The very first focus when 'building' a bonsai should be the trunk and the nebari. If you do not have the correct plan in place then you will never achieve the bonsai that you desire. Working on ramification will not result in trunk development. Let's have a look at what the difference is. Summer is nearly here and you need to be prepared, for the sake of your trees. We've been given fair warning and the weather has shown us what to expect, so what will you do to ensure your bonsai not only survive but thrive? And we've all made mistakes, especially when using power tools on our trees... In the latest episode of "The Business of Intuition," host Dean Newlund and his guest, Ginine Capozzi, discuss a prevalent challenge in corporate training and development – the rapid decay of knowledge retention. These sociocultural shifts can significantly dampen an individual's capacity to learn. The Influence of Voices in TrainingMaking sure voices are heard and utilized within training sessions is another focus area discussed. By keeping participants engaged and focused, the effectiveness of training is greatly enhanced. Their Conclusion: Trusting the Ripple EffectThe impact of training extends beyond the immediate creating a ripple effect we may not fully comprehend. Trust in the process and the unseen transformation can help organizations and trainers appreciate the long-term value of their efforts. "The easy answer would be like, one size fits all, go do it. 8 hours later, you come back a changed person… Humans don't work that way. We work in incremental progress. In this episode of Beyond the Donation, host Matt Bitzegaio has a conversation with Kat Lacefield, a veteran in the nonprofit sector, about the challenges of fundraising in nonhuman philanthropy. Kat shares her journey of diving into the nonprofit sector at a young age, volunteering and working for different organizations, and eventually specializing in fundraising. She discusses her growth in the field and the importance of donor management. Kat also discusses the concept of nonhuman philanthropy, which includes organizations focused on animals and the environment. She shares the distinct challenges they face and emphasizes the importance of story sharing for effective donor retention. [00:35] Introduction and Guest Background [00:44] Journey into Nonprofit Sector and Fundraising [03:15] Concept of Nonhuman Philanthropy [04:05] “At the end of the day, there's nothing that's really nonhuman because if we're supporting animals, we're also supporting humans. And for the environment, that's a very direct connection to be made with humans of if there's no environment to support us then there's no human societies and communities.” [04:46] “There is no such thing as nonhuman or human philanthropy. We're part of an ecosystem. Each part plays its role.” [05:06] Challenges in Storytelling for Nonhuman Causes [07:11] “How do we talk about the importance of protecting a river? Try to get people to realize when they themselves have appreciated a river - childhood memories, a lot of nostalgia stories, how we feel when we go out and spend time out in nature.” [11:11] Unique Challenges Animal and Environmental Nonprofits Face [15:50] Importance of Donor Segmentation and Retention [20:19] “People tend to not organize their databases very well. For shelters or animal organizations, it's thinking about all the connections that your donors have to your organization - a donor can also be an adopter or a foster family, a board member, or a volunteer. You really need to make sure that your list has as much information on this person as possible.” [31:05] Advice for Nonprofit Leaders: Invest in your Fundraising and Development Strategy [32:48] Conclusion and Contact Information More about Kat Lacefield: Linkedin Website To Connect with Beyond the Donation Podcast: BTD Podcast DonorDock LinkedIn Matt LinkedIn

“What a poorly done L&D strategy is, is reactionary. It is short term. It's not thinking about the big picture,” says Jen Moff, Vice President of Learning and Development at AIM HR Solutions, in this week's episode of Human Solutions. Pete Wright sits down with Moff to discuss how HR professionals can design learning and development programs that strategically align with and achieve organizational goals.Developing a True Learning CultureAn ideal learning and development strategy takes the long view, considering what an organization wants its brand and culture to represent years down the road. It requires dedicating real budget and resources to L&D across all levels of staff, not just selected trainings as needs arise. As Moff explains, “Having a line item in your budget for L&D initiatives, for professional development initiatives, and not just these reactionary, ‘Oh, someone is doing such and such. We need this now'” is the difference between a program that transforms and one that merely checks the box.Getting a Seat at the Leadership TableTo craft an effective strategy, L&D leaders need a view into organizational needs and goals. This requires active partnership and communication across departments. As Wright puts it, “There is no way for you to have an understanding of the organizational needs from L&D unless you are a part of the conversation at a high enough level to be able to hear them.” Moff stresses that executives must actively invite this cross-functional collaboration for it to work.Measuring True Behavior ChangeA well-structured program is ultimately measured by lasting employee behavior change that aligns with corporate values and furthers strategic goals. As Moff explains, “training is a seed that gets planted” but real growth only happens through “integration of what was learned into regular ways of being.” This requires ongoing reinforcement after the training itself ends.Key Takeaways The hallmarks of a strategic learning program versus a reactive one Why cross-functional collaboration is essential for L&D success How to secure stakeholder buy-in and budget for impactful training Measuring L&D through changed behaviors over time, not one-off sessions With decades of combined HR expertise, Jen outlines concrete steps to build a learning culture that transforms organizations from the inside out. In this edition of "Building the Premier Accounting Firm," the host, Roger Knecht, engages in a thought-provoking conversation with Amy Franko, a renowned sales expert and a distinguished LinkedIn Top Sales Voice. Amy imparts her invaluable insights into the realm of sales strategies and the cultivation of a business development mindset tailored specifically for accounting professionals. The discussion commences with Amy drawing a clear distinction between sales and marketing, delineating sales as the direct engagement with potential clients while underscoring marketing's role in establishing general brand recognition. Amy underscores the significance of devising a robust sales strategy and methodology, underpinned by the appropriate technological tools, streamlined processes, and comprehensive skills training. This amalgamation forms the bedrock of what she terms a "business development mindset." They talk about why many accounting professionals don't perceive themselves as salespeople. Nevertheless, Amy underscores the development of confidence and competence in articulating their services and pricing as an absolute necessity. Amy also stresses the art of posing pertinent questions, actively listening to clients' needs, and customizing solutions in response. She highlights the ideal stage of a professional's career at which to foster these sales skills. Amy counsels harnessing the capabilities of technology frameworks and enhancing one's remote communication proficiencies. Furthermore, she emphasizes the creation of a direct client database, advocating a proactive approach rather than sole reliance on social media platforms. In her role as a business owner, Amy underscores the value of fostering collaborations with her bookkeeper, CPA, and financial planner, enabling her to make informed decisions from multifaceted perspectives. She encourages accountapreneurs to fortify their relationships with clients through connections with other trusted advisors. As the episode draws to a close Amy reminds entrepreneurs to consistently assess their growth strategies and ensure the presence of well-defined business development structures and honed skills, vital for attaining their objectives. In this episode, we unpack the potential impact of Auckland's Future Development Strategy on house prices. We discuss the council's preference for brownfields development (redevelopment of existing properties) over greenfields development (creating new suburbs from scratch). While this intensification might drive up the value of land suitable for redevelopment, we caution that these documents often don't have a significant impact on property investors. Instead, more impactful changes could come from actions like abolishing the Rural Urban Boundary. We also debunk the myth that rising building costs directly push up house prices. Main Topics Discussed: Auckland's Future Development Strategy Impact on house prices Rural Urban Boundary Council policy Local government policy

7 Steps to build an iconic brandHere's a deep dive into the seven-step process we use when we work on a business's brand: 1. Know your audienceUnderstanding your audience and their struggles are crucial to building your brand. It will also give you the insight you need to motivate your audience to take action. 2. Know your purposeDefining your purpose drives everything you do as a brand. It solidifies who you are in the minds of your audience. In fact, it's actually your brand's superpower.3. Be consistentDon't be New Coke. Inconsistency creates mental barriers that stop your audience from remembering your brand. What's worse? It can even turn your loyal audience off your brand. Consistency comes from a unified brand strategy across your marketing, design and culture. 4. Be differentIconic brands swim in the opposite direction to their competition. Doubling down on what makes them distinct. Nike is the classic example of a brand that dared to be different from the start.5. Solve your audience's problemUse everything you've learnt about your audience in step one. Then create content, a product or service that solves your audience's problem. 6. Be a storytellerIconic brands know how to turn their audience's problems into engaging stories. So how can your brand turn that core emotional conflict into gold? Make your audience the hero of your brand's storytelling by taking them on a journey.7. Have personalityYour audience won't care about your brand if it doesn't have personality. Whether your brand is nurturing or funny, show your personality any chance you get.---------------------------------------------------------------Do Feel like your brand could use improving but not sure where to start?Or are you looking to build upon and grow your existing brand to create more impact? In this episode Peter Garretson meets with Dr. Ezinne Uzo-Okoro of the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). They discuss the White House space policies in the context of the Administration Priorities, including climate, economy and jobs, restoring US global leadership, COVID and infrastructure, and the intention to lead by example. They delve into the broad context of the White House Space Priorities Framework and its emphasis on sustainability, norms and behaviors, earth observation for climate change. They examine the plethora of policy documents and the 'nuts and bolts' of what is involved in originating and coordinating such documents, including aligning with presidential intent, 'reading the room,' bringing together and educating stakeholders, and soliciting feedback including from industry and academia, making a case for guidance, always with the intent to maintain US preeminence at least 10-20 years down the road. They address how such documents are used by federal agencies, allies, and industry, and the relationship of OSTP to the National Space Council (NSpC), National Security Council (NSC), and Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and sometimes the National Economic Council (NEC) and Climate office...as well as the need for patience and grace throughout the 6-12 month coordination process. They explore the historic nature of the National Cislunar Science and Technology Strategy and the deliberate choice of the language of 'settlement' in the new National Low Earth Orbit Research and Development Strategy, and the consistent industry-friendly themes across documents of new products and scalable infrastructure, and economic growth. They touch on In-Space Servicing, Assembly, and Manufacturing National Strategy and National In-Space Servicing Assembly, and Manufacturing Implementation Plan, as well as the National Strategy for Advanced Manufacturing and Interagency Roadmap to Support Space-Related STEM Education and Workforce. They also cover the James Webb Telescope and exciting DART mission, the recently updated National Preparedness Strategy & Action Plan for Near-Earth Object Hazards and Planetary Defense—"what's cooler than planetary defense." Along the way they discuss Space-Based Solar Power, Exoplanets, Settlement, Space Weather, regulating novel space activities. They review Ezinne's own career and journey, and her reasons for optimism and philosophy of hard work. They conclude talking about how easy it is to become involved in space, because it is a small community where anyone can play, and secrets of success such as: if you want to go far, go together; that success comes from putting one foot in front of the other; the utility of patience and grace, and that there is plenty of work, so grab an oar!

In this episode of the CTO Studio Podcast, host Etienne de Bruin sits down with Jorge Valdivia, the CTO of Fleetio. Jorge shares valuable insights on how his team handles software development, the role of engineers and product managers, and the importance of investing in people. He delves into the strategies and processes that have helped Fleetio stay ahead of the curve in the highly competitive world of software development. Jorge is the CTO at Fleetio, a fleet management software company that helps organizations track, analyze, and improve their fleet operations. Fleetio helps fleets track their own vehicles internally, and also helps with compliance reporting. Rather than doing the work for the customer, the platform helps users unlock the full potential of their fleet management. The company has around 40-50 engineers working on two main products: a web app for fleet managers and a mobile app for Android and iOS. The teams were initially divided by discipline (web, mobile, internal tools) but it wasn't scaling well, as mobile was always trying to catch up with web. As such, they reorganized the teams around domains of the system (Fleet Maintenance, Fleet Operations, Core Team) with developers from different disciplines working together towards the same goal. Fleetio adopted an Agile approach, with product managers running the day-to-day execution. Goals are set at a quarterly level and communicated down to teams. Product managers do customer discovery to understand what to work on. Engineers and product managers have different perspectives and goals, with engineers focused on the present and product managers focused on the future. This can lead to friction between the two groups, but it can also be beneficial in terms of balancing out different perspectives. The CTO may only need to intervene in individual cases. Fleetio's early history and its founder's belief in remote work led to its remote-first culture. The company tries to pretend like everyone is remote, even if they work in the same office, to maintain a remote-first culture and encourage communication. The company places a high importance on the mental well-being of its employees, and works to maintain psychological safety and communication to ensure that employees are comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. Investing in people, whether through professional development or personal interests, will ultimately lead to a return on investment in the form of happier, more connected employees. Managers should be attuned to the well-being of their employees, proactively offer support, and invest in their growth and success. Some clients ask for SOC 2 reports as part of their due diligence process, which can speed up the sales process. The security team reports directly to the CTO, who is also responsible for cross-functional communication and business process optimization within the organization. The CTO must focus on strategic initiatives and coach others on how to work with them in their new role. Etienne points out that value stream mapping is a powerful tool for the CTO to facilitate conversation within the organization and create value for customers. KEY QUOTE: "Investing in people is one of the most important things a company can do. It's not just about hiring the best engineers, but also providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed." - Jorge Valdivia Resources Jorge Valdivia on LinkedIn Fleetio Careers

In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover talks with Nellie Wartoft about utilizing social learning in your enterprise learning and development strategy. See the video here: https://youtu.be/1McHZABDvyI. Nellie Wartoft started as a young entrepreneur in her early teen years in Sweden. After winning several trophies in skeet shooting, Nellie turned her attention to educating the elderly on the internet and digital literacy to improve their qualities of life. This social enterprise was more than a passion and purpose for her - it sowed the seeds of her journey in Social Learning. At the age of 18, Nellie booked a single ticket to Singapore, to build her career and business in what she refers to as “the most buzzing and happening part of the world”. In her first foray into the corporate world at Michael Page, Nellie rose through the ranks and was the youngest executive in the company to be appointed Practice Lead and become a Top Biller at age 23. She's placed over 150 executives into Sales and Marketing roles in Fortune 500 companies within the financial, legal, consulting, technology and media sectors. It was during her time as a recruiter that she spotted a stark skills gap that she was determined to fix. She saw that there was a need to refresh the way business professionals leveled up through actionable insights from industry experts. This led to the launch of Tigerhall in March 2019, a mobile Saas platform for social learning, revolutionizing how professionals learn from one another. Nellie challenges mass education formats that fail to prepare future leaders for success in the real world. Her vision and execution are taking the corporate world by storm. Tigerhall's clients include HP, New Relic and BNY Mellon. She's raised over $10 million in funding from visionary investors such as Monk's Hill Ventures, Sequoia Capital and the XA Network. Fueled by the mission, “where you come from should never get in the way you want to go,” Nellie continues to lead Tigerhall in Fundraising, Sales and BD while scaling the team across APAC and the U.S. Please consider supporting the podcast on Patreon and leaving a review wherever you listen to your podcasts!
