On this episode of TMI, we explore one of the fundamental misunderstandings about health care in the USA: that the bills we receive are the ACTUAL cost of the care. Going through a number of examples, we see that what is being billed is often ten times the cost OR MORE. Because of this deceptive pricing, many people are genuinely concerned when universal coverage comes up and they ask "HOW will it get paid for"? Taking out the need to profit shrinks the pricing to affordable size. Next, GOP officials throughout the country are responding to the reality that mass deportations and trade war tariffs would ruin their local businesses, and have begun to push back to stave off disaster for their constituents. Then, we look at the nominee who has flown completely under the media radar who spells BIG trouble for civil rights in the USA: Harmeet Dhillon. Dhillon's anti-trans litigation history and many other issues make her distinctly abhorrent to hold the office in charge of upholding the civil rights of Americans. Finally, in what is admittedly a bit of schadenfreude, we look at how the proposed merger of Kroger and Albertsons not only failed, but was so spectacularly demolished that Albertsons is suing Kroger over it. All this and more on TMI for Friday, December 13, 2024 – listen in for YOUR Cure for the Common Media!

Drs. Danielle Shelton and Michelle Seguin are family physicians and co-founders of Re:Think Health, a co-learning educational platform for healthcare professionals. In addition to co-teaching medical student electives on lifestyle medicine and innovation + entrepreneurship they are working on their interdisciplinary community offerings. They are passionate about reducing healthcare professional burnout and increasing cross-collaboration. In this episode: We hear how Danielle and Michelle came to family medicine and their reasons for looking for more education to help their patients with lifestyle changes. We discuss their separate starting places in the Clean Your Plate nonprofit in GA and the interest in a Produce Prescription program and how a shared purpose and technology brought them together. Learn about ways to overcome barriers to entry into a new space to create transformational change with the taglines of Dream Big, Be Brave, and Look for Allies. How could you regain your curiosity and creativity in medicine? Healthcare in Medicine is beyond the 4 walls of the clinic! What would medicine look like if we talked to one another? Pearls of Wellness Wisdom (these are just the last three - there are many more hidden in the episode!): 1. Do one thing just for you every day. Time for yourself is not selfish. 2. Create a daily gratitude practice a few minutes before bed. This is a seed of abundance in our life. 3. Creating something out of nothing can be hard. We hope this isn't as hard for the people who come after us.

S1E10: Double Down on Pandemic Inspired Solutions with Health Economist Jane Sarasohn-Kahn (@healthythinker) at Think Health and host Dr. Nick. Healthcare costs have been rising every year for more than 60 years and continue to do so, and not just in the US. All this despite the backdrop of what is an unsustainable economic position and multiple attempts and strategies to reign in these costs. Where does the US fall relative to other countries? In the US healthcare costs almost twice the next closest comparable country while not seeing positive results for the money spent. This financial course is unsustainable. COVID19 wreaked havoc and displaced many previously miss held perspectives and demonstrated that those clinical services who were focused on value over volume did much better throughout the pandemic. With the continued impact of the virus there is wide open opportunities to bring lasting change to our healthcare systems, here in the US and around the world by learning from these experiences and applying the knowledge persistently. This week, your better pill to swallow is accepting the notion that we are broke and solving for this requires different thinking and approaches. Double down on solutions that not only focus on virtual care and capabilities but include the provision of other services – not just broadband access but far beyond into all the Social Determinants of Health. At the time of releasing this episode, wildfires have been raging again in Greece and temperatures have become unbearable across parts of the States, it really is impossible to avoid the issue of climate change. Pete The Builder talks to Steve Randall about how this affects the construction industry and how you and your team can best deal with this huge issue.Skanska's Director of Health, Safety and Well Being, Dylan Roberts, joins us but wearing a slightly different hat. Dylan is part of an industry group steering health in the construction industry. Did you know that:“It's time for change … construction workers in the UK are 100 times more likely to die from an occupational disease than a workplace accident.”Health in Construction GroupDylan talks about how we need to Think Health. The Health in Construction Leadership Group (HCLG) was formed in 2014 after a challenge from HSE's Construction Industry Advisory Committee (ConIAC) for the industry to do more to ‘Think Health' and responding to the influence of ‘Construction 2025', the Industry Strategy for Construction. The group is comprised of contractors, clients, the Health and Safety Executive, professional bodies, trade associations and trade unions. The role of the HCLG is to act as both a stimulus and a catalyst in helping unify the industry in its approach to worker health protection and the promotion, adoption and implementation of best practice processes and initiatives. The HCLG has engaged key business leaders and industry influencers in the construction sector through its Health in Construction CEO Summit events in 2016 and 2017.At these events, CEOs made a commitment to eradicate the thousands of cases of ill health and disease caused every year as a result of exposure to health hazards during construction work, as well as to address the growing incidence of mental ill-health in our workforce. There is much to achieve by the overall target date of 2025. From 2021, the HCLG will focus on the key areas of promoting good mental health, the prevention of respiratory disease and the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. These focus areas will be reflected in the revised strategy which will be published here shortly. This episode of Constructive Voices is sponsored by Viewpoint, a Trimble Company.
