Selling To Corporate
The most important skill professional salespeople have (and how you can use it!)

Selling To Corporate

What This Episode Is About You've invested in a sales strategy. You've done the training. So why aren't you getting the results you expected? In this episode of the Selling to Corporate® podcast, Jess Lorimer reveals the single most important skill that professional salespeople use to create consistent, replicable results - and it's almost certainly not what you'd expect. Jess makes the case that the gap between coaches, consultants and professional salespeople isn't intelligence, experience or even strategy. It's one surprisingly simple skill that most business owners overlook, underestimate or quietly choose to ignore. This episode explains exactly what it is, why it matters more than any tactic or technique and what happens to your sales process when you don't use it. Who This Episode Is For Coaches, consultants, trainers, speakers, and done-for-you service providers selling to corporate clients Anyone who has invested in a sales strategy or programme and felt it 'didn't work' Business owners who find themselves constantly tweaking, adjusting, or second-guessing their sales process Those who are great at selling one offer or to one type of client, but struggle to replicate that success elsewhere Anyone who suspects their sales process isn't producing consistent results but isn't sure why Questions This Episode Answers What is the most important skill in B2B sales? Why does a sales strategy that worked stop working over time? How do professional salespeople create replicable results across different industries and offers? What's the difference between buying a sales strategy and actually executing one? Why does tweaking a sales process - even slightly - make results impossible to measure or replicate? Key Takeaways  1. The Most Important Sales Skill Is Following Instructions The single most important skill professional salespeople possess is the ability to follow instructions precisely and consistently. Not prospecting. Not objection handling. Not closing. Following instructions. Jess is direct: in her experience working with thousands of professional salespeople and thousands of coaches, consultants, speakers, trainers, and done-for-you service providers, the difference in results almost always comes down to this. Professional salespeople follow a proven process exactly as written. Most coaches and consultants - however intelligent and however well-intentioned - don't. This isn't a criticism of intelligence. In fact, Jess argues that high intelligence can be a liability here. Smart people are more likely to spot what feels 'wrong' about a set of instructions, more likely to rationalise a small adjustment and more likely to believe their version of the process is 'good enough'. It usually isn't. 2. Any Proven Strategy Has the Ability to Work - If It's Executed Properly Jess teaches seven different methods of B2B lead generation. She has clients who generate all of their corporate revenue from cold email outreach. She has clients who generate all of their revenue from networking alone - a method she personally dislikes. The method is not the determining factor. Execution is. The two reasons a sales strategy fails are almost always the same: The strategy being used is not proven. It was built in an AI tool, borrowed from a B2C context or sold by someone without hands-on B2B sales experience. The strategy is proven but it is not being followed correctly. Steps are skipped, wording is changed, volume is reduced or the process is quietly adjusted whenever something feels uncomfortable. If your sales process is not producing results, the first question to ask is not 'what strategy should I try next?' It is 'am I executing my current proven strategy exactly as intended?'   3. Small Changes to a Sales Process Create Big Problems One of the most common patterns Jess sees with experienced clients is a gradual drift away from the original process. It rarely starts as a conscious decision to change strategy. More often it starts with a lost deal, a knock to confidence, and a small adjustment made under pressure to 'save' the next opportunity. That one small change leads to another. The language shifts. The attachment changes. The objection handling softens. The reassurance given increases. None of it feels significant in the moment. But cumulatively, the process becomes unrecognisable - and critically, it becomes impossible to measure, troubleshoot or improve. Standardisation is not a constraint on creativity. It is what makes it possible to know whether your sales process is working, identify where it is breaking down, and fix the right thing. When every part of the process is slightly different, there is nothing consistent to evaluate. 4. Sales Should Be Boring - Creativity Comes in the Conversation Jess uses the analogy of Picasso: before he painted eyes on the sides of heads, he spent years learning the rules of perspective, line and composition. The creative leaps came after the foundations were mastered, not instead of them. The same principle applies to B2B sales. Your lead generation process, your outreach approach, your proposal structure, your pricing framework - these should be repeatable, measurable and consistent. They should feel a little boring, because boring is what makes them scalable. The creativity, the consultative problem-solving, the bespoke solution-building - all of that happens in the sales conversation itself, and in the delivery of the work. That's where you get to be brilliant and distinctive. Your process is what gets you to that conversation in the first place. 5. Following Instructions Builds the Confidence That Creativity Cannot When a sales process is followed precisely, it produces predictable metrics. Those metrics tell you what is working and what is not - early enough to make useful adjustments rather than emergency ones. That predictability is what gives professional salespeople confidence, even in difficult markets. When a process is modified and the results decline, the person executing it has no way of knowing which change caused the problem. That uncertainty erodes confidence and often leads to further changes, making the situation worse. Following instructions is therefore not just a technical requirement - it is the foundation of sustained confidence in your own sales ability. 6. Replicatable Success Requires Transferable Process, Not Transferable Luck Jess draws on her own sales career across jewellery, recruitment, tech, and sales training - including becoming the top diamond salesperson in her region at 16, and a top performer within her first year at a company operating across 30 countries - to make a specific point: success that can be replicated across industries, offers, and client types is built on process, not personality. If you are excellent at selling one particular offer but cannot replicate that success with other offers or other types of decision maker, it is a signal that your results are not yet built on a transferable process. They are built on familiarity, repetition or relationship - which are not scalable. A proven, correctly executed process is what creates results that transfer. Key Quotes "The most important skill professional salespeople have in their arsenal is following instructions." "Literally any proven strategy has the ability to work if it's being done properly. The problem is that most people aren't using proven strategies - or they're not following the instructions for the ones they have." "Your sales process shouldn't be where you feel creatively satiated. It should be where you are able to replicate a clear process and be given consistent metrics so you know what is working and what isn't."

We like to think we choose what matters. But what if the goals we're chasing… aren't actually ours?Episode Summary My guest on this episode is Dr. C. Thi Nguyen, philosopher and author of The Score: How to Stop Playing Somebody Else's Game, a book about how metrics, scoring systems, and “games” shape our behaviour—often without us realising it. Thi explains how his work on games led him to a deeper question: why do scoring systems make games feel meaningful, but make real life feel distorted? The answer lies in how metrics redefine success—quietly shifting us from what we care about to what we can measure. In a wide-ranging discussion, we explore the idea of “value capture”, why institutions rely on simplified proxies, and how the very features that make metrics useful also make them dangerous. We also discuss expertise, transparency, gamification, and why removing metrics altogether doesn't solve the problem. This is a conversation about control: who sets the rules, who keeps score, and what happens when we stop questioning the game we're playing. Guest BioDr. C. Thi Nguyen is a philosopher whose work explores how games, metrics, and social systems shape human behaviour and values. A professor of philosophy at the University of Utah, his research sits at the intersection of ethics, decision-making, and the philosophy of agency, with a particular focus on how the structures around us influence what we care about and how we act.Alongside his academic work, Thi is also a keen gamer, rock climber, and cook; interests that inform his thinking about play, challenge, and the richness of human experience beyond what can be easily measured.AI-Generated Timestamped Summary 00:00 – Introduction: games, metrics, and meaning03:00 – How Thi came to study games and philosophy07:00 – What games are (and why they matter)10:00 – Achievement vs striving play13:00 – Cheating and misunderstanding the point of games16:00 – Games, struggle, and meaningful activity18:00 – Cooking, recipes, and rules22:00 – Metrics as simplified rule systems25:00 – Value capture and how metrics reshape goals29:00 – Why institutions rely on measurement32:00 – Quantification and loss of context36:00 – Rules, algorithms, and expertise40:00 – Standardisation and the cost of consistency43:00 – Transparency, trust, and unintended consequences47:00 – Metrics and the loss of expert judgment50:00 – Ungrading and the limits of removing metrics54:00 – Designing better scoring systems58:00 – Gamification and why it misses the point01:02:00 – Choosing your own game01:06:00 – Final reflections and closingRelevant LinksThi's personal website – https://objectionable.net/His faculty page - https://profiles.faculty.utah.edu/u6021584The Score: How to Stop Playing Someone Else's Game - https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/457380/the-score-by-nguyen-c-thi/9780241653975Thi on Bluesky – https://bsky.app/profile/add-hawk.bsky.social

Last Wednesday, the British Isles did something remarkable. Wind turbines across the United Kingdom generated twenty-three thousand eight hundred and eighty megawatts of electricity — an all-time national record. That is enough to power twenty-three million homes at the same moment. And while wind was hitting its record high, natural gas fell to just two-point-three percent of total British supply. A two-year low for gas. In a single day. Britain is not stopping there. The Crown Estate has announced a new offshore wind leasing round, targeting six gigawatts of new capacity off the northeast coast of England — enough to power six million more homes. And now the United Kingdom is building the physical infrastructure to match that ambition. Ministers have committed up to sixty-four million pounds in support for Port Talbot in South Wales. The plan: the UK’s first dedicated assembly port for floating offshore wind. Associated British Ports says total investment could exceed five hundred million pounds once fully built out. The goal is the Celtic Sea, where developers are targeting four gigawatts of floating wind. Four gigawatts. Floating. In open ocean. Floating offshore wind is the industry’s next frontier. But it is also the industry’s most expensive and complicated technology. Consider what happened quietly this last week off the coast of Caithness, Scotland. Ørsted, the world’s largest offshore wind developer, and BlueFloat Energy have both walked away from the Stromar floating wind project. Stromar is a one-point-five gigawatt floating wind farm — sixty to one hundred meters of water depth, fifty kilometers offshore, enough power for one-point-five million homes. Construction was not expected to begin until twenty twenty-eight. Now Nadara, the project’s remaining partner, holds one hundred percent of Stromar alone. For Ørsted, the exit signals tighter capital discipline. For floating wind, it signals just how difficult the economics remain. And yet, across the North Sea, a solution is taking shape. The University of Strathclyde and Japan Marine United signed a Memorandum of Understanding last week. Their mission: standardise and mass-produce floating offshore wind turbines. Japan Marine United has been developing floating wind technology since 1999. Their Jade Wind floater is headed for large-scale government-led deployment in Japan. Standardisation — the same answer that made fixed-bottom offshore wind competitive. So here is where we are. Britain just broke its wind generation record. The Crown Estate is opening new ocean for development. Port Talbot is becoming a floating wind assembly hub. And Strathclyde and Japan Marine United are building the engineering knowledge to make it all affordable. Two companies stepped back from Stromar. But the Celtic Sea is still waiting. And that’s the state of the wind industry on the 30th of March 2026. Join us tomorrow for the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast.

Can mourning become a pathway to the divine? Has the modern world sanitised death, and does Muharram insist we don't look away?Drawing from his forthcoming book Senses of Mourning, Dr Babak Rahimi of UC San Diego asks a question many have wondered, but few have explored: why do Shi'as keep mourning? This episode reveals mourning not as passive grief but as active devotion, a technique for connecting to God through the body, the senses, and collective memory. We explore how modernity's devotion to pleasure has pushed death to the margins, how Muharram insists we confront what modern life conceals, and why the senses are not obstacles to the sacred but pathways toward it. From the festive dimensions of grief to the standardisation of ritual by state and digital platforms, this conversation moves through the space where philosophy meets performance, and where the body becomes a site of hope.Dr Babak Rahimi is an Associate Professor of Communication, Culture and Religion at UC San Diego, where he directs the Program for the Study of Religion and the Middle East Studies Program. In HR we have always tended to prefer standardisation. The instinct to make everything and to treat everyone in the same way comes from a mixture of practicality, compliance, and tradition. Standardisation makes processes easier to administer at scale, creates the appearance of fairness, and reduces the risks of inconsistency. For HR teams under pressure to manage large workforces efficiently, there is comfort in producing a set of policies or frameworks that apply equally to all. However in recent years there has been an increasing demand for the personalisation of HR, to counteract the limitations of having standard, universally applied processes. In this episode Lucy is joined by her co-founder of Disruptive HR, Karen Moran to consider when HR should be customised or personalised – and when it should be a standard, consistent approach for all.  They look at when it makes sense to have standardisation and the risks are of being too rigid in your uniformity. They give three practical examples of customisation in action, how AI helps to personalise and they also discuss how to personalise without adding complexity, by using “employee personas” to design around real people. As a competitor moves up the ranks, the experience they get from different competitions can vary drastically. At some competitions, the standard of the division matches really well with prior expectations and the qualification process. Whereas in a different competition, divisions are named the same as others, but it's a notch or two up or down when comparing. This difference can be very frustrating as an athlete and coach. It means that some competitions don't provide useful information to help with training and improving. It's going to be impossible to make everyone happy–for some it will be too hard and for others it will be too easy. But having some consistency across competitions will make for a much more streamlined process in both competing and training for athletes. In this week's episode, we explore potential ways of having some level of guidance or standardization, as well as discuss the realities for athletes competing at different divisions and progressing throughout their training and competing. Erica Stanford told Mike Hosking currently, it's up to principals to go out to their community and specify what's taught. In the past couple of months, a new type of fitness competition has been generating a lot of anticipation. Headed by multiple-time CrossFit Games athlete Will Moorad, the World Fitness Project is entering the competitive landscape in a year when the CrossFit Games is undergoing its biggest changes yet. The competition consists of two tour events and a finals event at the end of 2025. There are 20 professionally signed male and female athletes, along with 10 challengers at each event. Additionally, team and masters competitions will take place at these events. Overall, this competition appears to create a clear pathway for athletes to compete in the sport and make a living as professional fitness athletes. They have released a movement list for the season, already demonstrating standardisation we haven't seen in CrossFit. The WFP has signed many of the sport's top athletes, with several planning to compete in both the CrossFit Games and the WFP season. With three decades of experience in sustainability and climate change—including roles at the EPA and in startups—Jim offers deep insights into the evolving corporate approach to climate action. We delve into the key takeaways from this year's Climate Week in New York. Jim highlights how the event has grown beyond climate discussions to encompass material transitions like the circular economy and hard-to-abate sectors such as aluminium and steel. He shares encouraging progress, noting that members of the CEO Climate Action Alliance have achieved a 10% absolute reduction in emissions over three years, even as their businesses have grown.A central theme of our conversation is the pivotal role of data and technology in accelerating sustainability initiatives. Jim explains that much of the necessary data for sustainability reporting already exists within companies but isn't effectively utilised. We explore how AI can act as a valuable colleague, handling tedious tasks like emissions factor mapping and freeing up human resources for strategic decision-making.We also discuss the importance of standardising data exchange to ensure consistent and comparable sustainability reporting. Jim emphasises that agreeing on standards is crucial for making meaningful progress and avoiding the pitfalls of fragmented efforts. Finally, we touch on the evolving role of the Chief Sustainability Officer and how sustainability is increasingly integrated into financial and operational planning. Jim offers advice to business leaders hesitant about committing to sustainability initiatives, stressing that while the best time to invest was a decade ago, the second-best time is now.I hope you'll find this episode insightful as we explore how technology, data, and collaborative efforts can drive meaningful progress in the fight against climate change.Check out SAP's Sustainability page for more.Support the showPodcast supportersI'd like to sincerely thank this podcast's amazing supporters: Lorcan Sheehan Jerry Sweeney Andreas Werner Stephen Carroll Roger Arnold And remember you too can Support the Podcast - it is really easy and hugely important as it will enable me to continue to create more excellent Climate Confident episodes like this one.ContactIf you have any comments/suggestions or questions for the podcast - get in touch via direct message on Twitter/LinkedIn.
