Heavy is the head that wears the crown—an adage familiar to all. For chefs, the culmination of aspirations often transforms into a suffocating responsibility. Balancing the delicate dance between creative desires and the day-to-day demands of a profitable restaurant, chefs find themselves assuming the roles of part-time therapists, plumbers, dishwashers, and maintenance personnel. While these daily responsibilities are integral, chefs must elevate their perspective beyond the immediate tasks, recognizing that the traditional role has evolved add our positions as role models and trendsetters require to look at how we can help the evolving world outside of our restaurants. Chef Matt Orlando is an absolute visionary and his work at *the now concluded Amass* in Copenhagen, Denmark, forged the pathway for other chefs to see how they can have a major impact on reducing food waste, thus helping with the needs for action when it comes to the future of our planet. ⚠️ One note before you get to the show, because we are calling international, we had some challenging moments with the technology, so please forgive the less the desirable recording quality. We apologize and will try to be better next time.
Got a question for the trio? https://forms.zohopublic.com/propertyplanningaustralia/form/GotaquestionforthePropertyTrio/formperma/zYCQAxzE_24CVlDafP1ozyzwtmB-8m1iCNtCTgDvHXMA lovely listener, Zak has written in to the the Trio. He and his partner have worked hard as young professionals and have acquired two properties; each with high 80's LVRs. One is a boutique apartment in Melbourne's leafy inner south/east, and the other is a character brick house in beautiful pocket of Ballarat. But despite their strong incomes and dedication to their financial goals, their borrowing capacity has precluded them from further investing for now. The question he has is, "how is it that some individuals (often in their early to mid thirties) are able to amass large portfolios of (say) 10+ properties?"Can it really be done, or is it a mirage? The Trio enjoy unpacking this one. Dave starts with some possible explanations for how these young multi-property portfolio investors manage it, and he also shares some interesting data direct from the ATO about the percentage of multi-property investors. Scarce indeed!"Let's talk about the psyche of someone who wants ten-plus properties". Cate sheds light on what drove her to pursue a quick succession of investment property purchases when she was younger. Mike leads the conversation around ego-metrics too.The Trio challenge some of the mirages out there that investors claim as 'investments', and Cate talks about the headache factor of a large portfolio, particularly when she considers upkeep on interstate holdings.Mike challenges Dave to share some of the alternative financing sources that our listener duo could consider to break past their borrowing capacity constraint. Dave delves into cashflow and buffers, and he talks about risk and where it is relevant when it comes to multi-property investors.Dave and Cate agree on one key ingredient that can certainly optimise an investor's chances of attaining a multi-property portfolio... and it's time.Lastly, our gold nuggets…… Mike Mortlock's gold nugget: Forget the white noise! Just stick to the simple stuff. There's no tricks. Set a plan based on what you want your retirement to look like.Dave Johnston's gold nugget: Work out how much passive income you need for retirement (in rent), work out the total property value you are aiming to purchase, and consider the number of properties that this represents. Shut out the superfluous noise and don't worry about what others are investing in.Cate Bakos's gold nugget: Time is your best ingredient, so don't sit around waiting to jump into property. When you can, you should.Show notes: https://www.propertytrio.com.au/2023/12/11/unravelling-the-mystery-of-how-investors-amass-ten-plus-properties/

Many people are familiar with the United States Supreme Court's merit docket. Each case follows detailed and professional proceedings that include formal written and oral arguments. The justices' decisions provide lengthy arguments and citations. They are freely available to the public, press, policy-makers, law makers, judges, and scholars. When the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, they ruled publicly – and the press covered it extensively. But Professor Stephen Vladeck's new book, The Shadow Docket: How the Supreme Court Uses Stealth Rulings to Amass Power and Undermine the Republic (Basic Books, 2023), highlights that 99% of the Court's decisions are “unseen, unsigned, and almost always unexplained” on the “shadow docket.” State and federal policies – and constitutional rights – are affected by decisions that the Supreme Court makes behind closed doors. There are no opinions, no citations, and often observers have little idea which justices supported the action. The term ‘shadow docket' was coined by law professor William Baude in 2015 – and Professor Vladeck sees a recent, radical, and concerning shift in how the shadow docket has been deployed in recent years. His remarkable book traces the shadow docket's longer history to explain what is the shadow docket, where did it come from, and how the Court has radically departed from past practice to decide more and more cases out of the public eye. Professor Vladeck argues that the shadow docket has become a norm rather than an exception – and that procedural change impacts constitutional rights and public policy on a large scale including asylum eligibility, abortion, marriage equality, voting rights, and building a border wall. Professor Vladeck insists that, regardless of your individual political leanings, the Court's increasing manipulation of the shadow docket threatens our shared constitutional system, and should alarm any American who believes in the value of the Supreme Court as an independent and legitimate institution. Professor Vladeck's impressively researched (and remarkably accessible) book employs historical analysis and case studies in clear and precise prose. This is a book for scholars, students, – and anyone interested in policy and politics. The podcast ends with Professor Vladeck's suggestions for how we can all change how we talk about the Court and how Congress can make the Court more accountable. Professor Stephen Vladeck holds the Charles Alan Wright Chair at the University of Texas School of Law. In addition to his extensive legal scholarship, Vladeck, has argued three cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, co-hosts the National Security Law Podcast, and is editor and author of “One First,” a popular weekly Substack newsletter about the Supreme Court. John Sebastiani served as the editorial assistant for this podcast. Susan Liebell is Dirk Warren '50 Professor of Political Science at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Jordan was one of the pioneers in email transaction data, a lead technologist at a multi-billion-dollar equity fund and was identified as one of New York's top CEOs in the analytics space! Jordan joins The Scale Up Show to talk to Ryan all about his unique perspectives and alternative ideas on leveraging and developing data as well as the growth and expansion of data science in his lifetime and career. KEY TAKEAWAYS Jordan's experience in the hedge fund industry taught him to build personal, strong face-to-face relationships and this is something he has translated into his businesses. Attending events is a strong way to build industry relationships as well as asking to be introduced and referred by colleagues. Amass Insights try and develop a detailed understanding of all the data providers that are out there in the world and decipher which are valuable for an investor. Amass Insights are currently looking into how to use invoice data to predict sales and trends. After working in a traditional hedge fund company, Jordan began to ask himself why they weren't using the data available to them in the ad or marketing space. This question is what started him on his entrepreneurial journey and on to eventually co-founding Amass Insights. Getting to this stage of his entrepreneurial journey wasn't easy. Jordan co-founded two start-ups previously and had to deal with a lengthy and costly lawsuit after creating the second but it helped him build resilience and he learnt a lot of lessons from this low point of his career. A new concept of Jordan's to build growth is ‘Alternative Data Happy Hour' which is a live industry event aimed at potential customers, utilising existing relationships and connections. BEST MOMENTS “Just know the right person, they don't care who you are, as long as you can make a decent case for your data set” “I was the real brains behind the operation and I was not getting compensated for that” “I realised for me to get where I wanted to be in both life and career I needed to have full control over how the company was operated” “We can't be trying to capture a piece of every single deal, we need be connectors and known as the people who have all these relationships and know where the data is” Do You Want The Closing Secrets That Helped Close Over $125 Million in New Business for Free?" There were a few chuckles when Morgan McLachlan launched her first spirit brand, a vodka crafted from California clementines. Yet, while its novelty may have amused some in the beverage alcohol industry, the product represented a foundation for her now acclaimed distilling philosophy, which is focused on botanical-based spirits. The co-founder, chief product officer and master distiller of Los Angeles-based brand AMASS, Morgan describes the company as born out of “a desire for quotidian pleasures made better by plants.” Launched in 2018, AMASS produces a variety of spirits, including its flagship dry gin, and in recent years extended into hard seltzers as well as personal care and beauty products, such as liquid soap, hand sanitizer and candles. Earlier this year, McLachlan introduced De Soi, a line of sparkling ready-to-drink non-alcoholic apéritifs. Co-founded by global pop star Katy Perry, De Soi was designed as a brand for mindful, yet also refined, consumption. The line includes three expressions each made with botanicals like blackcurrant, birch and yuzu and functional ingredients, including reishi mushroom, ashwagandha and maca. In an interview featured in this episode, McLachlan spoke about her transition from a career in the film industry to the spirits business and how the former guided her focus on creative distilling methods. She also discussed how AMASS developed its distinctive branding and positioning, the company's decision to incorporate lifestyle products into its portfolio, how De Soi is an expression of a new phase in her life and the origins of her partnership with Katy Perry. Show notes: 0:42: Interview: Morgan McLachlan, Co-Founder/Master Distiller, AMASS and Co-Founder, De Soi – McLachlan and Taste Radio editor Ray Latif riffed on the latter's pronunciation skills before discussing an industry honor bestowed upon the entrepreneur, exploring Los Angeles' micro-climates and why she decided to distill citrus for her first spirit. She also discussed how she applied her experience growing up in an artistic family into distilling, how blurring beverage categories has impacted drinking culture, how she joined AMASS as a co-founder and helped establish its positioning as both luxury and accessible. Later, she discussed the expansion of the AMASS portfolio, the launch of and roadmap for the distillery's RTD cocktails, why De Soi was established as an independent brand, the formulation of products and how Katy Perry is involved in planning and operations for the upstart company. Brands in this episode: AMASS, De Soi
