Over the last decade, election campaigns in India have undergone a dramatic shift. Political parties increasingly rely on political consulting firms, tech-savvy volunteers, pollsters, data-driven insights, and online battles to mobilize voters. But what exactly is driving these changes in the landscape of electioneering? The Backstage of Democracy: India's Election Campaigns and the People Who Manage Them is a new book by the scholar Amogh Dhar Sharma which tries to locate answers to this question. The book takes readers behind the scenes, where they are introduced to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell workers, campaign consultants, data strategists and backroom politicians.Amogh is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of International Development at the University of Oxford. His research explores the interface between politics and technology, political communication, and histories of science and technology.Amogh joins Milan on the show this week to discuss the professionalization of politics in India, how the middle class relates to politics, and the BJP's unexpected embrace of digital technology. Plus, the two discuss enigmatic backroom strategist Prashant Kishor and the rise of political consultants.Episode notes:1. There are few modern day political consultants as successful and as well regarded as Joe Slade White. From decades of working with the Bidens (including Beau Biden's campaigns), to his start working in the inner circle of George McGovern's presidential campaign—Joe has more stories and lessons than most of us put together. He has helped start and/or mentored the careers of dozens of highly successful campaign consultants, and generously provided counsel and friendship to many more. In this episode, we talk about the growth of the political consulting industry, how tech has changed creative approaches, the “ad agency” vs. traditional political consulting model, the superiority of cocktail hours over panels, how he spends his spare time, and why simple creative matters.

What do U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders, Angus King, and Lisa Murkowski and rapper Kanye West have in common? They’ve all been third-party candidates! But, three of them have been legitimate third-party candidates, and one is more of a spoiler. Tune in to this special episode to learn what a third-party candidate means for your campaign and how you need to respond. A third-party candidate running in your race could just be a perennial candidate who runs for office as a hobby, or it could be a real threat to your chances of winning. Jennifer came from low income and didn't know how to dream. She was given a death sentence on the operating table at only 32, with her organs swollen. She gave herself a year to change from overworked and stressed to healthy. Two surgeries, learning how to dream, going from a workaholic to balancing her family and work. Knowing she might die gave her a lease on life. She teaches small businesses how to do their own social media and has a course called Success GPS that gets them on the road to success. She teaches that it's not selfish to do your inner calling and having desire means the path is there, you just have to find it. She turned an accidental calling into work and embraces Political Consulting. WOMEN AND POLITICS: VOTING, RUNNING, LEADING It’s been pretty much politics 24 – 7 for the last months, but only a small part of the conversations have been about women actually participating in the process. Are women voting, running, winning office? What is happening with women’s political leadership? Pew Research came out with a report on why women aren’t running, let alone winning. Consultant Cathy Allen can tell us first hand whether that is what she has seen as someone who has helped recruit, train and elect more than a thousand women all over the world. She is one of the first international political consultants to focus on electing women, and worked on Hillary Clinton’s recent (and past) campaign where she focused on turnout, messaging to women, volunteering and endorsements, among other tasks. Every campaign season has its winners and its losers - but there are some people who win no matter what happens. Political consultants are considered a necessity in today's elections, and about half of all money spent in campaigns is going through consultants, whether their candidate wins or loses. Adam Sheingate, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, explores the world of political consultants in his new book "Building a Business of Politics: The Rise of Political Consulting and the Transformation of American Democracy." And in today's episode, he tells Jimmy that business is booming.
Adam Sheingate has written Building a Business of Politics: The Rise of Political Consulting and the Transformation of American Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2016). Sheingate is associate professor of political science at Johns Hopkins University. Who is spending all this money – multiple billions in 2016 – on politics? Consultants, of course, and they’ve been at it for decades. In Building a Business of Politics, Sheingate walks through a century of political history, explaining how the rise of polling and business marketing influenced the nature of campaigns and policy advocacy. The book’s central argument is about the way politics has been reshaped by business and how the business of politics has changed the way we think about policy. Learn more about your ad choices.
