This week we will be considering the confidence that we have in the one true God. We will study in particular the confidence that He gives us in the privilege of prayer. But "prayer" to any god is not really prayer. Only prayer addressed to the one and only God is true prayer. Our final hymn will emphasize the nature of that one true God, in whom we have absolute confidence and to whom we pray. This is hymn 541, O Blessed Holy Trinity in The Lutheran Hymnal. This hymn by Lutheran pastor Martin Behm, is both a prayer to the true God AND and confession of who that true God is. The hymn is based primarily on the Aaronic and Pauline blessings of the Old and New Testament. These blessings highlight the nature of what the Christian Church has called the "Triune" God. Both of these blessings bring out the three-fold nature of the true God. The Aaronic blessing (the blessing given to Aaron in the Old Testament) states: "The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace." (Numbers 6:24-26). The Pauline blessing (the blessing used by the Apostle Paul) says: "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen" (2 Corinthians 13:14). The stanzas of Behm's hymn develop and utilize these two Bible verses and what they tell us about God. He is three in person, but one in essence. The Triune God is Father and Maker, Son and Redeemer, and Holy Spirit and Comforter. This God has created and preserves us, protects us, instructs and cheers us, and illuminates and keeps us in the faith. The hymn, which was written just under a hundred years after the start of the Reformation, also draws from and beautifully incorporates Luther's Morning Prayer in stanza 2. Luther wrote: In the name of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept all harm and danger away from me last night; and I pray that You would also protect me today from sin and every evil, that my life and all my behavior may please You. Into Your hands I entrust my body and soul and everything else. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the devil may have no power over me. Amen. There is inestimable value in knowing the true God and having absolute confidence in His power, love and mercy. There is joy in our ability to come to the true God in prayer, knowing that He can and will answer according to our need and His will for us. We worship and serve a wonderful God! Join us this weekend to be assured of that confidence and to blend our voices together to sing praise to Father, Son and Holy Spirit for all that our God does, has done and will do for you!

- Frag deine Leute, was sie brauchen. Hosts Amy Hudson and Dr. James Fisher discuss all things stretching and muscle soreness with Dr. Dave Behm, author of The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching. They cover the most common affliction, when it makes sense to stretch, and for how long you should stretch. You'll also hear expert insights on the correlation between stretching and strength, the different stretching approaches, and how they impact your sports performance, as well as a couple of fun facts you probably haven't heard about…but that are backed by research! Today's episode looks at all things muscle tightness, stiffness, and soreness, as well as the key role of stretching. Hosts Amy Hudson and Dr. James Fisher are joined by muscle physiology researcher and The Science and Physiology of Flexibility and Stretching author Dr. Dave Behm. Dr. Behm explains that, unlike what many may believe, it's not just elderly people who should stretch – but everyone, since we start to lose flexibility by the age of five. In the Western world, low back pain is the most common affliction. The main cause for your lower back muscles becoming too stiff? Sitting for long periods of time… Dr. Behm provides a breakdown of the impact that being seated for too long has on your body (including the different areas it affects). Amy introduces muscle knots into the conversation, and Dr. Behm addresses the difference between muscle knots and general tightness. Dr. Behm touches upon the role of collagen, while Dr. Fisher shares his surprise that the hip flexors and pectoral muscles are not the most common pain Dr. Behm mentioned. Did you know that, at times, neck pain or headaches can be caused by your hamstrings being too stiff? That's where the “meridian chain” comes into play. Research on so-called “global effects” or “non-local effects” show that stretching your shoulders makes your hamstrings more flexible, and vice versa – stretching your hamstrings makes your shoulders more flexible. Have an injury to your right hamstring? Don't just be sitting around; stretching your left hamstring will help! The Cross Education Effect is the process in which, by training one side (e.g., your right arm), the other side (e.g., your left arm) gets stronger too. This has been known since the 1890s. Dr. Fisher and Dr. Behm touch upon foam rolling and a study that looked at the impact of doing a similar type of movement. A study carried out by Dr. Behm showed that it's possible to get stronger by stretching on a regular basis and for several days a week (for a minimum of 15 minutes a day). There are differences between stretching during a pre-game warm-up routine and stretching to get a semi-permanent increase in range of motion. Dr. Fisher shares that the Exercise Coach now offers 20 or 40 minutes of coach-assisted stretching on top of the 20 minutes of strength training. Doing slightly too much stretching during your warm-up routine can impact your game or performance by 3-5%... but it can dramatically decrease the chances of you getting injured. Remember: stretching doesn't prevent all-cause injuries, but it can result in a reduction in muscle and tendon injuries, especially with explosive-type activities. An additional benefit of stretching is the fact that, by doing it on a regular basis, you tend to get stronger at longer muscle lengths (the so-called force-length relationship). Amy talks about a piece of exerbotics equipment called The Crossfire and what it helps clients with. Numerous studies by Tony Kay have shown that doing eccentric resistance training has a very positive effect on range of motion as well. Dr. Behm discusses a current article he's writing that focuses on the effect of stretching on relaxation. Mentioned in This Episode: The Exercise Coach - Get 2 Free Sessions! Following in the footsteps of a legend is a hard task...but doing so after winning a national title is a little easier. In April, Herbie Behm was elevated to become the new head coach of Arizona State's swim & dive teams following the men's team taking home the NCAA title and the departure of legendary coach Bob Bowman. A former Sun Devil swimmer, Herbie would join the ASU staff in 2018, and over the years has earned a reputation as one of the best and most innovative young coaches in the sport. On this episode, Herbie and I discuss his start in the pool, the journey from cut program to national champion, seeing Sun Devils win gold on the world stage, his vision for the future, and more.
Fresh off of leading Arizona State to its first NCAA team title in program history, Bob Bowman announced he would be leaving to head up the swim and dive program at Texas. A number of athletes left Arizona State following this announcement, either to follow Bob Bowman to Austin or pursue their swimming at other programs. One athlete who had trained under Bowman and was expected to follow him (from the outside) was freshman Ilya Kharun. The Canadian national had seen vast improvement under Bowman in just one year, capping his season with an NCAA title in the 200 fly. However, having built a life and community in Tempe already, Kharun opted to stay and train under newly named head coach and ASU alum Herbie Behm. It seemed to work for the rising sophomore, as he qualified for his first Canadian Olympic team and left Paris with 2 bronze medals in the 100 and 200 fly. In this podcast, Kharun discusses his decision to stay at ASU, what training with coach Behm has been like, and how he managed his event load in Paris and wound up on the podium twice.
