Against a landscape of 50 year old general aviation aircraft designs, there is one company that continues to innovate and release new aircraft at a staggering pace, and they do it with STYLE. Tecnam's story as a family-owned company is fascinating, and David Copeland knows both Tecnam and the general aviation industry like few others. He is a veteran executive with experience ranging from Raytheon's Beechcraft aircraft, Mooney, Mid-Continent and now Tecnam. “SocialFlight Live!” is a live broadcast dedicated to supporting General Aviation pilots and enthusiasts during these challenging times. Welcome to your weekly General Aviation News update, we have three stories for you this week, the Aviation Workforce Development Act, Tecnam lands two training fleet orders, and Cub Crafters unveiled a new carbon cub at Sun 'n Fun.
Using AirTag to track baggage, airlines release some flyers from no-fly list, Bombardier headquarters in Wichita, aircraft leased to Russia, Cirrus fuel flow issues, plane-swap stunt, Tecnam 2-seat trainer, air ambulance costs.
Thanks so much for tuning into the Pilot Briefing Podcast for the week of April 18, 2022. In this episode you will learn more about: Why AOPA is issuing an urgent call to support Hartford-Brainard Airport, Van's Aircraft celebrates 50 years, the FAA withdraws proposed Grumman AD, Tecnam announces a new trainer, and AOPA leaders brief pilots at Sun 'n Fun!
This week in airplane news, a U2 pilot helped with a general aviation emergency, the Tecnam hybrid completed its first flight, Jeppesen has added backcountry airstrips, the Cessna Turbo 182 returns to the market, and the FAA administrator has announced he will be resigning. A U2 pilot assisted in an emergency in Feb. 8th, 2022. A civilian aircraft experienced an engine failure over Lake Berryessa and was looking for a place to land The U2 pilot relayed the mayday call to Oakland ATC, who alerted local authorities. Due to terrain, the civilian airplane was not able to be seen on radar. About 30 minutes after the mayday, the airplane was found by CHP, having safely landed in a field. https://theaviationgeekclub.com/u-2-dragon-lady-pilot-relays-radio-messages-to-civilian-pilot-in-distress-helping-him-to-find-a-safe-spot-for-emergency-landing-near-lake-berryessa/ The P2010 H3PS Hybrid aircraft made its first flight late December 2021. It is powered by a 135HP Rotor 915 coupled with a 30kW Rolls-Royce electric motor. The test was designed to show that this hybrid configuration can bear the same useful load as a 180HP combustion engine. The electric motor is used for additional torque for TO/climb and the small battery can be charged in between. Collaboration between Avidyne, Jeppesen, and the Recreational Aviation Foundation will allow for many backcountry airstrips being added to the Jeppesen Nav databases These include private use strips, unimproved airstrips, and backcountry strips “Our goal is to promote backcountry flying and to encourage more pilots to join us in the adventure of flight, and the aviation community is fortunate to have a friend like Avidyne who recognizes the value of these off-the-beaten-path aviation destinations,” said RAF Chairman, John McKenna. https://generalaviationnews.com/2022/02/12/backcountry-airstrips-added-to-jeppesen-nav-databases/ Textron is returning the Cessna T182 Turbo to its piston lineup Orders are currently open and deliveries will begin in 2023. The Skyline has a base price of $653,000 and will feature a G1000 avionics suite with a GI-275 electric standby, a constant speed three bladed, electric de-ice propeller and an in-cabin oxygen system The turbocharged Lycoming TIO-540 allows the 182T to cruise at up to FL 200, at a top speed of 165kts with a range of 971-NM and a useful load of 998lbs. https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/turbo-skylane-returns-to-textron-lineup/ The FAA administration released a memo stating: “Over the past several years, my family has been a source of tremendous encouragement, strength and support. Nevertheless, after sometimes long and unavoidable periods of separation from my loved ones during the pandemic, it is time to devote my full time and attention to them. As I wrote in my letter to President Biden, it is time to go home.” Administrator Dickson said he made the decision in light of growing extended family and time away from his family. It's expected Deputy Administrator Bradley Mims will take over Dickson's duties. https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/faa-administrator-to-resign/
Widerøe is a Norwegian airline that decided to proactively become a world pioneer in the field of aviation decarbonization. In line with Norway's goal to decarbonize aviation as fast as possible, Widerøe started researching options to electrify its fleet. The intricate and beautiful geography of Norway plays in its favour, since many of the routes operated by Widerøe are short hops linking small communities, the perfect stage length and capacity to switch to electric aircraft that could be powered by the country's many hydropower plants. So, Widerøe has teamed up with Rolls-Royce and Tecnam with the goal to be a true pioneer in the field of electric flight. But it doesn't stop there, Widerøe is also evaluating the use of eVTOLs to complement and capillarize its route network and it has also spun-off an entity, Widerøe Zero, to channel and support additional projects in the field of green aviation. On today's episode, Widerøe's head of strategy, Andreas Kollbye Aks, talks about all these exciting projects, their status and future prospects and, more generally, how this Norwegian airline wants to lead the world in the path towards decarbonization!
Conclusion Ainsi se conclut donc le 99ème épisode. J'espère qu'il vous a plu et je vous invite à vous abonner sur votre application de podcast favoris. In this episode I welcome Alex Turnbull into the virtual hanger. Alex is a mountain flying instructor at the Wakatipu Aero Club in Queenstown, New Zealand. This is another episode of what you can do with your certificate aside from the typical $100 hamburger or pancake breakfast flight. Listen in as Alex talks about mountain and remote strip flying in this unique and challenging airspace. He also talks about the unique requirement of private pilot training in New Zealand, hint it involves mountain flying.I hope Steve and Grant from the Plane Crazy Down Under podcast don't get angry with me for encroaching on their part of the world.Below is information from Gareth Allen, in charge of promotion for the club, on the club itself and the area. The aero club flies four cessna 172s, a cessna 206, and a Tecnam P2002JF. Most of the club revenue comes from flights into Milford Sound, a popular scenic area, with a challenging approach and landingat Milford Sound airstrip. The strip itself is 1800ft long, at the intersection of two valleys and the sound itself, producing a washing machine of turbulence, and an awkward traffic pattern. On busy summer days the airspace can get quite busy, with Islanders, Caravans, and smaller planes shuffling tourists in and out from Queenstown. Weather in the area is quite changeable, making the flight impossible roughly a third of the days during the summer, as all tourism operations are done under VFR. Often when weather is marginal, some passes into the area will be closed, making local knowledge of the network of creeks and valleys in and out of the sound essential.Flight training makes up the rest of the club's income, with a mixture of overseas and local pilots earning PPLs, CPLs, and doing mountain flight training. There is no instrument flight training at Queenstown,as the IAFs are all at ~10k feet, and the DHs at 4000 (runway elevation is 1200ft). The specialty here is mountain flying, as every flight that leaves Queenstown interacts with the mountains, and thereare an almost endless supply of new valleys to explore. A few dozen remote strips of ranging difficulty within a half hour's flight round out the saddle-crossing, low flight, and contour flight training. There's also a beach landing strip 40 minutes away, for beach operations training.Given Queenstown's reputation as the "adventure capitol of the world," many tourists want an aviation experience that is less scenic, and more exhilarating. The club gives trial flights daily during thesummer months, mostly to foreign tourists, through the river valleys and back over the lake to Queenstown. At the high end of the adrenaline spectrum is the aerobatic flight, using a Pitts Special. The Pitts is known for being extremely difficult to fly, and especially to land. It can't be landed with a "wheel landing" and instead needs a three-point landing. At that flight attitude there is zero forward visibility, meaning that pilots must use peripheral vision to keep lined up with the runway and avoid ground looping.
