Episode 251 hosts Pene Timberlake, a Nurse Practioner from Freshwater, Australia. Pene was one of our very first guests on IA (Episodes 3, 26 and 43) and is one of the country's most experienced nurse injectors. We first learn about her progression from being a Registered Nurse to a Nurse Practitioner (NP). We get an understanding about what this qualification entails and why this was so challenging. We also learn about why the door for nurses wanting to become aesthetic NP's is now effectively closed. In her first appearance on the podcast over five years ago, we re-visit the question of what makes a good cosmetic injector. With the landscape and regulations having changed so much in Australia, we explore the deeper issue of whether the bar has simply been set too low to become an injector? We ponder whether the changes that have been made were actually very necessary and what else needs to be done to create a recognised 'injecting' speciality. After 50,000 patient encounters, she recognized the limits of traditional medicine to achieve true wellness. She pioneered innovative solutions, with cutting-edge science for sustainable and vibrant mental and physical health for her clients. Lea Durante Vroom Vroom Veer Stories In middle school in wine country in California she competed in doing gymnastics while riding a horse…I didn't even know that was a thing--made it to world championships in Hungary The achievement bug stuck and she overachieved her way to the top of her clas in college and grad school Worked as a nurse (Regestered Nurse and Nurse Practioner) in primary care; saw 30 patients everyday for about 15 each--at some point she realized patients were not getting better This led her to question what she was doing and to start learning about person development and find new ways to help people outside the medical system Helps people use tools quickly to change their subconscious mind--change your triggers into glimmers by listening for that voice in your head and get curious about what it tells you to do Turns out, there's an entire evidence base to support living authentically and aligned without excess discipline and willpower--and you don't have to spent your whole day drinking green juice and meditating Her veer was SLOW from Family Nurse Practitioner to Integrative Health Coach as shifting identities and facing critics was a journey of mistakes, missteps before finally finding my way to innovative change work. Looking back all the dots connect now, but it was a 5 years wandering veer that brought her to this most impactful and incredible place. Her work now focuses on stress reduction, burnout recovery and helping others achieve the vibrant mental & physical health they desire. She discovered fascinating tools in neuroplasticity, subconscious reprogramming and nervous system regulation that enable us to move through life with vibrant energy Connections Website Free 2 Part MasterClass - Live on zoom Wed Jan 24th and Thursday Jan 25th at 9am

Talking with Nurse Practioner, Podcaster and my good friend Kali Dayton (of Walking Home from the ICU and Walking through the ICU) about the benefits of the awake and walking ICU model. We talk about life in ICU and the effects of 'treatments' in a patient's long term recovery. We talk about my favourite topic delirium and the things we do in ICU that risk increasing instances or duration of delirium. Kali is a wonderful person who works very hard to improve the ICU environment for patients by reducing the practice of sedating all intubated patients and getting them back moving as soon as possible. The Old adage an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure really applies to her work. If you stop patients deconditioning then you don't need to put them through long rehabilitation afterwards. We have the pleasure of meeting Tesia Love to today's podcast. She is an Ayurvedic Practitioner and a Licensed Massage and Bodywork Therapist who specializes in Ayurvedic body therapies. She describes Ayurveda as Indian traditional medicine that is a cousin to traditional Chinese medicine. The main principle of Ayurveda is living in harmony with nature; your own constitution and outside. She recommends an Ayurveda consultation as a first step but some of her clients come to massage first. Ayurveda massage uses lots of warm oil which is very grounding. The focus of the work is with energy and the lymphatic system which is purifying and detoxifying. These massages can be customized to your own constitution. These massages differ from other massages in that they are deeply relaxing and grounding. So much so that Tesia recommends taking it easy for the rest of the day after. An Abhyanga massage will work on the subtle body and use lots of oil rubbed over the entire body. A Shirodhara massage will have a constant stream of oil poured over the forehead. "That treatment {Shirodhara}, you are laying on the table, the oil is streaming down consistently. It's almost like a mother gently rubbing her hand over a child's head." Tesia's journey to her current work started as a life-long passion and curiosity of all things health and wellness. She found out about Ayurveda in 2000 and was interested in it for it's ability to getting to the root cause of ailments. In 2010, she completed her 200-hour Yoga teacher training and started studying with the California College of Ayurveda in 2011. A Charlotte native, Tesia moved back in 2014 and completed Massage Therapy School at TMTI. Currently, she is finishing up her 300-hour Yoga teacher training with Lisa Moore, focused on Ayurveda Therapeutic Yoga. Tesia describes Ayurveda as comprehensive. It takes in account what you eat, your lifestyle, how you eat, what time you go to bed and wake up, herbs, bodywork, and yogic practices. Ayurveda comes from nature and considers the 5 elements(ether, air, fire, water, and earth) the building blocks of life. Each Dosha(vata, pitta, kapha) are made up of 2 elements. Vata is the quality of movement; dryness, coldness, circulation, elimination, thoughts. Pitta is the quality of transformation; metabolism, digestion. Kapha is the quality of heaviness; cohesion, growth, building. She describes the process of Doshas getting into excess and that is where imbalances are formed and using opposites to heal. For example, warm oil and slow strokes with a massage can counteract a Vata imbalance. "That's a huge motivation behind my work is helping to empower people to be well so they can do what it is they are here to do." Tesia is one of the few people in Charlotte who do this work. She is passionate about working with women and their health; fertility, postpartum, perimenopause). She has specialized training in Pregnancy and Postpartum massage. Many practitioners have been influential in her work over the years including: Dr. Andrew Weil, an Integrative Medical Doctor, Dr. Lad, an Ayurveda Doctor in New Mexico, Deepak Chopra, Maya Tiwari, focused on women's health, and KP Khalsa, an herbalist. In the Charlotte community, Tesia is inspired by Gracienne Jean Pierre who is a Nurse Practioner and Integrative Health Consultant, Lisa Moore who is a therapeutic Yoga teacher and Ayurveda Practioner, and The Sanctuary in the City organization who make wellness resources available to the Black and Indigenous populations. Connect with Tesia on her website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Insight Timer.

PTSD in the youth of the Virgin Islands dovetails in to the cumulative effects of stress on individuals in general. "I want to be positive influence in the community as well as touching on how individual PTS is for each person. We are allowed to accept personally what ever we can but I want to give a solution to surviving and flourishing in the ashes of trauma. I am a PST person starting very young and that is why I decided to come here in the face of disaster. I knew that i had the tools to handle what was coming. I want all to get the tools as they are not sold at Home Depot but need to be generated out of our own selves with the help of talented and dedicated mentors." Mary McVeanWelcome Mary McVean MS APRN BC. Mary did 2 theses on Stress Management and Resiliency factor in adults that were traumatized as children in some way. What wellness means to you? I believe in physical, mental and spiritual wellness and make every attempt to integrate these aspects in my daily practice, especially in Primary Care. I would like a patient to feel that they are not “seen” but are having a “ visit” while I am evaluating and treating the whole person. A person can have a condition that is grave such as cancer but if they are emotionally and spiritually aligned with it they are in fact “well”. Why are you concerned about Post Traumatic Stress in our Youth? The "Community Needs Assessment" I reviewed, after listening to the fabulous RWW Pod Cast with Dr. Norine Michel, (5/1/2019 S1 E41) and confirmed what I have been seeing in my office at Red Hook Family Practice since October of 2017. While the numbers will not be totally assessed until later this year in the CNA, I reviewed the outcome of the research done with Hurricane Katrina and children. It clearly points out that the longer schools are closed, the more disruption, such as the 3 schools that have closed on St Thomas. These closures disrupted the children even more. The disruption of the hours of school, coupled with the sharing of the remaining buildings, will have more long term impacts on the individual children who suffer with PTS. The normal milestones are regressed or even missed during a time of trauma. This results over time in less overall schooling, decreased economics, delayed motor development, lower IQ, more behavioral problems and lower test scores. Children cannot process loss and the higher the stress of the caregiver the higher the children's stress as well. Many children were unsupervised or disrupted by having to go to work with their caregiver or stay with folks who truly have poor coping skills with young children. It is a fact that repetitive trauma compounds all of this and that is exactly what we had with Hurricanes Irma and Maria. So, this is where your work in the 90s, with the Resiliency Thesis, comes into play? My thesis was part of a larger Doctoral, my professor was doing on Eating Disorders, specifically in the female gender. The qualitative research I did resulted in proving that at least one, preferably 2 or more mentors for at least 18 months resulted in a positive outcome as far as developing a functional life. The definition of resiliency included education, partnering, jobs and having children without issues like incarceration, legal issues in general and self sufficiency. What are you proposing will help these children here in the USVI? What I am suggesting, Paul, is that the numerous private sector groups in our religious sects, athletic groups, musicians groups, writers groups that provide this wonderful selection of mentors on these incredible islands of the US territories be tapped and step up to the plate for these children. Rotary was such a wonderful part of my life as a child and my Dad was the president in my city for a number of years. We are so lucky to have all of these groups and especially Rotary to fulfill our large challenge

"Whatever it was, we were gonna stop talking about it and we were gonna do it!" Latrina Walden's money story is not unlike so many others in this country - Curtis and I included. She was smart, driven, and had an entrepreneurial spirit, the only problem is she lacked a solid money foundation and was swimming in six-digit student loan debt. FINDING THE FIRE COMMUNITY She felt the burden and was ashamed by the amount of debt she was carrying and through a fortuitous conversation with an old friend and fellow FIRE community member, Naseema McElroy, Latrina found the FIRE community about a year ago. And what a year it has been... Latrina is a busy wife, mother, professor and Nurse Practioner. She and her husband reside in Atlanta with their two children. After finding the FIRE community, she and her husband resolved to finally start telling their money where to go and implemented a budget. For them, it was never an issue of income, but one of not being intentional with the way they spent their money. $500,000 IN NEGATIVE NET WORTH The weight of the amount of their debt was a heavy burden and it sometimes made Latrina question whether or not she belonged in the FIRE community. Debt shame is a real thing. But instead of shrinking from the overwhelm of their situation, Latrina and her husband started making swift changes. They decided to stop talking about taking action and to just jump feet first by taking immediate control of their finances. FIND WHAT YOU ARE GOOD AT Something incredible happened while they were going through this process, Latrina stumbled upon a new business. She saw a need and stepped in to fill in. She began offering tutoring services via the internet for nurses to prep for exams. She loves teaching and loves nursing and this business was a way for her to marry two of the things she was passionate about and REALLY good at. To her surprise and amazement, the business took off organically mostly by word of mouth on Facebook. In a matter of five months, her business has grown to a six-figure online business that has already paid off over $360,000.00 of their debt and will pay off the remainder of it, including their house by the end of the year. And if that were not amazing enough, her business is on track to bring in 1.5 million dollars by the end of the year. How incredible is that! THE IMPACT OF CREATING GENERATIONAL WEALTH What makes the growth of her business so special, is not just because it will allow her family to be Financially Independent in their lifetime - but it will change her family tree. The impact of building wealth on the lives of her children their legacy is far-reaching. The thought of that is overwhelming - in a good way. Latrina and her family recognize the wonderful blessing this business has been for them and have plans to begin a non-profit to help struggling nursing students as a way of showing gratitude for what they have been given. Good people. LATRINA ON THE FINAL QUESTIONS What is One Money Lesson She Learned as a Child That She has Carried Over Into Her Financial Journey? Have a plan. It's OK to blow up that plan, even if it fails. One day you will get it right. One Money Lesson She Wants to Pass on to Her Children: It's OK to talk about money!
