On this encore special Holy Thursday episode of Catholic Answers Live, Cy Kellett sits down with apologist Joe Heschmeyer to explore the profound meaning of the Last Supper. Why did Jesus institute the Eucharist and the priesthood on this night? How does the Gospel of John's account—focused on the washing of the feet—fit with the synoptic Gospels' focus on the bread and wine? Joe connects the dots between the Passover sacrifice, Christ's role as the Paschal Lamb, and the liturgical richness of the early Church. You'll also learn why Holy Thursday marks the beginning of the Church's most sacred three-day liturgy—and how Catholics today are called to enter into this mystery. Revelation 11 20 November 2024 Chapter 7 Lawrence R. Farley, The Apocalypse of St. John: A Revelation of Love and Power, The Orthodox Bible Study Companion (Chesterton, IN: Ancient Faith Publishing, 2011). Patrick Henry Reardon, Revelation: A Liturgical Prophecy (Yonkers, NY: St. Vladimir's Seminary Press, 2018), 53. Fr. Patrick Reardon.  The final preservation of God's elect was foreshadowed in their deliverance at the time of the fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. This sealing with the mark of the true Paschal Lamb fulfilled the promise contained in that earlier marking of Israel with the sacrificial blood of its type (Ex 12:21–23). Both Ezekiel and Exodus are important for the understanding of this seal. Ezekiel's reference was to the fall of Jerusalem in 587 BC, of which everyone was aware who saw the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70. The passage in Exodus 12 had to do with the last of the ten plagues visited upon Egypt, the slaying of the firstborn sons. This sealing in Revelation, then, involves a new Exodus, in which God's people will be delivered, not left to share in the sin of the earthly Jerusalem.   Fr. Lawrence Farley:  What is this seal? The image is drawn from Ezekiel 9. In this passage, angels were to slay all in Jerusalem that rebelled idolatrously against Yahweh. But before they began their dreadful task, one angel went through the city and, at the divine command, put “a mark” (in Hebrew a tau) on all who were faithful (Ezek. 9:4). To be thus marked on the forehead is to enjoy the protection of God and an immunity from coming judgment…. This time of great tribulation seems to last throughout the age, for in Matthew 24:29 the Second Coming is said to occur “immediately after the tribulation of those days.” The parallel version of this verse in Luke 21:24 seems to confirm this, for it describes what Matthew refers to as “great tribulation” as a time of “great distress upon the land … [the people] will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive into all nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled”—that is, until the end of the age. Even the original prophecy of Daniel 12 states that the “time of tribulation” will be followed by the resurrection of the dead, when “many of those who sleep in the dust will awake” (Dan. 12:2). It would seem then that in Matthew 24 the “great tribulation” is the age-long time of suffering for Israel that began with the destruction of the Temple in AD 70… This understanding of “the great tribulation” (7:14) as the suffering of the Church throughout the age explains too the difference in the two crowds mentioned in this chapter. In 7:1–8, John receives a vision of the Church on earth, sealed and protected by God in preparation for their entering the final time of conflict. It is the Church of the final days. In 7:9–17, however, John sees a vaster multitude. This crowd comprises, not just the Church of the final days, but the Church gathered throughout all the centuries, coming from “the great tribulation,” the age-long struggle with the world. Unlike the former crowd, this multitude is vast beyond counting, stretching into the horizons of heaven. It is the Church glorified at last, fresh from its victorious struggle, an overwhelming testimony to the power of God.

July 23, 2024 Today's Reading: Ephesians 2:11-22Daily Lectionary: 1 Samuel 6:19-7:17; Acts 19:23-21:14; Acts 19:1-22So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. (Ephesians 2:19-21)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. This is going to be a dangerous rhetorical question…Have you ever felt like you didn't fit in? Just so that question doesn't hang out there in the void, I'll answer: YES! YES! A thousand times, yes! There were times when I tried doing the popular things, and sometimes it worked, other times it didn't. There were times when I didn't do the popular thing, opting for what I knew to be the right thing, and that didn't make many friends, either. In our reading today, we're reminded of a distinction that existed in the first century that we don't really experience today: Jewish vs. Gentile Christians. There are, unfortunately, divisions among Christians today, but it's hard to imagine the kind of animosity that existed among those who had the promises, the covenant, the lineage, the Scripture—you get the idea. From their perspective, these Gentiles had always been unclean, even idolaters and enemies of God. And now they were just going to receive the same salvation as God's people of old?! Without any kind of sacrifice?! Without any obedience to the law of Moses and the traditions of the elders?! But that's the beauty of Jesus' perfect, innocent blood. It brings people into the family of God. It tears down the division lines between those of Abraham and those of every other family on earth (remember that they would be blessed in Abraham's offspring, too! Genesis 12:3, 28:14). Paul continues by saying that not only are Gentiles brought into the family of God through the blood of Christ, but God is using all believers to build Himself a house, a Temple, in which His glory dwells, established on the preaching of the apostles, with Christ Himself as the cornerstone, and you and me and all Christians fitting perfectly into the places that God has intended for us from before the foundation of the world! With a place like that, who could ever hope to fit into this world that's passing away?! In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Paschal Lamb, by God appointed, All our sins on Thee were laid; By almighty love anointed, Thou hast full atonement made. All Thy people are forgiven Through the virtue of Thy blood; Opened is the gate of heaven, Reconciled are we with God. Amen. (LSB 531:2)-Rev. After many years away from the sacrament, my mother's confession brought an unexpected joy to this Holy Saturday, and it's with that spirit of renewal that I invite you to join me in today's reflection. As we stand on the threshold of Easter, the penultimate meditations from Bishop Jacques Bossuet's "Meditations for Lent" challenge us to examine the ephemeral nature of our existence and the significance of our lives within the vast expanse of time. We ponder the genuinely lived moments versus those lost to the mundanities of daily life and consider the relative weight of our temporal achievements against an eternal backdrop. This introspection is not just a solitary journey; I ask for your prayers for my mother and all those rediscovering their faith during this sacred time.As dusk settles, our hearts and minds turn to the Easter Vigil, the pinnacle of our Lenten journey, where the scriptural sagas unfurl the redemptive arc of our salvation history and Christ's enduring presence within it. We draw profound parallels between Moses, the liberator of the Israelites, and Jesus Christ, the ultimate sacrifice of the Paschal Lamb, exploring the deep-rooted connections that prefigure the Savior's coming. This episode is an invitation to embrace spiritual readiness and to eagerly anticipate the sacred feast that awaits us. As we prepare to conclude our Lenten fast and look forward to the final reflection on Easter Sunday, I share my heartfelt gratitude for your companionship throughout these meditations and wish you a blessed Holy Saturday and a joyous entry into Easter.Support the show********************************************************https://www.avoidingbabylon.comLocals Community: https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comRSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rssSpiritusTV: https://spiritustv.com/@avoidingbabylonOdysee: https://odysee.com/@AvoidingBabylon

“This day shall be a memorial feast for you, which all your generations shall celebrate with pilgrimage to the LORD, as a perpetual institution.” Exodus 12:11The holy Triduum begins. Today we fulfill this Old Testament passage, revealing that the Passover would become “a perpetual institution.” This passage concludes our First Reading instruction from the LORD given to Moses and Aaron on how to prepare for the Israelites' liberation from Egypt. Plague after plague had been inflicted upon the Egyptians, and none of them resulted in the Israelites being set free. Therefore, the LORD instructed the Israelites to celebrate the first Passover by killing a year-old lamb, sprinkling its blood on their doorposts, and feasting on the flesh in preparation for the journey to the Promised Land. Today, we continue this Passover celebration as we share in the Sacrifice of the Lamb of God, Whose Blood has been shed, Whose flesh we consume, and Who leads us through the desert of life to the new and eternal Promised Land of Heaven.Just as the first Passover was a prefiguration of the Sacrifice of the Lamb of God, so also the plagues that led up to the Passover present us with much meaning. At first, all the water in Egypt turned to blood. Then frogs, gnats, flies and pestilence covered the land. Boils covered the skin of humans and animals. Hail rained down, locusts covered the land, and finally darkness covered the land for three days. None of these plagues was ultimately successful in convincing Pharaoh to let God's people go; therefore, the final plague to be inflicted was the death of the firstborn. It was the blood of the paschal lamb, sprinkled on the doorposts of the Israelites' houses that signaled to the angels to pass over their homes. The plagues inflicted on Pharaoh and the Egyptians were severe. But because of their obstinacy, God continued until they changed. Recall, also, that even after the Israelites were set free, Pharaoh changed his mind and pursued them into the Red Sea where his army perished.Though these prefiguring events might not be that pleasant to consider, they must be reflected upon. We must see in them God's tireless and relentless efforts to set us free from sin. The obstinacy and oppression of Pharaoh are clear signs of the oppressive evil within our world today, and within our own souls. When we seek to embrace the freedom to which we are called, we will be met with much temptation and oppression from the evil one, as well as from our own fallen human nature. But if we trust in God, as Moses did, then we will be given all we need to begin the journey to freedom. Most specifically, the Flesh and Blood of the Son of Man is our Paschal Lamb. The Eucharist, which was instituted on Holy Thursday, protects us from the final death. Consuming the Body of Christ also strengthens us for our spiritual journeys. Without it, we have no protection from the evil one and lack the strength we need to be faithful on our journey.Reflect, today, upon God's incredible commitment to set you free. He came to earth, took on human form, offered His life in sacrifice, and now feeds you with His sacred flesh. Without the Eucharist as your spiritual food and His Sacred Blood covering you, you will not survive. We all need the Eucharist. We need the Bread of Heaven. We need the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Savior of the World. God went to the greatest length to save you. Accept His Gift that we especially commemorate and participate in today. My Sacrificial Lamb, You came to earth to set us free from the oppression of the evil one and from the disorders of our fallen human nature. Please feed me today and always with Your Sacred Body and Precious Blood. By the strength of this Food from Heaven, continue to lead me to the Promised Land of Heaven. Jesus, I trust in You. Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Community Gerak, Labuan Bajo, Diocese of Ruteng, Indonesia. 1 John 3: 7-10; Rs psalm 98: 1.7-8.9; John 1: 35-42 BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD Our meditation today has the theme: Behold the Lamb of God. There are various types of title to the Lord Jesus that make us feel close and want to be always with Him. The nuns regarded Jesus as their respective life spouse. A married couple refers to Jesus as the main reference for their relationship. Young people who are dating make Jesus a light and wisdom for their growing love relationships. Today we have the story from the Gospels about the title of Jesus that captivated the hearts of His first disciples. John the Baptist introduced Jesus by the name: Lamb of God. The first disciples immediately made up their hearts , then they chose to leave everything to follow Jesus. As the Lamb of God, the Lord also presented big and serious challenge to the disciples that they should become the truly chosen people. Jesus is the lamb of God because He himself at very proper moment sacrificed himself to be the ransom for us sinful human beings. He himself had explained so clearly through His teachings that he would be killed, then His blood is indeed for the salvation of all humanity. The Eucharistic banquet which is the source and culmination of the Christian life is the best meal for our being Christians. So it makes sense to us, that Jesus Himself makes the symbol of the lamb which is very tasteful as our food of life. If Jesus himself claims to be the lamb of God, then confirmed by John the Baptist who explained to the audience about the true identity of Jesus, can it be also the statement of our identity: You and I are also the lambs of God? There's no way for us to become the chicks, ducks or goats. Because Jesus asked us to follow Him and take up the cross as He did; moreover He teaches us His own prayer "Our Father", so it is natural and very appropriate for us to follow Him to become lambs of God too. The principle of life of the lambs of God who follow the example of Jesus Christ is the same as the Paschal Lamb of Jesus Christ Himself. The principle is a life dedicated to God and to others. This is the principle of the Eucharist. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, God's body is slaughtered or broken to become our food. Likewise we, after becoming persons who are nourished by the Eucharist, our real life will be slaughtered or broken to bring goodness and salvation to our neighbors. Let's pray. In the name of the Father ... Jesus, You have become human so that we can become children of the Father, because we partake in Your Sonship. Bless us always Jesus. Hail Mary ... In the name of the Father ... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/media-la-porta/message

In this episode I share some of the Old Testament “types” or “prefigurations” related to the Holy Eucharist, like the Paschal Lamb, the Manna in the desert, and the Ark of the Covenant. We also look at the miracles of Cana and the Multiplication of the loaves, as well as the words of Christ with which He instituted the Most Blessed Sacrament during the Last Supper. - John Paul II's Apostolic Letter “Dominicae Cenae”: https://adoremus.org/2007/12/dominicae-cenae/ - More info on this can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church #1373-1390 - Biblical quotations: Genesis 28:10 (Jacob's Ladder); Exodus 12 (the Paschal Lamb); Exodus 16 (the Manna in the dessert); Exodus 37 (The ark of the Covenant); John 2:1 (Wedding at Cana); John 6 (multiplication of the bread); Jn 6:51 (The Promise to give His body to eat and blood to drink); 1 Corinthians 10:16-21 (St. Paul's teaching on the Eucharist). - Video with a general introduction to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWlSqh3YZ9Y - Fr. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” (Lk 22) "Do this inn remembrance of me," as a memorial of me. Thus Christ directed the apostles (and successors) to celebrate a new “memorial" that would replace the one celebrated in the Jewish Passover. This memorial rite has a special efficacy: it not only helps the community of believers to “remember" Christ's redeeming love, his words and gestures during the Last Supper, but also, as a sacrament of the New Law, makes the reality signified truly present: Christ himself, 'our Paschal Lamb' (1 Cor. 5:7), and his redeeming sacrifice: this would take place the next day on the cross. Fr. Eric Nicolai preached this meditation in preparation for the solemnity of Corpus Christi, in Ernescliff College, June 4, 2022. "Let us ask Him who is the Christ, who was immolated for us as our Paschal Lamb, to grant us to bring to worthy contemplation the solemnity of Paschal joy which we have entered upon, and through this to attain eternal joys." -Venerable Bede This reading of St. Bede's homily at the Paschal (Easter) Vigil illumines the mind and brings joy to the heart. St. Bede lived in the 7th and 8th centuries in Northumbria (Northern England) as a priest, monk, true scholar, and author of many books, most notably The Ecclesiastical History of the English People and my personal favorite, The Life of St. Cuthbert. Through the prayers of the Venerable Bede, may we all celebrate our Christ, our Risen Chirst, for all eternity. Amen. This homily is from Book II of Homilies on the Gospels - Lent to The Dedication of the Church by Bede the Venerable. Published by Cistercian Publications. Rev. Sean Kilgo, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lawrence, KS, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel for Sharathon 2022 to study Martin Luther's Easter hymn, “Christ Jesus Lay in Death's Strong Bands.” This marvelous Easter hymn helps us to rejoice that Christ is the Savior who has done what we could not do. Our sin left us powerless in the prison of death, but Jesus has come to conquer this greatest enemy of ours and strip it of its reign and power. The strife was real and strange, yet the outcome of Jesus' victory was never in doubt. As the fulfillment of the Passover Lamb, Jesus' blood marks us as His own people so that no enemy can harm us. In this Easter joy, we keep the festival of the Lord's resurrection and receive Him and all His gifts in the Holy Supper of His Body and Blood. Lutheran Service Book 458 1 Christ Jesus lay in death's strong bands For our offenses given; But now at God's right hand He stands And brings us life from heaven. Therefore let us joyful be And sing to God right thankfully Loud songs of alleluia! Alleluia! 2 No son of man could conquer death, Such ruin sin had wrought us. No innocence was found on earth, And therefore death had brought us Into bondage from of old And ever grew more strong and bold And held us as its captive. Alleluia! 3 Christ Jesus, God's own Son, came down, His people to deliver; Destroying sin, He took the crown From death's pale brow forever: Stripped of pow'r, no more it reigns; An empty form alone remains; Its sting is lost forever. Alleluia! 4 It was a strange and dreadful strife When life and death contended; The victory remained with life, The reign of death was ended. Holy Scripture plainly saith That death is swallowed up by death, Its sting is lost forever. Alleluia! 5 Here our true Paschal Lamb we see, Whom God so freely gave us; He died on the accursed tree-- So strong His love--to save us. See, His blood now marks our door; Faith points to it; death passes o'er, And Satan cannot harm us. Alleluia! 6 So let us keep the festival To which the Lord invites us; Christ is Himself the joy of all, The sun that warms and lights us. Now His grace to us imparts Eternal sunshine to our hearts; The night of sin is ended. Alleluia! 7 Then let us feast this Easter Day On Christ, the bread of heaven; The Word of grace has purged away The old and evil leaven. Christ alone our souls will feed; He is our meat and drink indeed; Faith lives upon no other! Alleluia! hymnary.org/hymn/LSB2006/458

To support the ministry and get access to exclusive content, go to: http://patreon.com/logicalbiblestudy Mark 10: 35-45 - 'The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for many.' Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 536 (in 'The Baptism of Jesus') - The baptism of Jesus is on his part the acceptance and inauguration of his mission as God's suffering Servant. He allows himself to be numbered among sinners; he is already "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world". Already he is anticipating the "baptism" of his bloody death. Already he is coming to "fulfil all righteousness", that is, he is submitting himself entirely to his Father's will: out of love he consents to this baptism of death for the remission of our sins (abbreviated). - 1225 (in 'Christ's Baptism') - In his Passover Christ opened to all men the fountain of Baptism. He had already spoken of his Passion, which he was about to suffer in Jerusalem, as a "Baptism" with which he had to be baptized. The blood and water that flowed from the pierced side of the crucified Jesus are types of Baptism and the Eucharist, the sacraments of new life. From then on, it is possible "to be born of water and the Spirit" in order to enter the Kingdom of God. 'See where you are baptized, see where Baptism comes from, if not from the cross of Christ, from his death. There is the whole mystery: he died for you. In him you are redeemed, in him you are saved.' - 618 (in 'Our Participation in Christ's sacrifice') - He calls his disciples to "take up [their] cross and follow (him)",for "Christ also suffered for (us), leaving (us) an example so that (we) should follow in his steps" (abbreviated). - 1551 (in 'In the person of Christ the Head') - This priesthood is ministerial. "That office . . . which the Lord committed to the pastors of his people, is in the strict sense of the term a service." It is entirely related to Christ and to men. It depends entirely on Christ and on his unique priesthood; it has been instituted for the good of men and the communion of the Church. the sacrament of Holy Orders communicates a "sacred power" which is none other than that of Christ. the exercise of this authority must therefore be measured against the model of Christ, who by love made himself the least and the servant of all (abbreviated). - 608 (in 'The Lamb who takes away of the sin of the world') - After agreeing to baptize him along with the sinners, John the Baptist looked at Jesus and pointed him out as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world". By doing so, he reveals that Jesus is at the same time the suffering Servant who silently allows himself to be led to the slaughter and who bears the sin of the multitudes, and also the Paschal Lamb, the symbol of Israel's redemption at the first Passover. Christ's whole life expresses his mission: "to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." - 1570 (in 'The Ordination of deacons - 'in order to serve') - Deacons share in Christ's mission and grace in a special way. The sacrament of Holy Orders marks them with an imprint (“character") which cannot be removed and which configures them to Christ, who made himself the "deacon" or servant of all (abbreviated). Rabbi Aryeh Klapper is Dean of the Center for Modern Torah Leadership, Rosh Beit Midrash of its Summer Beit Midrash Program and a member of the Boston Beit Din.Rabbi Klapper is a widely published author in prestigious Hebrew and English journals. He is frequently consulted on issues of Jewish law from representatives of all streams of Judaism and responds from an explicit and uncompromised Orthodox stance. In this Shiur, given in late 2017 at Yeshivat Eretz HaTzvi in Yerushalayim -Rabbi Klapper tackles the Halachic issues and responsibilities of seniors dealing with various stages of dementia, sufferers of manic depression, people dealing with extreme paranoia, individuals with antiscocial personality disorder, persons with autism, and down syndrome children.Drawing from actual shailos asked to him,Rabbi Klapper explores whether the Megilah can be read with a Bracha to the Alzheimer afflicted Holocaust survivor,or whether the young woman who was deathly certain the whole Shul was out to strangle her had fulfilled her responsibility to hear Shofar. He also shines a legalistic lens on the common practice of having Bar Mitzvah celebrations replete with Brachos on the Torah for developmentally disabled children who had reached the age of majority.Beginning with an exploration of the concept of "Gadol HaMetzuvah VeOseh....",and the emphatic articulation of Rav Aharon Lichtenstein on the seminal importance that Judaism assigns to being in a relationship to a Commander, touching on the comments of Tosfos in Kedushin who introduces the idea of the "transgressive thrill" that only effects ones who have the obligation, the Rabbi then leads his engaged listeners into asking for themselves if they are comfortable with solutions like those proposed by Rav Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg, that encourage society to support Halachic behavior for these persons due to the principle of Kavod HaBrios, while leaving them in truth without any real obligations.Working off the Eretz HaTzvi Yeshiva students' responses,Rabbi Klapper suggests a framework for creating a Rabbinic Chiyuv for society's sake ,modeled on the Torah's own exemptions for women in Mitzvos aseh She Hazman Grama for the better of the home foundation. He finds precedent for this in the position of Tosfos in Megillah 24 who writes in regards to Rebbe Yehuda Bar illai's opinion that ואפילו נסתמא משנולד מכל מקום חייב הוא מדבנן שלא יהא כנכרי ולא יהא נוהג בו דת יהודי כללHe introduces the ingenious question of Rav Mordechai Feinstein(Rav Moshe's brother)of how someone who is exempt from Mitzvos, can still be bound by the Lo Sosur exhortation from God to follow the legislation enacted by the Rabbis, and leads the class in reading and appreciating the brilliant answer offered that has such consequence. As he approaches the solutions to the thorny problems laid out,Rabbi Klapper treats the Talmidim to quicksilver flashes of the formulations of the Minchas Chinuch in regards to a Child's obligations concerning his inherited slaves circumcision in order to take part in the eating of the Paschal Lamb, and Rav Yaakov Chagiz's logical path in sanctioning the murder of a Shoteh who is Patur in Mitzvos. He concludes with an alternative of the standard text in Rosh haShana 28 preserved by Rashi,of one who blows Shofar to exorcise a demon, where the obligation is fulfilled, despite the clear mental distress the Tokea is enveloped in-which should exclude any level of discharging his Mitzvah .Using a principle put forth by Rav Betzalel Zev Shafran that distinguishes between one overwhelmed completely by mental illness to one who evinces insight into their situation, and struggle to fulfill commandments despite the "Shed" that hounds them,Rabbi Klapper leaves his audience with the tools to navigate this extremely important and in many ways uncharted area of Jewish Law.The Yeshiva of Newark @IDT is proud to partner with Rabbi Klapper to help spread his scholarly thoughtful ideas and Halachic insight to as wide an audience as possible .Please visithttp://www.torahleadership.org/for many more articles and audio classes from Rav Klapper and to find out about his Summer programs as well as Rabbi Klapper's own podcast sitehttps://anchor.fm/aryeh-klapper.Please leave us a review or email us at ravkiv@gmail.comFor more information on this podcast visityeshivaofnewark.jewishpodcasts.org See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
