Oregon US Sen. Jeff Merkley on Congressional effort to stop dismantling of nearly $400 million ocean monitoring system

On Monday, Oregon Democratic U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley and Alaska Republican U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski led a group of Democratic Senators to urge the National Science Foundation to stop its plans to dismantle a nearly $400 million ocean monitoring network. The Associated Press reported on the letter Sens. Merkley and Murkowski wrote to the NSF, which was signed by nine other U.S. Senators, including Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon and Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell of Washington. More than two dozen Democratic U.S. Representatives signed onto a separate letter, per the AP’s reporting, to warn against the “illegal decommissioning” of the Ocean Observatories Initiative.    The OOI is a network of 900 sensors anchored off Oregon, Washington, Alaska, North Carolina and in the North Atlantic. For more than a decade, the instruments have transmitted real-time data that has helped detect coastal flooding events, manage sustainable fisheries, track marine heat waves and more.  A memo from the NSF posted last month said the “major descoping” is already underway for the array of instruments managed by Oregon State University, with the removal of most of the rest of the network expected to be completed next summer.   Sen. Merkley joins us to discuss his and other Democratic lawmakers’ efforts to protect the OOI, along with other federal issues affecting his Oregon constituents.

CannCon and Chris Paul close out the week with a Friday that ranges from California vote counting to the Ukraine end game. Spencer Pratt's 25,000 vote lead over Karen Bass is evaporating in late mail-in counting, and Chris Paul maps the epistemological trap: the same people who watched this happen in 2022 are going to accept the outcome because by the time it is announced, attention has moved on. CannCon flags the 40% primary turnout surge in LA that cannot be explained by anyone running except Pratt, and notes that Los Angeles is the only county in the United States still using Smartmatic. The GOP civil war produces three separate betrayals in one week: Ukraine aid and Russia sanctions pass the House in defiance of Trump, six senators vote to block the White House ballroom, and Collins, Murkowski, Tillis, and McConnell block the SAVE Act. Chris Paul makes the case that none of it matters because Trump does not need congress for anything he is actually doing. CannCon walks through the June calendar: Section 702 lapsing June 12, SpaceX IPO, disclosure day, Trump UFC, G7, a DC rally on June 24, and Supreme Court decisions all overlapping with an active protest movement. The Hunter Biden cooperating witness theory gets its most complete treatment yet.

You’re listening to American Ground Radio with Louis R. Avallone and Stephen Parr. This is the full show for June 4, 2026. We open with a conversation about Congress's seemingly unlimited capacity for symbolism and its equally limited appetite for actual governance — prompted by the bill to rename the street in front of the Chinese embassy Tiananmen Square Memorial Boulevard. We love the trolling, we love the underlying principle, and we think every Chinese diplomat should have to write that address on their stationery every day. But we also note that the SAVE Act — which 70% of Americans support, including 69% of independents and nearly half of rank-and-file Democrats — is still sitting unactioned. You cannot tell us you can walk and chew gum at the same time if you're only blowing bubbles. In our Top 3 Things You Need to Know, President Trump announced he wants Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch to become the permanent AG — and after overseeing the indictment of James Comey and launching the National Fraud Enforcement Division, we think he's earned it. Then the federal government cut off Hawaii from Medicaid funding after decertifying its Medicaid Fraud Control Unit — a unit that received millions of dollars to fight fraud, produced zero criminal indictments between 2022 and 2025, and watched Medicaid enrollment explode by 40% in the same period. And water began flowing again into the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool — restored for an estimated $13 to $20 million, which is less than half of what the Obama administration spent on a failed repair project that left the pool just as dirty six months later. Our American Mama Teri Netterville responds to the Black Crows concert in Florida where the lead singer told a crowd chanting USA that he didn't understand why they were cheering for this country. Thousands walked out. Teri says she would have been one of them — and explains why the cultural fatigue is real and permanent now. We talk about why woke entertainment keeps failing at the box office, why Snow White bombed, why the all-lesbian Star Trek didn't survive one season, and why Americans are done pretending they'll tolerate being told their country is awful by the people it made wealthy. We dig into the Austin Metcalf murder trial — which CBS News and most of the media are calling the Carmelo Anthony trial, burying the name of the murdered boy seven paragraphs down. We explain why the jury ended up without any Black members — and the answer, straight from CBS News itself, is not that prosecutors were racist. It's that several prospective Black jurors admitted under oath they could not vote to convict a defendant who looked like them, or who looked like a kid, regardless of the evidence. One said he would have a hard time putting a brother in jail. We ask the question nobody wants to ask — if jurors in the other direction had said the same thing in reverse, what would happen? And we ask how many juries have had people on them who felt the same way but didn't say so out loud? The Senate voted to strip the SAVE Act from the reconciliation package — with four Republicans joining Democrats to kill it: Murkowski, McConnell, Tillis, and Collins. We explain why each of them voted the way they did, and we note that 81% of Americans support requiring voter ID and 80% want states to purge non-citizens from voter rolls. This is not a radical idea. It is the will of the American people, and four Republican senators just overruled it. For our Bright Spot, Senator John Fetterman — standing alone again among Senate Democrats — went on record calling out Maine Democrat Senate candidate Graham Plattner over the new revelations about his explicit messaging to women on a platform known for sexual predators. Fetterman said if you've already lied about the Nazi tattoo situation, there are probably a lot more ranches you haven't seen yet. We make the comparison to Alexander Hamilton's endorsement of Thomas Jefferson — I may disagree with his principles, but at least he has them. We also cover the Israel-Lebanon-Hezbollah ceasefire framework — and explain why the big if in that deal is Hezbollah, which has never wanted peace with Israel and still doesn't. And we close with Sterling Nassa, who was sitting in the audience at a live orchestra performance of La La Land in Sydney when the pianist came down ill at intermission. The conductor walked out and asked if anyone in the house could play. Sterling was a trained pianist and an accomplished sight reader. He walked up, sight read the second half of the concert, including a complicated piano solo, and saved the show. May your pursuit of happiness bring you joy. The Trump administration is backing away from a planned $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund after a revolt from Republicans on Capitol Hill. The fund, tied to a settlement and intended to be administered by the Justice Department, had drawn criticism as a potential slush fund that could benefit Trump allies prosecuted under the Biden administration. White House officials told GOP leaders they were retreating from the proposal, at least for now. What stands out to me is that this was never something Trump could simply do by executive order. It would have had to move through Congress, and right now he is running short on political leverage. Collins, Murkowski, and McConnell have already shown they're willing to break with the administration. Add in senators like Tom Tillis, John Cornyn, and Bill Cassidy, who have their own political considerations, and suddenly there are a lot of Republican votes that need convincing. If every other priority is tied to this fund, it becomes a problem. The White House has signaled retreat…. for now.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Meanwhile, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, alleging that ChatGPT is an unsafe product, particularly for children, and that the company misled the public about its risks. The lawsuit argues that AI contributes to harms including addiction, suicide, and even mass shootings. What makes this interesting is that there are no clean ideological fault lines on AI. In Florida, AI is increasingly being treated as just another version of Big Tech, grouped together with the companies conservatives believe have censored or de-platformed them. Simultaneously, politicians in states like Michigan are celebrating AI investments, data centers, and the jobs that come with them, even as it might leave Gretchen Whitmer on the outside looking in for 2028. As AI becomes a larger part of the economy, states are going to play a much bigger role in determining how it develops. But our biggest story remains Iran. Over the last few days, a targeted IRGC commander killing, an attack on a U.S. airbase in Kuwait, and reports that Iran is ending ceasefire talks have all pushed events away from diplomacy and toward escalation. Iran is threatening to fully shut down the Strait of Hormuz and other export routes. The president of Iran has reportedly tendered his resignation, while the IRGC appears to be tightening its grip on power. At the same time, Hezbollah has reportedly signaled a willingness to accept a ceasefire with Israel, though neither American nor Israeli officials seem convinced it would hold.Everything now revolves around leverage. The Strait of Hormuz is Iran's last major bargaining chip. If it reopens without major concessions, Tehran loses a significant source of pressure. If Iran gives up its nuclear ambitions or loses the ability to project power through regional proxies, the regime risks undermining the very justification it has used for decades. Meanwhile, global oil markets are hanging on every development. Hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough have helped keep prices contained, but each new escalation raises the possibility that the conflict widens and energy markets absorb the shock. One small but important development is that internet access appears to be returning inside Iran after months of restrictions. That means more information is beginning to flow out of the country at a moment when the political situation appears increasingly unstable. Whether this ends in negotiations, further military action, or a deeper internal power struggle unfortunately remains wrapped in the fog of war.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:03:07 - Interview with Evan Scrimshaw00:39:19 - Trump Slush Fund00:42:13 - AI Lawsuit00:46:34 - Iran00:50:10 - Interview with Charlie Feldman01:30:42 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. 00:00 So first, black people didn't have IDs. Then it was going to be too hard for women to get IDs. And now listen to what they're talking about in the Senate. That is not the half of it. Just consider all the people who will face new challenges just to vote for no good reason. If you are a student who just moved to start college, Republicans will make it harder for you to vote. Okay, because you can't use your college ID. 00:30 As we're talking to Representative William Timmons right now, Congressman Timmons, welcome to the program, sir. Hope you're doing well. Charlie, good afternoon. Great to be with you. You know, the funny thing is, is it's actually illegal in most states for you to vote if you are in college there. You have to vote where you are from. Right. That's even funnier. Yeah. So I don't even understand the rules of voting here, but SAVE Act, it passed the test vote 5148. Murkowski voted no. 00:59 Tom Tillis didn't vote at all. Are you aware of what's going on now with what they're calling storming the floor? 01:09 I'm not tracking. We've been busy in the house. But I know that there's a lot of people trying very hard to get it done. But the Democrats are trying to every procedural mechanism to stop them. And I think it is, I mean, I know there's a lot of debate about whether or not we should do away with the filibuster, but we know that the Democrats are going to do away with it once they're in power. So you either use it when it benefits you or they use it when it benefits them. So I mean, do you think this thing is ever going to do? Do you think it's going to get passed? 01:39 I'm not optimistic, I gotta be honest. We'll see, the Democrats are gonna have to defend us and we're gonna hang it around their necks for the midterms. So, and you told us last time you guys have another version ready to go, right? I was talking to the White House earlier today. I'm not clear whether they're gonna try to amend it in the Senate because the president wants to add no men and women's sports and he wants to add no transgender surgeries for minors. 02:08 I mean, you know, they got to do that in the next, they got to amend it right now. So we'll see what happens. Yeah, we will see what happens with that. So I'm not sure how that's going to go. Tell us about H.R. 1958. I think this is a great idea, especially when we're seeing all that went on in Minneapolis. Now we're hearing that Maine is another hotbed of fraud, California hotbed of fraud, the Deporting Fraudsters Act. That's going to be on the floor tomorrow afternoon. 02:37 It is. And honestly, it's just common sense. If you come to this country and you defraud the American taxpayers, you shouldn't be allowed to stay. I mean, it's as simple as that. You're right. And it would ensure that individuals who commit fraud against programs like Social Security, SNAP and other public benefits, they are deportable. well, even uh Congressman Biggs, Congresswoman Biggs said that if you come here, 03:05 and you commit crimes and you commit fraud, then you should go and you should be, you know, denaturalized. 03:14 right? That's exactly right. That's exactly right. And I mean, we've got to create this sense for people to continue to break into this country illegally. And I think that's a great way to do it. Yeah, absolutely right. So tell us about, mean, here we are, we've got the Department of Homeland Security, that shut down, TSA is shut down, Coast Guard shut down, FEMA shut down. None of these things have anything to do with ICE. Why are the Democrats keeping the government shut down? 03:42 That's the only levers they have. And so they're trying to use the government shutdown to inflict pain to get concessions out of the president. This is not going to work. Yeah. The fact that they're using TSA pay and you got all these PSA that are working that they're not getting paid and lines are getting abysmally long and airports are becoming complete log jams and it's ...

It has been a month since hundreds of members of a northern Ontario First Nation were put in hotels across the province after a water crisis. Many, however, have chosen to stay at the reserve. As Dan Karpenchuk reports, a state of emergency was declared in early January after a parasite was found in water samples and led to dozens of cases of gastrointestinal illnesses. Medical staff left Kashechewan a week ago after consultation with community leaders, but they say residents who remain will still be able to access healthcare services. Lisa Westaway is the regional executive for Indigenous Services Canada. “We've worked with Weeneebayko area health authority, Orange, which is emergency response and the ministry of health to ensure that services are in place for community members who choose to remain in Kashechewan.” Band leaders in Kaschewan declared a state of emergency on January fourth after damage to the water system. That led to sewage seeping into people's homes creating public health and safety issue. More than 1500 people were sent to communities across Ontario including Niagara Falls, Timmins, and Kingston. Less than 400 decided to stay. Tyson Wesley is the executive director of the Kashechewan First Nation. “A lot of people that are currently in the community are deciding to stay. However we're trying to develop some plans to allow them to be there such as our community across the river Fort Albany. So we're trying to see how they can access health care.” More than 60 band members at the fly-in community on the western shore of James Bay have been diagnosed with the parasite cryptosporidium, which causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as cramps, diarrhea, nausea, fever, and vomiting. Most cases are resolved without medication over a couple of weeks. It is still unclear when people will be able to return home. Tribal leaders from across the country spoke out this week at a U.S. Senate hearing against possible changes within the Small Business Administration (SBA) program that supports Native entities. The Alaska Desk's Alena Naiden from our flagship station KNBA reports. The 8(a) Business Development Program provides federal contracting opportunities to socially disadvantaged individuals or tribes. U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) co-led the oversight hearing focused on the program. “It delivers mission-critical work for civilian and defense agencies, and it promotes economic development in Native communities while helping to fulfill the federal trust responsibility.” But over the past year, the federal SBA and other agencies have launched audits into the program, and announced a sweeping suspension of companies participating in it. U.S. Defense Secretary aka U.S. War Secretary Pete Hegseth also announced on social media last month that his department would be “taking a sledgehammer to the oldest [Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion] DEI program in the federal government.” Murkowski says that Native-owned businesses participate in the program because Congress recognized the government's trust and treaty obligations to Native communities. “That was not based on race, it was not based on DEI.” Katherine Carlton (Iñupiat) is the president of Chugach Alaska Corporation. Her organization has participated in the program for decades and has benefitted from its economic opportunities. “For us, it provided the pathway to recover from the devastating Exxon Valdez oil spill in our region.” Polly Watson is vice president of operations at Bristol Bay Native Corporation and says her organization has several businesses participating in the 8(a) program. Watson says the corporation reinvests the revenue it receives through government contracts back into the community. One example is a partnership with the state Division of Motor Vehicles to deliver mobile services. “To bring real ID and driver's license services to seven villages in the Bristol Bay region serving rural residents.” Tribal leaders and senators from Nevada, Oklahoma, Montana, and Hawaii all spoke in support of the Native participation in the 8(a) program. Tara breaks down the latest explosive revelations about voter irregularities in Fulton County, Georgia, exposing what she calls a cover-up by Democrats and weak Republicans. Lisa Murkowski claims federal election oversight is unconstitutional—but the Constitution says otherwise. The segment also highlights taxpayer-funded security grants for controversial religious groups, and the potential swing in congressional seats if voter rolls were truly cleaned up. In this episode, Tara and guests discuss Lisa Murkowski's opposition to election oversight and constitutional misinterpretations. Newly unsealed affidavits reveal multiple serious irregularities in Fulton County's 2020 election, including double-counted ballots, lost ballot images, and improperly certified ballots. The discussion also touches on federal vs. state powers, previous federal election oversight under Democrats, and how these issues may impact future elections. Tara emphasizes the importance of voter roll integrity, potential shifts in state and congressional control, and the ongoing scrutiny in Arizona. Tara criticizes Republican leaders like Mitch McConnell and Lisa Murkowski for blocking the SAFE Act, while explaining how Congress has the authority to mandate voter roll transparency and purges. She argues that cleaning up fraudulent rolls — including noncitizens and ghost voters — could swing elections in favor of Republicans and reverse disenfranchisement trends. The discussion touches on constitutional arguments, the impact of the 2020 census, and potential shifts in congressional seats if voter rolls were fully verified. The conversation widens to key battleground developments in Texas and Florida, including Alexander Vindman’s Senate bid and the risks of divisive primaries, while Republicans face mounting structural challenges and a slipping grip on the House. Then, Chuck sits down with John Conyers III to discuss his deeply personal memoir "My Father's House." Far from a typical political biography, this book offers a raw, unflinching look at what it's like to grow up as the son of legendary civil rights congressman John Conyers Jr.—inheriting a legacy you never chose and navigating between worlds of poverty and power. John opens up about the family betrayal that triggered his father's 2017 resignation, the complicated truth about Rosa Parks' final years, and his own journey from the music industry to confronting his predetermined path. This isn't hagiography or exposé—it's a son trying to understand how a public giant could be both indispensable to a movement and deeply flawed in private. The conversation ranges from the intimate—John's anger at having expectations placed on him, his career as a songwriter and producer—to broader questions about how we reckon with complicated heroes, from his father to MLK to LeBron James. Todd and Conyers explore Detroit's cultural legacy, the emotional toll of creative work, and what it means to accept the full humanity of the figures we elevate. It's a fascinating discussion about legacy, identity, and the cost of living in a house built by history, featuring unexpected detours into NBA debates and why Detroit will always be a cultural exporter, not an importer. Finally, Chuck gives his ToddCast Top 5 crazy things that used to be LEGAL in politics and a bonus Top 5 list of things that shouldn’t be. This is the full show for January 13, 2025. 0:30 We break down President Trump’s upcoming health care affordability plan, arguing it targets the real crisis driving America’s health care system: skyrocketing prices. From rising insurance premiums and crushing deductibles to unaffordable prescription drugs, the conversation zeroes in on why the Affordable Care Act failed to deliver affordable care for millions of Americans—especially seniors on fixed incomes. We explore Trump’s push for lower drug prices through “most favored nation” pricing, increased transparency, and free-market competition, framing it as an America First approach to health care reform that could finally rein in costs without expanding Obamacare subsidies. 9:30 Plus, we cover the Top 3 Things You Need to Know. Former President Bill Clinton and former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton failed to appear at a Congressional Hearing after they were subpoenaed to tesify about Jeffrey Epstein. 12:30 Get TrimROX from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. Go to vni.life/agr and use the promo code AGR20. 13:00 A controversial Senate vote is exposing a deep divide within the Republican Party. We react to news that 14 Republican senators joined Democrats to approve $5.6 billion in refugee assistance funding—nearly three times the level before the Biden administration—despite ongoing fraud investigations tied to refugee programs in states like Minnesota and Ohio. And we're naming names! John Kennedy, Susan Collins, Lisa, Murkowski, Lindsey Graham among others supported the measure, and it's a betrayal of conservative principles and an abandonment of fiscal responsiblity. 16:00 We've got a question for American Mamas Teri Netterville and Kimberly Burleson — is it even worth trying to talk to people on the political left anymore? We discuss the importance of maintaining civil dialogue across political divides, even when those conversations are uncomfortable. A healthy disagreement is a sign of maturity and growth, not weakness, and real connection can still happen when humor and respect are allowed into the room. If you'd like to ask our American Mamas a question, go to our website, AmericanGroundRadio.com/mamas and click on the Ask the Mamas button. 23:00 We break down sanctuary cities and their long-running "shell game" with federal taxpayer dollars. For years these jurisdictions accepted billions in federal funding for infrastructure, health care, and law enforcement while simultaneously refusing to cooperate with ICE and shielding illegal immigrants—including criminals—from enforcement. Well that era is over. President Trump announced that the federal government will cut off all federal funding to any city or state that deliberately blocks Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 26:00 We Dig Deep into latest example of “impeachment as a political weapon,” reacting to Illinois Congresswoman Robin Kelly’s filing of articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The allegations range from obstruction of congressional oversight to abuse of office. But they are all examples of blatant retaliation for Noem’s enforcement of federal immigration laws under the Trump administration. Democrats refused to convict former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, but they are pushing to impeach Noem, who is enforcing the law. Democrats now view impeachment as a strategy—even when conviction is impossible—to undermine election results and stall governance. 32:00 Get Prodovite Plus from Victory Nutrition International for 20% off. Go to vni.life/agr and use the promo code AGR20. 32:30 We turn to the escalating crisis in Iran and our concern over the uncertainty surrounding the situation as reports emerge of a brutal regime crackdown on protesters. With internet access cut off and reliable information scarce, we cite estimates of thousands killed or arrested by Iran’s security forces as demonstrations against the theocratic government continue. The unrest is a pivotal moment for the Iranian people—and a serious test of U.S. foreign policy. 35:30 The Stop Insider Trader Act is a Bright Spot. It would ban members of Congress from buying and selling individual stocks while in office, while still allowing them to hold preexisting investments and invest in broad-based index funds. The proposal would also extend restrictions to spouses and dependent children, a provision that would have directly impacted high-profile cases of congressional stock trading. Lawmakers should not need a special law to remind them not to profit from nonpublic information obtained through their official duties. This bill’s upcoming House hearing and support from leadership mark a meaningful moment. Americans aren’t demanding perfection from their representatives—just honesty, fairness, and an end to profiting off privileged access. 39:30 We discuss President Trump’s visit to Dearborn, Michigan, where he toured the Ford F-150 plant and delivered remarks to the Detroit Economic Club alongside Ford executive Bill Ford Jr., highlighting American manufacturing, jobs, and the auto industry. The visit took a turn when a heckler reportedly shouts an accusation at the president on the factory floor, prompting an alleged profane response from Trump. The U.S. Supreme Court has once again declined to take up challenges to a federal law that protects subsistence hunting and fishing in Alaska. The court rejected the state of Alaska's petition to review a federal lawsuit against the state over salmon management on the Kuskokwim River in Southwest Alaska. KNBA's Rhonda McBride has reaction from Native leaders. The state had argued the federal government was misinterpreting a law Congress passed to protect a rural priority for subsistence. Last year, after the 9th Circuit Court of appeals sided with federal fishery managers, the state asked the court to take up the case, but in a docket on Monday, the court denied the state's petition. The Alaska Federation of Natives hailed the decision. Its president, Ben Mallott, says decades of hard-won protections under the landmark Katie John lawsuits were also on the line. “I feel relieved that we don't have to spend our limited resources and efforts, fighting for what we know is right, hopefully our final time protecting what Katie John fought for.” John was an Ahtna Athabascan elder who fought for the right to fish on rivers that flow through federal lands. This is the third time the court has decided to let the Katie John litigation stand untouched. The federal government's Kuskokwim lawsuit, which the court has left intact, now affirms similar protections. Michelle Anderson knew the late Katie John when she was little girl. Today, she is president of the Ahtna Native Coporation. She says the Athabascan elder taught her people well to stand up for what's right. “During our history here is that you can’t sit back and rest on your laurels and you must always be vigilant and looking out for what’s coming next. No. I don’t think anyone is jubilant and celebrating and thinking this is it. We’re just waiting for the next time.” Alaska Fish and Game Commissioner Doug Vincent-Lang said in a statement that the state will respect the decision of the court to not address the legal issues regarding fish and game management authorities over navigable waters belonging to the state of Alaska, but the commissioner also said the state will continue to work with the Secretaries of Interior and Agriculture to ensure state rights are safeguarded. Mary Peltola, left, applaudes during a speech by former First Lady Jill Biden in Bethel, Alaska. Democrat Mary Peltola (Yup’ik), the first Alaska Native person elected to Congress, announced Monday that she's running for U.S. Senate, taking on incumbent U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-AK). Alaska Public Media Washington correspondent Liz Ruskin reports interest in whether Peltola would run has been high for months. Her announcement Monday came with a video portraying her salmon-centered family life on the Kuskokwim River. She repeats her previous campaign slogan: “Fish, family, freedom.” She also hearkens back to Alaska senators who served in less partisan times. “(Former U.S. Sen.) Ted Stevens (R-AK) often said, ‘To hell with politics. Put Alaska first.’ It's about time Alaskans teach the rest of the country what Alaska first and, really, America first looks like.” Nationally, Democrats believe that with Peltola on the ballot, Alaska presents one of their best hopes of flipping a seat. Political analyst and statistician Nate Silver said in a social media post last week that Democrats still have an uphill battle to win back the Senate majority, but that Peltola's candidacy moves their chances in Alaska from a long-shot to plausible. Sen. Sullivan has already raised $6 million this election cycle. He has President Donald Trump's endorsement and maintains a strong alignment with Trump. But, in what Democrats took to be a sign that he's feeling the political heat, Sullivan last month unexpectedly voted to extend health insurance subsidies. He's also touting a new bill that targets one of Peltola's primary issues: Bycatch, or the accidental catch of salmon by the pollock fleet. Within minutes of Peltola’s announcement, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and other groups supporting Sullivan issued a string of press releases, previewing the campaign issues they plan to use against Peltola. They link her to President Joe Biden and national figures on the left, as well as transgender rights and policies that restrict drilling on federal land in Alaska. Some Republican messages jabbed at her effectiveness in Congress, and at her high rate of missed House votes. Peltola tried to head off that last point. “D.C. people were shocked that I prioritized going back to Alaska in July to help put up fish for our family, but Alaskans understand.” For U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Peltola's candidacy presents a dilemma. They're both moderates, and Murkowski endorsed Peltola in the past, despite their party differences. Sen. Murkowski declined to pick a side when a reporter asked before Christmas, but Thursday, she said she'd made a decision: she is endorsing her Republican colleague. “We’ve had a pretty solid team here in the Senate for the past 12 years, so we want to figure out how we’re going to keep in the majority. And Dan delivers that.” Both sides are expected to pour tens of millions of dollars into the race. Sullivan's last race in 2020 was one of the most expensive elections in state history, with spending by the campaigns and outside groups totaling more than $57 million. Sullivan was outspent, but beat independent candidate Al Gross by a substantial margin. Peltola lost her House seat to U.S. Rep. Nick Begich (R-AK). After ranked ballots were tallied in 2024, she had almost 49% of the vote to his 51%. The rankings had little impact on the final result in that race. Before voters' second- and third- choices were counted, Begich's lead was slightly smaller. Sullivan and Peltola will face off first in a nonpartisan primary in August. The top four candidates will advance to a ranked-choice ballot in November. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. Sign up for our daily newsletter today. SEASON 3 EPISODE 143: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL REPORT: Which is worse? That Trump is running a “Protection Racket Presidency” and bribed one Senator to vote for his Big Beautiful Soak The Poor Budget Bill while metaphorically bumping off one Senator who wouldn’t? Or that Trump threatened Israel, threatened the government of Israel, if Israel's courts don’t do what HE wants on behalf of Netanyahu – and nobody noticed. Which is worse? Well it’s a trick question because these are actually just two different aspects of the same story. It’s a protection racket. These are a) the domestic operations of the protection racket, and b) the international operations of the protection racket. Thom Tillis, the vaguely responsible Republican senator from North Carolina, refused to let Trump politically rape him Saturday night and would not vote to advance the budget bill. Trump had been threatening him for weeks, months, accelerated it, finally began to ask for volunteers to primary him, Tillis announced yesterday he will retire from the senate at the end of his term next year. So much for Mr. Tillis. So much for somebody, anybody, in the Republican party saying “I owe this country something.” So much for the thought that when the country is up against it and the breaks are beating the boys, tell ‘em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Tiller. I don’t know where I’ll be then, but I’ll know about it and I’ll be happy.” Well I know where Thom Tillis will be: he’ll be back home in Cornelius, North Carolina. Presumably drinking heavily. Reflecting on how he represents the utter moral and ethical decline of the already near-bankrupt and nearly-totally-declined Republican Party. Meanwhile Senator Lisa Murkowski turns out to be Susan Collins with less Kibuki make-up. She sold her soul to get herself a carveout for Alaska, only to find out the Senate Parliamentarian says it violates the Senate's Byrd Rule and the carveout must be carved out. Lol. AND TRUMP THREATENED TO DEFUND ISRAEL - what would be the end of the political career of any other American figure - and nobody noticed. And it seems to have worked. ALSO: WHY KRISTEN GILLIBRAND MUST RESIGN (and get treatment), Stephen Miller has a financial interest in the ICE raids, the plot to make Eric Adams the Republican nominee for mayor of New York, and you missed the new SCOTUS rulings on porn! Pay attention, Mike Johnson! B-Block (37:32) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Jeopardy aficionados worried about a conflict of interest because the contestant was related to the person who was the answer to the question? I was on two episodes of Jeopardy in which a contestant had the same name as the answer to the question, and where a contestant wrote four of the five sketches that were all the answers in an entire category! Plus the Fox host who doesn't know when World War 2 was or which American party caused breadlines; Chris Cuomo thinks AOC destroyed the Democratic Party not, say, he and his brother; and idiot Senator Bernie Moreno discusses "anals" with Laura Ingraham. C-Block (56:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's that time again. SEASON 3 EPISODE 119: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Senator Lisa Murkowski may be the most important person in the country right now. Her public confession that she too is afraid of the Trump nightmare and her HINTS at talking to Senate colleagues ABOUT her fear – could provide just enough Republican rebellion to rein Trump in. It feels as if she just got it, as if she just understood that yes Trump is Nazi-esque and yes Trump often emulates the Soviets but the closest parallel to him is O'Brien and "The Party" in Orwell's "1984" and the simple terrifying conviction that "the object of power is power." That's why I think when Kristi Garden Noem and Secretary of Defense (and Vodka) Hegseth (if he's still on the job after ANOTHER Signal chat came to light) file their report on the border to Trump this week and tell him no, they don't need to invoke The Insurrection Act, he may do it anyway because... the object of power is power. Murkowski and thirteen other Republican Senators and at most four Republican Representatives can stop this. They can save the country. They can impeach Trump or if they still can’t get over the hump, the 18 of you can use the THREAT to impeach him, to virtually fetter him, to at least control the width and breadth of his damage, to make him know the Senate WILL vote against him. She can also talk to anybody on the Supreme Court except Alito or Thomas. The other seven, in the middle of the damn night - at 1 AM Saturday - stepped in to freeze any further disappearing Americans under the phony premise of The Alien Enemies Act. And there is reason to hope that these Murkowski-led conversations might happen before the iron curtain of dictatorship descends: Later in her confession of fear, she hinted at doing exactly what I just suggested. Meanwhile, how many times can you self-destruct on this? Gavin Newsom dismisses the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case as a "distraction" and calls Democrats sheep for defending the constitution. On the other hand, Senator Ed Markey is crafting a sense of the senate resolution stating Trump cannot again be elected, and cannot again serve, as president or vice president. Damn Straight. B-Block (40:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Musk Crappertruck Owner who claims to also be a "girl dad"; Pennsylvania congressman Dan Meuser kinda blames Governor Josh Shapiro's criticizing Trump for provoking the attempt to incinerate him and his family in the governor's mansion on Passover. And Trump DEI hire Pam Bondi lies that compulsive martyr and 85th Place Olympic Trials finisher Riley Gaines "went to the Olympics." Not unless she bought a ticket, Pam Blondie. C-Block (55:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The renewed Trump bid to ban the Associated Press got me talking to a friend: How MANY times have I been banned, as a reporter? Do you mean this century, or in total? It's... a lot. From the LA Clippers to the ESPN Campus, I've been banned... a lot. And je ne regret rien!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We dive into the shocking FSU shooting and the media's absolutely gross response, call out CBS for their shameless spin, and break down why Carmelo Anthony's latest drama has us all scratching our heads. We talk Kyle Rittenhouse, Kyle's critics, and the gang affiliations Democrats really don't want to talk about. We're also calling out AOC's wild new accent (seriously, what is happening?), Van Hollen's margarita diplomacy, and the absolute race-baiting queen Rep. Crockett. Plus, Mark Carney can't define gender, Washington State wants to parent your kids, and J.K. Rowling is once again the voice of reason. We've got Joy Reid cult talk, George Clooney's terrible face, and David Hogg whining about sleepy Democrats. 00:00Good morning2:57FSU shooting latest9:35First Fidelity10:54Disgusting spin by MSM13:40Carmelo Anthony press conference descends into chaos24:45Blackout Coffee26:51Dem Senator goes to El Salvador31:35Scott Jennings reacts32:50Dems cannot read a poll41:02Ad41:03Canada PM goes full Bud Light44:11Washington politician is gross and woke47:35Is J.K.
