Today's guest began his career as a musician but worked his way behind the scenes, managing some of the biggest tours on the planet. Welcome Larry McNeny. He's just released a book about his career as a tour manager called Blood, Guts, and No Glory. Larry discusses his early aspirations to become a rock star, his encounters with musicians including Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and the Bee Gees, and his work managing tours for various bands. He detailed his experiences managing Eric Clapton's early tours, including memorable moments like touring Europe on a train with Eric Clapton and Muddy Waters, working behind the scenes for The Band's final show, which became The Last Waltz. He also shared stories about managing the Bee Gees on their world tours, working with Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne (including planning their Maui wedding).  Larry also talks about his philanthropic work, his many writing projects, and a whole lot more. This ais a fascinating look behind the scenes of some huge tours of the 70's, 80's, and 90's. And I want to thank our mutual friend, the incredible Mr. Simon Davies, formerly of Teen Cancer America, for connecting us. Check out Larry's book on TCU Press. Why “Buy-In” Fails—and What Leaders Should Do Instead with Simon Davies

This episode is a practical deep dive into how organisations actually change—not just talk about it. Simon Davies (20+ years in org design across Europe and North America) breaks down why most “transformation” efforts fail, and what leaders should do instead. The core idea: You have two choices when leading change—force compliance or build commitment. Simon argues that while top-down decisions feel faster, they create a long tail of resistance. A collaborative approach may feel slower upfront, but leads to faster, smoother execution because people support what they help create. The conversation explores: Why “buy-in” is a flawed concept How to involve people without losing control What an operating model actually is (in plain English) The real signs your organisation needs redesign How to structure change so it doesn't become chaos If you're leading a team or organisation and feeling friction, misalignment, or stalled progress—this episode gives you a practical lens to rethink how change happens. @functionly @orgdesignpodcast www.functionly.com

We don't know where you grew up or where you call home, but we're from Stoke-on-Trent. Oatcakes, Port Vale, the friendliest and funniest people on Earth. Northern Soul and the rave scene. Shelleys, Kinetic, and Golden. And, of course, Wedgwood and Brindley. Have you never heard of it? As a kid, we'd tell people we were from Manchester because everyone knows Manchester, and it's cool. But Stoke? Pah. We're ashamed to say we never sang its praises. But what did we know? We left Stoke for Manchester, seeking our fortune. But that was many years ago. And we've recently returned to the area. We see Stoke with fresh eyes now and proudly tell people that's where we're from. Funny enough, we weren't the only ones with this attitude. Stoke has an unfair reputation, which is absurd given its affectionately known as The Potteries – a creative city that creates art from dirt and is now named the World Capital of Ceramics. But despite its incredible industrial heritage, the local and national news just seems to spout negative stories, and everyone talks about its decline. But one person is hoping to change all that. Simon Davies is an industrial and product designer and co-founder of Protect-a-Pet, a company that sells his inventions worldwide, which help protect cats from the risk of free roaming. Si has big ambitions for the city. He is hugely passionate about the region and believes it's on the brink of a resurgence. A rebirth. Fed up with seeing a place in post-industrial decline and driving past derelict buildings each day on his way to work, he and some others have set up a Community Interest Company called The Teapot Factory to bring people together and drive change. He's also behind a 'netwalking' event called the Teapot Tours, the first of which was attended by a few Chamber of Commerce members and some local artists. The idea was to bring together creatives and business people, something Stoke is famous for. The walks are guided by a local history expert and end at a venue with an interesting speaker or poet. We wanted to find out more about a city with so much potential, a proud history, a talented workforce and a network of local creatives determined to make the Potteries legendary once more. Today's guest is a reminder to always do your best. It's Britt Lightning, guitarist for Vixen. Her journey to playing guitar really began after hearing Eruption in a shop and buying Van Halen albums that same day. She started playing guitar in a high school with no music program. But it DID have a guitar club. But she was the only girl and wasn't exactly welcomed with open arms. But she was dedicated and eventually became club president. She learned a lot of Metallica riffs and playing them in a guitar shop led to joining her first band and going on tour while still in high school, after some careful parental scrutiny. After that experience, she started her first all-female band. She recruited her sister on drums and they made their debut as the halftime show for a high level sporting event that I can't name in the intro. All of that led to the band Jaded, which was truly a family affair. Her sister was playing bass while her parents manned the merch table and became roadies. After Jaded ceased, she auditioned for Lady Gaga. While she didn't get that gig, it did lead to other amazing opportunities like touring the world with 4x Grammy & 22x Latin Grammy winner Alejandro Sanz. That is a wild story in itself and Britt tells it here. It also led to playing with Jason Derulo and touring with Rachel Platten. All of this led to her role as guitarist for the legendary band Vixen. But she does a lot more than just shred on classic metal. She is also a director for Rock And Roll Fantasy Camp. Britt explains what her duties are for the camp and how that led to an association with Teen Cancer America. This was such a fun discussion. I owe a huge thank you to Simon Davies of Teen Cancer America for the introduction. So make sure you follow everyone in this discussion.
