Arkansas: The Fouke Monster

In May of 1971, a young couple named Bobby and Elizabeth Ford rented a small frame house outside the tiny town of Fouke, Arkansas. They'd been there less than a week when something reached through their front window in the middle of the night and changed their lives forever. By morning, Bobby Ford was in a Texarkana hospital being treated for shock and abrasions, the local constable and county sheriff were photographing three-toed tracks in the yard, and a story that had been quietly told around kitchen tables in Miller County for nearly a hundred years was about to spill out into the national press. This episode walks through the full history of the Fouke Monster, from the 1908 Jonesville reports and the decades of quiet family stories that came before, through the Ford family attack on the night of 5/1/1971, and into the media wave that brought hunters, reporters, and a thousand and ninety dollar bounty to a town of a few hundred people. We dig into the work of Smokey Crabtree, the lifelong Fouke resident who became the unofficial chronicler of the case and wrote some of the most important primary-source books on the subject. We cover the production and release of Charles B. Pierce's 1972 docudrama The Legend of Boggy Creek, a film made on a hundred thousand dollar loan from a Texarkana trucking company owner that went on to gross over twenty million dollars and quietly invent the modern American Bigfoot mythos. And we trace the encounter reports that kept rolling in long after the cameras packed up, from highway sightings in the late 1970s, to coon hunters in the bottoms in 1997, to trail camera images in 2008, all the way into recent reports along the Sulphur River and Mercer Bayou.Drawing on nearly four decades of personal Sasquatch research and sixteen years in law enforcement, Brian unpacks the evidence with a careful eye on what the witnesses actually said, how investigators actually responded, and what holds up when you set the famous movie to one side and look at the record on its own terms. The episode closes with an honest weighing of the major theories, black bear misidentification, hoaxing, regional folklore, and the case for a possible undocumented hominid population in the connected swamps that run from southwest Arkansas down into Louisiana and east Texas. The witnesses in Fouke didn't ask for any of this. They saw what they saw. And the bottoms keep their secrets the way they always have.Have you experienced a Bigfoot sighting, Sasquatch encounter, Dogman experience, UFO sighting, or any unexplained cryptid or paranormal event deep in the woods? Newfoundland was a treacherous launch site, characterized by ice-packed coastlines, boggy ground, and constant rain. Teams had to ship their aircraft in pieces and assemble them in makeshift aerodromes while waiting for favorable winds. Many contemporaries viewed the mission as suicidal. Harry Hawker and Matt Grieve, flying a small Sopwith, grew impatient and launched into a cloud bank in May, disappearing from sight. When they failed to arrive in Ireland after 30 hours, the world presumed them dead, sparking global grief. Shortly after Hawker's departure, Fred Raynham's attempt ended in a "heart-rending" crash during takeoff. This left the field open for Alcock and Brown, who arrived late with their massive Vickers Vimy bomber. This fabric-and-wood machine successfully carried the duo through relentless North Atlantic clouds until they landed in Ireland, simply declaring they were from "America." (3/4)1923

Couch to Coached – AWARD-WINNING Running PodcastThis week's episode is a perfect blend of humour, hard-earned lessons, and muddy mile-after-mile storytelling. Rob, Ben and Emma kick things off with a playful debate about pop culture legends—yes, including the “Walrus of Love” Barry White—before diving headfirst into an unexpectedly heated conversation about mince pies. With a brand-new competition tied to their recent podcast awards announcement, the episode quickly picks up energy and momentum. From there, the conversation spans the trio's latest endurance adventures: triathlon prep, the realities of swimming lessons as an adult, and the ever-evolving goals that shape their training. As they reflect on personal progress, they also explore the challenges of balancing ambition with practicality—especially when it comes to investing in gear, managing FOMO, and staying smart about race choices. The episode then shifts to the mud-soaked chaos of a recent cross-country event and the unforgettable Escape from Meriden challenge. With wild weather, slippery trails, ditches, questionable food choices (Greggs, anyone?), and moments of pure exhaustion, Emma and Ben give a raw and entertaining account of what it takes to keep moving when conditions go sideways. Through laughter, setbacks, and even a “nappuccino,” they show how camaraderie and community make the toughest days memorable. As things wind down, the hosts discuss the importance of recovery, sports massage, mental resilience, and setting meaningful, realistic goals. From marathon and ultra plans to process-driven SMART goals, they dig into how to build a training journey that's sustainable, motivating, and tailored to real life. With plenty of friendly accountability and encouragement, the episode offers guidance for anyone looking to challenge themselves—without getting swept up in FOMO-fuelled decision-making.Whether you're here for running chat, triathlon talk, or simply the joy of hearing people fall into ditches and call it “good content,” this episode brings inspiration, entertainment, and a genuine sense of community.HighlightsBarry White confusion and mince pie debatesExciting award updates and podcast competitionTriathlon ambitions, swimming lessons, and building confidenceCross-country chaos and unpredictable weatherMuddy racing stories and real-time resilienceThe Escape from Meriden: support, setbacks, and surprising challengesThe impact of food choices (hello, Greggs) on performanceHitting milestones, celebrating wins, and dealing with shocksPost-race recovery, sports massage, and long-term healthSMART goals, race planning, and avoiding FOMOCommunity support and accountability in trainingRemember to follow us on Instagram, subscribe on YouTube, and watch us LIVE every Monday.Couch to Coached also has a Strava run club — just search for Couch to Coached on Strava. In the deep, mist-covered swamps of Louisiana and the shadowed bottomlands of Arkansas, something has been seen. Something big. Something wild. And for decades, the stories have haunted locals and fueled whispered warnings: Don't go out there after dark.In this episode, we travel first to the murky waters of Honey Island Swamp. Since the early 1960s, there have been sightings of a hulking, hair-covered creature said to stand over seven feet tall. It's known for its piercing yellow eyes, webbed footprints, and the foul stench it leaves behind. Some say it's an undiscovered primate. Others say it's something far older, something tied to the ancient legends of the land. Then we head north, across the state line, to the town of Fouke, Arkansas. In 1971, a quiet rural community was shaken by a terrifying encounter that left a family fleeing their home and sparked one of America's most enduring monster legends. The creature became known as the Fouke Monster—or the Boggy Creek Monster. Witnesses describe a towering figure with glowing red eyes and long arms that swing like a great ape.The stories are chilling, the evidence mysterious, and the legend refuses to die. Finally, we follow a trail that may tie these two legends together. A story that crosses swamps, rivers, and state lines. A story of men who went looking for the truth—and may have found it. Or maybe something found them. Are these two creatures part of the same mystery? Separate beasts haunting different landscapes? Or is it all just folklore—old stories to keep people from wandering too far into the dark? You decide. This week, Brett shares some time with friend and Florida's Environmental Curmudgeon-in-Chief, Estus Whitfield. Estus has a wealth of experience working for SIX Florida governors where he played an integral role in the creation of the Save Our Everglades, Save Our Rivers, and Preservation 2000 programs – just to name a few. In addition to his service to Florida, he also spent over thirty years serving his country in the Florida National Guard, U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Navy Reserves where he retired at the rank of Captain. Estus offers a unique perspective from his time serving so many governors and provides his thoughts on them; the dawn of widespread environmental restoration programs; some thoughts on current water quality issues related to septic tanks; and his somewhat pessimistic view of the future of the environment in Florida. Agree or disagree - Estus is never shy about his thoughts, pulls few punches, and is always generous with his time. We hope you enjoy the conversation. In Arkansas folklore, the Fouke Monster, also known as the Boggy Creek Monster and the Swamp Stalker, is purported to be an ape-like creature, similar to descriptions of Bigfoot, that was allegedly sighted in the rural town of Fouke, Arkansas during the early 1970s. The creature was alleged to have attacked a local family. It has since become a part of Arkansas folklore. It has also influenced local culture in Fouke, with some businesses capitalizing on the local lore. Stories of the creature influenced the 1972 docudrama horror film The Legend of Boggy Creek, which became the 11th highest-grossing film of 1972 and is today considered to be a cult classic.Get 20% off + free shipping with the code FUZZ20 at manscaped.com.
