We first saw Graham Fellows as Jilted John on Top of the Pops in 1978 and we've followed his characters ever since, especially drawn to the keyboard-prodding, car-coated John Shuttleworth and his deathless pop anthems ‘Pigeons In Flight', ‘Up And Down Like A Bride's Nightie' and ‘I Can't Go Back To Savoury Now'. Graham talks here about how and why he created them (and rock media studies lecturer Brian Appleton) and his new book ‘John Shuttleworth Takes The Biscuit', along with … the allure of romantic punk rock (Patrik Fitzgerald, Buzzcocks, the Undertones), Sheffield mouse-breeders, comic melancholy, whether Northern humour is funnier than Southern, kissing Debbie Harry for a publicity shot, the advice his father gave him and the finer details of the Shuttleworth live experience. Bridgeport's walking and hiking trails offer scenic views and convenient access across the city. The city's trail systems are widely used by locals, according to Joe Shuttleworth, director of Bridgeport Parks and Recreation. Shuttleworth highlighted the appeal of the trails at Deegan and Hinkle Lakes Park, noting their scenic beauty and shaded paths, which provide comfort during the summer months. The campus of The Bridge Sports Complex also features a fully off-road trail. Development plans include additional trails once two new fields at the complex are completed. Plans are underway to enhance the city's trail systems, Shuttleworth added. Facing shortages during the war, Congress passed an act to aid the construction of three new gunpowder plants. Looking for places that had a favorable climate, raw materials, easy access to transportation and was safe from coastal attacks, engineers with the DuPont Company selected the area that would become Nitro. Hercules Powder initiated the groundbreaking for the Nitro chemical plant, called Explosives Plant C, at the site of present day Nitro City Park on December 23, 1917. The facility itself would be capable of producing around 700,000 pounds of gunpowder. Around 110,000 people were on the payroll during the plant's eleven month construction period. Those working on the project included future movie star Clark Gable and future baseball star Pie Traynor. In this conversation, Zak and Rufus examine the shift that has taken place from a belief in the intrinsic value of the universe to the modernist view that denies the reality of value.Zak explains how this loss of value has contributed to the current metacrisis, impacting areas such as education, architecture, and technology. The concept of "civilizational transvaluation" and the dangers of a potential civilizational collapse during this period of profound change are also discussed. Alongside this, the potential for conscious evolution is explored, which could enable new forms of human cooperation and flourishing—provided that we establish an urgent, coherent discourse around value to address the challenges we are facing. This conversation supports the recent book First Principles and First Values: Forty-Two Propositions on CosmoErotic Humanism, the Meta-Crisis, and the World to Come. In this episode of Ordinary People, Rufus Pollock speaks with Kyle Kowalski, the founder of Sloww. Kyle shares his journey that led him from a high-powered marketing career to becoming a self-described "student of life" and creator of a digital platform dedicated to the art of living. In 2015 Kyle experienced a turning point that shattered his then current and conventional path and set him off on a deeper quest for meaning and purpose. Kyle candidly shares how he navigated the cognitive dissonance of staying in his unfulfilling job while simultaneously immersing himself in the world of intentional living, minimalism, and spiritual self-inquiry. Kyle's story highlights the power in questioning, learning, and trusting the unfolding of one's life journey. In this episode he shares insights into the stages of ego development, the impact of his family conditioning, and the joyful yet challenging process of transcending one's socialized identity. He's an ex-marketing executive turned self-education entrepreneur after an existential crisis. In one sentence, his purpose is synthesizing lifelong learning that catalyzes deeper development. But, he's not a professor, philosopher, psychologist, sociologist, anthropologist, scientist, mystic, or guru. He's an interconnector across all those humans and many more—an “independent, inquiring, interdisciplinary integrator” (in other words, it's just him, asking questions, crossing disciplines, and making connections). To keep it simple, you can just call him a “synthesizer,” and Sloww is his synthesis on the art of living for students of life. Over the last decade, Kyle has deeply explored lifelong learning, human development, intentional living, life purpose, mental mastery, and spiritual growth. On this episode of The Real ResQ Podcast, we join the San Diego Fire Department live at HAI Heli Expo 2024. Featuring Tim Olson - Helicopter Rescue Medic (HRM), Captain Paul Shuttleworth - Crew Chief and Deke McClintock - Pilot. These three guys sat down with me to tell a couple of their most memorable rescue stories. Olson recalls his first rescue as a 14 year old where a car crashed into a fountain. Shuttleworth then shares a story from his experience battling a large fire, while McClintock recounts his first rescue as a Pilot In Command (PIC). We continue with a story where Shuttleworth and McClintock responded to a rescue call for a victim hanging over a 100-foot cliff face as night approached. Having to move fast with limited visibility pressing them, a simple question asked over the Axnes system, “Are you good?” and the response, “I've got him,” made an emergent rescue both easier and successful. We close out talking about the Axnes system and the significant benefits it has had to their unit, missions, and better communications for all the crews. Enjoy! It all began when clients would ask founder of W.Rubens and former stylist, Michael Shuttleworth, the same question: where can I get a good white T-shirt? Michael didn't know. That's when he realised something was missing. And so the idea for W.Rubens was born. Nothing new or revolutionary. Just the idea to create a collection of beautifully made white t-shirts, using the finest fabrics, and investing in British talent. Every Rubens t-shirt is a work of craftsmanship, released in limited collections. They source the best fabrics and work with suppliers who care about the welfare of their workers and the planet. Collections are produced to order from a small atelier in London where they employ local workers. Each garment is made with an individual sense of identity and exclusivity, resulting in the perfect white t-shirt — minimalist, timeless, and iconic.Listener Offer: Use Discount Code: MENSWEAR15 for 15% off!
On our latest podcast, we chat about the aftermath of last week's Super Soap Week, covering what went on in Weatherfield between the 16th to the 18th October (Episodes #11085 - 11090). With Stephen now zipped up in a body bag and the finger of blame pointing squarely at Peter, the question on everyone's lips is, 'Should he be punished for taking a murderer's life?' There's no denying that Stephen had dropped the bottle before Peter accelerated towards him, but that certainly doesn't mean it's a cut and dry case for Swain and co - and it's great how much it's got the fans talking too! Also this week, Daisy finally drops her drawers for Ryan - it seemed inevitable, but we're certainly not happy about it! Meanwhile, Ed resorts to desperate measures to get his hands on some cash, and Lee lurches off from Shuttleworth's after a slip of the tongue from George - alas, we hardly knew ye! In the Kabin, we chat to a Corrie viewer who was at the fan event with Todd Boyce last week, and share our thoughts on the excellent Barbara Knox At 90 programme that aired last Friday. After a bumper feedback section where we hear some listeners' thoughts on the demise of Stephen Reid, we finish off the show with a spoiler Kabin Extra section, where we give our thoughts on some recent cast news. In this episode of the Life Itself Podcast, Rufus Pollock sits down with Professor Joseph Henrich to continue the discussion on the study of cultural evolution. In this episode the significance of family structures and the church takes center stage in their role towards shaping human societies. Joseph explains that different kinship networks influence behaviors, trust, and cooperation within societies and how the Catholic Church played an unintentionally role in shaping Western societies by implementing rules against cousin marriage and polygyny. These rules inadvertently fostered individualism, trust in non-kin relationships, and analytic thinking. These cultural shifts and networks of horizontal connections led to the development of "WEIRD" psychology – Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic, a topic discussed in Henrich's latest book. These cultural transformations resulted in the development of different psychological traits that help to explain the remarkable economic success, innovations, and current challenges faced by Western societies. In this episode of the Life Itself Podcast, Rufus Pollock sits down with Professor Joseph Henrich to continue the discussion on the study of cultural evolution. In this second part of the conversation continuing from episode 3, Rufus Pollock and Joe Henrich discuss the implications of cultural evolution in relation to modern challenges. They explore the potential for intentional experimentation in creating cultural norms that promote trust, cooperation, group cohesion and a sense of community and belonging. Rufus and Joe touch upon the idea that Western societies might be running on old values and norms cultivated by historical religious practices. They discuss the need to find ways to renew and revitalize these values, potentially by experimenting with intentional communities that incorporate elements of shared meaning, trust-building, ritual and cooperation. The talk moves on to discuss the idea that by allowing a variety of intentional communities to form and observing which ones thrive, societies could potentially find ways to address current challenges and promote positive cultural evolution. In this episode of the Life Itself Podcast, Rufus Pollock is joined by Dr Jeffery Martin. Jeffery is a founder of the Transformative Technology space, a serial entrepreneur, and a social scientist who researches personal transformation and the states of greatest human well-being. In this episode, Jeffery discusses Persistent Non-Symbolic Experience, more commonly referred to as Fundamental well-being. He discusses his research and key findings, and the protocols he has developed and tested to help people obtain "fundamental well-being" in a rapid, secular, and safe way. For notes, further resources, and to listen as a podcast, head to our website: About Dr Jeffery Martin For over 15 years Jeffery has conducted the largest international study on persistent non-symbolic experience (PNSE), which includes the types of consciousness commonly known as enlightenment, nonduality, the peace that passeth understanding, unitive experience, and hundreds of other terms. This resulted in the first reliable, cross-cultural and pan-tradition classification system for these types of experiences. It also led to the fundamental discovery that these were psychological states that had been identified and adopted for thousands of years by many cultures and belief systems. They were not inherently spiritual or religious, or limited to any given culture or population, and could be moulded in many ways to shape the experience. More recently, he has used this research to make systems available to help people obtain profound psychological benefits in a rapid, secular, reliable, and safe way. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette Digital News Desk, and I'm here with your update for Friday, June 30.According to the National Weather Service it will be a mostly cloudy day in the Cedar Rapids area on Friday, with a high near 89 degrees. There will be a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before noon, and a 40 percent chance after 7 p.m. A divided Supreme Court on Thursday struck down affirmative action in college admissions, declaring race cannot be a factor and forcing institutions of higher education to look for new ways to achieve diverse student bodies. The court's conservative majority effectively overturned cases reaching back 45 years in invalidating admissions plans at Harvard and the University of North Carolina, the nation's oldest private and public colleges, respectively. The decision will have widespread effects throughout the country for years to come, but, for now, Iowa's three public universities are not likely to be affected by the ruling. The University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa use a standardized rubric called the Regent Admission Index to determine undergraduate admissions. The index considers GPA, courses taken in core areas and ACT scores, and it does not factor in the applicant's race.University of Iowa spokesperson Jeneane Beck said the university's graduate and professional programs have their own criteria for admissions, and officials will be reviewing the ruling to ensure their recruiting and admissions standards align with best practices.Steve Emerson, the prolific local developer who's fueled the redevelopment of many downtown Cedar Rapids properties, closed Thursday on the purchase of the former Guaranty Bank property — setting in motion the transformation of a key site in the urban core.As the COVID-19 pandemic put a previous redevelopment plan that included a nine-story hotel and two restaurants on ice, Emerson's takeover will add either housing or hotel units to the heart of Cedar Rapids. The $2.8 million sale includes the Guaranty Bank and Old World Theater properties off Third Street and Third Avenue SE, as well as the Dragon Building a few blocks away on Second Avenue SE. These were owned by Guaranty Realty and were originally listed for $3.1 million.Meanwhile, the downtown building that formerly housed The Gazette is undergoing a $6.3 million remodeling process to become the new offices of the Shuttleworth & Ingersoll law firmThe Cedar Rapids City Council this week awarded financial incentives for the property at 500 Third Ave. SE, which is owned by developer Steve Emerson. The Gazette office was in the building for nearly 95 years before moving to 116 Third St. SE in August 2020, its fifth downtown location since the newspaper was founded in 1883.The project was awarded city financial incentives under the Green Building Economic Development Program as it will achieve LEED certification, a measure of its sustainability and energy efficiency.

In this week's episode, Dan reunites with an old friend to talk about online and hybrid social media community building and its challenges of the past, present and future. Joining him today is fellow Japan aficionado, super connector, brand expert, event master, and his friend of more than 20 years, Andrew Shuttleworth. He's currently the Head of Business Development, Japan and Asia Pacific for the Singapore-based innovation platform Agorize. Prior to that, Andrew held leadership roles at tech companies in Japan and Singapore and had his own consulting business in Japan focused on connecting customers, vendors, and people (called Customers Vendors People, naturally). He runs a community called Innovators United and chairs the Sales Leaders Peer Group for EGN in Singapore. Andrew talks in depth about creating, promoting, and regulating online and hybrid social platforms and networks. He reflects on the challenges faced by Net Tokyo, an organization he co-founded with Dan and other super connectors in Tokyo before social media became so ubiquitous. Prepare to be taken on a guided tour of how people connected at a time when social networking was unheard all the way through to when it finally caught on and changed everything. This is one episode you don't want to miss. In This Episode (03:32) Welcoming Andrew Shuttleworth to the Dan Nestle Show. (03:49) Talking about Net Tokyo, a community of communities he and Dan started before “The Facebook”. (10:51) How the idea of networking was ahead of its time back then. (13:49) Andrew's journey from a lad from Northern England to becoming the accidental business nomad. (19:44) Talking about the idea behind connecting people: to create value. (25:02) On the move to Singapore and still maintaining ties with Japan. (27:18) Andrew's role at Apple and how it aided his goal to connect people. (30:50) Being mindful of creating communities without over-commercializing them. (36:01) Indicators that show that the community is growing and interacting. (38:33) Andrew's take on current platforms when it comes to community creation. (42:51) Different tools for different generations such as Discord and Slack. (47:18) How size matters when it comes to building trustful communities. (50:59) Regulate, populate, and evaluate contributions from communities. (56:03) On Innovators United being a hybrid community with in-person events. (1:03:52) Andrew's advice to marketers today. (1:03:45) Final remarks from Andrew. Notable Quotes “I always had Southeast Asia on my map as kind of a natural next step from Japan, knowing that the economy here is just going to keep growing and growing for decades. There's a lot of similarities to Japan, but there's also a lot to learn and a lot to experience. I mean, one of the reasons I went to Japan was just to have this information in your face every day while you're walking around reading kanji. And the level of challenge in your life is kind of doubled just by being there, especially when you're new and young. And so, I wanted to experience that daily challenge of life again by going to a completely new place.” - Andrew (25:56) “When other people start introducing other relevant people to the community and talking about it, that's when you know it's really working. And actually, from the business perspective, the awareness when people come to you and say, ‘Hey, actually I want to hear about your product and service,' that is really nice because like you say, you're not doing it for business purposes, but there has to be some sort of win-win there.” – Andrew (36:01) “We can just continue to build and build communities and participate in communities. And you know, I think that by being community oriented, you've got. Already a kind of an advantage over a lot of other salespeople, marketers, whatever you want to call yourself at any given time. Look, we aren't old, but we aren't getting any younger. So, you know, to prepare ourselves for the future as we live longer and longer and longer, understanding community and the effects that has on people's behavior and just the idea of making relationships and connections and understanding that I think is going to be a massive advantage for you.” Dan (1:02:21) “My sales team, even though they're in Singapore, are maybe 30 minutes away. But what I've realized is and I think pretty much most people would agree with this, is that there's something totally different about getting together with people in person. I've built relationships, I've hired people. I've mentored people online. But when you get together and you have an in-person conversation, either 1 to 1 or especially in a group, the dynamics and the information exchange transforms. And it's as much as I love technology, you can't replace it, at least not at the moment.” Andrew (57:17) “I'm sure marketers are looking at this saying, okay, how do I, how do I work with community? My advice would be, assign a little bit of your budget to communities. Communities don't take a lot to fund. Um, but they do require money, right? You require money for a venue requirement, for some refreshments. And I think businesses can play a good part in enabling communities. But you aren't going to get your ROI next month or you're not going to get your ROI this quarter. So, it's up to the marketers to kind of learn how to justify this investment in communities.” Andrew (1:03:52) About Andrew Shuttleworth Andrew Shuttleworth is an expert in building communities. For over two decades, Andrew has been in sales, marketing, project management, and event production, overseeing all aspects of creating, populating, regulating, and promoting a community, whether online, in person, or hybrid. He's currently the head of business development, Japan and Asia Pacific for the innovation platform Agorize, based in Singapore.
