In this episode, Dr. Paul Wheatley-Price sits down with Shannon Farley, a Nurse Practitioner (NP) at the William Osler Health System in Brampton, ON. They chat about what an NP is and the difference with other types of nurses, current challenges in the ERs and how nurses play a role in "diverging" cancer patients away from the emergency room, and the role they play in a patients' oncology team.
Episode 251 hosts Pene Timberlake, a Nurse Practioner from Freshwater, Australia. Pene was one of our very first guests on IA (Episodes 3, 26 and 43) and is one of the country's most experienced nurse injectors. We first learn about her progression from being a Registered Nurse to a Nurse Practitioner (NP). We get an understanding about what this qualification entails and why this was so challenging. We also learn about why the door for nurses wanting to become aesthetic NP's is now effectively closed. In her first appearance on the podcast over five years ago, we re-visit the question of what makes a good cosmetic injector. With the landscape and regulations having changed so much in Australia, we explore the deeper issue of whether the bar has simply been set too low to become an injector? We ponder whether the changes that have been made were actually very necessary and what else needs to be done to create a recognised 'injecting' speciality. Completing the 200-mile Pan Mass Challenge (PMC) bike ride every year for two decades would be an accomplishment for anyone; but it's particularly remarkable in the case of Cycling Sue, who has ridden 10 of those 20 years with metastatic breast cancer. “I've had many friends who I've met through this journey,” Sue tells us in this third episode of a series on cycling and cancer. “And they aren't here. But I also know that they would say, ‘What are you crazy? Just keep pedaling!'” Sue entered into breast cancer treatment largely alone back in 2003 with her initial diagnosis. But she's since found a community of caregivers and patients through the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the PMC ride benefitting research there. In this episode (a first for My Body Odyssey), we speak with three of Sue's actual caregivers from Dana Farber, past and current, about the challenge of metastatic breast cancer, the benefits of exercise for cancer patients, and the motivational power of the PMC event. “She was all in, you know, welcoming me to Dana Farber like an ambassador,” recalls Jenn McKenna, Sue's Nurse Practitioner (NP), of their first meeting over a decade ago. “I just really liked her right away.” We'll also hear from Sue's current oncologist, Dr. Rachel Freedman of Dana Farber, as well as her former oncologist, Dr. Eric Winer, now President of the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale Medical. Through their insights, we get a deeper understanding of this chronic disease and the importance of a positive attitude like Sue's during the demanding rounds of treatment. “She doesn't spend… anytime feeling sorry for herself. None of that,” says NP Jenn McKenna of her patient and sometimes-Peloton-partner, Sue. “She just keeps living her life, doing all the things that make her happy in a way that we all should.” Some high quality inspiration on this episode with Cycling Sue. And amidst a lot of perspiration, too. In addition to completing the 200-mile ride this year, Sue has again claimed an additional title: The Sweatiest Person at the PMC Award. “You can't see it on the podcast, but I keep my wristband on for a few days and it's all gross and worn away,” she says in a boastful moment. “So I've crowned myself as The Sweatiest Person again.” Special thanks to Producer Debbie Blicher for her reporting on this episode. On television and in Internet commercials, we frequently see images of cheerful, dancing pills and happy humans with the voiceover, “Do you have XXX? Ask your doctor about YYY.” This is often followed by a horrifying list of possible side effects. As you will learn from Amanda Parrott, who has worked extensively with attorneys on class action and other suits against pharmaceutical companies, long as these lists are, they are often not all-inclusive. This podcast will introduce you to the several stages through which a drug is tested. You will also learn the various conditions for a manufacturer's liability. Negligence, fraud, and misrepresentation are reasons for liability. Another category is misuse, i.e., using a drug for a purpose for which it hasn't been approved. Amanda got involved in pharmaceutical liability cases on a very personal level when she noticed that certain patients appeared to be having side effects from a particular drug. She did research, attended related conferences, and got in contact with attorneys involved in a suit against the manufacturers. The attorneys recognized her passion on this subject and hired her on a contract basis. From her experience, she advises that if you get involved in this kind of work, you must know the expected side effects of a drug. Basically, know everything that drug is expected to do, understand its interactions with other drugs, and meticulously determine whether there could be other causes for a condition. As we've seen, cases against pharmaceutical companies are on the rise. If this field interests you, there's never been a better time to learn more. After completing her doctorate in Physical Therapy at New York University, she volunteered at Grote Schuur Hospital and the surrounding townships in South Africa. Her interest in infectious diseases and global health was sparked. Amanda deepened her knowledge in the medical field by completing her Master of Science and Nurse Practitioner degree at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). After graduating with honors, Amanda continued to work internationally and took her first position at UCSF in the infectious disease department as a clinician and researcher. On today's episode of the Soul Connection Duo Podcast, we chat with Emotional Alchemist, Mind-Body Practitioner and Master NLP Transformational Coach, Catherine Gagnon. Catherine is also a Neurosciences Practitioner, a Nurse Practitioner (NP), and is currently pursuing a doctorate in Natural Medicine and studying the Ancient Wisdom of Siddha Veda that stems from Ayurvedic medicine. Catherine shares her incredible story of how she cured herself from Lyme disease in ways that were truly unheard of in the traditional field of medicine. She explains that when we reconnect the mind and body, extraordinary things can happen to aid in the recovery from illnesses/diseases that many people do not recover from. During her healing journey, she also made the difficult decision to leave her profession as a NP all together, in order to pursue life-saving work from a more holistic approach as a transformational coach. As a natural empath, Catherine can see, hear and feel the emotional and physical "energy leaks" in people and her work helps people to identify and "plug" these leaks. We discuss what an energy leak is, how to pinpoint someone's biggest energy leaks, examples of energy leaks, and more! Catherine's clients report regaining their physical/emotional energy, recovering faster from illness, attaining mental clarity, self-confidence, feeling more at peace within themselves and happier in relationships, following sessions with her. We also learn about neuroscience, & how quantum physics and the law of attraction are one and the same. Catherine shares how change can be an uncomfortable journey, however these challenges are oftentimes placed in our path as an opportunity to level up our lives! She is a true inspiration of this, and has since created a thriving business that helps many others transform their health and wellness. Catherine has many free resources available on her website, www.catherinegagnon.ca, as well as 1:1 coaching, online courses, workshops and conferences. In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Shayna Melissa Stockman. Shayna's ah-ha moment was when she met a very special Nurse who left a lasting impression. Shayna thought, ‘OMG! She will never know how many lives she has impacted, and how many of those lives will, in turn, impact more lives..Nurses like to help people. I like to help people. Like her, I want to impact many lives that, in turn, impact many more lives! My passion to help others will create, not a mere rippling effect, but a massive tidal wave of people helping people, each putting smiles on even more faces!' This has led Shayna toward a life-long career in Nursing. Even though her grandfather was a pharmacist, learning from GrandMa, she wanted to emphasize a more natural approach that actually attacks the root cause. By age 26, she had earned 5 college degrees, 4 Nursing Licenses, 2 Nurse Practitioner (NP) licenses, a national Board Certification and a perfect 4.0 GPA with her post master's degree. She's now a RN (Registered Nurse) for 30 plus years & Nationally Board-Certified NP who is dual licensed as both an Adult & Child Health NP for 3 decades. After heart failure, near death and being left hopeless by the doctors, Shayna helped heal herself, and thousands of others, holistically, without medications. Shayna went from failing English and heart failure to helping heal herself and wrote about it in what became her #1 International Best-Selling book Overcoming Life Obstacles (OLO)!! In our last episode of Season 2 we welcome Kate Skeels, Stroke Advance Practice Nurse at Tufts Medical Center to the show. We picked the great discussion right up where we left off with her Tufts colleague Dr. Lester Leung from our previous episode. We learned what brought Kate from her western New York roots with her family to Boston and where she fell in love with the stroke patient population, met “baby” Lester and began growing the program at Tufts together “like 2 peas in a pod”. Curious? Listen to Kate tell the whole story in her interview!Including- How the addition of Kate to the Tuft's Team provides dual leadership and drives better outcomes for patients while allowing for the shared perspectives of Nurse Practitioner (NP) and Physician (MD) team model. This discussion through Kate's NP lens was fascinating. You'll learn about different advanced level NP providers and how Kate'e training opens her role up as an advanced practitioner, and how NPs deliver care similar to how quarterbacks plan, prepare and execute plays in the NFL! Well, this was Mike and I offering analysis of Kate's role in our show intro after learning all she does every day! In fact, we decided to give her the title of the Tom Brady of the Tufts Comprehensive Stroke Center (even though she still is a Buffalo Bills fan, sorry Patriots Nation!)Carrying the team discussion into a deeper dive of the SAYA Program and Stroke Clinic with Kate we learned how they manage patients at their high risk stroke clinic, offer telehealth, group and in person visits to provide longitudinal stroke care support as “care is needed at different points in a season of stroke”. Love this! Also we learn how they go the extra mile at Tufts to manage and personalize care including how the team often has a “discharge time out” (yes, another football reference, how fitting!) to stop, regroup and build a plan for the patient that offers help around the focus of attention needed when discharge weaknesses are discovered. You'll also learn about the great educational efforts Kate and her team are involved with through their Annual Tufts Stroke Symposium to share stroke education with other providers. Finally, Kate's magic wand answer, well let's just say she scored a touchdown on this one with Mike and I ! Give it a listen as part of your own stroke game plan!As always, "in the News” segment- Mike and I discussed the climbing rates of high blood pressure since the start of the pandemic and with it increased stroke risks. Here's that article link. You'll also want to watch this interview on YouTube just to see where in the world my co-host Mike was when we recorded this episode! Dr. Trompeta discusses several areas of interest, including her concerns about disparities impacting Asian American, Pacific Islander and Latino populations; her work in Hawaii; how younger Latinos with kidney disease are facing unique challenges relating to immigration; and her travels to Japan, where stigma and cultural beliefs have limited organ transplantation, but where the younger generations are now leading change with a little help from Kumamon, Japan's most popular bear. In this episode Dr. K is joined with Gaby Udabor, a Nurse Practitioner (NP) and wellness expert. Gaby is the founder and CEO of Gaby U Health and Wellness Hub https://www.gabyuhealthhub.com. I this podcast Gaby discusses the elements of functional health and how it serves to prevent and reverse chronic illnesses. Functional Medicine is a systems biology-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of a disease. Functional medicine clinics take the holistic approach to understand who you are, knowing that every person is unique and should have a medical plan that is custom fit for their needs. Instead of determining which drug will cure a disease, functional medicine clinics have doctors that discover why you have an ailment in the first place, and to restore what's no longer functioning. Think of medicine in terms of a science experiment. Experiments with limited variables are easier to find solutions for. The more complex the problem, the more difficult the solution becomes. The human body is full of variables. Lifestyle, genetic makeup, personality, and environmental factors are just a few, and within each of these basic categories are countless more variables. Too often, traditional physicians treat the disease and not the patient. They don't take the time–and, in their defense, can't take the time–to understand all of the variables that make you unique. While the standard model of care works well for acute diseases, trauma, infection, and emergencies, it fails to care for the chronic diseases. To all of you who work sleepless nights in hospitals to care for others this year (and every year) - we salute you. It hasn’t been an easy year for anyone. People who have had to directly interact with and treat patients who were diagnosed with the Coronavirus had unique challenges. Not only did they have to deal with the global uncertainties and their own families, but they also had to be present and strong for their patients. Heather Isola, the Director of Physician Assistants at Mount Sinai Health System, chats with us today on how healthcare workers in her hospital dealt with some of these challenges behind the scenes. She starts off by explaining some of the differences in the role of a Physician’s Assistant (PA), Nurse Practitioner (NP), and other healthcare professionals. She then dives into the severe impact that COVID-19 had in New York City, the reconfiguration and adaptability of the healthcare system, and issues that healthcare professionals have in addressing their emotional needs.Heather directs over 900 PAs for excellence in patient-care and operations. Heather has spent the last 10 years clinically working at a Urogynecology PA at the Faculty Practice of Mount Sinai specializing in women’s health, contraception management, incontinence, pelvic floor health, and vaginal health. Her goals is to operationalize Advanced Practice Providers to operate at top of licensure to increase patient care, safety, quality and throughput while utilizing the versatility, strength and team collaboration that PAs bring to the healthcare delivery of Mount Sinai Health System.
*This post contains affiliate linksMona served 20 years in the US Army Nurse Corps. Initially, she was a staff nurse working rotating shifts. However, this wreaked havoc with my childcare scheduling. A year into service I learned of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) program the army had started with the promise of working clinic hours (M-F 0730 -1630) upon completion. A practical solution for her as it fits perfectly with daycare hours for her little girls (ages 2 & 4). She loved her choice and remained a women's health care NP and women's advocate for most of her career.Mona and I connected through her new book, Not Created Equal. Her book shares her experience of growing up, being in an abusive marriage, and joining the Army after her divorce. It was a unique and interesting and unique perspective of growing up as a Muslim immigrant in America during the 1970s. In our interview, we focused on her military experience. How she came to join the Army after initially applying for the Air Force and getting no response. The struggle of being a single mom with unreliable childcare for her crazy shifts. She also talks about becoming one of the first Nurse Practitioners to get the opportunity to work a normal schedule. We also covered her time in Germany where she met her second husband, traveled all over Europe including some of the Eastern block countries before the Berlin Wall fell. She also talked about the inner conflict she felt during the first Gulf War (Desert Storm). Being an American, but also having her culture from Egypt. She ended her career in Virginia and was able to stay in Virginia by both her and her husband going to Korea in back to back years. But the stability it gave her daughters who were now in middle school and high school was worth the sacrifice. She decided to write her memoir for her girls, but she also was encouraged by friends. She also wrote a letter and told her story to President Barrack Obama and he encouraged her to write her story as well. It is an interesting and unique perspective. Nurses, it’s time to give it all you’ve got. That’s right, remember… nursing is a career of service. And who better to serve than yourself? The very best way to continue to go that extra mile is through being mindful to take care of you along the way. Charisse Hughson-Chitolie, FNP-C is a native of Roanoke, Virginia, the “Star City”. Charisse is a board-certified nurse practitioner. She continues to remain in the behavioral health realm and is currently a mid-level provider for the adolescent, adult, and geriatric outpatient and inpatient populations. Charisse works as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) at Summit Ridge Hospital and Lakeview Behavioral Health Hospital. She is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and The United Advanced Practice Registered Nurses of Georgia. Charisse started a concierge I.V. Hydration company IHYDRA8 a year ago with her daughters.
