"The history of drinking spices is older than the history of drinking tea, which is more recent in India. Drinking spices in hot water and in milk comes from the Ayurveda. As to when the marriage of these two happened, that's lost in history somewhere. In the West, people's palates are getting more accustomed to spices so there are more chai spice brands coming about and a lot of the blends are getting richer in spice. About the recipes, I really wanted to come up with ones that were simple to make, simple to bake. The idea was to put spices in everything. When you spice up cakes, they taste amazing to then why not put in the whole concoction of the tea? Masala chai cake makes so much sense," says Mira Manek, author, The Book of Chai that includes a history of chai drinking in India, stories of her own family's migrations from Gujarat to East Africa and the UK, and a range of recipes of regular Indian teatime favourites like chilli cheese toast and bhajias as well as fusion treats like Parle G cheesecake, chai fudge, and of course, Masala chai cake.

Amul Currently ranked as the eighth largest dairy organisation in the world, Amul was founded in 1946 as part of a cooperative movement against Polson Dairy and grew under the chairmanship of Verghese Kurien. What would become “the taste of India”, was at its heart a movement to ensure fair earnings for the country's farmers. The brand found its mascot in the round-eyed utterly butterly Amul girl in a polka-dot dress. That was back in the '60s. The Amul girl has since kept a close eye on the goings-on in the country, recording them day after day with her puns, witty takes and compassion, depending on what emotion the event calls for. From the Pokhran nuclear tests of 1998 to when India lifted the cricket World Cup in 2011 to Wordle, through her, Amul has kept a finger on the country's pulse. Parle-G Amul milk has given you chai. But what is tea without Parle-G? The perfect accompaniment to chai in the middle of a busy work day, Parle-G was founded on swadeshi ideals in 1929 by Mohanlal Chauhan. It was an answer to expensive British biscuits — perhaps with a touch of French. As the '80s approached, competitors started to launch their own glucose biscuits. Parle-Gluco could see its market share thinning as people started getting confused by similar brand names. Many also just wanted glucose biscuits — brand no bar. So, in 1982 the brand reinvented itself as Parle-G. A powerhouse of energy, a huge section of society started depending on Parle-G, not just for fulfilling nutritional needs but also for its budget-friendly prices — the prices remain so. Along with milk, Parle-G came to be considered staple baby food. The signature white-and-yellow striped biscuit packet, with the chubby Parle baby girl, is probably the most recognisable brand in the country, and according to Nielsen, continues to be the world's best-selling biscuit. Maruti800 Another product that is inseparable from the India story is the Maruti 800. The joint venture between Maruti Udyog and Japan's Suzuki Motors started with this small, box-like hatchback that was affordable and offered great mileage. It launched in 1983 at a price tag of 47,500 rupees. Tailor made for tribulations on the average Indian road and the aspirations of the average Indian family, the small car proved a revolution in the Indian auto sector, eventually replacing the legendary Ambassador and much-loved Fiat Padmini as the car of the first choice. Even as the economy opened up in 1991, the 800 remained a favourite, and Maruti Suzuki continued its hold over the auto market with the largest share, with its successive offerings. Air India If Maruti Suzuki is the king of Indian roads, Air India is the Maharajah of the Skies. The carrier is known for its royalty when it was born out of the J R D Tata-led group in 1932. But the brand struck a chord with the average Indian reader too. Back in the days, it had an aura about it and was one of the few organisations that put India on the global map. The carrier hit the skies roaring and found success for many decades thereafter. But then, turbulence hit. Air India was nationalised and it had seen fair share of losses. Amid all of this, Air India shouldered some of the biggest Indian evacuations during the Gulf war and most recently in a pandemic. Now back with the Tatas, the maharajah hopes to revive its glory days. Bollywood Moving on from Maharajah to the brand of brands which gave us the “Badshah” of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan. How does one even begin to describe a brand like Bollywood: India's biggest entertainer; society's mirror; the most influential influencer; a world of storytellers and dream merchants; one of the country's most popular exports....Where does one start from? From Dadasaheb Phalke or Dadasaheb Torne? From Satyajit Ray or Bimal Roy? Or Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Bhattacharya or Shyam Benegal? Which stars does one focus on? The gorgeous Madhubala? The institutions called Prithviraj K

How is 'shrinkflation' helping FMCG companies tide over rising input costs?

Business Standard Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 18, 2022 7:44

Just as consumers are trying to manage their budgets in the current high inflationary environment, FMCG companies too are resorting to both time-tested and innovative ways to mitigate unprecedented input cost rise.  Companies are going for a mix of both direct price hikes and grammage cuts. Raw materials like edible oils, wheat, crude oil derivatives, laminates and corrugated boxes that go into making biscuits, soaps, cosmetics and detergents have been on an upswing since the second half of FY21, with geopolitical factors aggravating the inflation.  The wholesale food price index inched up to 8.88% in April from 8.71% in March. And Hindustan Unilever's CFO Ritesh Tiwari recently said that reducing the volume in certain price-point packs is “the only way for us to take price increases”. The 10 rupee bar of the company's Vim soap weighs 135 grams now, compared with 155 grams about three months ago, Bloomberg reported. At the same price point, a pack of the crunchy aaloo bhujia made by Haldiram's is 42 grams now, down from 55 grams. Making the products smaller while still maintaining the same price is termed ‘shrinkflation'. Akshay D-Souza of retail intelligence platform Bizom also says that when a company is very heavily exposed in terms of revenue to certain price points, tinkering with them is a competitive risk that could result in loss of market share. He said that for many in India, a tea and a small biscuit pack double up as their meal.  Dabur India CEO Mohit Malhotra has called Rs 1, 5 and 10 as “sacred price points” whereas HUL's Ritesh Tiwari referred to these as “magic price points”. Taking a look at how much Low Unit Packs contribute to the sales of some of the top FMCG companies will give a sense of how important these price points are for them in India. HUL gets almost 30% of its business from Rs 1, 5 and 10 packs, for Brittania this moves up to 50-55% and Parle Products, which makes Parle-G and Hide and Seek biscuits, derives a massive 70% of its revenue and volumes from 10 rupee packs and below. Speaking to Business Standard, Krishnarao Buddha, Sr Category Head - Marketing, Parle Products said theirfirst step during high inflation is to try and absorb the costs. Price points are extremely critical in biscuits and snacks industry, he says adding that for Rs 10 packs and below, companies always go for weight reduction. Consumers are fine with price increases for packs beyond Rs 20, he says. In the past 12-14 months, Parle hiked prices by 7 to 8% by weight cuts and direct hikes. "I believe that in 2025 Rs 10 will the new Rs 5," he says.   Brittania Industries MD Varun Berry recently said that low unit price points in a country like India are impossible to vacate given it has a lot of bottom of the pyramid consumers. It is for this reason that companies go to lengths to protect lower price points, even at the cost of profitability.  According to Varun Berry, Managing Director, Britannia Industries, the compay is not in any position to vacate Rs 5 segment at this point. He says contributions from Rs 2 and Rs 3 packs has migrated to Rs 5 and above. In the words of Berry, India has a lot of bottom of the pyramid consumers. "Time will tell when to press the pedal on Rs 10 and move on from Rs 5," he says. Another strategy that has started to come up is ‘bridge packs'. Giving an example, HUL said it introduced a new size between its Rs 10 and Rs 35 Lifebuoy soap which gives better value for consumers while ensuring affordability and at the same time gives scale to the manufacturer. HUL is trying to introduce bridge packs across all categories impacted by commodity prices. Although companies incorporate a range of tactics to overcome inflationary pressures, they have no option but to go for grammage cuts for smaller packs so they do not lose out on market share in a competitive segment where significant volumes are dependent on price-sensitive consumers.

20 year old Bangalore based producer Nathan Menon’s collaboration with Tom Day resulted in what is possibly the single most beautiful track released in 2013. Picked by Border Movement and the #1 artist to watch out for in 2014 completely off the back of 'Love Is Rare, "Menon displayed tremendous vocal ability: a falsetto unironically comparable to Justin Vernon or Jai Paul." Apart from the EP he made with Tom Day, Menon’s output has almost been exclusively via sporadic uploads on SoundCloud. A few mixes, collaborations and tracks that are in effect enough to have us expecting something pretty interesting from this young kid. We've spoken to him in depth and know that there's some special collaborations on the way, as well as some new production that he's hopefully going to be ready to debut by the end of the year. Until now, we've managed to source a tasty little precursor and insight into the sonic mindset of Monsoonsiren. Like Monsoonsiren himself, the mix is difficult to define, only heightened by his decision to include one of his own productions at the very end. In just 35 minutes, Menon moves through a lot of music, maintaining a fairly straight cut vibe. And despite all of the music's familiar elements, there's still no one else out there who sounds quite like him, when taking into consideration his choice of samples and tracklist. “So, here’s my bipolar mixtape. Put on some headphones and eat some Parle-G." - Monsoonsiren For a tracklist and further info, head over here: http://www.thewildcity.com/EN/music.xhtml/article/5766-wild-city-078-monsoonsiren
