After two years of waiting, the Pose Method episode is finally here! You've asked what we think of it, here are our answers. Pose Method® is a proprietary method for coaching running technique developed by Dr. Nichloas Romanov in 1977 in the former Soviet Union. Pose clinics have been taught around the Army since 2009 and the newest version of FM 7-22 put Pose into official Army doctrine. In this episode we break down a few key questions: What is the Pose Method? Does the Pose Method work? How did the Pose Method end up in Army doctrine? We are joined in this conversation by Dr. Nick Barringer, who co-authored Gravitational Running and the Tactical Athlete, which analyzed the evidence for Pose Method, among other similar techniques. You can find Pose Method's content on their website and their military-specific website. They also have a YouTube channel called Pose TV that includes a military section featuring numerous endorsements from Army leaders. Some of the research mentioned in the episode: Effect of a global alteration of running technique on kinematics and economy (co-authored by Dr. Romanov, who led the training intervention) A Review of Mechanics and Injury Trends Among Various Running Styles (authored by Army researchers) Thinking about your running movement makes you less efficient: attentional focus effects on running economy and kinematics Smoothness: an Unexplored Window into Coordinated Running Proficiency (we didn't actually talk about this one, but even though he can't describe the findings, Drew is annoying about it so it's in the show notes)

A few weeks ago we got the news that Congress was considering directing the military to investigate the potential for adding creatine to MREs. This spurred a lot of discussion on creatine's effectiveness and dosing strategies, and to really get to the bottom of that we needed an expert. Our guest this week is so much of an expert that he is often referred to as "Dr. Creatine." Scott Forbes is an associate professor in the Department of Physical Education Studies at Brandon University in Manitoba, Canada, and an adjunct professor in the faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina in Canada. Dr. Forbes is a certified sports nutritionist through the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) and a clinical exercise physiologist and high-performance specialist through the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP). Dr. Forbes has published over 110 peer-reviewed manuscripts and five book chapters. His research examines various nutritional (e.g., creatine and protein) and exercise interventions to enhance muscle, bone, and brain function in multiple populations, including athletes and aging adults. The authors identified several risk factors for failure, including age younger than 17 or older than 35, elite level of competition, greater time from injury to surgery and active tobacco use.We finish up today with a discussion of ACL rehabilitation in the military population. The last article we reference is titled “The Warrior Athlete Part 2 – Return to Duty in the US Military: Advancing ACL Rehabilitation in the Tactical Athlete.” Matt Provencher and colleagues report that ACL injuries in the warfighter population is a complex decision-making matrix that begins with proper pre-habilitation, discussion of graft choice and surgical technique, and lastly the coordination of a well-defined and patient specific post-op rehab plan complete with a multifaceted return to duty assessment.

6ers, we all know that physical fitness is a crucial component of the military culture. But to unlock our highest potential, we need to incorporate a broader range of metrics that will help us better understand how exercise affects overall health and well-being, leading to more personalized and effective training programs. Alex Morrow is a U.S. Army veteran and the founder of MOPs and MOEs brand and podcast. He is passionate about the Army's physical fitness and believes soldiers can perform better if the Measurements Of Effectiveness (MOEs) of their training tasks are taken into consideration. Alex graduated from West Point in 2013 with a degree in International Relations and Affairs. He served as an intelligence officer and later a fitness instructor in the US Army until 2021. You will learn about the difference between measures of performance (MOPs) and measures of effectiveness (MOEs) and how they play a role in achieving a desired outcome. Alex shares how important it is to seek out things you're not good at by being comfortable outside of your comfort zone so you can learn and grow exponentially. As a result, you'll realize that more learning happens when you're wrong than when you're right, which is why it's so important to have people in your circle that hold you accountable because it allows you to work on your weaknesses from a place of inspiration. ----- 01:21 - How Alex found his passion 02:47 - Gradual process of getting into the fitness and how he handled identity shift 05:19 - Working on your weakness from a place of inspiration 07:12 - Not all of your ideas will resonate with the audience 08:47 - How Alex combats impostor syndrome 10:28 - Convincing the leadership and framing up conversations in a productive way 11:49 - Rethinking the way we think about physical training and holistic health 14:05 - Measures of performance (MOPs) and measures of effectiveness (MOEs) 18:37 - The process of learning and the danger of getting to the peak of ‘Mount Stupid' 20:19 - Having people that tell you, “you are being dumb,” is really important 21:38 - The fumbling phase of when you launch a project is a learning phase ----- Here is how to connect with Alex Morrow: Instagram LinkedIn Website MOPs and MOEs podcast ----- Connect with Got Your Six podcast: Website Instagram LinkedIn Twitter TikTok ----- Connect with Tony: Website LinkedIn Instagram Twitter

Welcome back to Iron Sights After Dark. We've heard from performance coach & trainer Jeff Chenault before but in this episode, I brought him in for his first After Dark appearance to discuss performance training for the tactical athlete. Chenault discusses his background and how his search to alleviate pain sent him on a path to study the human body, root causes of pain & a deep understanding on how the body works. Jeff discussed fascia, holistic systems of the body & relates his knowledge to performance training for the functional tactical athlete who wants to achieve maximal performance. For a long time pushing the limits was the primary training strategy for active service members - research & performance training is creating a different breed of tactical athletes. Over the years, I've helped countless first responders increase their performance on the job. In this episode, both Jeff and I combine our experience as experts in human performance to share our best theories for how the tactical athlete can use proven concepts in the field of health & performance to increase their athletic performance and longevity both on and off the job.Watch Jeff's Videos on The RDF YouTube ChannelTopics Discussed:Jeff's BackgroundPain & AddictionELDOA & Tissue QualityFascia & TendonsEquipment & ResourcesJoint Stability & The PelvisEgo & LiftingPassive vs. Active Range of MotionShooting ImplementationMore Iron Sights Interviews:Triple Feed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMTc7AE0KaQ&t=384sKayley Gunner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfGqHxCv7Vc&t=522sMike Salemi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq-Nj6M0EBI&t=335sAdam Schafer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiyrdWdO1y8&t=8sSal Di Stefano: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBdKdSjQ0BM&t=4425sJason Khalipa: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTiq-sID-EMByron Rodgers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrtEyuVNNpwDonnie Oliver: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKY1_TLKHlIChris Cheng: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr0zSGSTzKM&t=2sTraver Boehm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_NLdIg3zBc&t=1394sTRAIN WITH US:RDF Online Training: https://www.reddotfitness.net/online-coachingCONNECT WITH US:Website - https://ironsightspodcast.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/ironsightspodcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/irons
