Adele wrote it with Tobias Jesso Jr., who produced it with Shawn Everett. The song became available as the album's 11th track on 19 November 2021, when it was released by Columbia Records. A torch ballad, "To Be Loved" has piano instrumentation and sets Adele's echoey vocals over minimalistic production. Several publications included it in their list of the best songs of 2021. It reached the top 40 in Australia, Canada, Sweden, and the United States and entered the charts in some other countries. Today, I'm having a GAS with Shawn Everett, a six-time Grammy Award-winning producer and mix engineer. I genuinely believe that Shawn is one of the architects of the sound of pop music between 2010 and 2020. Not that his career ends in 2020, just to say that the huge, deep, wide and saturated sound of that decade is certainly exemplified by his productions. -- After graduating high school, Everett was accepted as a Work-Study participant in the Audio program in Music & Sound at The Banff Centre, Alberta. He took the opportunity to immerse himself in unconventional audio practices over the following four years, experimenting in the campus studios and working on sonic installations. Everett relocated to Los Angeles in 2005 and expanded his industry network through producer Eric Valentine. He began engineering for producer Tony Berg, former A&R executive for Geffen Records and Virgin Music. Hailed in 2017 by Pitchfork as “indie rock's new go-to sound engineer”, Shawn Everett has infused his creative flair into records by a multitude of renowned artists including Weezer, John Legend, Phantom Planet, Blake Mills, Perfume Genius, Haim, Warpaint, Grizzly Bear, The Killers, and Beck. -- Having a GAS™ is the podcast that talks to the great and the good of the creative industries, and in particular finds out what makes great music for film, for TV, for advertising; for dancing to, for cooking to, f*cking to, and more... -- GAS™ Music is a music production agency in Manchester, UK. We compose and produce original music, create awe inspiring sound design and have a fully integrated audio post-production studio. We also have a great record collection, and welcome any additions, recommendations or criticisms. -- http://www.gasismusic.co.uk -- © GAS™ Music 2022

This week, I want to revisit one of my favorite episodes of Song Exploder, with Perfume Genius telling the story of making Slip Away. This episode originally came out in May 2017. The album the song's from, No Shape, went on to be nominated for a Grammy, and was named one of the year's best in lots of places. And next week, on March 16, Perfume Genius will be playing at the Song Exploder Stage at SXSW. I'm really excited to be putting on a showcase at the festival, and the other artists playing will be Kimbra, Sarah Kinsley, Fly Anakin, and Jenny Owen Youngs. For more information about the show: songexploder.net/sxsw - Mike Hadreas has been making music under the name Perfume Genius since 2008. In May 2017, he put out his fourth album, No Shape to widespread critical acclaim. In this episode, Mike breaks down the song Slip Away. I also spoke with producer Blake Mills, who also plays on the track, and recording engineer Shawn Everett about the unusual way the song was recorded. For more, visit songexploder.net/perfume-genius

I've known this multi platinum renaissance man for some time now and I could tell, when we worked on the Lianne La Havas song “Green and Gold” that his skills went WAY beyond the technical. I can safely say that were it not for his expert manner in the room, that song never would have made it. Those are the kind of experiences that stay with you. It came as no surprise to later learn he's worked on records by Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Mary J. Blige, Common, The Strokes, Robert Glasper, and Erykah Badu. Yep he's rather nasty at mixing and producing. He's also taken a large role in producing work by badass bands like Battles and Die Antwoord. We nerd dive into a wide pool of topics from coffee to the holiest of Mics.. He has one in his possession that has THE most incredible back story. We crossed paths so often on tour in the following months that it just made sense to do a collaboration and full US co-headlining tour the following year. The dates were all planned for Fall 2020 and we had studio time booked in Nashville for the three of us in March, but it all came to a screeching halt with the initial outbreak of COVID-19. As everything around us shut down, we forged through and wrote “Freedom” together on Zoom, finished the recording from our home studios without ever stepping in the same room, and now we are finally getting together to play it live, streamed from Brooklyn Bowl Nashville + Fans.com on Friday, November 13th!Tickets are available for purchase now on a donation-based system, with GA tickets available starting at $10. Focused around the alchemic collaboration and camaraderie between members Jeff Gorman (lead vocals, guitar, synth pedals he plays with his feet) and Jake Cochran (vocal harmonies, stand-up drum kit) and recorded with producers Vance Powell (Jack White, Kings Of Leon, Chris Stapleton) and Adrian Olsen (Foxygen, Natalie Prass), the album is part soaring indie rock, part swirling psychedelia, part atmospheric folk and — alongside critically acclaimed performances their summer at Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, and Lollapalooza — signaled their triumphant arrival as an emergent musical force. At the top of 2020, the duo was named to NPR’s “Slingshot Artists to Watch,” with the outlet highlighting the duo’s “energetic live shows,” during which the two play “a full band’s worth of instruments.” NPR also highlighted the group in their “Best Songs of 2019 (So Far),” declaring their single “Carolina Lorelai” to be “an explosive mission statement from a band that’s here to stay.”Alongside critical acclaim from Billboard (“a reverent and downright hypnotic experience”), Uproxx (“a refined vein of My Morning Jacket / Band of Horses-style Americana”), and Relix (5 Artists You Should Know), the album was also met with success at radio – with multiple tracks off Illiterate Light cracking the Top 10 of the Adult Alternative (AAA) charts. The duo kicked off a North American headline tour at the end of January – playing to sold out rooms in Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, and an enraptured crowd at Brooklyn’s Rough Trade. This followed heavy touring in 2019 with Rainbow Kitten Surprise and The Head And The Heart. High-energy audio and video from these headline shows were released throughout 2020 as part of the duo’s “In The Moment” live series. While the series began pre-lockdown, it took on significant meaning in recent months, becoming a tribute to the power of the live performances and the community formed during the duo’s shows, leading SPIN to declare: “The promising Virginia-based duo has an ambition that is promising at a time when rock needs it.”ABOUT DEVON GILFILLIAN:Devon Gilfillian’s debut album, Black Hole Rainbow, was released by Capitol Records earlier this year. It includes his top 5 AAA radio hit, “The Good Life,” a rallying cry for inclusion. Streams of “The Good Life” skyrocketed after Gilfillian performed the song on “CBS This Morning Saturday.” The collage-style lyric video for the song incorporates images that Gilfillian captured in Nashville over the summer, during the BLM protests.American Songwriter hailed “The Good Life” as “[a] soul-soothing ode to finding peace and beauty in life.” The Tennessean hailed Black Hole Rainbow as “one of the best albums released this year, period.” The album also won a spot on Iowa Public Radio’s list of “The Best New Albums (So Far) Of 2020.” The New York Times said, “Devon Gilfillian, a soul songwriter based in Nashville, made his formidable debut album, ‘Black Hole Rainbow,’ with Shawn Everett…warping vintage sounds toward something deep and strange.”Gilfillian performed the national anthem at NASCAR 2020 on the day they banned the Confederate flag. He also recently launched The Good Life Fund, which supports organizations that are doing good in the world, including Give A Note Foundation and Rebuilding Together Nashville. Gilfillian has played numerous festivals, including Newport Folk and Montreal Jazz. My guest today is Shawn Èverett, a Juno and Grammy-winning Canadian producer, engineer, previously a guest on episode RSR137. In that interview, we talked with Shawn about his background schooling and his production and mixing philosophies.  He has worked with many great artists including Grammy-winning Alabama Shakes, Weezer, Margaret Glaspy, Pete Yorn, Warpaint, John Legend, The Killers, Julian Casablancas, and The Voidz, Kesha, Har Mar Superstar, Local Natives, and many many others. In 2019 he won his fifth Grammy for mixing Kacey Musgraves Golden Hour which included songwriting and production from Daniel Tashian and engineering from Craig Alvin both previous guests on the show as well. You can hear their episodes at RSR176 and RSR232. I’ll have these links in the show notes. I have also become a huge fan of Sound & Color by the Alabama Shakes which Shawn engineered and mixed winning a Grammy in 2015. I feel like this record has set the bar pretty high for my own mixes. Welcome to 64. 128 weeks of the pod :) This time I'm in the company of two fifth of the band local natives. I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with these 5 fine fellows many moons ago, somewhere in Ireland. A bland, underwhelming festival that we both remember as such. We had afternoon slots. It was grey. The food was grey. So the contrast of this mini reunion was stark in the most pleasant ways.  Nestled in a secluded sanctuary, up a rambling incline somewhere in sunny LA, I caught up with Ryan and Kelcey.  It was on the 11th day of the 11th month of 2019 at 11 am! Triple 11s.  The chats took in the nature of extended band existence as we explore what it takes to play the long game. We chat of the mystical album making process in a satisfyingly deep yet jovial fashion and I can see that making music with these guys would be a blast.  Their last album was produced by friend of the pod, Shawn Everett. The master of play, the master of effort over convenience.  It's a Shawn love fest after a spell and rightfully so.  Hope you enjoy this deeply pleasant hour and a bit I got to share with this fine fraction of the wonderful band that is Local Natives! ____________________ Music for this episode comes from far far away.  It's songs from an EP called “fishing from an asteroid” by PlaneFace aka Daniel Pliner.  Just amazing work. Such a great grasp of the sound and flow. Damn. I was super impressed by this stuff. Here's a link for your listening pleasure: Fishing from an Asteroid by PlaneFace _______________________ Nitty sees me all clustered up. Shawn Everett is one of the most in-demand and hardest-working production minds in music today. His skills as a recording engineer, producer, and mix engineer have been put to use on records by The War on Drugs, Weezer, Lucius, Alabama Shakes, Perfume Genius, Kacey Musgraves, John Legend, Kurt Vile, and Vampire Weekend to name just a handful. Along the way, he’s garnered a boatload of Billboard Number One Albums, Juno Awards, and Grammys. He’ll tell us the story of the life journey that has taken him from growing up in small-town Alberta – to having the world beat a path to his door in L.A. It’s a story that, along the way, involves an artist enclave on the top of a mountain, a former boy band star, ninjas, tuning chairs into musical instruments, and a lengthy series of mentorships – being taken under the wing of a succession of amazing production minds.

Rob and Seth talk about the current incarnation of Mike Gordon, and its superb Spring Tour 2019-opening show before tossing to an in depth interview. Scott Murawski, Robert Walter and John Kimock join the hosts at Atlanta's Diamond Street Studios and they quickly find themselves discussing the producing brilliance of Shawn Everett, and how it was vital to the unique feel of Ogogo. Live performance is discussed at length, and Scott talks about how Mike encourages the band to, "push the envelope as far as sound goes and as far as improvisation goes" and Robert relates about how exploring synthesizers and the textures they create with Mike Gordon has directly influenced his 20th Congress work and vice-versa. Scott talks about how he sometimes likes to, "play things in a way that encourages people to think 'I could do that'" after which Walter leads into a conversation about improvisational exercises and the importance of "rudeness" with regard to creating compelling music in the moment. John Kimock explains some of his thinking behind his own approach to improvisation, and to his solo work some of which is with his father, legendary guitarist Steve Kimock. Also discussed are mid-tour musical adjustments, the interactive elements of Mike Gordon (the band) tours and how much fun they are having with the plethora of unrecorded songs specific to Mike Gordon (the band). Scott responds to Rob's suggestion that Max Creek bassist John Rider was a huge influence on Mike Gordon (the person), brings forth his early memories of Mike and band mate Trey Anastasio watching Max Creek from the front row, offers his opinion on an old Phish myth, talks about how horn players influenced him, his recent writing with Mike and spin on the Joni Mitchell "Kill Mommy Syndrome." A discussion about Robert's first pedal leads first to The Police and Bob Marley and in turn about how the "embrace of the economy of parts" was a significant influence on Robert as a musician. Each of these fantastic musicians updates the listener on their own solo projects, and then Seth and Rob offer their own closing thoughts. Late in the episode there are also COMPLETE live versions of Mike Gordon and Robert Walter's 20th Congress songs. Even if you don't know the name Shawn Everett, it's very likely that you've enjoyed an album that he's produced, engineered, or mixed in the past several years. In 2015, he rose to prominence for his work on Alabama Shakes' Sound + Color, possibly the best-sounding rock record of the decade, which garnered him two Grammys. Everett won his third Grammy earlier this year for The War On Drugs' A Deeper Understanding, an album he helped to construct with Adam Granduciel in some of the finest studios in Los Angeles and New York City.  Everett's resume doesn't stop there — his recent clients run the gamut of indie rock, pop, and country, including Grizzly Bear, John Legend, Perfume Genius, Kesha, The Killers, Hinds, Mike Gordon, The Voidz, and Kacey Musgraves. But no matter who he works with, Everett applies a personal aesthetic that melds the best of traditional recording techniques with big-eared adventurousness that always feels modern.  I invited Everett on the podcast to talk about his recent experiences in the studio, and to also help clarify the mysteries of record production. Fans love to talk about how records sound, do we really know what we're talking about? What exactly does a producer or engineer do, aside from simply pressing the "record" button and capturing what musicians perform naturally? Everett provides a lot of insight into his process, while speaking in terms that anyone can understand.

Last month I wrote about The Baker's Dozen, an historic run of 13 concerts at Madison Square Garden in which the long-running jam band Phish played more than 200 songs without any repeats. It was a blast to watch unfold. When I was offered an interview with Mike Gordon -- Phish's bassist and the cover model for my favorite Phish album, "Billy Breathes" -- I jumped at the chance. Last week, Gordon released a new solo LP, "OGOGO", that was produced by Shawn Everett, who also worked on recent albums by The War On Drugs and Grizzly Bear. We also talked a lot about The Baker's Dozen and "metaphysical" experience of playing music.
