Mack oversees the field and multi events for the  Bears.In the 2023-24 season Mack's athletes took a third- place medal at the MVC Outdoor Championship. In his first season as part of the staff, Mack saw two of his athletes to Missouri Valley Conference Championships medals in both high jump and long jump. His javelin squad also built on its strong foundation during the 2022-23 season as his top finisher threw to 44.54 meters. The Bears also placed three athletes in the top-10 of the event at the conference championships.Coach Mack comes to MSU with over eight years of experience coaching at the collegiate level. Most recently, he served as the sprints, jumps, and strength and conditioning coach at Central Washington University where he was responsible for facilitating the strength and conditioning program,coaching and recruiting. Since Sept. 2014, Mack has produced three All-Americans, 15 conference champions, 28 all-conference athletes and 19 Top-10 all-conference performers. Kevan “Flea” Hueftle We are proud to present U.S. Paralympic Athlete, Rancher, and Father Kevan Hueftle. In 2005 Kevan also known as “Flea” was involved in a hunting accident that led to an amputation of his left leg below the knee. Consequently, Flea struggled with alcoholism due to the tragic loss of his limb and the constant pain he suffered as an amputee. Through perseverance and grit, Flea decided to defy the odds and would eventually compete on the US Track and Field teams and medal as an elite Paralympic Athlete. Kevan is a beacon of hope for anyone struggling with limb loss or addiction.Kevan is a husband, father, rancher, and motivational speaker. He has been a member of the U.S. Paralympic track and field team. Works at Lazy Creek Beef Company LLCstarting when he was 20 years old. He had been hunting and while pulling the gun out of the truck, it went off, shooting him in the foot. After several surgeries his leg was amputated below the knee.“To say my life has been easy … there have been parts that have been harder than others,” he said. “I'm still living a dream of mine.”At the time of the accident, he was on the track and field team at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.Hueftle talked about fitting a prosthetic. He said the first seven years were miserable and the prosthetic didn't fit. She suffers from hypothyroidism, preventing her muscles from growing back at an average rate, and describes the mentality she must have to keep working despite these physical problems.  Discussing the lack of money in the sport, and trying to explain the feeling of having one 12-second race dictate whether she can afford rent and pay her bills. Lay is extremely independent and without a sponsor every race matters for her since there is no guaranteed money. Yet coming from working two jobs bartending late nights and early morning work outs, Lay touches on how she doesn't fear the normal life like her competitors do since she has always had to work for what she wants, following in the footsteps of her mother. Today on the podcast is a US Champ, Freddie Crittenden!This is one of my all-time favorite episodes of the podcast. Freddie's story is nothing short of inspiring, and boy, am I fired up after listening to it. For those that aren't familiar, Freddie is a talented track and field athlete known for his exceptional hurdling skills. Throughout his career, he has participated in various prestigious events and achieved notable successes. At the 2019 IAAF World Relays, he earned a gold medal in the shuttle hurdles relay. Additionally, he secured a silver medal in the 110m hurdles at the 2019 Pan American Games. His achievements extend to international events, including a gold medal at the 2016 NACAC U23 Championships, gold at the 2022 NACAC Champions, and a bronze at the 2019 Nanjing World Challenge. Recently, he won the 2023 US Track and Field Indoor Championships in the 60mH. Most recently, Freddie placed third at the 2023 US Championships in Eugene earlier this month in the 100mH sending him to the World Championships held in Budapest next month. In this conversation, Freddie goes through working two jobs in addition to track, having his boss be his wife, almost quitting track, his start in the sport, his future ambitions in the sport, his journey with media, and much more!
