If you're a fan of young adult fantasy or heartwarming children's stories, this episode is a must-listen! We had the pleasure of chatting with two talented authors who are using their craft to inspire and connect with readers of all ages. First up, we welcomed back Sarah Arthur, the author of the "Once a Queen" and "Once a Castle" YA fantasy novels. Sarah shared the fascinating backstory behind her latest novel, "Once a Castle," and how it evolved from the "book of her heart" to the "book of her sweat and blood." We learned about her creative process, including the challenges of juggling multiple perspectives and characters, and how she drew inspiration from the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien. But Sarah's insights went beyond the writing itself, as she delved into the role of faith, divine inspiration, and community in the creative journey. She offered thought-provoking perspectives on the balance between skill and spontaneity, and how even the most seasoned authors can be surprised by their own characters. Next, we had the pleasure of chatting with Chelsea Chong Kim, the author of the delightful children's book "Carol the Carrot Bowls for the Salad Bowl." Chelsea shared the personal experiences and values that inspired her to create this heartwarming tale, from her time as a teacher to her passion for embracing diversity. We were particularly moved by the powerful testimonies she's received from parents and children who've connected with the book's themes of resilience, communication, and the importance of community. Whether you're a fellow author, an avid reader, or simply someone who appreciates the power of storytelling, this episode is sure to leave you feeling inspired and eager to dive into these authors' captivating worlds. Ever wonder how life's decisions impact our family dynamics? In our latest series, 'It's a Wonderful Life,' we unravel this, exploring the ripple effects of our decisions on multiple lives. From our own journey of relocating within the DMV area (Washington, D.C. /Maryalnd / Virginia), to our guests, David and Kelly's experiences of shifting homes - we tread on this journey of discovery together.David, our son-in-law and part of our multi-generational household, shares his unique insights on acclimating to new neighborhoods and cultural landscapes. He candidly discusses the profound effect these changes can have on one's sense of identity and humor. Kelly, our daughter, sheds light on her experiences of adjusting to new environments. As we talk about our own experiences of adjusting to fresh surroundings, we delve into the ways they shape our parenting styles and decisions on moving with our own families. We also reflect on the cultural adjustments when moving from a diverse "salad bowl" community to one that was more of a "melting pot" and the effects of that on our family. While we as parents wanted a different neighborhood and easier commute, we also found challenges in advocating for our children in an unfamiliar school system. The kids had to navigate friendships as they tried to form their new community.Lastly, we emphasize understanding the value of a different place and how it can enrich our lives. We also look at the balancing act of agreement and disagreement within the parent-child relationship, and the importance of providing a nurturing environment where kids can express their thoughts and feelings without fear. So, tune in as we navigate through our lives' transitions and comprehend the impact they can have on family dynamics.Thank you so much for spending time with us today! Paul Sellew is the Founder and CEO of Little Leaf Farms. His "farm" occupies massive greenhouses in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania and he expects that by 2026, he'll have 100 acres "under glass" and be able to offer sustainable crisp salad greens to over 50% of the American salad eating world. We'll all be crushing on Little Leaf's hydroponic and sunshine nourished salad greens. He's not the only one who believes in his success: Superstar Bono and his RISE Fund recently made a $300 million dollar investment in the company. That's a lot of arugula! Have you ever been in a position where you had to choose between the corner Starbucks and your local black, queer and veteran-owned coffee shop? Actually, let's rephrase the question: do you know where the local black, queer, veteran-owned coffee shop is in your neighborhood? This episode of Brands Unbridled examines matters just like this with IB Majekodunmi, founder of Refine Collective—a community that makes it easy to identify and support minority and women-owned businesses + freelancers. In this conversation, IB shares how recognizing a gap between the growing purchasing power of people of color, women and members of the LGBTQ+ community led to a digital network that provides consumers the opportunity to easily locate and buy from the underrepresented, in addition to cultivating a network for business owners.
