This week, I got to talk with Saumya Dave about her new thriller The Guilt Pill! She shares how she found the inspiration for the book, how her work as a psychiatrist informed the book, and how she started the book while pregnant with her first child, and finished it while she was pregnant with her second! The Guilt Pill SynopsisWhat if women could get rid of their guilt?Maya Patel has it all—her own start-up, a sexy, doting husband, influencer status, and now, a new baby. Or does she? Because behind closed doors, Maya's drowning. Her newborn's taking a toll on her marriage, her best friend won't return her calls, and her company's hanging on by a thread. The worst part? It's all her fault. If she could just be a better boss, mother, wife, daughter, friend… Maybe she wouldn't feel so guilty all the time.Enter: #Girlboss Liz Anderson, who introduces her to the "guilt pill," an experimental supplement that erases female guilt. At first, it's the perfect antidote to Maya's self-blame and imposter syndrome, and she finally becomes the unapologetic woman she's always wanted to be. But there's a catch: for Maya to truly "have it all," she needs to be ready to risk it all. And as Maya falls deeper and deeper down the pill's guilt-free rabbit hole, her growing ruthlessness could threaten everything she's built for herself—and the family she's worked so hard to protect.Electric, taut, and sharply observed, The Guilt Pill is a feminist exploration of motherhood, race, ambition, and how the world treats women who dare to go after everything they want. Just as with Hollywood, the fiction landscape is changing rapidly! Just this year, we had a series of books by South Asian authors hit the literary landscape and make waves throughout the world. In this episode, Shabnum sits down with Alka Joshi, author of "The Henna Artist," and Saumya Dave, author of "Well Behaved Indian Women." Both of these pieces of work came out in 2020, are works of fiction that feature almost all South Asian characters and families, and explore the role of the South Asian woman and all that is expected of her. This is true in Joshi's "The Henna Artist," a historical fiction book set in 1950s India, and Dave's "Well Behaved Indian Women," set in modern day America. It's striking how much similarity there is in what the characters face despite the different settings of each book. Alka and Saumya both discuss the inspirations for their work as well as what is causing the widening of the publishing market that we are seeing today, allowing for more South Asian authors to tell stories from their perspective, and to talk about history from a perspective that is not just European. As part of December's celebration of South Asian authors, I chat with Sabreet about her upcoming memoir, Generation Zero, as well as what representation means in the South Asian community, the writing process, and the model minority myth. We also talk about Well-Behaved Women by Saumya Dave, a multigenerational work of literary fiction that unpacks the lives and narratives of three women in an Indian family. It's relatable, full of heart, and made for a brilliant conversation. Check it out! Sabreet's book, Generation Zero: Reclaiming My Parents' American Dream, is out December 8! Look for it wherever you buy books. https://www.sabreetkangrajeev.com/ Follow Sabreet on instagram @sabreetkangrajeev Follow Your Favorite Book on instagram and twitter @yfbpodcast
well-behaved indian women, a debut novel by Saumya Dave, is a fictional tale of mother-daughter relationships across three generations. It is a one of a kind story that beautifully portrays the complexities and intricacies of womanhood and motherhood in the Indian culture. Since its release in July 2020, the book has been flying off the shelves and has had remarkable reviews. We meet with Saumya for some chai and learn more about her journey as an author in creating this contemporary piece of art. Saumya talks about how each of the main characters came to life through her writing process and how some parts of the characters that she explored in her book may have come from her own personal experiences.
