For too long I didn't speak up when I wanted to, even though I was in a leadership role in my company, working for industry leaders like Google, Netflix and UnitedHealthcare. I found myself focused too much on people pleasing, worried that I would be judged or that I would rock the boat. Today's episode gives you three specific tips to help you speak up in meetings, in spite of any doubt you may have.Speak First. You know those few seconds of awkward silence in the beginning of a meeting? Everyone is waiting for someone to go first. Let that be you! Here are three reasons to speak first: It shows your leadership. You demonstrate confidence to jump in right away. When you share your great thoughts, people start listening. Especially when it is relevant and makes an impact. You get your thoughts out of the way so you don't have to worry about several others speaking before you, such that then when it's your turn, you have nothing unique to add.It reduces anxiety. If you go first, you won't be worried about what you wanted to say the whole time, allowing you to be present for the meeting and hear what people are contributing.2. When you want to share your opinion in a way that's diplomatic and direct, say, “here's my vote” or “here's what I think”. Years ago, I was reporting to the president of the company where I worked and one day she surprised me by saying, “Karen, you always come to meetings and ask us what we think. I want to know what you think.” It took me aback, but I realized she was right. I rarely offered my opinion because I was afraid my boss wouldn't approve or think it was any good. This method of interjecting with “here's my vote” felt really good to me because the sentence prompt alone helped me have a strategy in my toolbox when I needed it. After doing it many times now and seeing my clients use this same strategy, I know it works!3.How to stop rambling and get to the point. Our tendency to ramble is one of the biggest obstacles to presenting well. As a recovering rambler myself, I get it. It's hard to stay on point when we have so much to say, or we're nervous. Sometimes we come across as unfocused without realizing it. Or, we realize it and have a hard time knowing how to get out of it.How do you fix it? Here are two ways:If you notice yourself doing it and your words are already out there, pause, gather your thoughts and say out loud, “My point is this…” and state your point. If you realize you're lost, pause, stay silent, gather your thoughts and move on with your point. No one will notice the difference, most likely. Pausing gives the audience a chance to absorb what you said and gives their brains a break. Some resources for you:Want to be a clear, compelling and credible communicator? The political context in which people grow up can play a hugely influential role in how that age cohort participate in democracy. From the dominance of different political parties and prevalence of strikes and protests, to the distribution of information and ideas through social media, the society people are raised in affects the ways in which they interact with politicians and political ideas. Maintaining an informed and engaged electorate in the decades to come requires grappling with these historical shifts and their implications for democratic governance. Does the historical context of when a generation comes of age affect their political engagement? Are older generations, for example, who came of age in a period when elections were fundamental to the existence of democratic government, more likely to engage with political parties? What about younger generations coming of age in the historical moments that followed? And what can this tell us about how democratic governance and political participation could change in the future? As part of the Connecting Generations series of Thought Leader Talks, the Resolution Foundation is hosting an event with Professor Maria Grasso to discuss how age, period and cohort analysis can help us examine generational differences in political activities. Following a presentation by Maria, we will hear from leading experts on what this means for the future of politics and democracy. Pat Martin campaigned hard for local NH state representatives who were committed to local action on climate change, but found her candidates on the losing side in those elections. Rather than waiting for the next election, and the uncertain promise that they held Pat has chosen a third path, she has opened up communication with her newly elected representatives with a letter that provides a model we all could use now, to build the relationships needed for change now. Pat, is a member of a growing and well-informed network of local grassroots organizations that are pooling their expertise and energy - if you will - to actively reach out to make their voices heard on the triple threats of climate, energy and environmental sustainability. Pat and my second guest, Susan Richman who serves as the communications director of the NH Network for Environment, Energy and Climate are an example of the many environmental patriots who are speaking out to make sure that all of our voices are heard and that we work to build bridges between people of goodwill with the hope that calling other in will be more effective than simply calling them out. This podcast is important not only because it stresses the power we have when we join together to make our voices heard, but because it offers some real and pragmatic ideas for what we can do right now as citizens of New Hampshire and the planet to foster change and sustainability.
Kris first wraps up the Summit, and what an amazing time that was had by all. She then welcomes Ellen Reynolds, the CEO of the Georgia Child Care Association. Ellen talks about her background in law and love of all things education, and how it got her into lobbying, advocacy, and effecting change at the policy level. She talks about the complexity of how regulated the childcare industry is, and how you can become more involved as an advocate in the world of ECE to impact positive change. Key Takeaways: [6:49] What an amazing summit! #bestsummitever. Special thanks to the incredible Lisa Nichols. [10:40] The Georgia Child Care Association represents 3,200 licensed childcare providers in Georgia, with members all across the state. Ellen started lobbying on behalf of the association 20 years ago when it was just herself and just five people. In 2017, she took over as the CEO. [12:59] Ellen was also a lawyer. Her role at GCCA represents her family upbringing: her mom was an award-winning educator and her dad was a small business owner. [14:40] Ellen hopes at some point that GCCA can help other states grow their associations. [16:52] Three ways that you can help get your voice heard and be an agent of change: Join organizations such as GCCA. They can't survive, let alone thrive, without those membership dues. Attend a meeting that the organization has, training opportunities, or join the advocacy network. Get to know your state elected officials and representatives. Don't be afraid of them! [19:44] If you haven't joined already, be sure to hop on and say hi on the new Child Care Champions Facebook Group page. It's not just advocacy tips, but business success resources. [21:51] Ellen gives her advice on if you have to start a group from scratch or when your state doesn't have a strong association already. [24:32] At GCCA, they look out for all members. [30:40] Great childcare advocates know that you have to work with people on both sides of the aisle, and your main mission is to forward important issues for the growth and health of the childcare industry. [31:12] Childcare is not a partisan issue. [38:56] Childcare is one of the highest-regulated industries in the world, and we have a responsibility to make sure that those regulations, policies, and laws are in our best interest whenever we can impact that. [42:41] How people can be best prepared for the future financially, especially with elections on the horizon. Quotes: “I love the work that I do on behalf of providers, helping them have the very best environment possible that we can create so they can do what they do well and take care of babies.” — Ellen [12:21] “I believe that GCCA has been the strongest and most vibrant and engaged association I've worked with.” — Kris [13:44] “Organizations like ours can't survive, let alone thrive, without those membership dues.” — Kris [16:52] “We look out for all of our members.” — Ellen [24:32] “Childcare is not a partisan issue. This is about caring for children, and making sure they maximize that brain development those first few years of life, and we don't need this to become political.” — Ellen [32:12] Sponsored By: ChildCare Education Institute (CCEI) Use code CCSC5 to claim a free course! Leader and founder of legendary group Public Enemy, and part of the supergroup Prophets of Rage, Chuck D is a social activist, author and digital music pioneer. The New York Times has named Public Enemy's music to their list of the “25 Most Significant Albums of the Last Century” and in 2005 The Library of Congress included Fear of a Black Planet in a list of 50 recordings worthy of preserving that year in their National Recording Registry. Staying informed and engaging on issues that affect your farms and food is easier than you think. For the last 50 years the government's policy has been “get big or get out.” Consolidation of our food and agricultural systems with the goal of the cheapest food possible has been driving small farmers out of business for decades. Judith McGeary, founder of Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance, shares how she found herself in a position to speak up and advocate for small-scale farmers and ranchers who produce food using sustainable and regenerative methods. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/amostlygreenlife/message

Stacy Odom is self employed as the director of Odom Community Development Corporation, Vice President of Monroe Park Neighborhood Association, and the primary caretaker for her mother. This past election cycle Stacy worked hard, alongside her mother, to organize people to vote by registering first time voters and getting people to the polls. We discuss how the right to vote and the responsibility to vote is connected to our understanding of the human dignity and the dignity expressed in each person's work in our society. Stacy describes how she finds a way to talk to elected officials or people in power to make her voice heard and the importance of investing in your neighborhood and local community. Through Odom Community Developers she leads a team to repair and build homes in the neighborhood she grew up in and shares the challenges the pandemic presents in continuing this work.

In today's episode we are revisiting a topic that I know many listeners are concerned about, and that's making sure your voice is heard and understood at the end of life – even when you lose capacity to do so yourself. Many things are outside of our control when it comes to how and when we finally shuffle off this mortal coil, but there are ways in which we can at least make our wishes known. Steve: Today is going to be an Awesomers insights episode where we talk about something that's very important to me and you're going to get a very special opportunity to do something I think that is not a common thing. And I'm going to talk to you more about that here in a minute. Now this is Awesomers episode number 39. And it's surprising to me that we've already cranked out nearly 40 episodes. And this episode 39 is going to talk about something very special. But before we dive into that I wanted to share a couple things with you. First of all if you haven't been to Awesomers.com and you want to know about any show notes and details about this episode, you just go to Awesomers.com/39. Now if you just go into the regular Awesomers.com website by the way you can join our mailing list and you'll get drip fed some free stuff. We don't oppressively email your spammy trying to get you to buy a bunch of stuff is a matter of fact we don't directly sell anything. Often will refer resources to whether they're bookkeepers or a software program or things that we use and like but we're just not hard sales guys running out and beat you down to buy stuff. We share what worked for us and that's part of the the magic of working with the Awesomer community. And so this particular episode we're taking a little bit of a diversion from our normal interviews with either book reviews or the backtalk live episodes and even the interviews with entrepreneurs. Because we've got a very special opportunity. 2:51 (Steve talks about the Empowery Ecommerce Cooperative.) Steve: Now the Empowery Nonprofit Cooperative, so it's called the Empowery Ecommerce Cooperative if you haven't heard of it. I want to just give you a kind of a brief overview and then tell you something very unique that's happening right now. So the Empowery Ecommerce Cooperative is all about members joining together and the members actually own the coop. Each member has one vote, they have one share and they own the coop. So every member side to side owns one share and they all have one equal vote.
