When @stevenizen was just 19 years old, his beloved grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, an event that brought him to his personal low in life. It was during this time that Steven founded @lokai - the iconic bracelet brand that encourages people to find hope in their darkest moments. Each Lokai bracelet incorporates water from Mount Everest and mud from the Dead Sea - the highest and lowest points on earth - to serve as a simple daily reminder to remain humble and hopeful through life's inevitable highs and lows. To date, Lokai has given $9M+ as part of its 10% profits to charity pledge, supporting a growing list of incredible organizations like The Humane Society, Alzheimer's Association, The Make-a-Wish Foundation, Stand Up to Cancer, and One Tree Planted. Steven was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 List for Retail and Ecommerce in 2017, was the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards Finalist in 2016, and currently serves as the youngest member on the national board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In this episode, Michael and Steven discuss the highs and lows of being an entrepreneur, what it takes to run a successful business in 2023, and how to avoid burnout.

The 22st episode of this Entrepreneurship at Cornell podcast features Steven Izen '13, founder and CEO of Lokai and Elements. Lokai, the iconic bracelet brand, inspires its community to find balance in life and Izen's newest venture, Elements of Balance, is a functional beverage brand that uses clinically-effective levels of adaptogens to support energy, focus, calm and sleep. Izen talks about the family member who was his inspiration for starting Lokai, how he grew the company and some of the best advice he's ever been given as an entrepreneur.
Today's guest, Steve Izen, is a true inspiration who made his mark on the world by getting everyone around him to follow in his steps and embrace the idea of impermanence. After hearing of his grandfather's Alzheimer's diagnosis, Steve began to toil with the idea of how we are all constantly experiencing highs and lows and the aim is for us to find balance. That seed grew into his company Lokai, a bracelet brand that combines actual water from Mount Everest with actual water from the Dead Sea (the highest and lowest points in the world) to preach the word that life is ever-changing, and one should always seek internal peace and balance in an otherwise chaotic world. We talk about how Steve's idea of success has changed from when he was younger to now, how he thought up Lokai, why many retailers rejected Lokai at the start, and how word-of-mouth was crucial to Lokai's success. We explore the value of community, Steve's hiring process and Lokai's manufacturing process, why Steve prioritizes family and friends over everything else, and the ins and outs of the other company he founded, Elements of Balance. Steve truly is an example of how to work hard, earn well, and give money to charity and time to the people you love. You do not want to miss this remarkable conversation!

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the rat race and forget about what's truly important. For entrepreneur Steven Izen, that means spending his time on the things that will benefit his future self. Izen is the founder of two companies, Lokai and Elements of Balance Brands. He also has a family, so he understands the importance of finding a balance between work and life. When it comes to his businesses, Izen is focused on building something that will last. He doesn't want to simply make a quick buck and move on; he wants to create something that will have a positive impact on the world for years to come. Finding your balance There are a few things that people can do to establish balance in their lives. One is to have a routine and stick to it. This means waking up at the same time every day, eating meals at regular intervals, and getting enough sleep. Another important aspect of balance is making time for yourself. This means taking breaks throughout the day, spending time with loved ones, and doing things that make you happy. Finally, it is important to stay mindful of your thoughts and emotions. This means being aware of what triggers your stressors and learning how to cope with them in a healthy way. Relationships, Experiences, and Perspective Steven said "It's important to give back, because in doing so, you receive far more than just monetary compensation. You gain valuable relationships and experiences, and a new perspective on life." Steven has experienced this first-hand, through both his own charitable work and through witnessing the work of others. He knows that when you help others, you end up helping yourself in the process. The highs and lows of life Stephen is no stranger to the ups and downs of life. Stephen's grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease when he was a freshman in college. This news really impacted him because his grandfather was a huge part of my life. He taught me how to play golf and pool, and he drove me to school every day when he was a little kid. He realized that everyone goes through highs and lows in their life, no matter their age or income level. He started to think about what was important in life and how he could make a difference. The importance of perspective Steven says "It's important to have perspective because it allows you to see the world more clearly. It's easy to get caught up in your own problems or emotions, but when you step back and look at the bigger picture, you realize that there are people who have it worse than you. This perspective can help you appreciate what you have and motivate you to help others who are less fortunate. It can also help you maintain a balanced lifestyle by keeping things in perspective and not getting too caught up in the highs and lows of life." How Steven makes sure that Elements of Balance drinks are effective Elements of Balance puts a lot of emphasis on making sure their products actually work. They can be sure that their product has the same ingredients and doses as what was proven to be effective in those studies. In addition to this, they also conduct consumer research to get feedback on how well the product works for people. This focus on effectiveness has helped elements of balance stand out in a crowded market and build a loyal following among customers who appreciate knowing that their product will actually deliver on its promises. My guest this week is Steven Izen, founder and CEO of Lokai, the iconic bracelet brand infused with elements from the highest and lowest points on Earth. The white beads are infused with water from Mt. Everest, the highest point on Earth. The black beads carry mud from the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. The idea of Lokai came to Steven when his grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The diagnosis made Steven think about the highs and lows that everyone experiences. He wanted to make a product for himself and others as a reminder to stay humble through the highs and hopeful through the lows. 3:59 – Steven 101 Most importantly, he is a father of two and a husband. Secondly, he is an athlete and entrepreneur. He came up with the idea for Lokai as a freshman in college. 5:23 – An early entrepreneur His father and grandfather were entrepreneurs. Steven is into woodworking and had a custom wood pen business in high school. 8:22 – Starting Lokai Steven thought about his own personal highs and lows and how he could make jewelry with the highest and lowest points of the world. His dad told him it was the good idea but said he needed to make it happen. The mud is a lot easier to get. A lot of beauty products are made with mud from the Dead Sea. The water from Mt. Everest took longer to get, and he had to get connected to a climbing group. He employs a team of Sherpa's to climb Mt. Everest, bottle the water and bring it back down. 16:35 – Social media The value in Lokai is to the story that people attach of their own highs and lows. Steven's company tried to learn about people's stories, including celebrities and influencers. 20:50 – Why Lokai? The inspiration for the name Lokai comes from a Hawaiian word that's spelled a little differently. It means unity and blending of opposites. 27:09 – What's next? Steven launched a membership program that gives them different messages about balance. He wants to build more of a community and support system. 27:49 – Lokai promo code We have a Lokai promo code! Go to Lokai.com and use promo code “podcast15” to save 15% off your order. 29:08 – Get to know you What has made biggest impact on him in the past year? His children. Something we'd never guess about him? He loves woodworking. Favorite shows? The Wire and Lost FEATURED QUOTES Stay humble when you're on top of the world and hopeful when you've hit a low. I try to find balance by really putting an emphasis on what's important to me outside of work. The highs and lows of being an entrepreneur are crazy, and if I emotionally lived by those, I'd be a train wreck. My family and my fitness really ground me. Those help to soundproof the craziness of work. https://lokai.com/ Thank you to our partners of the show! Are you looking to clean up your household cleaning products this year? The journey of life is made up of highs and lows, pain and joy, challenges and triumphs. Even at a young age, Steven Izen came to understand this truth that connects all humans. The key to success is figuring out how to find balance in all of life's extremes. Out of this concept, Steven created his brand Lokai. Lokai bracelets serve as a reminder to stay humble on the mountain peaks of life and hopeful in the valleys. More than simply offering consumers an excellent product, Lokai's mission extends beyond retail into mindfulness and active participation in the global community. Izen attributes much of his success to staying focused on his values— fitness, family, and business. As a young leader in a quickly changing world of business, Izen builds relationships with his team with intentionality and isn't afraid to have the hard conversations. Company values are woven into the fabric of every day operations, primarily open communication, work/life balance, and giving back to the community. This is how businesses maintain integrity and support a growth mindset within a company's culture. Main Topics How Izen developed the concept, values, and brand for Lokai and the meaning behind the name (02:16) Izen's personal exploration of mindfulness in leadership (06:30) Current shifts in employer/employee relationships and the importance of balance in the workplace (10:36) How entrepreneurs can be growth-oriented by giving back to community (14:40) Special offer for listeners! Ep. 61: Cornell track and field shaped this entrepreneur. Lokai's brand of beaded bracelets has become a phenomenon sold in 5,000 locations in 170 countries. The bracelets each contain a droplet of mud from the Dead Sea and water from Mount Everest to represent the highs and lows of earth and of life. Steven paid his dues going “door-to-door” around New York City, trying to get stores to display his bracelets, and was rejected 95 percent of the time. Eventually, his hard work (and his discovery by celebrities like Justin Bieber, Cam Newton, and Blake Lively) helped the company turn the corner… and they haven't looked back since. Six years later, he founded his second company Elements, which produces functional wellness drinks formulated to consistently balance the body's stress levels. Listeners are sure to enjoy his descriptions of getting his businesses off the ground as well as the differences and similarities of being a founder versus a CEO, including why the numbers count… but aren't everything, and baking social responsibility into your bottom line. Steven offers a distinctive blend of unwavering confidence and hard-won humility that is sure to inspire and awaken your own creative juices. And one thing's for sure: you'll never look at a baton handoff in a track relay the same way again. “Sometimes you're on top. Stay humble. Sometimes you've hit a low. Stay hopeful.” Steven Izen, founder of Lokai, discusses the business of a balanced life, and why giving back is important. Lokai's core creation is the Lokai bracelet. The white bead is infused with water from Mt Everest, the highest point on Earth. The black bead carries mud from the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. The purchase of each bracelet gives $1 to the cause the bracelet is designed for, and to date, they have given over $8.5 million dollars to the various organizations they partner with, including the Alzheimer's Association.
