining the military himself. He did so to honor the memory of his brother, and the love of country in his heart. He eventually became a Marine Captain and went to serve for several years. We often forget that military service in our country is completely voluntary. So it takes a tough and brave soul to go through all the harsh training, and eventually deploy to dangerous and unknown territories. To sacrifice so much to serve speaks volumes to their love and loyalty to our country. After Christian retired from service, he found himself in the entrepreneurial side of things, where he utilized his expertise in advising and training business leaders and executives on how to hone their leadership skills. Project RELO Christian talks about Project RELO, a veteran non-profit that he founded. He provides a quick description of what they do, and how they help hone the nation's top CEOs and management teams to think different. “What we do is we take some of the nation's top executive leadership of fortune 500, CEOs and their management teams, and we provide leadership training to them. But what we do is we actually go on to military bases, and we conduct full military operations for three days. We do everything from convoy operations, communications, weapons handling, etc.” – Christian Anschuetz The beauty of Project RELO is that the people teaching these leadership training are transitioning military members. So it not only trains future business leaders to focus and learn leadership skills from another perspective, it also helps these transitioning military members and veterans have an idea on how they can use their previous experience to find work, or even build up new careers. Task Force Tribute Christian then talks about Task Force Tribute, which is a huge undertaking that Project RELO will be undertaking soon. One thing he pointed out was that not a lot of people know that people they mingle with on a day-to-day basics is a veteran, or is serving in some capacity in the military. Part of it is the depiction of what military does in the media. So when they eventually leave the service, there are certain preconceptions on what they could do for a career or business moving forward. As said earlier, Project RELO helps shine a light to both business leaders and military members that these military members' skills are not just confined to military-related activities. They are well-equipped with other talents and skills, plus the military discipline that has been trained to them for years. Task Force Tribute aims to tell their story in a more elaborate way. They want to tell the story of these legendary people, both active and veterans alike,

Elliot Ackerman has served five tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a U.S. Marine Corps officer and CIA officer. Over the past 10 days he and his cohorts have ‘unofficially' evacuated around 200 people from Kabul airport. “We gave these people our word, that if they worked with us, we would stand shoulder to shoulder with them.” “Any decent human being would have a hard time turning their back on these pleas for help.” Ackerman describes he and his operatives' timely evacuation of 29 Afghans yesterday. They were able to get the group into the airport just 20 minutes before the Islamic State suicide bomb went off. With the Aug 31 deadline for the U.S. to be withdrawn from Afghanistan looming, Ackerman gives his battle-honed perspective on the best course to take, both diplomatically and on the ground, going forward. #ElliotAckerman #Afghanistan #Kabul

Legal matters. This show features three men of the law speaking about that subject. Without the law, what would we have? Disunity. Uncivilization. America is based on the rule of law which means we follow the statutes set forth by our legislators. And the framers of our Constitution. Colorado State Rep. Dylan Roberts is my first guest this week in Craig's Lawyers' Lounge. His House District 26 (Eagle and Routt Counties) lies within the new US. Rep Lauren Boebert's Third Congressional District in Colorado. Boebert should be replaced. Find out why Rep. Roberts is the person to do it. Roberts is also a Colorado Deputy DA, sort of a double lawman. Our Troubadour Dave Gunders delights with his song Black Balloons which made him think of America's rejection of selfish Donald Trump. This week's show is dominated by talk of the upcoming trial of Donald Trump in the US Senate. Should the case go forward? How should prosecutors present their case? What defenses are available to Trump? Siddhartha Rathod is a renaissance man in Colorado law. This U.S. Marine Captain has a terrific law firm with lots of big cases he addresses. Listen to a fascinating discussion of the pride this Asian Indian – American takes in Kamala Harris as these two lawmen discuss intermarriage, ethnic pride, and what Trumpism has done to our country. We are approaching a time where you must make a stand. If you try hard, you will make someone mad. That's actually the best way to know you are making a difference. Examine yourself, remove the log from your eye, and then speak boldly. The times demand it. Today, I remember a Marine Captain who implored me to never forget, "when you have the mic, say what needs said."
Hear from the CEO Paul Clarke on what makes Fire Grounds Coffee more that a coffee company and why they have teamed up with a non profit foundation called Next Rung. Paul tells his personal story about struggles with mental health and why coffee plays an important role in dealing with it. As an added bonus Paul gives us a little education about the different types of roasted coffee beans and why they taste they way they do. Paul's idea came at 2 o'clock in the morning with sirens roaring and lights flashing as they arrived at a call riding the ambulance. It was the thirteenth call of the night, there was no sleep in sight, and only mediocre coffee waiting for them back at the station. They poised themselves for action and then someone interjected, “Someone should start a coffee company for first responders." His colleague quickly agreed, they unloaded and went on to their patient, and that was the end of the discussion. The idea followed founder, Paul Clarke, to Iraq where he deployed in 2018 for 9 months. While serving overseas, he met fellow minded service members who wanted to help make his idea a reality. Brainstorming the business soon became one of their favorite pastimes. Over a year later, Fire Grounds Coffee Co. was officially established. Through the help of his best friend, dad, a fellow Marine Captain, and two Air Force Captains, he was able to gain the funding he needed to provide delicious, fresh coffee to first responders and friends. Paul is a husband, father, Dallas Firefighter and Paramedic, an Officer in the Marine Corps Reserves, and an Iraq Veteran. When he isn’t roasting coffee, working at the fire station or at drill, he can be found working out, playing fetch with his dog, hanging out with his son in the sandbox or smoking his own barbeque. He loves being outside with his family and traveling with his wife. Paul started Fire Grounds Coffee Co. because he wanted first responders to enjoy quality coffee and give back to a group of men and women he is proud to represent. The dream is becoming a reality and he is ready to deliver a product to everyone that represents his passion and commitment. Introduction We have all heard the useful saying, “Walk a mile in their shoes.” How many people who are for more--even severe--gun laws have walked a mile in a gun owners’ shoes? And vice versa; how many NRA members have walked a mile in a “gun-grabbers” shoes? I have done both, and I’d like you to walk those two miles with me. That is the subject of today’s 10-minute episode. Continuing In the military, I saw guns as tools. Decades later when I went to a friend’s home and saw a large glass-front, long gun case in his living room, I was taken aback. I did not know if he was some sort of nut case; hey, he and his wife had two young boys living with them. Later, a good friend of mine, a former Marine Captain, encouraged me to join the NRA. I had the same nervous, “Who is this guy?”, feeling. I was not completely anti-gun, but living in Silicon Valley, I was not in gun-friendly territorty. Even then (After 30 years, I left to return to Colorado in 2008,), the overall attitude there was, at best, guns, yuch; at worst, guns are evil. When I was 13 or so, I went out with some of my Dad’s friends to do some skeet shooting. You shot clay pigeons with shotguns as practice for duck hunting. Some do it just for the fun of it. After all, skeet shooting is one of the gun-centric Olympic sports. I thought it was fun, and was certainly different from anything I had done before. My next experience with guns was in the Army. Guns were tools; no one was pro-gun, or anti-gun; we just learned to use them and take care of them. And for a valuable skill, how many people do you know who can take a rifle apart and put it back together again--blindfolded? Useful, perhaps, if your gun jams in the dark in a combat zone--but pretty useless anywhere else. But it did build discipline and confidence. As did the live fire training. My next encounter with firearms was in the mid 60s, when a friend of mine needed to sell a Colt Trooper, a .357 Magnum revolver, along with a ton of accessories, cheaply. I did not need a gun, and certainly not one this powerful, but it was a good deal, and I was happy to help a friend. It was good 30 years before I ever touched it. But I kept it. When my friend, the former Marine Captain, invited me to go to a local range with my two eldest sons, then about 13 and 15, I thought I would take my revolver along. I knew that it needed to be cleaned, at the very least. But how to do that? I had never been into a gun store, and was not quite sure what to expect. Was I going to be met with a bunch of gun nuts with rifles slung in front of them--at the ready? The very nice folks at Imbert and Smithers gun store in San Mateo, CA, took a fair amount of time to resurrect the firearm, gave me some tips, and charged me for nothing but the ammunition I bought. The four of us, my two sons, me and the Captain, had a fun and very, very safe time. Including blowing up some soda cans with a .357 magnum. Some time after that, my wife and I were visiting friends, a young couple with kids in preschool, who ran a ranch in far Northern California. In their living room, they had a glass-front gun case with several long guns clearly visible. That made me nervous, and I wondered if they were some type of around the bend gun lovers. It did not get any better when he started talking about going deer hunting locally, then cutting the animal up and sharing it with his family. I was wondering if he was some sort of Neanderthal, and he was talking about being grateful for the fresh meat. My thinking about guns changed radically when I moved to Colorado Springs. I made lots of new friends, many of whom hunt birds, deer, elk and bear. It was quite natural to them. And their guns were just tools. It was then that I made a connection between their hunting and mine. I have never hunted on land, but I have done a fair amount of spearfishing, both on SCUBA and breath hold. I prefer a pole spear,

(1) ERWIN CHEMERINSKY and I talk about legal issues raised by Trump administration. How far is this Supreme Court going to go in weakening separation between church and state? Is Trump violating the law by making money - including taxpayer's money - from his businesses? Who's going to enforce that law? How bad is it that he belittles and scapegoats the judiciary? Is it too early to think about impeachment? We've only got a half hour, but we cover a lot. (recorded July 26, 2017) (2) In fall 2009, MATTHEW HOH, Marine Iraq war vet, resigned from the Foreign Service in Afghanistan because he couldn't participate in the occupation. American families, Hoh said in his letter of resignation, "must be reassured their dead have sacrificed for a purpose worthy of futures lost, love vanished, and promised dreams unkept. I have lost confidence such assurances can be made any more."

Two related stories dominate today's broadcast. The first derives from a fine movie entitled "Hanah Arendt," a philosopher who covered the Adolf Eichman trial in Israel and a New York Times article (3/2/2015) entitled "How We Learned to KIll" by Timothy Kudo, a Marine Captain and Graduate Student. Arendt coined the term "the banality of evil" and Kudo intones "In the madness of war I saw that taking a life could be banal." Today's story will continue to develop ideas begun earlier in this series and past broadcasts that help explain why killing seems so easy for our species in such massive and routine ways. I will utilize evolutionary and psychoanalytic theories as my guide.

Aired 11/15/09 A former Marine captain with combat experience in Iraq, Matthew Hoh, also served in uniform at the Pentagon, and as a civilian in Iraq and at the State Department. This summer he was the senior US civilian in Zabul province, a Taliban hotbed. In September Hoh became the first US official known to resign in protest over the Afghan war. His four page letter of resignation explains that he became convinced that our war in that country will not only inevitably fail, but is fueling the very insurgency we are trying to defeat. He points out that "next fall, the United States' occupation will equal in length the Soviet Union's own physical involvement in Afghanistan." "I have doubts and reservations about our current strategy and planned future strategy, but my resignation is based not upon how we are pursuing this war, but why and to what end." The Pentagon’s own 2004 report concluded: "Negative attitudes and the conditions that create them are the underlying sources of threats to America's national security . . . Direct American intervention in the Muslim world has paradoxically elevated the stature of and support for Islamic radicals." "American families," Hoh said at the end of his letter of resignaton, "must be reassured their dead have sacrificed for a purpose worthy of futures lost, love vanished, and promised dreams unkept. I have lost confidence such assurances can be made any more." http://www.stopafghanistan.org/
