Senior employee space case Stew, new hire and lifelong nerd Dash Starkiller, and the sensitive part timer Rose are all looking for the store's cat, which is missing on the most important day of the year, the day a minor celebrity comes to Empire Records and boosts their sales. That celebrity is Denise Leary, a formerly famous singer songwriter who got caught up in a plagiarism scandal years ago. The missing cat isn't the only disaster; Dash has broken a faucet that threatens to flood the store, and the uptight GLAG organization is putting pressure on the community to boycott Empire Records. U.S.A. Track and Field star Noah Lyles caused quite a stir back in August when he called out NBA players for referring to themselves as “World Champions" after winning their league title. Several NBA All-Stars -- and even Drake -- took issue with his words, and did some verbal sparring online. But Lyles's comments were part of a wider campaign to elevate himself and his sport to new heights. Today, we take a closer look at one of track and field's brightest stars, why he attracts so much attention, and how he hopes to both resurrect and transcend his sport.Guest: Andrew Greif, Los Angeles TimesRead Andrew's Full Story HereSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Over the last seven days singers Jimmy Buffett and Steve Harwell passed away, a music festival called Electric Zoo spiraled into chaos after reaching capacity, and the Burning Man festival was inundated with rain and mud. Buffet died September 1st and Harwell on the 4th; Electric Zoo and Burning Man deteriorated over Saturday the 2nd and Sunday the 3rd. Last Tuesday was also the anniversary of Princess Diana's death - August 31, 1997. What makes this all peculiar and perhaps more than just the algorithmic cycle of parallel news stories is that Princess Diana's death on the 31st, all those years ago, took place on a day considered by many to be an inverted, or Satanic, version of what is normally celebrated on August 13th. On the Ides of August the ancient Romans celebrated the FESTIVAL OF TORCHES or Nemoralia in honor of Diana. It usually took place on a LAKE. But on August 31 Diana becomes Hecate in the underworld when her light is extinguished and her waters dry up. The inversion of the torches themselves also do not extinguish them, as they go on to illuminate the infernal. How interesting is it then that Burning Man, which culminates with the burning of an effigy of the ‘man', takes place on a dried up ancient lakebed between August 27 and September 4, when attendees leave. This means that Burning Man is essentially a seven day festival and that August 31 falls dead in the center of the event. The festival location itself is called Black Rock City, in northwestern Nevada, a name which has incredible occult significance, but particularly in relation to Hecate because her ‘color' and stone are black obsidian - black rock. This year the dried up lakebed was refilled with flood waters that prevented 70,000 people from leaving. The flooding began on Saturday, the day of Saturn or Hecate. But this still didn't stop festival goers from burning the man under the moon on Monday, or moon-day, night, the day of Diana. All of this may therefore sound far more than just a fun ritual of music, camping, and some fireworks. Instead, it sounds like the death of major celebrities at the start and finish of a weekend of disaster and chaos, which just so happens to have very strong connections to ancient festivals of fire, lakes, the underworld, black rocks, and sacrifice. Even more disturbing is the reported and then scrubbed supposed case of ebola at Burning Man this year, a condition in which the person has black vomit. With the excessive trash left behind by festival participants, the famous use of drugs and sexual debauchery, and the like, Burning Man is nothing more than a ritual honoring of the sacred black stone and the witch-goddess Hecate. Travis Scott also announced this weekend, on September 1, his first world tour since the Astroworld disaster. The tour is called Utopia and aims to open up a New World. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5328407/advertisement

This week some 'worthless fellows' question if Saul is up to the task of being their king. -How can this man save us--- they ask. And yet, when the time comes, he proves himself more than capable of going before them and fighting the battle for them as they requested of their king. But Saul gives credit where credit is due saying, -Today the Lord has worked salvation in Israel.- That is the only true and appropriate response to the questions of our opponents and to the doubts we might have ourselves. -How can this man save us--- It is the Lord alone who is mighty to save.

Grammy nominated, singer-songwriter John Ondrasik joins Newt to talk about his new single and video, “Can One Man Save the World?” The song is inspired by the courage of President Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine and asks the United States and the world to stand up for the core values of freedom and justice. The video was filmed on location on a Ukrainian battlefield with the Ukrainian Orchestra. John was aided by the non-proft, Save Our Allies. Newt's guests are John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting and Sarah Verardo, one of the founders of Save Our Allies. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As you certainly know by know if you're a regular listener of this program, a good chunk of my career was spent in music radio in Los Angeles. Back in 1997, while working as Rock Editor of the radio/record industry trade magazine "The Album Network," I heard a record from a new band called Five for Fighting. I fell in love with it. I met the man who recorded under that band name, John Ondrasik, just in time to learn that his label, EMI, was folding. The album, "Message for Albert" died. But John remained a friend. A few years later, he got another record deal and released his second album, "America Town," and the song "Superman" became a smash, bolstered when the 9-11 first responders embraced it as an anthem of sorts. Today, John joins me to share his newest song, something he wrote about and to raise funds for the people of Ukraine. It's called "Can One Man Save the World?".. A nice way to end the week, I think...

1 I saw that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: yea, there is no man that knows either love or hatred, though all are before their face. 2 Vanity is in all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good, and to the bad; both to the pure, and to the impure; both to him that sacrifices, and to him that sacrifices not: as is the good, so is the sinner: as is the swearer, even so is he that fears an oath.3 There is this evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one even to all: yea, the heart of the sons of men is filled with evil, and madness is in their heart during their life, and after that they go to the dead. 4 For who is he that has fellowship with all the living? there is hope of him: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. 5 For the living will know that they shall die: but the dead know nothing, and there is no longer any reward to them; for their memory is lost. 6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, have now perished; yea, there is no portion for them any more for ever in all that is done under the sun.7 Go, eat thy bread with mirth, and drink thy wine with a joyful heart; for now God has favourably accepted thy works. 8 Let thy garments be always white; and let not oil be wanting on thine head. 9 And see life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which are given thee under the sun: for that is thy portion in thy life, and in thy labour wherein thou labourest under the sun.10 Whatsoever thine hand shall find to do, do with all thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Hades whither thou goest.

What do you get when you combine a decent screenplay based on personal experiences, a director with a specific vision for bringing that screenplay to life, and a controlling movie studio just looking to cash in on the latest movie craze? Simply put, you get what eventually became the cult classic Empire Records. This film is many things for many people but when all is said and done it seems like it's a film that's "just there" for most. Chances are you've seen this film at some point since its 1995 debut, and if you were one of the lucky ones who got to see it in one of 87 theaters it played in—you should probably play the lottery more often, just make damn sure it's not on Rex Manning Day. You've been warned. What was supposed to be the next big hit music-based film, with a huge theatrical debut and a killer soundtrack to follow, turned into the movie studio/production company doing little to no promotion for the film, taking control of the direction of the film, and turning that huge theatrical debut into a theatrical release that was a fraction of what was originally planned. Oh and that killer soundtrack that was supposed to accompany the film turned into a hodgepodge of random songs—many having nothing at all to do with the actual film itself. But why? How did a film with such potential turn into a bastardized version of what could have been? This week we take a look at (and attempt to unpack) what the hell happened with this train wreck turned cult classic, and try and get Russ to look beyond his love for music and enjoy the film for what it is—a feel-good film, with simple but interesting character dynamics, witty one-liners, and an overall message of sticking it to "the man". It's season 3 episode 14 of your favorite record store owner's favorite music podcast. LET'S GO! Keep up with all of the music we talk about in each episode by listening to the Infectious Groove Podcast Companion Songs playlist, exclusively on Spotify. The Beta Report: A podcast about Netflix, Amazon Prime and movie recommendations and reviews
When you're struck with a jolt of fear and the thunderous charge of danger is shockingly near. Worry not, as the electrifying duo of Black Lightning and Pun Man are here to light your darkest nights! Okay, that is about as punny as I can get without throwing up. But, this is our show in a nutshell. We review the CW's brand new super hero show Black Lightning's first episode. Are the characters compelling? Is the villain a real threat? Is this show Beta Approved? You'll have to listen to find out. And, as the CW universe of DC characters continues to expand, we discuss what movie or TV universe we'd most like to live in. Would Uno like to live in the MCU to assume his secret super hero identity: Pun Man? Would the Kon want to meet the alternate Khan in the Star Trek Universe? Am I going to Never-land so that I can really be Forever Five?!? You'll just have to listen to find out. We also decided to extend last week's SECRET WORD CHALLENGE for one more week! We also have a new SECRET WORD CHALLENGE for this week that would effect our blog. Plus, as always, we have a new...no, we have THREE PICKS OF THE WEEK for you to check out. All that and many many more puns, and so much more, on this week's episode of The Beta Report.
With Seal ready to sign albums for fans, $2000 missing from the books, and one employee out of her mind on E Revolution records is in a heap of trouble. If our sibling employees are able to see each other’s merits and work together there is still a chance to save the store. Or I guess everyone could double down on a lack of empathy and let the world burn. EITHER IS GOOD.

Revolution Records has been circling the drain for almost a decade. It's the weakest link in a chain of family businesses in western Chicago. Under new management by the youngest daughter, there is a small glimmer of hope. She has managed to keep the somewhat incompetent employees focused enough for the store to limp towards an event sure to bring in new customers. Seal will be signing his latest album Seal 3 this afternoon. If it goes well, everything might be okay.

Subscribe to this podcast on iTunes by clicking here: http://bit.ly/ymotwitunes or on Stitcher by clicking here: http://bit.ly/ymotwstitcher. The always cheerful Dr. Robert Selliah, founder of American MedChem, is deadly serious about finding cures that could save up to 200 million children around the world. He explains, “About 7,000 rare diseases are known and nearly 20 million children in the US and 200 million children worldwide have some form of rare disease. But for 95 percent of these rare diseases there are no effective targeted medicines. 30 percent children with rare diseases will not live to see their 5th birthday. Lack of medicines is primarily because it is not profitable for pharmaceutical companies to create medicines for these children – no market-based drivers.” Robert explains how far reaching the problem is. “In the same way, lack of profitability for pharmaceutical companies is the reason for the lack of medicines for nearly 500 million children in poor countries afflicted with neglected tropical diseases. But sick children need safe and effective medicines too, so they can get well and enjoy a healthy life. The big question is this: what is the best gift we can give a very sick child? Answer: healing medicines. This is what forms the core value of AMC.” So, Robert created AMC to solve these problems. “AMC as drug discovery and development technology organization creates and provides these essential targeted medicines necessary to treat children afflicted with rare diseases and neglected tropical diseases. AMC changes the status quo and fills the existing gaps in medicines to treat children, who currently have no medicines. Genetics technology is driving exact diagnosis of rare childhood diseases, but diagnosis without available treatment is useless for the children and families.” Undaunted, Robert keeps pushing. “AMC is set up to collaborate with research leaders in biology and genetics, carry out the critical discovery and medicinal chemistry research at AMC, and bring forward clinical candidates for testing and approval by FDA. Technology is readily available, talent is plentiful, the needs are huge; but we need the strong support of philanthropy to fund this work. AMC is currently seeking major philanthropic support.” “At AMC our commitment is to create healthy outcomes for children diagnosed with rare and neglected diseases. The status quo is unacceptable, because industry has left these kids out of the mainstream for reasons of profitability. We know that our vision can become a reality for sick kids by applying existing drug discovery technology to create very specific drugs for specific diseases. The age of precision medicine is here, and sick kids must benefit from this technology also,” Robert concluded. AMC is presently conducting a crowdfunding campaign on Fundly with a goal of $500,000. So far, he’s raised nearly $10,000 for this work, but there is a long way to go. You can help by clicking here to learn more.
