On the 22nd January 1879 in South Africa, the British suffered the greatest defeat ever inflicted upon them by a native African army - when a force of 1,500 was annihilated by the Zulus during the Anglo-Zulu war.Get in touch and get my weekly newsletter:Click hereChelmsford was quick to lay the blame for the defeat at Isandlwana on anyone but himself.Equally it could not be the fault of the redecorated infantry. So rather than Pullene being held to account for spreading his troops out too thinly 3 myths were planted as to who was to blame.NNC collapsed at crucial momentDurnford didn't take commandCommisariat delayed ammo supply but quibbling and screwdrivers. Not only do these myths obscure Chelmsford culpability in dividing his force and Pulleine's decision to spread his line too thinly and not create any entrenched positions. It ignores something more important. That they British had been out manoeuvred and out fought by an enemy with spears and shields. The Zulus had successfully fooled Chelmsford into dividing their force. They had moved 25,000 undetected to the north. They then delivered a horns of the buffalo attack over a 4 mile front and despite one of the horns going behind the mountain they had timed the devastating attack perfectly. Finally, despite the withering fire laid down by the experienced British redcoats, the Zulu warriors had held their nerve and pressed home their attack, inspired by the Chief Biyela.Support the Show.

Redbull is a well known improv player in the current THPS community: and is still considered one of the best improvers during the THAW era. He started playing THPS on PS2 first playing THUG2 and then started his online career with the release of THAW in 2005. First doing high scoring, tag whoring and sometimes glitch finding. It wasn't until he saw improv videos and watched experienced players online from clans like OaS and tS that really got him into improv and taking the game more seriously. His style, which he defines as the combination between Drizzt's movement and Jens's speed, has gotten him invitations into some of the best clans in the THPS Community: DOC, nnC, OaS, nG and now the mythic tLT. He is also co-founder of Inc. with a desire to contribute to the Hispanic THPS community, created in 2010 an interactive website that would help over 100 players improve their game-play with tech tutorials, basic improv and whore tips all explained in Spanish. Even though he states that he lacks knowledge in video editing, he loves making videos and has released several across his career. In 2016, he started playing THUGPRO after the decay of the THAW online community, and has been an active participant ever since.

Frederik Heffermehl is an international lawyer, peace activist and author of “The Nobel Peace Prize: What Nobel Really Wanted” (2010 Praeger). Former Vice President of the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms (IALANA), Heffermehl joins us as we continue to reflect on the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which entered into force on 1/22/2021. We also discuss Heffermehl's work on the Nobel Peace Prize including his website nobelwill.org. The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017. Heffermehl reflects on this award and, more generally, discusses Nobel's intent in his will of 1895– by which 5 different “Nobel Prizes” were established (Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Peace). Respecting Nobel's intent is a legal duty incumbent upon the Norwegian Nobel Committee (NNC). However, Heffermehl argues that with regard to the “Prize for the Champions of Peace” as Nobel called it, The NNC has shirked this duty, in part by ignoring the connection between Nobel and Bertha von Suttner, who inspired him to create the prize.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.07.21.214296v1?rss=1 Authors: Perissinotti, P., Martinez-Hernandez, E., Piedras-Renteria, E. S. Abstract: Leptin regulates hypothalamic POMC+ (pro-opiomelanocortin) neurons by inducing TRPC (Transient Receptor Potential Cation) channel-mediate membrane depolarization. Here we assessed the role of T-type channels on POMC neuron excitability and leptin-induced depolarization in vitro. We demonstrate T-type currents are indispensable for both processes, as treatment with NNC-55-0396 prevented the membrane depolarization and rheobase changes induced by leptin in cultured mouse POMC neurons. Furthermore, we demonstrate TRPC1/C5 channels and CaV3.1 and CaV3.2 channels co-exist in complex. The functional relevance of this complex was corroborated using intracellular Ca2+ chelators; intracellular BAPTA (but not EGTA) application was sufficient to preclude POMC neuron excitability by preventing leptin-induced calcium influx through TRPC channels and T-type channel function. We conclude T-type channels are integral in POMC neuron excitability. Leptin activation of TRPC channels existing in a macromolecular complex with T-type channels recruits the latter by locally-induced membrane depolarization, further depolarizing POMC neurons, triggering action potentials and excitability. Background: The measurement of biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) has gained increasing acceptance in establishing the diagnosis of some neurodegenerative diseases. Heart-type fatty acid-binding protein (H-FABP) was recently discovered in CSF and serum of patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Objective: We investigated H-FABP in CSF and serum alone and in combination with CSF tau protein to evaluate these as potential biomarkers for the differentiation between dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods: We established H-FABP and tau protein values in a set of 144 persons with DLB (n = 33), Parkinson disease with dementia (PDD; n = 25), AD (n = 35) and nonclemented neurological controls (NNC; n = 51). Additionally, serum H-FABP levels were analyzed in idiopathic Parkinson disease patients without evidence of cognitive decline (n = 45) using commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. We calculated absolute values of HFABP and tau protein in CSF and serum and established relative ratios between the two to obtain the best possible match for the clinical working diagnosis. Results: Serum HFABP levels were elevated in DLB and PDD patients compared with NNC and AD subjects. To better discriminate between DLB and AD, we calculated the ratio of serum H-FABP to CSF tau protein levels. At the arbitrary chosen cutoff ratio >= 8 this quotient reached a sensitivity of 91% and a specificity of 66%. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the measurement of CSF tau protein, together with H-FABP quantification in serum and CSF, and the ratio of serum H-FABP to CSF tau protein represent marker candidates for the differentiation between AD and DLB.
