Ellie Pashley is one of Australia's most popular runners, and it's easy to see why! The Tokyo Olympian and mum comes on for a candid conversation about her running career, pregnancy and balancing mum life with her athletic pursuits. This episode is part of a mini-series featuring some of our mighty marathon mums. We talk about some of Ellie's most memorable races like New York Marathon, where she and Sinead Diver got lost on the course (captured on live TV!), and the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst where Ellie's family and friends wore t-shirts sporting a giant print of her face. We dive deep into why Ellie was so determined to get that Olympic qualifying time for Paris 2024, and unpack her attempts to secure it in London, Osaka and Hamburg, with lots of help from her training pals at the Surf Coast Track Club. Ellie Pashley is a marathon runner who represented Australia at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she finished in 23rd place. Ellie started running marathons in 2016, clocking 2:46 in Melbourne on debut. She has since progressed to 2:26, which she ran in Nagoya in 2019. One of her best performances was an 8th place at New York Marathon in 2:27. She also has a 10km PB of 31:18 from the 2019 World Championships in Doha, where she finished 13th. Ellie is also a physiotherapist and co-owner of coaching company, Run Strong, with her coach Julian Spence. She is a mum to Tiggy and Luna (her kelpie). -- Ellie Pashley's Instagram: @ellieopash Run With It Instagram: @runwithit.pod Elise Beacom's Instagram: @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

Joining the army gave her the support to train, created opportunities to grow, provided leadership experience but also challenged her to give up control and trust in her process. Her experiences taught her how to balance rhythm and aggression in her sport and in life. Not only is she a 2021 Tokyo Olympian, but she is a seven-time US National champion, Pan American Games Silver and Gold medalist, and multiple world and national team member in the sport of pentathlon. She is also a Certified Personal Trainer, Pilates and yoga instructor, strength and conditioning coach and running coach. RELEASE - NZ SWIMMING A host of New Zealand records will be up for grabs as New Zealand's elite swimmers gather in Auckland this week for the 2023 Apollo Projects NZ Swimming Championships The National Championships are the premier swimming event in New Zealand and will feature stars including Dame Sophie Pascoe, Lewis Clareburt, Cameron Leslie and Erika Fairweather. The event is being held at the Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatic Centre in Auckland from April 1st to 5th, with heats being contested in the morning and finals in the evening. “This year's nationals are a really key event for us as it doubles as our selection event for the World Aquatics Championships and the World Para Swimming Championship later in the year,” said Swimming New Zealand CEO Steve Johns. “We're expecting our athletes to be at their absolute best as they compete for spots in the teams and we're looking forward to some world class racing over a great few days in the pool.” Johns is encouraging sports fans to get down to the National Aquatic Centre and support New Zealand's rising stars. “The athletes at this event will make up our teams for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games next year so this is a great opportunity to get down and see them race in the flesh. “We're expecting a packed arena with a great atmosphere and we wouldn't be at all surprised to see some records fall. Tickets are available through our website and we'd love to see you there.” Tokyo Olympian and four-time Commonwealth Games medallist Lewis Clareburt says nationals is always a special event. “There's nothing quite like racing in front of your home crowd and it's an event where I always seem to go really well,” said Clareburt. “Our swim team showed what we're capable of at the Commonwealth Games last year. Since then I feel like we've only been getting better, the level is really high right now so I'm really looking forward to seeing what we're capable of over the next few days.” The full event schedule and results are available at this link. This week's guest is Elise Cranny of Bowerman Track Club. Elise is a Tokyo Olympian and 2-time U.S. champ in the 5,000m who came on the podcast to look back on her 2022 season as she wraps up a spin through the European race circuit. We talked about Elise's growth as a professional runner and her relationship with Bowerman coach Jerry Schumacher, including the difficult decision to scratch the U.S. 10,000m champs earlier this year and how it paid off in her racing season. We also talked a lot about the mental side of the sport an the importance of listening to your body and planning for your long-term success over short-term satisfaction. Elise also shared her post-season travel plans, her European laundry strategy, and of course, her love language. This episode of Run Your Mouth is presented by Nike. We've partnered with them to help share athletes' stories in a way that reflects the different reasons we all choose to run, work out, and find our part of the track and field community. In my conversations with athletes in all events and all levels over the years, one common theme I hear over and over again is that finding the unique ways running brings you joy is the best way to develop a happy lifelong relationship with the sport. Come run with Nike. For the everyday and common runner Nike is committed to motivating, standing by, listening to, and helping them from the starting line to the finish line and every inch, meter and mile in between. Whether it's a local race, a major marathon, or just a run with friends, get out there and run. Just do it. Check out the Nike Run Club app and come run with us. On training under Bowerman coach Jerry Schumacher: “I'm a pretty independent person to a fault. I'm still trying to work on being better at communicating [with my coaches], but with Jerry, the energy he brings is what I love most. He helps you believe that you can go do something special.” On skipping the U.S. 10,000m champs: “It was hard to forgo the 10k championships in the moment but in the end, showing up at USAs and focusing on the 5k was the right call. I don't think I'd be still going this far into the season if I didn't make that decision.” On planning for a long professional running career: “In this sport, it's so easy to get caught up in short-term goals. The sport takes so much patience and a lot of times it takes years and years of work before it pays off, but consistent work can be really powerful in the long term.”

Canadian Olympian turned sports agent, Georgia Simmerling, and Maddy Price, Junior Olympian in the 200m and 400m, and Tokyo Olympian in the 400m talk about all things sports agents and representation! As a road and track cyclist as well as Alpine and Ski cross skier, and the first Canadian to ever compete in three different sports in three different Olympics, Georgia shares her experience on both sides of the athlete-agent relationship. Maddy and Georgia discuss how their relationship evolved, and give us tips on what to look for in an agent, what to avoid, and how to advocate for ourselves when beginning to work with an agency. They also share strategies for marketing ourselves on social media, and illuminate what brands might look for when partnering with athletes. “Things are changing globally and now is the time to invest in women's sport and it's happening. TV rights are going up, sponsorship dollars are going up because there's more exposure on TV and they're seeing the opportunity is there for women. So I'm just trying to stir the pot a little bit and have some tough conversations and they're starting to happen.” - Georgia Simmerling

Steve is joined by WBC, IBF and WBO junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor to look back at his controversial win over Jack Catterall back in February. Following a BBC documentary about the fight, Josh talks about why he felt his performance fell short, the abuse he and his family received in the aftermath and how a rematch is all he is thinking about. Steve also pays a visit to heavyweight Joe Joyce who returns to the ring this Saturday and he also catches up with Olympian Kariss Artingstall after she made her professional debut at the weekend.
This week's guest is Karissa Schweizer of Bowerman Track Club. Karissa is a Tokyo Olympian, the American record holder in the 3,000m, the #2 all-time 5,000-meter runner with a 14:26 personal best, and as of a few weeks ago, the national champion in the 10,000m who's headed back to Eugene this week to chase at least one more national title. We had an awesome conversation right after the Portland Track Festival last week (which is why during the episode we talk about entries for USAs with a little less clarity than we have now), and we covered everything from coming back from surgery last fall; growing up in a big running family; and how the culture at BTC has changed over the years. I also really enjoyed our conversation about the running culture in Portland Oregon and how that factors into the life of a professional runner. This episode was brought to you by Summer of Hayward. On bouncing back after surgery: “Last year there were so many times when I felt like I was limited by my body and my mind, and being pain-free allows you to dig into deeper levels. There was just no way the race could go poorly.” On training with her top rivals: “Even though it's an individual sport in some ways, you can make it a team sport. Elise and I have worked together in races, especially in trials races where top 3 matters most. Especially on the world level it's really nice to have someone you train with day in and day out when you're navigating the biggest stage.” On navigating the negative press: “We have almost a stronger team culture now because we've been through a lot. Everyone who stayed has had to get through a hard year together, and the group is closer as a result.” On goals moving forward: “At the end of the day, getting a medal on the world stage is my biggest goal. Records get broken, times get broken. But getting a medal – you can never take that away.”
