NOTE: This podcast was recording in November, 2024. Today, Clark and Matt are joined once again by our dear friend, Nidhi Sachdeva. We talk about Desirable Difficulties, originally coined by Robert Bjork and further explored with him and his wife, Elizabeth Bjork. A great overview paper can be found here: https://bjorklab.psych.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/13/2016/04/EBjork_RBjork_2011.pdf Of course, we talk about the five strategies to foster desirable difficulties: Spaced Learning/ Distributed Practice Retrieval Practice/ The Testing Effect Interleaving Contextual Interference Reduced Feedback We even take a brief detour on whether note taking is effective. And of course, the answer is nuanced... see more here, from Paul Kirschner: https://3starlearningexperiences.wordpress.com/2023/05/09/longhand-notetaking-is-worth-using/ Clark references Mihaly Robert Csikszentmihalyi's Flow... and frankly, the wiki page on it is pretty darn good. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_(psychology)#:~:text=Flow%20state%20theory%20suggests%20that,key%20determinant%20of%20learning%20success. He also mentions Lev Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_of_proximal_development Matt references Thiagi's jolt called THE DAYS OF THE WEEK. However, the conference is now past. But, Nidhi will be at the upcoming LDA The Evidence-Informed Practitioner Conference in April, 2025 and repeating her work in the 2025 Learning Science Conference. ________________________________________________ More about Nidhi… Nidhi Sachdeva is an evidence-informed learning designer, post-secondary educator, researcher, and educational technology specialist. Recently, she has been researching this through microlearning and cognitive science. Nidhi is the co-author of a newsletter called The Science of Learning, which aims to reduce gaps between educational research and instructional practice. She also chaired the ResearchEd Toronto conference 2024, ' Discovering the Science of Learning.' Summary In this conversation, Andy interviews Manu Kapur about his book Productive Failure: Unlocking Deeper Learning Through the Science of Failing. They explore the concept of learning through failure and how it can be intentionally designed to enhance understanding and retention. They discuss the importance of context in learning and the science behind memory. Manu and Andy discuss practical strategies for effective learning, particularly in relation to project management and certification exams. Manu introduces the notion of productive failure and its significance in the learning process. He emphasizes the importance of engaging with challenges, understanding the four A's of learning, and applying these principles in real-world scenarios. Manu even shares some ideas for how parents can help their kids reframe how they look at failure. Want to improve your memory? Learn faster? This episode is for you! Drawing insights from their research on beekeeping, they explore how leaders can optimize their "hives" by fostering collaboration, self-awareness, and meaningful work. They emphasize that culture starts with leadership and requires humility, self-reflection, and a commitment to unlearning old habits. Key topics include the importance of self-awareness in leadership, replacing the golden rule with the platinum rule (treating others as they want to be treated), and making challenging decisions to maintain a healthy organizational environment. Michael and Katie also highlight the concept of "pollinating" an organization by prioritizing growth and learning at all levels and creating psychologically safe environments where individuals can thrive. This episode offers practical strategies for leaders who want to build stronger, more cohesive teams and drive transformative growth in their organizations. As Ruckus Makers, we have to continually turn the lens to be able to self reflect, to think about value creation.” -Katie Desiderio “We can't let that serve as a blind spot for us to think about the impact on the collective whole. For all of us to be able to hit the pause button to say, ‘I probably could have done that better,' or ‘how could I rephrase that or how could I look at this from a different lens to try to do it different or to bring someone else that might be more effective than I am in this space.'” -Katie Desiderio “If you don't have a philosophy that you can share how you're going to lead the good, the bad, and ugly and share it, then the environment that you're creating may not be one that's vulnerable and authentic, and people will just see you as kind of a hierarchical leader. And that's not what we're trying to encourage. We're trying to convert, encouraging buyers where everybody can lead from every seat. It's okay to bring your best self to work, come as you are, choose the lens you want, but let's all work at this together.” -Michael Frino “When we think about being innovators and disruption and demonstrating a ruckus, you have to go through a process, and it has to be messy. It can't be so rigid. The best ideas come when the process is messy, and you have to allow yourself permission to do that. Some people are really uncomfortable in that space, but getting out of your comfort zone, whiteboarding, brainstorming, being messy, will bring to life brand new ideas, brand new concepts, and probably allow people who have really great ideas to speak up that may not otherwise be heard, be messy.” -Michael Frino Get a copy of the episode transcript here! He graduated from the University of Rochester with an M.S in Teaching, Curriculum, and Development and upon graduation, left for Japan where he served as a college Professor for five years in a variety of institutions teaching English as a Second Language, English literature, writing, and other advanced classes. Upon returning to New York City in 2000, he found himself at the tail end of Dot Bomb 1.0, and we all know how that went! He served in a variety of marketing positions beginning in 2001 and was lucky enough to learn the field from the ground up from being hands-on as well as from some incredible Mentors in the field. Along the way--while serving in a variety of higher level positions, he caught the entrepreneur bug and in 2001 (when absolutely nobody knew what a kettlebell was) ended up finding, scaling (with no outside capital), and eventually exiting a leading B2B education company KettleBell Concepts. In this solo episode, Alexa dives into the common struggles of imposter syndrome, low confidence, and feeling overwhelmed that many singing teachers face. As an experienced voice instructor and singer herself, Alexa shares personal stories and insights on managing these challenges in your teaching career and life. Learn how to overcome negative self-talk, build your confidence both in and out of the studio, and avoid burnout through self-care and planning. KEY TAKEAWAYS Imposter syndrome, low confidence, and overwhelm are common among singing teachers. Imposter thoughts prevail due to isolation, comparison, and teaching observations. These feelings stem from self-doubt, fear of judgement, and perfectionism. Strategies like reframing thoughts and celebrating achievements can counter imposter syndrome. Perspective-taking and building a support network are beneficial. Despite accomplishments, imposter syndrome affects individuals across fields, emphasising the importance of sharing experiences for community support. You can build a support network by joining online communities and forums, attending conferences, and seeking mentorship. Forming mastermind groups, scheduling catch-ups, and following inspirational accounts on social media offer additional support. Investing in a coach and being open with students about imposter feelings can also aid in managing challenges. BEST MOMENTS "100% of them reported having felt imposter syndrome, low confidence and overwhelm." "The most common intrusive thoughts reported include 'Just quit. You don't know enough' and 'You don't have the skills.'" "Sometimes, I am completely overwhelmed by the amount of information and responsibility I'm faced with as a singing teacher." Welcome to the Educational Renaissance podcast, where we promote a rebirth of ancient wisdom for the modern era. We seek to inspire educators by fusing the best of modern research with the insights of the great philosophers of education. Join us in the great conversation and share with a friend or colleague to keep the renaissance spreading. In today's episode, Patrick will discuss how we teachers can 'get in the zone' ... the zone of proximal development. He starts out giving a history of Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky and his theories developed 100 years ago, and then discusses how they can be applied today. Patrick elaborates on the 3 central concepts of Vygotsky's work, and then shows how they come together to create the zone of proximal development. At the end, he shares several tools you can use in the classroom to "get in the zone". Music: https://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music

Throughout the Covid 19 Crisis we have heard adults from all walks of life speak on the effect that this pandemic has had on our kids. Parents, teachers, politicians, media figures and scholars have described the toll of remote learning on students. The “concerns” have largely focused on issues centered around younger students and their parents: Childcare, “learning loss” of elementary school kids and the developmental effects of screentime. We have not really spent a significant amount of time delving into the issues our older students have been facing. I recall one of my early guests making the astute observation that her high school students were likely depressed. In this episode Justin confirmed that this has been his experience during his junior and senior year of high school. So, my question is: did we fail our High School students by focusing on the needs of our younger kids? What does Covid 19 look like through teenage eyes? Did we drop the ball in supporting our older students? Do they feel prepared for college after a year a half of remote learning? www.zoneofproximaldevelopment.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoneofproximaldevelopment/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoneofproximaldevelopment/support
Throughout the Covid 19 Crisis we have heard adults from all walks of life speak on the effect that this pandemic has had on our kids. Parents, teachers, politicians, media figures and scholars have described the toll of remote learning on students. However, I haven't seen very many kids represented in the media telling their stories. Last week, I spoke with a middle schooler about his experiences with remote learning. He was very clear about his feelings on the experience. This week I am speaking to a younger crowd: Two second graders help us see the Covid crisis through their young eyes and perspectives. What do the kids think? What does Covid 19 look like through 8-year old eyes? How do they feel about going back to school full time next year? www.zoneofproximaldevelopment.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoneofproximaldevelopment/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoneofproximaldevelopment/support
Our first special guest is a very good friend of mine! She has her own podcast that you have to listen to within this episode. We talk about education restructuring, a possible 4th stimulus, the current housing deficit crisis, and much more!
The Covid 19 Crisis has upended our lives in ways we had never imagined to be possible. We were asked to do our part and stay home to flatten the curb. We have all felt the terrible practical and emotional burden of this pandemic. I have had the privilege of speaking with adults in a variety of roles within the school system, but this week I thought it was time to talk to another demographic in the frontline of the educational system: the student. What do the kids think? What would the kids do differently from the adults running the school system ? How do they feel about Ed-Tech? We, understandably, want to get past the Covid19 crisis. It makes sense that after a year and a half of uncertainty, scarcity, and fear, as the vaccines become readily available and cities open up, we want to simply move on. Yet, how do we do that? How do we cope with all the trauma? This week I got to speak to someone who is usually one of the most optimistic I interact with; she is one of the kindest, most down-to-earth people I have known. However, despite her usual disposition, Naomi is skeptical about the ways we go forward from here. She loves teaching, and she will continue to give her students her all. Still, her approach has fundamentally changed after teaching through Covid. Where do we go from here? What's still important in education and what isn't? Will teachers ever get a fair shot? https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/zone-of-proximal-development/id1557165654 www.zoneofproximaldevelopment.com A Year of Remote Learning: A Teacher's Reflection on Teaching Through Covid Please rate and subscribe and find us on social media through our website! Hi everyone! So we're on Spring Break this week (my spring break is super late)... well I a, because my school schedules its Spring Break after State testing. Usually I'm on board with this arrangement, but this year, after teaching through Covid and not getting a Spring Break at all last year (I know... CRAZY TOWN), I would have loved to have it earlier. Here we are though, grateful to have it at all. So, please use this opportunity to catch up on episodes you might have missed and let's link up next week for more Zone of Proximal Development! Stay safe everyone, much love from this side of the microphone! www.zoneofproximaldevelopment.com A Year of Remote Learning: A Teacher's Reflection on Teaching Through Covid Please rate and subscribe and find us on social media through our website! How do so many teachers manage to keep themselves sane and on message despite all the issues in our education system? This week I got to speak to one of those teachers who always seemed to know the secret to staying present for her kids and above the nonsense of the system. Ms. Hall taught me to do what I'm told so I can do what I want--to teach my kids. I continue to learn from her all the time and I am so excited for you all to meet her. Whose job is it to teach? Make them think it's their idea. We're teachers, let's teach. www.zoneofproximaldevelopment.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoneofproximaldevelopment/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoneofproximaldevelopment/support
Is it just me or does the nonsense that surrounds teaching go up to 11 in the spring? It's like a switch goes off on the policy makers and Admins' minds and they become zombies in BS mode as soon as the equinox hits. Please stop by the Zone of Proximal Development Teachers' Lounge and help me make sense of all the exasperation, mixed emotions and victories of life as a teacher when you add teaching through Covid to the mix. Everything we thought we knew about education changed this year, so next year, let's do everything we had been doing before because that makes sense, or something. Failing upwards in educational leadership. How can teachers be proactive in addressing the devaluation of our profession and our humanity? We're teaching through Covid-19 so we can do ANYTHING! www.zoneofproximaldevelopment.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoneofproximaldevelopment/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoneofproximaldevelopment/support
Everyone I know has gone into teaching from a place of idealism. To enter this field without hope would only cause relentless cognitive dissonance. How can we work with youth and not have faith in change and progress? As time goes on, the challenges we face as teachers can make us feel as though faith in the system of education is misplaced. I'm likely to think it is, but the belief in our students is not. It is that faith that keeps us going despite systemic failure. It is this faith that has likely kept us going through the chaos of teaching through Covid. This week I was reminded that there might still be room for optimism in education. Is there still room for optimism in teaching? How do we find our way back to teaching? As Americans, we have the bad habit of introducing ourselves using job titles and career paths. Even I, an introvert with a very low tolerance for small talk, find myself telling people I am a teacher before telling them anything else about myself. Teaching is undoubtedly a unique profession and an enormous part of my life. Still, it does not occupy the entirety of my identity. I'm very excited to have this conversation with Theresa, a creative arts teacher, about teaching–the job–in the time of Covid. Is teaching a job? What is the role of the teacher? Are there teachers in the future? www.zoneofproximaldevelopment.com A Year of Remote Learning: A Teacher's Reflection on Teaching Through Covid --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoneofproximaldevelopment/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zoneofproximaldevelopment/support
