As we read this passage we're watching a new era begin. The relationship between God's Spirit and His people has changed forever. Never before had the Holy Spirit been able to live inside the sin-contaminated bodies of believers. Never before was such intimacy with God possible to all of God's people, not just a special few. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross, and His resurrection from the dead and His ascension into heaven radically changed things. His death actually cleansed our bodies and made them a suitable dwelling place for God. Now He is able to live inside us, and as you might expect when He arrives it produces some remarkable changes. The first thing that happened on that Day of Pentecost was that each disciple began speaking in a language he or she had never learned. Luke says they spoke words which the Spirit gave them to speak out. Never before had there been such a miracle. There are numerous examples in the Old Testament of the Spirit coming upon people with the result that they spoke out prophetically in their own language, but never in a new, unlearned language. Why would God do such a thing? Many conflicting answers have been given to this question, but Peter actually gives us his own, inspired, explanation. He says it's a sign of the last days. He says it's a fulfillment of Joel's prophecy. Let's look more closely at this miracle of speaking in other languages.

Sermon Series: Better
Poet and philosopher Jennifer Michael Hecht shares how poetry provides joy, insight, and wisdom. In her latest book, “The Wonder Paradox: Embracing the Weirdness of Existence and the Poetry of Our Lives,” Hecht ponders our need for the sacred, and says that seeking out a poem or verses that speak to our daily challenges in life can become a kind of secular replacement for faith. Later, Hecht openly talks about her bouts with depression and offers hope to those reckoning with suicidal ideation.
Peters's first sermon was to a group of confused people who just witnessed spiritual language. The first thing he does is take them back to the Word because any spiritual reality will always be proven through God's Word.

In this fourth installment focused on God Talk: The Manipulative Use of Spiritual Language, Paul and Brandon begin to discuss some possible remedies. Specifically, they note the importance of confronting with questions. By doing so, a means of accountability is engaged that will challenge individuals to be more self reflexive about the experience of “hearing the Lord."
In this third session focused on God Talk:The Manipulative Use of Spiritual Language, Brandon and Paul share about another price tag, or negative effects. Specifically, they discuss the abuse of power that often results from God Talk and wisdom and patience are needed to discern such scenarios.
Welcome to season 2 of the Determined to Dance podcast. I pray that you'll be uplifted, encouraged, and will move forward each and every day. Today's episode, Praying in the Spirit, focuses on prayer and the Holy Spirit. Show Notes: Praying in the Spirit After thirty-seven episodes of prayer, you have probably figured out that I love to pray. To talk to God about anything and everything. He is truly the only one who totally “gets” me: my quirks, my weirdness, my pain, my joy. I don't know how I would get through one day without talking to my Father. I found through my study that the term “Praying in the Spirit” means a lot of different things to different people. Especially among various denominations. In Ephesians 6:18, Paul says: “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” NLT Jacob Gregory said, “No human can pray without divine help.” I agree that we can do nothing in and of ourselves. We need God every second of every day. Praying in the Spirit is basically God enabling us to pray through His Spirit. I found three ways to pray in the Word: In your native language. In a spiritual language. In groanings too deep to utter. Here are scriptures I found to support this: “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.” Romans 12: 10-13 NKJV “Well then, what shall I do? I will pray in the spirit, and I will also pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit, and I will also sing in words I understand.” I Corinthians 14:15 NLT “Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Romans 8:26 NKJV “Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy and do not forbid to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order.” I Corinthians 14: 39-40 NKJV My times in prayer are deeply personal and uplifting to me. I want to be as close to God as possible while on this earth and look forward to an eternity spent with Him. I don't understand life as much as I would like to but I know God loves me and is even pleased with me. Years ago, I thought of God more as a judge than a Father. I know now that He is both and his judgment is tempered with mercy. I really can't wait until the day when we will really know Him: “For now, we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.” I Corinthians 13:12 NKJV I'll leave you with this thought. When comparing prayer in one's native language or a prayer language, Jack Hayford says, “Each form of prayer is at a different dimension, and neither should be described as “less than.” How can the Grand Canyon and the Swiss Alps be compared? It's impossible and unnecessary to do so. Rather, be it languages we employ or creation we behold, let us all be humbled before all manifestations of His Majesty's glory. Let us rise together to praise the Creator of all prayer as readily as we worship the Creator of all things. To do so is to be open to experiencing the enjoyment and the blessing available in exploring the dimensions to which each realm invites us.” From The Beauty of Spiritual Language. Let's pray: Father God, we thank You for the Holy Spirit and the gifts He bestows on Your children. We love talking and singing to You in all ways and forms. You are good and love each of us as individuals, and that is amazing. We are never a number but are chosen, accepted, and deeply loved. You are awesome beyond words. In Jesus' name, we pray, amen.

In this new series of Soul Stirrings, Paul is joined by a co-host, Brandon Knight of William Carey University, to discuss God Talk and the manipulative uses of spiritual language. Many Americans can easily recount some of the historic atrocities committed by Christians in the “name of God." But God Talk is also used in less atrocious, yet still manipulative, ways in everyday communication with family and friends, clients and co-workers. After some basic definitions are offered, several examples of God Talk will be analyzed in hopes of discovering solutions that seek to honor the name of God as well as the agency of our neighbors.
Our message title is, "Spiritual Language." We are talking in this sermon about the privileged benefit of the Holy Spirit Baptism that the Bible calls "speaking with tongues." Acts 2:29–36 (NIV84) 29 “Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” ' 36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” I.) Yet, many Christians today have been given into fear and passivity. It's time for a change, these are the answers as to why so many Christians are struggling so desperately to find their place in the Kingdom.Alright, Rick, hey, great to have you, Rick. A good friend of mine and just one thing on your bio. is you know, you've got Mr. Biloxi Vox is it Biloxi box? How do you say bluesy, bluesy Vox, you are a blues artist?Well, I'm considered Yeah, vocally, I go there a lot, came up through the r&b ranks, and in on grew up, you know, through the clubs and did the circuit and then the constants are good in blah, blah, blah. And my roots always come out in a lot of this stuff. I write and record and produce and perform 40 years in the business. You've seen a lot, I'm sure well, over actually. Quite a bit. Or you're still a young guy. I like it. Yeah, yeah, stop. With the girl do stop bringing it up. Like, I'm glad you accept this invitation, sit down and talk a little bit about the sacred place, but especially what we're going through in this day and age. And just for those watching. This is my closet. This is where my clothes are nothing fancy. But this is my secret place, a place that I commune with God that I see it and listen and look to hear from what he says work. And so, you know, hey, wherever you can find a place to hear God. Quietly without distractions. Go do it. That's what the Bible says. And that's what I'm doing. So what we're talking about today, is how God is speaking to his people. As they're in the secret place as they're spending time with the Lord. And what is he saying during this time of quarantine, if you're viewing this or you're hearing this podcast 20 years from now, or 10 years from now we are in we're in a major quarantine pandemic virus is going on this country in this world? It's pretty much shut down everything except hospitals and grocery stores, and some takeout restaurants. So where we're at in this, I'd like to hear from those that are really seeking after God's heart, in his voice as to what he's saying, you know, all across the globe, actually, whether it's in business, in politics, and government, in church, and religion, and just to hear what he's telling this world. So that's why I brought Rick and, Rick, you've got a couple of books out you've written but the one that I've been reading is the restoration book. And which you wrote back in 2008, I believe 2006 2008. And just the first chapter. So you, I mean, it's like I'm reading, something you wrote that long ago, is like spot on today that we're dealing with. So what is God saying to you right now, in this in this time, we're in what's been saying to you about personally, and then saying to the church, and then saying, what do we need to do out of that? Well, I know that's a lot of questions. You may repeat. fine. Yeah, no, I, I am dragging my knuckles into the 21st century. So you might have to meander back in here. Seriously. You know, the main thrust of where we are right now, a lot of there's a lot of commentaries, a lot of prophetic guys out there. saying it's this, it's that it means this it means that and some are on and I'm sorry that summer, you know, just doing fluff and but, you know, let me put it this way. When Jesus you know, when he was 12 he went into the temple, right and chided and exposed and humiliated that fat cat theologians hanging around the temple at that time, with revelation way over their heads and they were astonished. Well, he, you know, he went home and he realized what I've got a hold, you know, for the rest of his until he was 30 he might as well been holding a full braided bridle of 12 Clydesdales that wanted to run, you know, all the revelation wisdom and zeal you can imagine why it says, the zeal The Lord has consumed. And he had to hold that in till he was 30 Well, when he came out, you know, he went into the wilderness to be tempted when he came out of the wilderness, you would think, to start his formal ministry, who would think the first thing out of his mouth would be pretty, pretty heavy on his heart and the main thrust of what he where he was going to go with the first thing he said out of his mouth was repent. And, you know, that's an archaic word to us today. You say repent to the average person and they in the go different places it mentally but the general you know, subconscious imagery is on, you know, dirty homeless guy with a big placard walking back and forth in front of City Hall or something right, movies have done good for breaking that habit. Oh, yeah. And so they've relegated that to, you know, something irrelevant to our culture. And it's the most relative, I mean, the relevant thing we, we need to do it well, so anyway, that's the big picture. And why would he lift his hand of protection? why that's big question. You know, like, why did he live to lift his hand of protection? And, you know, he's always done that. You know, the Bible, the Old Testament says, These things were written for our admonition upon I mean, New Testament says these things were written referring to the Old Testament these things were written for our admonition upon whom the ends of the world have come so what it's really saying there is that hey, you're supposed to learn from our mistakes and any over and over redundantly he dealt with Israel this way. You know, he would bless Israel so heavy, they would get distracted. busy. self-centered, self-focus, myopic, right? Like I always say it it's easy to kill a whitetail deer from trees dang they never look up. Right? Yeah. And that's you know, and so, Mister what I call Mr. Damage Satan. He's, he's up in that tree, you know, and most people are just, they're just going about their business, fixing this and making that being somebody replaces Ah, spiritual warfare in higher places. Yeah, he's up there. You know, and I, in one of my recent videos, on one of my other channels, I mentioned that, you know, when Satan fell, you know, well, let me back up and say, you know, people will say, Well, yeah, what's going on right now is Satan's getting kicked out there's war in heaven and Satan getting kicked out of the third heaven? No, no, he was already kicked out of the third. He's when he fell he he said they set up in the second heaven because there's a they could block the prayers of the saint and set up stronghold now. For those that might not follow that talking point, I guess, are just the three types of heaven. Heavens. Yeah, right. Paul mentions that and then second Heaven is where powers and principalities rule. Yes third heaven is where Jesus is.Yeah, okay. And a lot you'd be surprised that many Christians don't have a clue about this right there in front of them the whole time. That's why Paul said we battle not against flesh and blood but against powers principalities, spiritual wickedness and heavenly places. And that last word in the Greek is crowd Cosmo crowd ploy. And I you know, it sound important, I just had this fancy seriously, it's all Greek for all these years. But seriously, and this is hardly the time for levity with what's going on on the planet. So I have to watch myself. I'm a combat veteran, I found out humor helps keep the troops morale up. But so David said, when i sin, the heavens became like bread. Right. So if we break the communications God can't get through because he's delegated While he, ultimately he can, of course, you know, lift his hand and protection, but what we're looking at is God is delegated free will to us, because we have responsibility. We're being groomed to rule and reign with Christ. So we have a privileged mandate to bring those strongholds down. Right in the second half. That's what Paul is talking about. Right? He says, you know, we, we, after he says that about tearing down the stronghold, you know, and everything that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. Right. So that's part of our mandate is to bring all that down. And of course, people say, Well, if Satan was completely defeated at the cross, right, how come the devil is alive and well in my neighborhood? Yeah, good question. Like, why was there a snake in the garden? We're not gonna go there. I can break that down. I do that in my first book. But the point is, God gave is so wise. He did two things. He's grooming us to rule and reign with Christ forever. Right. So this is our privileged participation in the fight. This is our training ground. Yes, it's an apprenticeship. And a guy named Paul Billheimer, one of the brilliant theologians Paul Billheimer wrote a book many years ago. And he will he wrote, several, you know, don't waste your sorrows. And But anyway, that's what he addresses is, this is our apprenticeship, right? destined for the throne is the is the book. And it's amazing. And so we have this privilege of tearing down these strongholds there, you know, it's like a map of operation. That's what spiritual warfare is, is about, well, if you buy into fear, you step out of out of faith, you step out of faith and faith, that which is not a faith, it's sin. And of course, there's grace. You know, as we grow through learning how that work. There's a lot but lots of fear in this world right now. Oh, man, and that's why I'm going on I know, And so, but But anyway, so what's happening right now is very pragmatic, really, spiritually and tangibly, we're supposed to be on our knees doing what is called identification of repentance. As John Dawson in his book, "Taking our cities for God" wrote, identification, repentance is we are identifying with the sins of our nation, which are many. And we're asking the Lord to forgive us. We're repenting and behalf of our nation, to bring us back to where we were when at our inception. You know, I can prove to you that we were a Christian nation, or that's a popular thing right now. Oh, yeah. Nobody, nobody wants to hear that.Well, what's amazing, your God is calling us to repent, at the same time. The other side is beating the daylights out of Christianity and marriage and, and those foundational principles that we believe in. And it's through media, it's, I mean, we see it, you can't turn the television on without feeling like you know, being a Christian is a bad thing, or being wealthy is a bad thing or, or believing that marriage is is the right way to go, man, woman only and that's a bad thing. So yeah, there's definitely a war going on, too. It's a cultural war. And the way from what I see, but you know, we're fighting two types of wars. You know, we got the spiritual part, but we also have where we're on the earth, trying to do good.Yeah, yeah. Well, it always, you know, ends up on terra firma. whatever is going on in this in the heavenly will manifest here. Very few people ever put that together. They don't press in far enough to breakthrough.Explain that just a little bit deeper. You know, CS Lewis. Right. First time you read the New Testament before he got you know, saved. He said, Oh, I see. The universe is at war. Right. And Churchill, he saw the connection. Churchill. Why would he quote, what we've been talking About here in Ephesians, as the allies are crossing the channel to go invade Normandy and World War Two, he quoted we battle not against flesh and blood, but against power of principalities, spiritual wickedness in heavenly places. Well, why it sounds like he's, he's endorsing nonphysical combat. In other words, it, you know, it sounds like a contradiction. Well, what he was saying is now we're going to the source baby. They knew, yeah, me people don't know this. Hitler was in radically into the occult. I'm talking Satan. He had necromancy going on to add human bones in the rituals, all of that's historically documented. And many and many of his cadre were involved in. And so he, he, he had the spirit of the world. And the devil himself helping him to sail take over the planet. Sounds familiar? It sounds for me. Yeah. And, yeah, so the bottom line is they knew what they were dealing with. So in answer to that, you know, we're, we're in a war, Satan hates your guts wants to kill you. Yeah, that sounds trite. And but this is real. This is real combat. And it's actually a privilege to be involved. You, you say it's kind of trite. But that, you know, when you read the word, and it says, we're in a spiritual battle, I don't. I mean, I look at that, and I go, hold on just saying it. Let's you just love this. You set your clocks not to go off and you get a reminder that I got to drink my water. Got a drink of water, so many gallons a day or whatever. Oh, you're on a regimen. Yeah, I'm just trying to be healthy. You know,I got it. Hey, when I said try it, what I meant was that cliche, not what we're talking about, obviously.Well, you know, as I look at that, look at reading that, and experience, this culture we're in you, it really brings it home, when you look at that, and you say this is some of the stuff we're coming against right now. Is so above our heads, that logic can explain it sometimes. And you're like, this is just crazy. And that's what the second book is, I'm trying to reveal in the second book. And so as we as regular Christian, I call them regular Christians, you know, we that when I say regular Christians, this just my own thinking, I got you is that we're kind of like this when I was out at the store, one of the local hardware stores, you had people that were covered with masks and gloves, and just like, thought we were under attack. And then you had other people that were just walking with no protection and people of older age, which are more susceptible to what's going on to the war that's going that's attacking the older people, mainly, they were walking around with no protection, it was kind of like, it was a surreal situation where you had two different worlds in the same space, two levels of fear, two levels of fear. One may have not been fear at all just like yeah, that's what I meant. You know, I was one of those crazies that didn't wear masks and gloves and I'm like, you know, I guess I could be bad for that but at the same time you know, I try not to use religion as any kind of protector but I don't know it's just it's I wasn't going to succumb to the fear that was being perpetrated upon the people to this country you know, that we're seeing really pushed on this country's a spirit of fear on this country has gripped the world and at some point, you look at it you go How much is that is really manufactured fear and how much of it is actually you know, be smart wash your hands, don't cough in people's faces, you know, don't lick your hand and smacks me in the face something you know some stupid just drip just protect yourself because our bodies have to fight off naturally or God creator bodies to fight viruses. No and healthy people can fight the virus and it actually helps them from what I understand is because you create an antibody and you in your body naturally fights it off. It's the people that can't because their immune system and their bodies are struggling. Anyway, did I go off a path there but anyway, it just was it struck me Well,no, it's not. That's not going off the path because What you just touched on is one of the most important things that you can know as a Christian or period. But an unbeliever is not going to even give it credence. So, as as a believer, let me just say, to the body of Christ, that the only weapon I think of this now, the only weapon that the devil have is fear. Now, that doesn't mean you can't use other people against you that are in neutral. You know, if they're, if they don't know the Lord, they're neutral, he can jump in and drive around, try running over, you know, but you know what I'm saying so, so, but the only thing he has is fear. And I'm, this is gonna sound a little over the top, but I am in a way, deal with it. My life has been over the top, I mean, just miracles on miracle. And, in the process, I have had to deal with everything from principalities, to emps in the spirit realm, you know, spiritual warfare on a scale that most people don't even know exists. Even most Christians. discerning a spirit, the real gift not, not the one that a lot of people claim they have in the church. You know, where, anyway, I won't go there. But so, the, you know, I've had, um, come on, and do things come at me and do things that are, you know, in the physical realm. What did Paul mean, when he said he wrestled with demons and emphasis? Will you ask most people, even those Christians to go, Well, he we had issues, we all have issues. That's not what he was talking about. And you'd be surprised what he was talking about. There are physical attacks. I mean, I, I've kept a little survey personal survey going for years about people who have had certain I don't use a word. Well, the same pattern of attacks, physical attacks, from the fall, the fallen ones, it demons. And they all describe the exact same thing. Hundreds of right, yeah, there's, I mean, I've heard that many people, there's one guy I listen to occasionally. I'll think of it in a minute. But he, he talks about that very thing being physically attacked by the demonic.Yeah. And most Christians are so nominal in their, in their, they lack intimacy with God, that's the best way to say it. They lack intimacy with the Spirit of the Lord. Because they just haven't spent time with them. You know, they, they do Christianity and go to church, they're involved in the church, they do stuff in the church. And it's, you know, and they pray they, you know, have a little devotional time and, you know, that kind of thing, but they don't press. There's not a massive encounter. What was the difference between there's a difference between believing and, and even pursuing? But and what you'd the word you used, and that's an encounter, you want an encounter, and you pursue an encounter, eventually, you're going to breakthrough, and he's going to show up, and, you know, he'd blew my little game out of the water. I had a sovereign conversion, I was a criminal. And he showed up. Oh, and it was a whole nother ballgame then.
