Junior Brown on his new album and career highlights

This interview on Backstage Sonoma features host Steve Roby in conversation with renowned Country guitarist and singer Junior Brown. The discussion highlights Brown's illustrious career, marked by the release of 12 studio albums and multiple hits on the Billboard Country Singles Charts. It begins with an overview of Brown's musical journey, including influences from television and radio icons of the 50s and 60s, such as Ernest Tubb, and shows like "Hullabaloo" and "Shindig." Brown delves into the creation of his iconic instrument, the Git Steel double-neck guitar, explaining its practical utility in allowing him to switch between electric and steel guitar seamlessly during performances. The talk transitions into Brown's songwriting process, where he emphasizes the importance of titles and hooks in crafting his lyrics, typically before melodies. “When I'm asked about songwriting, a title will practically write the song if it's a good title, and every line of the song must support it. And if it doesn't, then you're getting away from it. You're drifting.” Host Roby draws attention to Brown's famous live rendition of "Highway Patrol," a song by Red Simpson. This performance showcases Brown's ability to personalize and revitalize classic tunes. Memorable performances, such as playing with rock and roll legend Bo Diddley, are recounted enthusiastically, underscoring significant milestones in Brown's career. The interview also touches on collaborative experiences with country music legends like Ray Price, George Jones, and Hank Thompson, hinting at these encounters' profound impact on Brown. Looking ahead, Brown shares his vision for an innovative album blending surf music with his trademark "twangy" sound, inspired by a painting he created called "Git Steel Surfer." The interview wraps up with mutual appreciation and well-wishes for Brown's future endeavors. Overall, the interview is a compelling blend of nostalgia, technical insights, and forward-looking creativity, offering fans a deeper appreciation of Junior Brown's multifaceted artistry. Junior Brown's California tour will make three stops in the North Bay, starting August 14 at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley. On Friday, August 16, he plays at the Uptown Theatre in Napa and the Raven Theatre in Healdsburg for a show on Saturday, August 17. Ticket info here.

Trucking's music history has no shortage of light-hearted songs, such as Kay Adams' “Little Pink Mack,” Charlie Walker's “Truck Drivin' Cat With Nine Wives” or The Legendary Shack Shakers' “The CB Song.” One of the most humorous, thanks to its sharp barbs aimed at truckers, is Joe Cecil “Red” Simpson's “Hello, I'm a truck.” It hit No. 4 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in January 1972, making it the biggest hit single in Simpson's long music career. “This song takes a different angle on the trucking experience,” says Todd Uhlman in this specia Songs of the Highway edition of Overdrive Radio. Uhlman's a specialist in American culture at the University of Dayton in Ohio. “It's not about the trucker. It's about the truck.” At the same time, the truck isn't shy about criticizing truckers. The truck-narrator notes how drivers love to share “tales of daring” and “the girls they've left behind.” The truck criticizes its own driver, too, and, as Simpson often does, references other trucking songs: “Look at him sipping coffee and flirtin' with that waitress. And where do you think he left me? That's right, next to a cattle truck. Why couldn't we have put me next to that little pink Mack sitting over there?” Hear more about the truck's place in trucking-music history in this edition, and find so much more in Overdrive's 2021 60th-anniversary series covering trucking history and more via http://overdriveonline.com/trucking-history

A while back we explored road songs in the genres of blues and tradition. This week’s show complements the theme with a country flavor. Songs of the lonesome road, the lost highway, the wrong highway taken, as well as hitting the road with those classic country kings of the road and highway queens. We’ll hear some early Waylon Jennings, bluegrass from Bill Monroe, trucker laments from Red Simpson, and a tribute to the Carters on the Road to Kaintuck. We’ve battened down the hatches, closed shop, and are practicing social distancing as if our lives (and those of our neighbors) depended on it. As part of putting together this Christmas Special 2019 we have chosen to eschew the usual banal Christmas offerings. Richard and Tobin have gunned down some tunes that will not necessarily feature anywhere else this Christmas. Check out that turkey dinner playlist! There's the usual family disparity and abject dislike from The Therapy Sisters. Tobin once again proclaims that Christmas isn't Christmas without bluegrass with The Clarke Family and he finishes the Christmas Special 2019 with a more traditional feel. In between you'll meet the unlikely bedfellows of William Shatner and Iggy Pop, with some useful insight from a listener. Song introduction maestro Red Simpson is Truckin' Trees for Christmas and dressing up his truck. Yeah, right. There's much festive music to go at in our Christmas Special 2019 Louis Armstrong offers some traditional vibes and The Waitress along with Devo give us a little alternative Christmas edge. However, without doubt, the stand out track is from Sufjan Stevens this year. So, chuck another log on the fire, wrap up in your scarf and hideous skin tight Christmas jumper and pour yourself something that you'd turn your nose up at any other time of year. Born in Catoosa, Oklahoma just outside of Tulsa, Leach wrote his first song at age ten. After moving out to California, he began to be recognised for his prodigous songwriting talent and by the time the mid 1960s had rolled around, he'd had several songs recorded by Wynn Stewart, Bobby Bare, Buddy Cagle and others. On the strength of his 1964 single "Highway Man" (later recorded by Red Simpson and Ernest Tubb), which appeared on the Cash Box charts - he signed an exclusive songwriting contract with Dewey Groom, of Longhorn Records out of Dallas, Texas. And so was born our feature album - twelve tracks, all written or co-written by Curtis Leach speak to the level of country talent that he was. If not for a murky and untimely homocide on the front lawn of his residence in Mesquite, Dallas, Texas - there's little doubt that Curtis Leach could have gone places, because that man had country music talent in spades. Highlights include several wonderful recitations, such as "Golden Guitar" (a national hit for Bill Anderson merely months after Leach's passing); the Okie-pride in "Oklahoma, Home Of My Heart"; the magnificent and fuzzy "Wheelin' And Dealin'" and one which has appeared on many late 20th Century truck driving compilations, "Highway Man".

In this week's episode, we're featuring a sensational Capitol compilation of all-truck driving country: "Put The Hammer Down!" (1976). Popularized by the booming baritones of singers like Dave Dudley and Del Reeves in the 60s, truck-driving country music hit a peak in the early-mid 70s in the USA, right around the time of a nationwide fuel shortage and significant spike in CB radio use. CB radio use amongst truckers, however, was oftentimes to get around speed traps and organise resistance against government regulation in capped speed limits and fuel price increases. The half-sung and half-spoken recitation style of truck-driving hitmakers Red Simpson and Red Sovine echoed the sound of a CB radio, and Merle Haggard and Dick Curless spoke to the trucker in plain, relatable lyrics often delivered with revved-up guitars and standout twang. Our feature album showcases those artists and more (most on the Capitol label itself, hence any glaring omissions) in ten songs that epitomise what the American trucker came to represent: a blue-collar hero who lived the American cultural ideals of autonomy, non-conformity and freedom but who had fierce pride in their country and the principles upon which she was founded. Highlights include Haggard's theme song to the TV show of the same name in "Movin' On", Dick Curless' twangy re-recording of "A Tombstone Every Mile", Red Sovine's tearjerker "Phantom 309" and Red Simpson's sense of zeitgeist in "I'm A Truck". A thoroughly enjoyable album.

Collateral Damage. Unmoored Democrats encouraging political violence against Republicans. We review the disturbing trends. How far will they go? Senator Mitch McConnell harassed in a Kentucky restaurant. Discussion of the "bizarre" political instincts cropping up on the Left these days, possibly facilitated by years of MSM insulation from reality. Democrats careening from backfire to backfire, pressing buttons that seem tailor-made to boost GOP turnout. Failed Leadership? Unresolved Hate? Grassroots activist Jan Cook outlines the burgeoning "Walk Away" movement in Colorado. Meanwhile, additional "Caravan" conversation on the hard life in Honduras. Can the U.S. Military peacefully protect our Southern Border? The risks involved. We sketch impressive MAGA Economic tailwinds for GOP candidates, wages up bigly in U.S. trucking and steel and all across the board. The Wall Street Journal reports America is once again the world's "most competitive economy." Also, our Deep State Updates as Glenn Simpson pleads the Fifth, Nellie Ohr declares "marital privilege" and Rod Rosenstein chisels a special deal. Skating? Out of time? Luckily, Mueller's "jig is up." Plus, tongue-in-cheek anecdotes about RTD banning fake "service animals" on public transportation. No snakes, tarantulas or malevolent ferrets. Best known for singing a string of successful trucking-themed country songs in the 1960s and 70s, Red Simpson was also a highly influential behind-the-scenes songwriter from Bakersfield, California. Buck Owens recorded more than 30 Simpson originals, including the Top 10 hits “Gonna Have Love,” “Sam’s Place,” and “Kansas City Song.” Additionally, Red penned perennial standards, such as “Close Up the Honky Tonks” and “You Don’t Have Very Far to Go.” As an artist, he released a total of seven albums for Capitol and logged seven charting singles onBillboard’s country rankings, including the Top 40 hits “Roll Truck Roll” and “The Highway Patrol.” He is perhaps best known, however, for singing “I’m a Truck,” which hit the Top 5 in 1972. Simpson played guitar on most of Buck Owens’ recording dates in the mid-1960s, including sessions that produced hits such as “Buckaroo” and “Waitin’ in Your Welfare Line.” He went on to play numerous sessions with Merle Haggard, who referred to Simpson as a “hillbilly hippy.” Merle recorded a couple of Simpson originals on his 1969 album Pride in What I Am, and Red went on to play guitar on Haggard’s classic live LP, Okie From Muskogee. A half dozen other Simpson compositions have been recorded by Haggard, who wrote “A Bar in Bakersfield” in tribute to his old friend. As a songwriter, Simpson enjoyed additional charting singles by Charlie Walker, Wynn Stewart, Junior Brown, and others. His songs have also been recorded by Ferlin Husky, Johnny Paycheck, Wanda Jackson, The Byrds, Gram Parsons, Dave Dudley, Roy Clark, Roseanne Cash, Steve Wariner, Lucinda Williams, Alan Jackson, Candi Staton, Dwight Yoakam, and many more. Simpson died on January 8, 2016. This is the final in-depth interview with the California country mainstay Bob Dylan once called "the forgotten man of the Bakersfield Sound."
