Once one of the most popular genres of video games, adventure games have become much more niche in recent years. But thankfully, it's a niche with some absolutely fantastic music! From the mid-80s to the early 2000s, adventure games were at the forefront of narratives in interactive entertainment. In a time before RPGs embraced cinematic CGI cutscenes and voice acting, LucasArts, Sierra, and other adventure game developers were pioneering multimedia in video games, presenting audiences with expansive stories, fully-voiced casts of characters, full-motion video, and some truly memorable “moon logic puzzles.” They also created some incredible music! Join Adam, Hilary, and Jono as they move through adventure game history, highlighting some of their favorite music tracks from classics of the genre (and there might be some talk of musical theater thrown in there for good measure)!Featuring: Hilary Andreff, Jonathan Logan, Adam Luhrs; Edited by Jonathan LoganLinks for this episodeYouTube - How Octopath Traveler Hypes its Boss Battles - Game Score FanfareTracklist0:15:48 - The Magic Meadow (Mark Seibert) - Sierra Soundtrack Collection0:19:43 - Deep in the Caribbean… (Michael Land) - The Secret of Monkey Island0:34:16 - Atrus' Study (Jack Wall) - Myst III: Exile Soundtrack0:37:03 - Grim Fandango (Peter McConnell) - Grim Fandango Remastered Original Soundtrack0:59:36 - Gyakuten Saiban 1~3 Courtroom Suite (Masakazu Sugimori, Noriyuki Iwadare) - Gyakuten Saiban 15th Anniversary Orchestra Concert1:08:26 - Crusin' (Jared Emerson-Johnson) - Sam & Max Save the World Soundtrack1:48:34 - Adam's Bonus Track!Bonus Background Tracks0:00:39 - Courtroom Lounge ~ Opening Prelude (English Turnabout Mix)(Masakazu Sugimori) - Professor Layton VS Gyakuten Saiban Magical Mystery Music0:02:13 - You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (Clark Gesner, Andrew Lippa) - You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (1999 Broadway Cast)0:02:31 - Game of Life (Michael Kooman, Christopher Dimond) - Dani Girl (Demo)0:03:14 - Overture (Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice) - Jesus Christ Superstar (1970 Concept Cast)0:03:37 - The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (William Finn) - The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2005 Original Cast)0:03:57 - Three Coins in the Fountain (Jule Styne, Sammy Cahn) - Forever Plaid (1990 Off-Off-Broadway Cast)0:04:26 - Hot Stuff (Pete Bellotte, Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey) - Disaster (2016 Original Broadway Cast)0:05:13 - Overture (Work Song) (Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, Jean-Marc Natel) - Les Misérables (1987 Original Broadway Cast)0:05:33 - Prologue (We Might Play All Night) (Heidi Rodewald, Stew) - Passing Strange (2008 Original Broadway Cast)0:06:31 - Karnak's Dream of Life (Brooke Maxwell, Jacob Richmond) - Ride the Cyclone (2021 Studio Cast)1:39:35 - Title Theme - Star Trek: 25th AnniversaryAlbum LinksSierra Soundtrack CollectionVGMdbMyst III: Exile The Soundtrack Our Review VGMdb Grim Fandango Remastered Original Soundtrack Our Review (Original Soundtrack) VGMdb Amazon iTunes Store / Apple Music Spotify Gyakuten Saiban 15th Anniversary Orchestra Concert VGMdb CDJapan Spotify Sam & Max Save the World Soundtrack VGMdb Steam Bandcamp Professor Layton VS Gyakuten Saiban Magical Mystery Music Our Review VGMdb CDJapan Get in Touch:RPGFan.comEmail us: music@rpgfan.comTwitter: @rpgfancomInstagram: @rpgfancomFacebook: rpgfancomTwitch: rpgfancom
It's the heartwarming tale of two psychopaths who save the world from people more dangerous than even them. Sam is a laid back dog, Max is an impulsive rabbit-thing, and they are classic adventure game protagonists. This episodic adventure game came early in Telltale's life as a studio, when they were attempting to reimagine how to make classic adventure games well after the bottom fell out of the industry. While this season shows some growing pains, it's hard to deny the inherent charm of these characters and this world.
It's a Max, Max, Max, Max, Max, Max world on this week's episode of Telling the Tale. Wolfe and Dustin have wrapped up their playthroughs of Sam & Max Save the World and at least one of them has a lot of feelings on the secret identity of the season's villain. Is it super problematic? Is it super problematic, but that's okay? Is it super problematic and not okay, but we shouldn't really be the voices on it as two straight, white men? We don't know; we're two straight white men. It's time for a very special political episode. Watch us bob and weave through Bush-era-specific presidential humor and emerge without a scratch. This episode marks an increase in episode-scope at the ol' Telltale factories, and Wolfe and Dustin definitely have some thoughts about what that means for the future of Sam & Max. All that and more in this week's episode of Telling the Tale. Check it out: mob stuff. This is the mob episode! Sam and Max can't GET enough mob style hijinx going on. Boy howdy, that there sure is a lot of colons for the name of a video game, huh? Sam & Max break out into television stardom, so of course Dustin and Wolfe have some thoughts. More than last week, the 2006-ness of Telltale's first season of Sam & Max is starting to show. How do each of the hosts feel about that? Find out in this week's episode of Telling the Tale. Wolfe and Dustin kick off the podcast by talking about Culture Shock, the first episode of Telltale's early flagship game, Sam & Max Save the World. How does it hold up in 2021? Is it a good first kick into the mainstream for Telltale? Do children understand what Swiss cheese is? These questions and more are sort-of-answered/sort-of-dodged in this week's episode of Telling the Tale. All of the Day is back again! Setzer got a little sickly so it's just Derek and Cheston this week. The boys spend a lot of time breaking down what was a pretty middling week from Sony: from a former exclusive title launching day one on Microsoft's game pass to more Sony Japan departures. They also squeeze more talk about the PS3/Vita/PSP store closing. Wow! On the gaming side, this week Derek mostly talks about It Takes Two but also sneaks in a teensy bit of Monster Hunter Rise talk. Cheston is almost done with Mario 3D World and decided to wash the taste of that down with some Sam and Max Save the World remastered. They changed some dialogue but he seems to dig it so whatever! It's finally happened: a game once covered as a new release by this very podcast is now officially retro! And that game is Sam & Max Save the World, the 2006-2007 episodic release that brought about the grand return of Sam and Max 13 years after their original video game outing. Now, 15 more years have passed, and while Telltale has since dissolved, former members of the company scooped up the rights and released a spiffy new remastered version. On this episode of Retronauts, join host Bob Mackey as he grills Skunkape Games' Jake Rodkin and Dan Connors about the rabbit and dog duo's newly refurbished adventures. Retronauts is a completely fan-funded operation. To support the show, and get exclusive episodes every month, please visit the official Retronauts Patreon at patreon.com/retronauts.

Launch day for Microsoft's XBox Series X has come and gone, and the new console is now in the hands of the lucky gamers who managed to get a pre-order -- or... maybe not so much. We're rounding up the headlines surrounding the Series X's launch to see how well Microsoft did in kicking off the ninth gen.But before that, of course, we've got game announcements to cover (like upcoming remasters for Mass Effect and Sam and Max Save the World), and then it's on to the news. This week, we're talking about the drop in the stock prices of several video game companies seemingly in response to the announcement of a promising COVID-19 vaccine, SEGA's "voluntary retirement" mandate for 650 of its employees, Twitch's apology for (and clarification of) the handling of its recent DMCA crackdowns, and The Rock's partnership with Microsoft to donate XBox Series X consoles to children's hospitals. Then finally, we'll wrap up the show with a look back at the original XBox on the console's 19th anniversary.Sign up to join the #SU2CStreamTeam:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf07ThgTma7gfcfL3xS-JB2KdtKEaok2j3cwWKNIogdI9WYGA/viewformBuzzsprout Affiliate Link (https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=825751)Hosts: @wrytersview, @retrogamebrews, @thewellredmageMusic: "Gumption" by Russell Gordon at https://soundcloud.com/shredrussell-1Editing: @wrytersviewLogo: @thewellredmageSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/storymode)
Jessica Curry has the latest and greatest music for video games. Composing duo The Flight have been behind the scores for Alien: Isolation, Assassin's Creed Odyssey and the Ivor Novello winning Horizon Zero Dawn, which really push the sonic boundaries of how games music can sound. Alexis Smith from the Flight joins Jessica in the studio to talk about how you collaborate on a game and why creating and experimenting with new sounds and instrumentation, from harmonica orchestras to analogue robots, can bring a game score to life. Plus Jessica has a eclectic and surprising mix of musical treats from games, including music by American singer Rhiannon Giddens, an epic opera boss from Nier: Automata and a classic track from the world's most famous - and certainly fastest - hedgehog, Sonic. Naturally, this influence can also be heard in many games, in obvious and more subtle ways. Our new mixtape is an attempt to put together fifteen of these tracks, including the music from fairly lynchian games such as Deadly Premonition, Kentucky Route Zero, Mizzurna Falls, Thimbleweed Park and Virginia, ANAMANAGUCHI's glorious cover of the Twin Peaks Theme, and Angelo Badalamenti's own contribution to video game music back in 2005. Just for kicks, we also covered Nobuo Uematsu's "Lurking in the Darkness" by ourselves, to emphasize its similarity with "Audrey's Dance".Have fun!01 MoozE - Main Menu Theme [S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
