The moment news of Ray's retirement hit the airwaves it became a priority to lock him in for a podcast. After all I have known the man for fifty four years, and we spent a lot of time together in his early days with the 2GB Macquarie team. His journey in Australian sports media has been a fascinating one- from a humble start as a harness racing commentator on Riverina tracks, to the upper echelon of Australian sports broadcasting. He admits there was a major degree of sadness surrounding his decision to retire. Ray says a century of State Of Origins would have been the perfect way to end his career, but he resisted the temptation. He talks of wife Cher's concerns about his increasing anxiety attacks. Ray was happy to talk of his early family life in Junee. He was the youngest of seven born to parents Joe and Win. He pays tribute to his Mum and Dad. He reminisces about a trip he and I made to Junee in the early 70's. Our opportunity to call a race or two at the Junee trots was thwarted by a freak cloudburst. Ray was gobsmacked to learn that a bronze likeness of himself was to be erected in his hometown. He shares the full story about an idea promulgated by his great friend Ray Hadley. The recent retiree talks of his fascination with the legendary race caller Ken Howard. He was humbled to work with Ken for a short time after his move to Sydney in 1969. Ray reviews some early events in his working life. He talks of his elation when offered a full time job with prominent regional radio station 2LF, and the surprise telegram which conveyed an invitation to join 2GB. Ray looks back on early days when he and I shared race calling duties at the provincial gallops and Harold Park trots. He talks of his very first association with Channel 9- the opportunity to call live greyhound racing on a Saturday night programme called British Comedy Gone To The Dogs. The ace sports commentator looks back on 2GB's shock decision to become a full TAB station in 1972. The new format failed miserably. The punters loved it but there were not enough of them to keep the station afloat in the tough Sydney market. Ray has never forgotten the day his boss Garth Cary sent him to the SCG when the resident football caller took ill. It was to change his life. He looks back on the shock offer from the Ten Network to head up the commentary team on a new and exciting concept called the Amco Cup. Ray was thrilled to return to race calling during his Ch 10 days. He got to call three Melbourne Cups. He was devastated in 1986 when Rex Mossop was brought over from Ch 7 to take over Rugby League duties. He explains how Skychannel kept him afloat during an unhappy time in his life. He talks of the undreamed of opportunity to call the football for the Nine Network, unquestionably his golden years. Ray nominates his favourite Grand Final and nominates the players for whom he had the most respect and admiration. Ray talks of the style he developed over the years with one surprise revelation. He pays tribute to some of his favourite co- presenters. Rabs talks of family- sons Mark and Chris and his only daughter Holly. He makes special mention of his four grandchildren. He confirms that he'll continue to contribute to the Nine Network coverage. You'll enjoy a trip down memory lane with a true master of his trade.

In this episode, we speak to Brian Gallagher, who shared his insight as the Chief of Sales at Australian Media Owner SCA on the changing media landscape and how the pandemic has helped shine a light on localism. SME businesses were the first to feel the pain of the Covid-19 outbreak in Australia. SCA quickly mobilised a 'Shop Local' campaign on a national basis, with localised campaigns running on social radio shows, where local people could call in and talk up their favourite local businesses. "...because of the very highly social nature of radio, we were also able to use our morning shows, our drive time shows, and our daytime shows to get consumers to call in and tell stories about great local vendors, what they were doing, and how they'd helped them." Brian also spoke on the attractiveness and dominance of the big giants Google and Facebook for SME advertisers and why SCA brought in more digital marketing experts to help their customers understand the importance of advertising outside the giants with a blend of mediums to achieve their goals. "Facebook can operate at any budgetary level. They operate in a dashboarded scenario... It's a slot machine for marketing; depending on how sophisticated a client you are, you can very quickly put a lot of coins in the slot. Cost per acquisition seems to rise inexorably. We feel very strongly that those platforms, while appearing convenient or cost-effective, there's a hidden cost there, and our small to medium advertisers, in the main, don't see how that works. We are fiercely local about our content and our connection with our communities, but we've implemented more and more executives who are experts in digital marketing in these communities so that they can take hold of those advertisers and say, "Yes, you should be in search. "Yes, you should be in social, "but you should be deploying in this manner." ABOUT BRIAN GALLAGHER Brian has over 30 years' experience in the broadcast and digital media industries, from advertising sales to developing video content production business's. He has focused his career on the successful intersection of content and brand storytelling. Brian has led the successful development of brand integration strategy and workflow for broadcasters and production companies which led to him to build a successful brand funded television programming business. Brian has developed several business's from start-up stage to commercial success. In his current role as Chief Sales Officer at SCA he enjoys driving business growth for the many major advertisers and SME's that SCA support via Australia's largest network of Radio, TV and Digital, by driving a passion for 'great ideas inspired by insight' across the team. ABOUT SCA Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) is one of Australia's leading media companies reaching more than 95% of the Australian population through its radio, television, and digital assets. Under the Triple M and Hit network brands, SCA owns 99 stations across FM, AM, and DAB+ radio. SCA provides national sales representation for 34 regional radio stations. Brad McEwan is an interesting fella, great communicator, deep thinker and semi-regular on TYP. Of course, he's well-known for his decades of work as a Sports Journalist, Presenter and Host on a multitude of platforms but mainly for his work on the Ten Network. This was an interesting chat about all things perspective, mindset, attitude and subjective reality but in the last fifteen minutes (or so), Brad and Melissa go deep with their own ongoing Obsessive Challenges and it's absolutely fascinating listening. The outstanding Victorian jockey talks of the fainting spell at home that signalled his impending medical condition. James was in disbelief when Doctors explained the likely ramifications of syncope- a disorder that would be aggravated by the ravages of wasting. He talks of the support of family and friends when the inevitable decision had to be made. James talks of the offers he’s had to work for RSN 927 and the Ten Network during the Spring carnival- just what he needs at this time. The fourth generation jockey looks at the race riding dynasty from which he descends. James pays tribute to Brawny Spirit, the million dollar earner trained by his late grandfather Mick. He looks back on his original apprenticeship to his grandfather, and his brief stint with the late Max Lees at Newcastle. James remembers his very first winner and his first time in the winner’s circle on a metropolitan track. He talks of his great association with the Danny O’Brien stable with special mention of Gr 1 winners Star Witness and Douro Valley. James looks back on four Melbourne Cup rides, and Gr 1 wins in Brisbane on Absolut Glam and Magicool. The former jockey reviews a Gr 1 win in Hong Kong- the Chairman’s Prize Sprint on Dim Sum for John Moore. James explains his reasons for terminating his contract in Hong Kong. He fondly remembers a Singapore stint when he rode several winners for Laurie Laxon and Steve Burridge. Most importantly this is where he met Laura- his wife and mother of three great kids. James looks back on some Sydney winners he rode during his short career. He explains a tutorial role he has with three promising young jockeys.

An eyewitness to six decades of News. A journey behind the headlines that shaped the News and the life of a Newsman. Author, Broadcaster and veteran Newsman - Mal Walden Mal Walden's career spanned six decades in broadcasting and television. On his retirement in 2013 he was reported to be the longest ‘continually' serving face on Melbourne television. He began his media career in 1961 at Warrnambool radio station 3YB. From Warrnambool he moved across Bass Strait to Tasmania where he joined 7EX and later TNT Channel 9, also in Launceston. Between 1966 and 1969 Mal was a general announcer and news reporter for Melbourne's 3DB. In 1969 he based himself in the Middle East spending six months on a kibbutz in Israel from where he filed news reports to Melbourne's radio 3DB talk back host Gerald Lions. Mal returned to Melbourne in 1970 and joined HSV-7 where he hosted a number of shows, including the popular program Jeopardy. In 1970 he also read his first news bulletin on Melbourne television before beginning a journalism cadetship with Seven. One of the highlights of Mal's early career was a world scoop as the first reporter to file from the scene of Cyclone Tracey in Darwin in 1974. In 1978 Mal became the first working journalist to be appointed a senior television news presenter, a trend that has since been adopted by most other Networks. In April 1987 Mal not only read the news, he made the news. His controversial sacking from HSV7 by the Fairfax Sydney Television Group led to public protests, staff walkouts and a plunge in news ratings to an unprecedented zero. His immediate move to the TEN Network brought a record news rating of 40% market share - the equivalent of one million viewers a night. At Network TEN Mal presented the news bulletin with David Johnston along with a new innovative segment called "Mal's Melbourne" which covered a wide variety of human- interest stories. This segment would become the genesis of his second successful book ‘Good News' published 30 years later. In December 1995 Mal was appointed senior co-presenter of Network Ten's 5pm Melbourne News a position he held until his retirement at the end of 2013. Such was the respect in the eyes of Victorians the Premier Denis Napthine hosted a State Reception at Parliament House. Several weeks later he was awarded the Quill Life Time Achievement Award by the Victorian Press Council. He was 17 years of age when he applied for his first job and retired at the age of 70 (on the day of his choosing) something very rare in the television industry. Over six decades there was not a news headline or major news event that Mal had not read or reported. Since his retirement Mal has written three children's books and published his memoir 'The Newsman' and ‘Good News' a selection of stories that helped shape Melbourne. His third book published by Brolga - ‘Don't piss in my pocket and tell me it's raining'- a selection of unforgettable and inspirational quotes, was released in December 2018.

Felicity Ward is a multi-award winning comedian. In 2012, Felicity stole the hearts and the stars of the critics with her deeply personal but hilarious show The Hedgehog Dilemma. The critical acclaim arrived en mass and the outstanding reviews rolled in from start to finish. But amongst the accolades, the self-congratulations and the tearstained Angus beef burgers, she realised that when it comes down to it, this is still a ridiculous job. Who else gets a round of applause before they even walk into their office? Who makes people pay for them before they’ve started work? Comedians! That’s who. In this straight-up stand-up show, she takes you through big intros, autotune, her love for junkies, the butchering of language, anxiety attacks, holding a duck and big finishes. She's putting her cards on the table and her dick on her sleeve. Is that how the saying goes? First seen on the Australian comedy scene in 2005 in Ten Network’s popular sketch show The Ronnie Johns Half Hour, Felicity has since gone on to become one of Down-Under’s favourite funny people, appearing in ABC’s prominent music comedy quiz show Spicks and Specks, Thank God You’re Here (Channel 7), Good News Week (Channel Ten) and has her own stand-up comedy special as part of ABC2’s Warehouse Comedy. In 2008, she won Best Newcomer for the Melbourne Airport Award and has since been reeling in awards and nominations. 2012 was her year, with The Hedgehog Dilemma receiving a nomination, if not the award, at every major Australian festival. She has toured internationally from London to LA to Hong Kong to Singapore, and last year co-starred in Working Dog Productions’ (the makers of The Castle and The Dish) Australian comedy feature film Any Questions For Ben? In her brief time in the UK last year she appeared on Russell Howard's Good News (BBC) and from the Edinburgh Fringe was invited to perform The Hedgehog Dilemma in LA at the Hollywood Improv. Since then, she’s appeared at many of her prestigious family barbeques. www.felicityward.com Twitter @felicityward Instagram: @felicityward PRESS ON THE HEDGEHOG DILEMMA ★★★★★ “Ward is a consummate performer… for straight up stand up, [Felicity Ward] will be difficult to beat” INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY ★★★★★ “Will drive you to tears of laughter” BIG ISSUE ★★★★★ “Not only a belly-aching comedienne but a quality actress too” BROADWAYBABY.COM ★★★★½ “A brilliant display of stand-up… she’s got the lot” LONDONISFUNNY.COM ★★★★ “An excellent clowning-cum-confessional character comedy romp” SUNDAY TIMES ★★★★ “A spiky ball of fun to embrace” THE SCOTSMAN ★★★★ “Original, sharp, slightly barmy comedy” EDINBURGH FESTIVAL MAGAZINE ★★★★ “A filthy, high speed hour of breathless laughs” THE LIST ★★★★ ”Very very funny...
