Millions of men are tired of the way in which MAGA Republicans have defined masculinity in the traditional, restrictive fashion - emphasizing the “hard” side of men and shaming the “soft” side. This includes prioritizing independence over interdependence, thinking over feeling, autonomy over connection, and emotional suppression over vulnerability.  The old view is “power over” others rather than “power with”. The old view is to exert control over women which is demonstrated by MAGA's views on abortion and birth control. The solution is not to prioritize the hard side of masculinity over the soft side. Nor is it to prioritize the soft side over the hard side. The solution is to create a climate which values all sides of masculinity (or even better, humanity!), so that we may bring the best aspects of ourselves to any situation as needed. The solution is to stop shaming men when they feel natural, healthy human emotions (think of how Gus Walz was treated when he displayed love, connection and pride over his father at the DNC). What is the Man Box?  It's the rules you absorbed as a boy about what it means to be a “real man”; rules that have made you emotionally constipated, caused conflict in your romantic relationship, encouraged you to chase material things, and caught up in a hyper-competitive rat race. The rules include such classics as be tough, hide your feelings, dominate women, be self-reliant, don't be feminine, and don't be homosexual. Research shows that this restrictive, tired view of masculinity has negative effects on us. The more we subscribe to traditional Man Box beliefs, the lower our self-esteem (Cournoyer & Mahalik, 1995), the more difficulties we have in romantic relationships and friendships (Fischer & Good, 1997; Sharpe & Heppner, 1991), the more we act in violence (Franchina, Eisler, & Moore, 2001), and the more depressed and anxious we feel (Cournoyer & Mahalik, 1995; Hayes & Mahalik, 2000).Join Dr. John Schinnerer and Mark Greene in a fascinating conversation about the Man Box culture, and how it's playing out in politics right now. The solution is not to flip the script so that we overvalue the soft aspects of men over the harder aspects.  The goal is to honor both the hard and the soft sides of our humanity equally. It's giving men permission to tap into all aspects of their humanity so that they are comfortable bringing the best parts of themselves to a particular situation. This is not a problem at an individual level. It is a cultural issue, a culture in which the full spectrum of our humanity has yet to be valued fully. The thing I love about the Man Box idea is that none of this is your fault. You didn't ask to be socialized like this. You had no control over it. It just happens. So keep in mind that while this is not your fault, it is your responsibility to evolve beyond the Man Box. And that's what we are seeking to do in this election, discover more ways to evolve our masculinity.About Dr. John's Esteemed Guest, Mark Greene:Mark Greene works to engage men in creating diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace cultures. Mark also highlights powerful  statistics from Equimundo that show how man box culture affects men in the USA, Mexico and the UK. For generations American men have been raised in a rigid structure of what it meant to be a man, which had its benefits in the dominant position of power in the patriarchy, but was destructive to their personal relationships and authentic selves. Now our society finds itself at a tipping point of either a resurgence, or the end, of the patriarchy as we know it. We're living through a major upheaval and this evolution is getting a lot of pushback from men who clearly feel they are losing something and are lashing out, individually with violence, or collectively with the regression of everyone else's rights. Leadership & Masculinity is fast becoming the must-have reference for male leaders. The author contrasts old strength leadership (command and control, benevolent dictatorship, discriminatory, my way or the highway, top down) with new strength leadership (win-win, power-with, inclusion and vulnerability, collaboration, openness and diversity). As an experienced leadership consultant and wilderness guide, Matheus explains that the transformative leadership journey is not easy - it entails some heavy lifting and challenging route- finding - but his little book gives clear and practical advice for leading well, living fully and leaving a positive legacy. Critically, this book explores the power games and key thinking that trap male leaders into outdated ways of leading; and then gives clear direction for moving forward into a more inclusive, diverse, equitable and collaborative leadership style. The text effortlessly cuts through the noise and confusion with simplicity and precision. The author signposts a clear direction, practical guidelines and a new leadership vision and adventure for men. Charles Matheus is a seasoned leadership consultant. For generations, our culture has taught us a narrow and limiting set of rules for how to be a man. The end result? Epidemic levels of isolation for boys and men and embedded repression and violence for the vast majority of women and children. I learned that same set of rules and I adopted that stoic, suppressed, and sometime emotionally violent version of manhood. it took me years to find a way back to the real authentic version of myself that is open, loving, curious, vulnerable, bold, and creative. What if it were easier for boys to grow up whole and for men to break the shackles of dominance based masculinity? I (Charles) spent most of my life, struggling to balance my desire for equality, authenticity, joy, nonviolence and connection with my desire to fit in with my gender. It took years to find them, but it turns out there are men who are choosing a kind of masculinity that encompass real human values. Thousands of men have broken out of the man box and its rigid repressed dog eat dog version of masculinity. They - we - are choosing a masculinity of connection, compassion, and collaboration. In return we have healthier relationships, and more meaningful, lasting lives. And now there’s a new podcast dedicated to interviewing some of those men and encouraging others to join them: Remaking Manhood, The Healthy Masculinity Podcast. This week on the HERE.together Podcast we are releasing, in full, the first episode of the Remaking Manhood Podcast which I co-host and co-produce with Mark Greene. In this episode, both Mark and I share old stories of shame and (somewhat delayed) redemption. Mark explains with powerful clarity the system that keeps most men in the Manbox and then I lay out the three different ways men can start their own path toward authentic, healthy manhood. I really hope you find it inspiring and I hope you share it with the men and young men in your life. Fortunately Jose took the time to investigate and reclaim his missing parts, his full authentic masculinity. And now Jose is running his own business promoting men's comprehensive health. Ever Forward Club's Ashanti Branch is joined by Mark Green, keynote speaker and author of the books The Little #MeToo Book for Men and Remaking Manhood. (3:11) Mark shares information about his publishing house, ThinkPlay Partners, NYC. (5:48) We learn about how starting a blog on masculinity 12 years ago, and stepping outside the traditional rules of masculinity led Mark to the work he does today as an author, work that is closely tied to Ashanti's work around masks. (12:45) Mark and Ashanti reflect on how they both found their calling: Mark came to men's work at the age of 56, and Ashanti remembers how certain behaviors were considered “feminine” in his cultural background, and always struggled with this dissonance. (16:27) Both men embark on a winding, compelling discussion on the theories behind how troublesome behaviors associated with “being a man” start in early childhood. (33:20) Mark and Ashanti begin to share their masks. (35:00) After sharing the front of their masks, they discuss Ashanti's drive to raise his family out of poor circumstances, and how it's intertwined with race and power in our society. (38:40) After sharing the back of their masks, they discuss grief, and how Mark “wasted half a century”; Ashanti then shares his grief over his father's death, and how it affected how he questioned traditional masculinity from childhood onward. (43:42) Mark and Ashanti discuss how our culture of competition builds subconscious patterns within us that cause a tension within us that many refuse to understand. (49:30) Mark and Ashanti both become deeply moved. After getting to truly know each other they both begin to confront demons in their past. He’s the author of The Little #MeToo Book for Men and Remaking Manhood, and the co-author along with Dr. Saliha Bava, of The Relational Book for Parenting. In this Living OUT Leadership Interview we cover a broad range of topics that relate to the problems of masculinity and man box culture, the patriarchy, bullying, silencing, and policing gender. The Man Box and #MeToo for Men Mark explains where the term, “man box” came from and how he defines “masculinity”. Men have been taught to suppress, deny and take for granted their masculine identities. Men are taught from an early age, as young boys, to think in a certain way, including to not show their emotions, to be a leader, aggressive, dominant, sexually active, care and talk about sports, and to be a real man. “Wrongly gendering the universal capacity for human connection as feminine and then coaching boys to see feminine as less is how we block our sons from the trial and error process of growing their powerful relational capacities, leading to a lifetime of isolation.” The challenge with man box culture is that it is brutally enforced between men. It abuses boys and men to conform to restrictive ideas for decades over the course of men’s lives that has a traumatic impact on men’s emotional state, sense of identity, the performance of masculinity, and connection with others. These are all crucial aspect in whether men can or cannot form relationships at all, and is one of the reasons for the increase in social isolation and loneliness of men. Bullying as a form of control and reinforcing the hierarchy What are the effects of bullying on men – on the person being bullied, and the bully himself? “In what is clearly representative of the isolating impact of man box culture, boys entering late adolescence are shamed and bullied into seeing their close authentic connection with their best friend as weak (feminine). Accordingly, they slowly disengage from their closest friendships. It is at this time that suicide rates for boys rise, becoming four times the rate for girls.” The cruel fact of man box culture Greene explains that we all knew the script. We were all taught the script. We had to denigrate women and LGBT people in order to be allowed to not be a target and to fit in. The kids and boys in our community who were awkward, with disabilities, or couldn’t pull off the appearance of masculinity became permanent targets. A culture of dominance, hierarchy and abuse needs a permanent population of targets, namely women, LGBT people, and boys who don’t fit in. Empathy: Not the kind of courage men are taught to present We beat out of young boys empathy, connecting across difference, and caregiving. Then we shame them if they exhibit those tendencies. “The list of central relational capacities that man box culture suppresses includes empathy. The suppression of boys’ and men’s empathy is no accident. It is the suppression of empathy that makes a culture of ruthless competition, bullying and codified inequality possible. It is in the absence of empathy that men fail to see women’s equality and many other social issues for what they are: simple and easily enacted moral imperatives.” Policing gender performance: LGBTQ In the world of gay men, we often see self-identified, straight-acting gay men who may use terms on dating apps like, “Masc4masc, looking for other “dudes”, and “no femmes”. The word straight-acting is an ironic misnomer: those claiming it are in fac...
