Mark Rank, Professor of Sociology at Washington University, discusses how chance and randomness profoundly impact our lives and shape history. Mark dives into the example of Buddy Holly and Richie Valens' tragic plane crash, where a coin flip determined who would be on the plane. He also explores the Cuban Missile Crisis, where a sailor's foot getting stuck on a ladder narrowly averted nuclear disaster. Through personal anecdotes and historical examples, Mark emphasizes how luck and chance are woven into the fabric of life, urging us to remain humble and ready for random opportunities. His book, The Random Factor, delves deeper into these themes, challenging readers to appreciate life's unpredictability and the role of chance in both personal and global events.

Check the website here: http://enlites.com/ Dr. Mark Rank is Herbert S. Hadley Professor of Social Welfare at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Rank is widely recognized as one of the foremost experts and speakers on issues of poverty, inequality, and social justice. He is the author of several books, the latest one being The Random Factor: How Chance and Luck Profoundly Shape Our Lives and the World around Us. In this episode, we focus on The Random Factor. We discuss what “randomness” means, how ancient people thought about chance and luck, the role of change in biological evolution, and whether randomness is studied in the social sciences. We talk about chance in human history; scientific discoveries and technological innovations; the lottery of life; the role of gender, race, and social class in life outcomes; poverty and economic inequality; and careers, marriage, and professional success. We discuss why many people dismiss the role of chance and luck in their lives, how individual agency fits into the picture, why politicians should keep randomness in mind when designing social policy, and reframing meritocracy. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, BERNARDO SEIXAS, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. America is steeped in the notion of rugged individualism. It's comforting to think success is based on our own hard work and self determination. But social scientist Robert Mark Rank says random chance governs far more of our lives that most of us want to admit. This week on Big Books and Bold Ideas, Rank joins MPR News host Kerri Miller to talk about his new book, “The Random Factor.” He shares how luck and chance play a crucial role in shaping history, the natural world and our everyday lives.
It's comforting to think that we can be successful because we work hard, climb ladders, and get what we deserve, but each of us has been profoundly touched by randomness. Chance is shown to play a crucial role in shaping outcomes across history, throughout the natural world, and in our everyday lives. In The Random Factor: How Chance and Luck Profoundly Shape Our Lives and the World around Us (University of California Press, 2024), Dr. Mark Robert Rank draws from a wealth of evidence, including interviews and research, to explain how luck and chance play out and reveals how we can use these lessons to guide our personal lives and public policies. The Random Factor traverses luck from macro to micro, from events like the Cuban Missile Crisis to our personal encounters and relationships. From his perspective as a scholar of poverty, Dr. Rank also delves into the class and race dynamics of chance, emphasizing the stark disparities it brings to light. This transformative book prompts a new understanding of the twists and turns in our daily lives and encourages readers to fully appreciate the surprising world of randomness in which we live. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Professor Mark Rank, Herbert S. Hadley Professor of Social Welfare at Washington University in St. Louis talks with Megan about his new book The Random Factor including just how random our life is.
A new book says random chance determines much of the course of our lives and even the history of the world.Jeff speaks with Mark Rank the author of "The Random Factor." and a professor of social welfare at Washington University.
Kathryn interviews Author Mark Robert Rank.Americans tend to believe that success comes from hard work, determination and little else. That attitude leads, and has led, to a threadbare social safety net and the undue suffering of millions — so why are we still holding on to the idea? Social welfare professor Mark Robert Rank shows how dramatically our lives are shaped by utter randomness. He unpacks how our aversion to the very idea of luck—our need to believe that personal success or failure comes from internal strength or weakness—leads to policies that weaken the social safety net and favor those who, by chance, were born with a leg up. He's been featured on NPR, NBC Nightly News, the PBS NewsHour, CBS News, CNN, and many others.Kathryn also interviews Author Jonathan Fanning. In a world where creativity is increasingly recognized as a vital skill, Jonathan Fanning, a renowned leadership and creativity expert has discovered a blueprint of 5 powerful and practical strategies to unleash creativity. He draws on decades of research and experience to provide a comprehensive guide for understanding and nurturing creativity. Through inspiring anecdotes, thought-provoking questions, and powerful – yet simple – strategies, readers will learn how to overcome creative blocks, cultivate a creative mindset, and harness the power of imagination to solve problems and pursue their passions. He has been coaching leaders – from Fortune 500 executives to sole proprietors – for almost 20 years. Jonathan was voted the best speaker at a recent TED conference.

Welcome to Showcasing House Music DJ Mixes by dattrax!! It was with great sadness as we saw facebook light up with 'Rest in Peace' shout outs to "Romanthony" (real name Anthony Moore, 1967 – May 2013). In Toronto we grew up with Romanthony records like his four-vinyl "Romanworld" compilation, and singles in that album and pre-dated that album like "Now You Want Me" (a Toronto anthem at 3am sat. ngt. warehouse sessions- one of our favourite instrumental house tracks). Other fav vinyls like "Testify", "Trojan Horse", "Bring U Up" and everyone's favorite "Let Me Show You Love".Time moves past us relentlessly and we have to be thankful and make the best of each day. Mr. Moore's music will influence many many house lovers, djs, producers & vocalists to come. The great thing about this house music we love is that it's built on the shoulders of giants. The great house music you hear today was built on the sweat and love of house music 20+ yrs ago.Every track we heard, every DJ we danced to, every mix we felt contributed memories, mind space and reenforces our passion for house.Enjoy this mix as it opens you to the house tracks that we love right now. dattrax: It was with great sadness as we saw facebook light up with 'Rest in Peace' shout outs to "Romanthony" (real name Anthony Moore, 1967 – May 2013). Other fav vinyls like "Testify", "Trojan Horse", "Bring U Up" and everyone's favorite "Let Me Show You Love". Time moves past us relentlessly and we have to be thankful and make the best of each day. Mr. Moore's music will influence many many house lovers, djs, producers & vocalists to come. The great thing about this house music we love is that it's built on the shoulders of giants. The great house music you hear today was built on the sweat and love of house music 20+ yrs ago. Every track we heard, every DJ we danced to, every mix we felt contributed memories, mind space and reenforces our passion for house. Enjoy this mix as it opens you to the house tracks that we love right now. Close your eyes, turn it up loud and join us and let your emotions move with each track as we tell you this new story. In this mix, featuring tracks by these UNBELIEVABLE HOUSE VOCALISTS & PRODUCERS! Thank you for just doing your thing and putting out such great tracks!! It's been a while Fellow House Fiends, hope everyone is enjoying family & friends, life and working hard achieving your goals. It's increasingly more difficult to put aside time for this love of ours called House Music. But we would be thrilled if this house mix put a huge smile on your face, make you shake a little, and make you forget your deadlines at work, financial challenges or any other struggles. Leave that stress and get lost into the sounds. House is such a force. One of the only things we do that we have so much joy in the process and when we are mixing tracks that we love, it's one of those rare moments where we don't think of being anywhere else. Focused energy with no mind drifts- letting everything come through our fingertips and THUMP through the speakers! With Christmas just around the corner, hope you crank this mix LOUD while you are driving to & from a great get together with your loved ones. Merry Christmas and God Bless you and may He open your eyes to the important things in life. There are some tracks that just feel really good to me: the tracks that cause those tingle-type sensations that go up the back of my spine up through the top of the head...Cosmic Quivers, if you will. In this mix, the single unifying theme I went for is tracks that make me feel good. A few of the selections have been known to cause Cosmic Quivers from time to time such as the super synthy Random Factor - Second Principles (10:20) and the techy yet surprisingly beautiful Hoito - Modern Kush (36:40) [thanks Slee]. Both of these are amazing pieces of cosmic work...I've been sitting on the Random Factor track for over a year waiting for the right mix to use it in.... After completing this mix, I noticed this mix has a fair amount of soul and vocal-influenced feelgood tunes as well, notably the Temptations vocals sample in Robert Poretti - A Girl Like You (24:44), Danny Daze+Matches - If This (27:00), Mike Shannon - Under the Radar (Rozzo Mix) (31:47), the scat singing in Daso, Jin Choi - Teer (Rodriguez Jr Mix) (43:47), and Miguel Migs closer....I suppose there's something about a vocal hook that makes it easier for me to connect with... All in all, a lot of tunes here that make me feel good...hopefully they'll have the same effect on you. Moomin - Raw Like 97 Shades of Gray - So Easy Random Factor - Second Principles Lee Foss - U Got Me Phonique - Divertimento feat. Guti Roberto Perotti - A Girl Like You Danny Daze, Matches - If This Mike Shannon - Under the Radar (Rozzo Mix) Hoito - Modern Kush Daso, Jin Choi - Teer (Rodriguez Jr. Remix) Shades of Gray - Dis This Miguel Migs - Intro - Life feat. Half Pint
