The Inner Circle with Carrie Doll

Lauren Regula's first appearance with softball Team Canada came at the 1999 Junior World Championships in Taipei. She joined the senior national team in 2002, helping Canada to a ninth-place finish at the world championships. She made her Olympic debut at Athens 2004, starting five games and being in the winning pitcher in all three of Canada's victories.  Following a fifth-place finish at the 2006 World Championships, Regula missed the entire 2007 season with a wrist injury. But she was healthy enough to return to the Olympic Games at Beijing 2008, helping Canada to a fourth-place finish as she recorded two victories.  After the heartbreaking loss in the bronze medal game in Beijing, Regula retired and didn't pick up a ball for eight years. She started a family, having three kids. She has since been open about the postpartum depression she began to suffer from in 2012. It continued until 2018 when she says she hit “rock bottom” and finally got the help she needed in the form of therapy and hormone therapy. After a long road to recovery, she has said she feels like she has “a new lease on life”.  It was in 2016, while she was still struggling with postpartum depression, that Regula came out of retirement and pitched her way back to a starting role with Team Canada, winning a bronze medal at the WBSC World Championships. In late 2018, she suffered a small tear in her left hip labrum and did not throw again until she was invited to join Canada's training camp from which the 2020 Olympic team would be selected.  In her third Olympic appearance, Regula pitched 5.1 innings in three games. She struck out seven and did not give up a single hit or run as Canada won the bronze medal. Regula played collegiately at Oklahoma State University, primarily as a pitcher but also in the outfield when not on the circle. Over her four seasons with the Cowgirls she was a member of the All-Big12 conference team each year. In her senior season in 2003, she struck out 451 batters on her way to a 26-10 record, was awarded the OSU Female Athlete of the Year and named a First Team All-American. After having finished at OSU, Regula joined the National Pro Fastpitch league for two seasons. She posted the first no-hitter in Chicago Bandits history in 2005 on her way to a 17-1 record, earning Pitcher of the Year honours. In this episode, Lauren breaks down her struggles with guilt over being away for the Games, her love of her family, what gives her strength and drive, and shares the importance of perseverance in the face of hardship. She's such an inspiration, sharing lessons we can all apply in our every day life about the importance of showing up for yourself, surrounding yourself with people who also support you, and giving yourself the grace to be the best version of you that you can be.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

During one of our weekly Data Driven Q and A sessions with partners and clients, Gaye Lynn Wilson, VP of National Pro Fastpitch, asked a great question - how should our business leverage TikTok to promote an upcoming event? In this case the event she was referencing is the 2019 NPF Draft, scheduled for April 15 in Nashville, TN. First of all, to set the stage for my answer, I talk about TikTok. What is it, exactly? Well, if you had heard of the lip syncing app Musical.ly, TikTok purchased Musical.ly and now basically is Musical.ly. TikTok, according to Variety and courtesy of FangDigital.com, has more than 80 million US users, and almost 800 million users when you include its international audience. Reference: https://fangdigital.com/using-tiktok-to-promote-your-business/ And if you remember the six second video app Vine, TikTok is like Vine, combined with Carpool Karaoke (a short on the Late Late Show with James Corden). Service providers, like Dentist - Dr. Chithra Durgam DDS have used Musical.ly, now TikTok to promote their businesses, and Sports and Entertainment companies like NPF can definitely leverage their assets in terms of players, mascots, cheer squads, coaches, etc. to create short, fun videos with music that are relevant to their brand. The example I talk about in this video refers to using the players "at bat" song or future "at bat" song, in the case of NPF draftees, and having them create short music videos where they lip sync to their future at bat song. What I don't mention in the video is that it could also be used to take highlights and simply chop them up in post production to make them shorter, like top 10 plays, but only showing 1-2 seconds of each play. I think the biggest thing to remember though is that leveraging TikTok is just like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google My Business, Pinterest and others.... IT'S ABOUT CREATING THE CONTENT CONSISTENTLY and making it relevant and native to the audience on each platform. It's not about simply "being on a platform to check the box." It's about meeting your audience where they are, with a message that's relevant to them and doing it consistently over the long term. The actual question is: How can you repurpose your current content to consistently make it relevant to an audience on TikTok that you're ready to engage with over the next 24-36 months? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/paulhickey/support

In today's episode I interview professional softball player and founder of Be The Momentum  Emily Allard. Emily played college softball at Northwestern and continued on at the professional level with the Chicago Bandits, where her team has won two back to back championships. Emily is currently coming back from a concussion injury and is refreshingly open about her feelings of hopelessness and uncertainty of returning to play in the future. I really appreciated Emily's rawness. In our conversation Emily talks about: -how childhood bullying led her to fall in love with softball -where she gets the motivation to keep coming back after battling injuries for 6 years -why none of her teammates want to stand behind her in the autograph line -the Chicago Bandit's team culture that let them to back-to-back National Pro Fastpitch championship titles -the most unexpected and best place she traveled to with @BeTheMomentum,  a slapping program where she coaches across the country and empowers kids on and off the softball field -the gut-wrenching pain of not feeling like a part of the team while being injured and how she manages those feelings -her morning routine that must involve a Starbucks run And more. Enjoy my conversation with the high-spirited, kid-loving Emily Allard.   Resources Follow Emily and Be The Momentum:  Instagram: @eallard24 @be_themomentum  Twitter: @eallard24 @be_themomentum  BeTheMomentumSoftball.com  Click HERE to become a part of Friday Feelz Click HERE for a list of the 10 books I believe ever female athlete MUST read. The league will also most likely provide athletes for the 2020 Olympic Games. Attendees of Akron Racers games are treated to a family-friendly experience and an up-close look at the players, who Arrietta says play for the love of the game. Welcome to Episode 11 of the Front Office Exchange podcast, featuring Cheri Kempf, Commissioner of the National Pro Fastpitch Softball League and current analyst for ESPN's softball coverage. Cheri's energy and passion were evident right out of the gate. She has led the NPF since 2007, and we discussed her daily fight to grow media exposure and sponsorship opportunities for her league and players. As a TV sports analyst herself, however, she acknowledges that there is a fine line that exists in this process as well. Cheri is also an entrepreneurial instructor who started her own softball training facility after her time as a player, which included a stint with Team USA. Over the course of our conversation she talked about not only what skills and traits she looks for in her NPF staff members and how critical it is for them to be able to wear many hats, but she also offers advice to those aspiring to get into sports television. Big thanks both to Cheri and to you for listening.
