Ever since Seo Taiji and Boys broke onto the scene in their baggy overalls back in 1992, Korea has been working to cast as wide a cultural net as possible on the world stage. And, by placing young talent through rigorous game show incubators and pumping out dozens of attractive, talented, and universally appealing musical artists, they succeeded. With the meteoric rise of groups like BTS and Blackpink, K-Pop now had a hoard of die-hard fans in the West - a cross-cultural exchange to challenge Beatlemania. In this bonus episode, Hannah and Maia talk about K-Pop stans, who have become some of the loudest voices on the internet, and often use those voices for good. But when the conservative K-Pop industry subjects its artists to unprecedented levels of public scrutiny and input, and leaves them at the whims of a rabid global audience, can it spawn a new, dangerous form of parasocialism that we may never come back from? Tangents include an incredibly sophisticated T-Pain impression, and the tragically overlooked Lonely Island cinematic masterpiece, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. FULL episode can be found on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/c/rehashpodcast

K-Pop was born with the formation of the group Seo Taiji and Boys and their experimental sound that mixed in hip-hop, coupled with dancing on stage. Their debut song “Nan Arayo” ("I Know") premiered on a talent show on April 11, 1992 which is why we consider this date the birth of K-Pop. Today's episode is going to be both fun and maybe a bit controversial, because we're going to share each generation's THE song! We want to thank some collaborators whom we reached out to for help to make this episode come to life. Since we wanted to cover each generation of K-Pop but we ourselves have only been around for about 3 years, we had to reach out to the experts: For Gen 1: Shannon and Angélica over at Ask Me About K-Pop  For Gen 2: Chris and Chan over at CCTV Pops  For Gen 3: Official K-Pop Highway Radio  Thank you all for your contributions! Now we're on the 4th generation of idol groups and things are going more and more global with each passing day. If you're K-Pop curious or just want to dip your toes into the shallow end of the K-Pop swimming pool, this is the perfect podcast for you. It's a great chat packed with loads of interesting facts, and a few laughs too! Kevin's Correction: Seoul Stache: Why is everyone sitting on the floor? I (incorrectly) came to the conclusion during the episode that ‘ondol' (온돌) meant ‘hot stone' heating. I was correct with ‘on' (온/溫) meaning ‘hot', but I forgot that ‘dol' (돌), while meaning ‘stone', is native Korean, while the ‘stone', 'on'(온/突) is Hanja meaning either ‘sudden' or ‘protruding', likely depending on context (and I'm far from a Hanja expert so really don't know). Either way, I was incorrect in my initial assumption.Intro/Outro Music: Eaters, song Tuck's Love Party (eatersmusic2000) https://freemusicarchive.org/music/eaters/an-evening-with-tuck-pendleton/tucks-love-partyhttps://freemusicarchive.org/music/eaters/wives/i-an-not-edibleEmail: podcast@theseoulpatch.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theseoulpatchpodcast/Twitter: https://twitter.com/patch_seoulFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theseoulpatchWebsite: http://theseoulpatch.com

Phew. You can definitely watch all of them for the most comprehensive introduction. When your solo stage during your band's world tour is a cover of a song called "Lookbook", you know you're the fashionista. Key's also designed stage outfits for the group's 2016 tours. But what we mean is that K-pop awards ceremonies lay claim to the entire region in a way that others don’t. For example, the K-pop-dominated Mnet Asian Music Awards, hosted by and largely for the Korean pop industry, has been held outside Korea for almost half its history, and throughout the 2010s. On this week... It's another installment of the Latest & Greatest theme! However, with a twist... Instead of a new song and classic song from a single artist, we are doing covers/remakes matched up with the original versions. It was so fun to put this one together. We have covers and remakes of songs from a wide range of Kpop history. Some originals are recent, while some go as far back as the 1980s. It was also cool to learn that some of my favorite songs were actually remakes of old school korean songs (i.e. Girls' Generation). And we end with a special mash up of this concept where the artists covering the song actually collaborates with the original artist. So hopefully this one tickles your fancy and who knows, maybe you'll find out that one of your favorite Kpop tracks is actually a remake and get to hear a different rendition of it. Enjoy! This week, we say "anyong haseyo" as we dive into fans of Korean Pop (K-Pop)... in Brazil?? Why is it so popular there, of all places? And what is it about this unique musical style? Is it riding out the Korean Wave?? Next week, our final episode of the season, takes us to fans of something a bit more global: Fans of cosplay! ## Episode outline ### Fandom Facts **Origins:** Korean pop, abbreviated to 'K-pop', is a musical genre that originates in South Korea. The term is often used to describe a modern form of South Korean pop music drawing inspiration from a range of styles and genres around the world. K-pop's origins begin in the late 1980s and early 1990s with groups such as Seo Taiji and Boys being among the earliest in 1992. > The French Institut national de l'audiovisuel defines K-pop as a "fusion of synthesized music, sharp dance routines and fashionable, colorful outfits." ... Songs typically consist of one or a mixture of pop, rock, hip hop, R&B and electronic music genres. > > — [Wikipedia - K-pop](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-pop) There is also a ton of history about K-pop that relates to Japan, and the West, Korean Culture in general, and even _enka_... but we only have a short time to do the research, so we would highly recommend reading more about it! **Fandom Origins:** Modern K-pop idol culture began with the band H.O.T in 1996, and another generation of fans started with TVXQ and BoA which broke into the neighbouring Japanese market (and the world). However, with the advent of social media and Korean TV shows, K-pop and its fandom may just be a small part of the Korean Wave. **Most Active:** For the first time in _Fanthropological's_ history, the answer to the question "when was this fandom most active" is _now_. Since January 2004, interest in K-pop (using [Google Trends](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F02yh8l) as a proxy) is the highest it has ever been and has been on a huge trend upwards since approximately January 2010. Interest is still rising, those it has been less dramatic of an increase in interest since approximately March 2012 (For reference, _Gangnam Style_ debuted on Youtube in July 2012). **Fandom Demographics:** Thank goodness for fans! The [kpop subreddit has conducted a census](https://www.reddit.com/r/kpop/comments/55g79h/reddit_kpop_census_2016_results/) which gives us an interesting (if rough sense) of the fandom demographics of North American K-pop fans. Based on this data (and that caveat): - Age: The majority of fans are between 18-24 (61.5%), with the next largest group being fans aged 25-34 (20%) and fans aged 13-17 (15.6%) - Gender: The majority of fans from this survey are male (56%) compared to female (42.6%) - Ethnicity: The majority of fans are Asian (46%), Caucasian (44.5%), or Hispanic (8.4%) However, a Master's student, Maur-Anne Griffonnet-Barge, conducted a survey as part of her thesis and may give a [more 'global' dataset](http://beyondhallyu.com/k-pop/what-are-k-pop-fans-like-according-to-this-survey-theyre-actually-pretty-cool/): - Age: The majority are age 19 or younger with a close second being fans age 20-29 - Gender: Differing from the reddit survey, the vast majority identify as female - Ethnicity: The majority of respondents were white, with the next largest group being fans who are Asian. While it is difficult to estimate the number of fans, the Hallyu (Korean Wave) index, [gives a conservative estimate of 35 million "hardcore" fans of Korean Pop Culture worldwide](https://www.quora.com/How-many-Kpop-fans-are-there-in-the-world-divided-into-America-Europa-Asia-Africa-Australia-and-South-America) and there are 60 million registered Hallyu fan club members in 109 countries. Assuming K-pop is a subset of that, it would still put K-pop fans in the millions. **Around the world:** We know that K-pop has gained some popularity around the world, but using the same google t
