Strange though it may seem, our vocal cords are among our most vital organs. Not only do they allow us to communicate, but they make it possible to swallow without letting food or fluids into our lungs, a dangerous phenomenon that can cause pneumonia. It's a complex action, requiring the work of 48 different muscles. Dr. Omid Mehdizadeh is an otolaryngologist—a surgeon who specializes in the head and neck. His specialty is laryngology—complex voice and swallowing disorders. Many patients come to him when they age, or after they have a stroke, both of which can impair the vocal cords. Dr. Mehdizadeh has lots of techniques to help them, some of which you wouldn't suspect. As vocal cords age, they lose some of their mass, making it harder for them to close. In those cases, Dr. Mehdizadeh often turns to the same stuff that plastic surgeons use to plump up lips: a filler called Juvederm, or one like it. He injects the cords, giving them new life. In that sense, Dr. Mehdizadeh is a plastic surgeon for the vocal cords. We're back this week with an industry visionary who has spent the last 10 years leading marketing and training efforts in the Aesthetic Industry. After business school, Drew Fine spent 10 years at Eli Lilly honing his craft in Diabetes marketing before moving to Galderma, where in the course of his nearly 7 years there as VP of Marketing, he led multiple launches of new FDA approved products, played a major role in the development of GAIN, and in many ways, masterminded the rise to dominance of the Restylane, Dysport and Sculptra brands under the ownership of Nestle Skin Health. From there, he moved to Allergan as VP of Marketing for the Facial Injectable Portfolio for nearly two years where he had his hands in Juvederm, Botox and AMI marketing efforts. But now, he's taking on a whole new challenge…. At the start of 2023, Drew was named the Chief Commercial Officer at Advanced MedAesthetic Partners. Phrases like “50 is the new 30” are popular these days but is there basis in fact?  Dr. Bass discusses how lifestyle changes in the past few decades and the ascendance of non-surgical techniques in plastic surgery –often termed aesthetic medicine –have transformed how we look at a given age.  These changes have also transformed our expectations of how long we will be able to stay looking young.  Botox, injectable fillers like Restylane and Juvederm, energy based devices like lasers and advances in skin care (cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical skin products) comprise the bulk of what's been happening in aesthetic medicine.  Dr. Bass discusses the role of each, what age is a good time to start and what a combined program of care can produce.

Most people focus of the facelift when they think of plastic surgery, and rightly so as it is still the main reset for facial aging. Still, there are several decades of facial aging before a facelift is indicated. During this time, a plan of treatment is needed to correct the earlier aging changes taking place, as well as to maintain appearance and prevent or slow the onset of facial aging. In fact, non-surgical treatments of the face have become by far the predominate treatments being provided these days. There are non-surgical modalities that are used in concert to create the desired anti-aging and rejuvenation appearance goals. Medicated skin products, laser and energy based treatments and injectables like neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau) and fillers (e.g. Restylane, Juvederm and a growing list of others) are mixed and matched based on what features are aging and the preferences and lifestyle limitations of the individual to prevent and restore early facial aging.
