"The history of drinking spices is older than the history of drinking tea, which is more recent in India. Drinking spices in hot water and in milk comes from the Ayurveda. As to when the marriage of these two happened, that's lost in history somewhere. In the West, people's palates are getting more accustomed to spices so there are more chai spice brands coming about and a lot of the blends are getting richer in spice. About the recipes, I really wanted to come up with ones that were simple to make, simple to bake. The idea was to put spices in everything. When you spice up cakes, they taste amazing to then why not put in the whole concoction of the tea? Masala chai cake makes so much sense," says Mira Manek, author, The Book of Chai that includes a history of chai drinking in India, stories of her own family's migrations from Gujarat to East Africa and the UK, and a range of recipes of regular Indian teatime favourites like chilli cheese toast and bhajias as well as fusion treats like Parle G cheesecake, chai fudge, and of course, Masala chai cake.

Carol Roberts, head of Troy Public Library's Young People's Services, joins us for her monthly recommendations of some new books for kids and young adults. Her four January selections cover fiction and non-fiction: “The Scarlet Veil” (Shelby Mahurin, 2023), a YA fantasy novel, tells the tale of a female hunter/warrior who “must vanquish a rising new evil. . . hiding behind a handsome face.” “All These Sunken Souls: A Black Horror Anthology” (ed. Circe Moskowitz, 2024) gathers stories from ten Black authors, a nice accompaniment for watching the Jordan Peele movie “Get Out.” Turning to non-fiction, “Why Do Elephants Have Big Ears?: Questions and Surprising Answers About Animals” (Steve Jenkins and Robin Page, 2023) offers interesting facts, odd trivia, and beautiful artwork about numerous animals. And the picture book “Masala Chai, Fast and Slow” (Rajani LaRocca, ill. Neha Rawat) tells the story of a man who makes chai tea, and his grandson who takes over the work when his grandfather sprains his ankle. Carol notes that the book inspired her to buy chai tea, though she did not try making it with the recipe provided. For more details, visit www.thetroylibrary.org. Zarna Garg immigrated to the United States from India alone, at 16, without a penny to her name. Fast-forward to 2018: She's a stay-at-home mom with three kids and bored out of her mind. At her children's insistence, Zarna got on stage at an open-mic night. Five years later? She has her own comedy special on Amazon, “Zarna Garg: One in a Billion!” Zarna loves to top many of her meals with a big ol' pile of raw onions, but laments that Americans are sensitive to onion breath. I chat with a cognitive scientist who researched whether smell preference is cultural, personal taste or universally disliked among humans because of its chemical compounds. And we'll learn the fairly modern history of masala chai with Indian-American food writer Leena Trivedi-Granier (click for her recipe)– just don't call it chai tea! We'll tell you why.  This month, we discuss adventure stories, one of the prompts on the Books and Bites Bingo Reading Challenge. Choose your own adventure, whether it's with a group of teens on a road trip, on top of Mount Everest, or on a pirate ship! Jacqueline's PickJacqueline enjoyed Five Survive by New York Times bestselling author Holly Jackson. Red Kenny is on a road trip for spring break with five friends. When their RV breaks down in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, they soon realize this is no accident. They have been trapped by someone out there in the dark, someone who clearly wants one of them dead. With eight hours until dawn, the six friends must escape, or figure out which of them is the target.Pairing: No-Bake Peanut Butter Protein Cookies, a yummy road-trip treat.Michael's PickMichael took a trip to Mount Everest with Jon Krakauer's nonfiction book, Into Thin Air. Working for Outside magazine, Krakauer was given the opportunity to ascend Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, during the 1996 climbing season on Rob Hall's team, Hall being one of the most experienced and respected climbers and guides in the world. They were about to witness one of the deadliest days in the mountain's history. A storm rolled in on summit day that ultimately left eight people dead. This is Krakauer's personal account of that expedition, relying on interviews with others to corroborate his experiences and provide perspective.Pairing: A hot cup of Masala Chai.Carrie's PickCarrie went on an adventure with The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee, a YA novel that takes place in the 18th century. Felicity Montague wants to become a doctor, but the English and Scottish hospital boards she appeals to for apprenticeship turn her down because of her gender. When she learns that one of her medical idols is about to marry her childhood best friend and may need an assistant, she sets out for Germany to plead her case. What follows is a quest with two other young women involving pirates, a voyage to Algeria, and (spoiler alert!) sea monsters.Pairing: Shakshouka, an Algerian dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapeno, onion, and spices. Find the recipe in the library database AtoZ World Food.

A quality brew is a timeless pleasure. It's not just a drink; it's an art, it's an experience, a habit that can unfold so many stories. ‘Let's have tea together' has been a synonym for ‘let's start something beautiful' for generations of Indians. For our parents it was about exploring marriage prospects, which is now replaced by exploring start-up ideas. The loves of our life might have changed over time but the beginning has always remained the same: chai ho jaye! The tea fever is not just limited to India; in many countries, it's given double the weightage, literally, the item in question being chai tea latte. Most people would argue the benefits of green tea against chai, the former being healthy and a weight-loss fix and chai being the less healthy version. Did you know that both green and black tea come from the same origin: leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis? The difference between the two is simple; black tea is fermented but green tea is not. If the above statement has shocked you – be prepared to get even more stunned at the revelations about this magic concoction that is the lifeline of India in this podcast. So should the tea be discarded for health benefits or are we going to continue enjoying our tea ? This is just a small glimpse into the benefits of this super desi drink ! Listen to the podcast to find out the recipe !! Find out in this podcast how the MASALA CHAI should be your go-to drink for ALL seasons !!   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

His full performance at NPR Music's Tiny Desk Concert can be watched here (bless visual media!), and his music can be purchased on his Bandcamp here. We discussed the inner workings of music streaming platforms to the best of public knowledge about them, and why in a gig-less world of quarantine, social distancing and livestreaming, the meagre amount musicians are able to make from their music itself has to increase and why Spotify CEO Daniel Ek's comments to MusicAlly in interview this week are especially tone deaf and unrealistic. If you are new to the hospitality industry or even an old-timer, you should listen to the next two episodes of Lush Life. The story that unfolds over these two episodes could be your story. Our guest, Tim Etherington-Judge has literally been through it all and come out the other side with all the tools necessary to help his fellow colleagues in the hospitality industry. Thank goodness he had the bravery to tell his story and then to establish Healthy Hospo which provides information, advice, and support on mental & physical health for all hospitality professionals. It’s best to let Tim tell you his tale, starting at the very beginning. Our Cocktail of the Week is the Chill Your Chai: Ingredients: 1L Vodka 1L Water 20g Golden Tip Assam Tea 1.5g Masala Chai Brew 1L Water with the Golden Tip Assam Tea and Masala Chai for 10 minutes. Add vodka and leave to cool. To Clarify 1L Masala Chai Mix 300ml Full Cream Milk 8g 15% Citric Acid Heat the milk in a pain until it’s close to boiling. Remove from heat and add to your Masala Chai Mix. Allow to stand for 30 minutes. Add the Citric Acid and gently stir to begin the curdling process. Leave to stand and gently stir every 10 minutes for 1 hour. Leave over night. Next day strain the mix through muslin cloth and 2 coffee filters. DO NOT try and push the mix through the filters as you will ruin the process. To serve Pour 150ml of your Masala Chai Mix over ice and strain into a chilled chai cutting glass. Garnish with a local flower. You’ll find this recipe and all the cocktails of the week on ALushLifeManual.com, where you’ll also find all the ingredients in our shop. Until next time… bottom’s up!

Getting Simple

Saurabh Mhatre talks about the simplicity behind deployable systems, the chaos of taking pictures, mindful photography, material science, social media, productivity tools, and more. Saurabh grew up and studied architecture in Mumbai. He holds a Master in Design Studies with a focus on technology from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he currently explores how flat deployable mechanisms can morph into three-dimensional shapes with minimal actuation, to enable ephemeral uses of mundane items and facilitate their storage and shipment, as part of his research at the Material Processes and Systems (MaP+S) Group. He enjoys working with people from different disciplines, ranging from biological engineering to material science, and works across multiple material scales, from the nano-scale of medical devices to large form-factor of deployable shelters. Saurabh also shares with us his love for photography, how he interacts with social media, and what productivity tools help him keep track of his work. You can find Saurabh on Facebook, his photos at @sm8928 on Instagram, and his most recent work at saurabhmhatre.com. Episode notes The Material Processes and Systems (MaP+S) Group, led by Professor Martin Bechthold, is a research unit that promotes the understanding, development and deployment of innovative technologies for buildings. [2:00] The Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) is the engineering school within Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering and applied sciences. [2:35] The Wyss (pronounced /viːs/ "veese") Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering is a cross-disciplinary research institute at Harvard University which focuses on developing new bioinspired materials and devices for applications in healthcare, manufacturing, robotics, energy, and sustainable architecture. Saurabh's current research on deployable mechanisms at different scales, flat objects that can morph into three-dimensional shapes with minimal actuation. [06:10] What other projects would you like to work on if you had the time? [12:45] Are there new materials or mechanisms (widely known in research labs in Cambridge) that will hit the market in the next years? [13:23] Masala Chai is Saurabh's morning to-go drink. [17:08] Differences between living in Mumbai and living in Cambridge. [18:45] "The way photography for me started." [21:35] Adobe Lightroom is a photography editing desktop app part of Saurabh's editing workflow. [22:45] Evernote is a note-taking app. [31:45] Toggl is a time-tracking tool. [33:08] Digital toolbox. Site: http://www.audiobooks.com/podcast  | Email: podcast@audiobooks.com Welcome back to the Audiobooks.com Podcast! Halloween has passed, November is upon us and we can finally start thinking about Thanksgiving here in the United States. No more being shy about ordering pumpkin spice lattes, it's now a shameless request. There are a lot of fantastic autumn beverages that often get overlooked, though, like Masala Chai and apple cider. If you have a favorite autumn beverage that gets overlooked, write us and tell us what it is! We have a very special treat for you this week as we invited entertainer and entrepreneur Tucker Max to join us. The truth is, every week is a special week, every guest is a special guest, but we are excited to share this interview with you because of the unique change Tucker has brought to the world of books and audiobooks. Google and Wikipedia will tell you about the Old Tucker Max, the one without a wife and a son, the one who wrote I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell, and the one who basically helped form the genre fratire. What they don't spend a lot of time describing is the New Tucker Max, the one who we got to chat with in this interview and the one who is re-inventing what it means to author books. As much as we celebrate audiobooks on the appropriately titled Audiobooks.com Podcast, we also celebrate the opportunity to consume knowledge from those who have the expertise and experience to provide it. Unfortunately, by the nature of that position in life, a book containing that knowledge often ends up being compiled in a memoir. The relevance of its content, upon release, is already losing its criticality and is thus treated by the media and public as more of a biographical work. Book in a Box is changing everything. Tucker Max and his business partners have developed a method which enables a person with expertise to get relevant knowledge out to its target audience while it is still critical. As audiobook lovers, we can appreciate the time it takes to either read or listen to a book, which says nothing about the time it took an author to write it. The greatest aspect to Book in a Box is that it does not take a person with this critical knowledge more than 12-16 hours over the phone! Time, as a caveat to producing relevant content, is almost negligible. This process has amazing potential and we are excited to see the products that result from it. Check out the links below for more information on this enterprise, as well as the books that Tucker Max has written! Then, send him a thank-you for taking the time to chat with us. Show us some love!
