A lot is expected of you when you're the defending DCI World Champion. Through the eyes of head drum major Andrew Arbouzov and color guard captain Cheslee Morgan, Dan Potter finds out Santa Clara Vanguard is handling the pressures of the summer of 2019.
Santa Clara Vanguard is currently enjoying its most successful season in almost two decades. The California corps looks to have a competitive edge heading into the final week of the season and could be on track to claim its first World Championship title since 1999. Some of the credit for the corps' return to the top of DCI's World Class goes to second-year artistic director Michael Gaines. In this week's Field Pass podcast, Dan Potter goes in-depth with Gaines about the design and performance of Vanguard’s 2018 production "Babylon."

Formed in 1967, Santa Clara Vanguard is celebrating its golden anniversary this summer, and the corps is definitely in pursuit of gold on the road to Indy, topping last year's champs the Bluecoats for the first time in three years at DCI Minnesota. But, success rarely comes without controversy. Dan Potter looks at the debates Vanguard's show, "Ouroboros" is sparking in its 50th year, as well as how the corps is answering its critics, in today's Field Pass.
yeah, I was there, right up front, vip-style, on the 50, not that anyone bothered to say hi…anyway fuck you and here is a remastered sample of the fluegel (alto) solo in Canton’s world-championship program, along with some hornline bad-assery, including a soprano, err….I mean trumpet solo. Yes, it’s Wink-Man, who trills on a high … Continue reading "v0 – best of DCI 2016 …."
Tapper guides us through some rare, old school cuts of everyone’s favorite (OK, in everyone’s top5…lower if you leave out the corps you are/were involved in) – One of two all-male corps left in the Division 1 class – THE MADISON SCOUTS. Comment and the usual bs underlies the choice music cuts; as rushed products … Continue reading "An extremely rushed podcast to commemorate Madison’s visit to SoCal pt. 1 …."

Our former colleague from Boston Brass, horn player JD Shaw, joins us for this episode of The Brass Junkies. JD is currently Associate Professor of Horn at the University of South Carolina, musical arranger for Santa Clara Vanguard, and is frequently in demand as a soloist and clinician. This episode was actually recorded way back in January 2014 immediately following our recording session for the Brass Recording Project. We had planned to launch the podcast shortly thereafter but things like a baby ended up pushing that back until now! JD talked to us a lot about arranging: his process, what instrumentations he likes to write for, and how he got started. He has written extensively for brass quintet, drum corps, wind ensemble, orchestra, big band, and a bunch of other instrumentations. He also touches on his time with Boston Brass, his over 25-year history with drum corps, recording his arrangements with us for the Brass Recording Project, and much more! You can help offset the costs of producing the show by making a small donation at https://www.patreon.com/thebrassjunkies. Your support is greatly appreciated!
