A little over 26 weeks away from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Hudson sat down with Mike Grady, a 2020 Tokyo Olympian competing on the US National Team.Grady graduated from Cornell University in 2019, where he rowed under Todd Kennett ‘91, on the Men's Heavyweight team. The connection that he shares with his teammates is evident when surrounded by each other… brotherhood, as some coin it. Nonetheless, the bonds he has created with the guys that he's been able to row with along the years, whether that be at Central Catholic, Cornell, the U19, U23, and even Senior National Team, is one to none.Everyone has their own favorite qualities of crew, but for Mike, it is the opportunity to race. We discuss the overall dynamics of California Rowing Club, coached by Mike Teti, Skip Kielt & Tim McLaren, impact of Justin Best (a pair partner and boatmate of his prior to college), and more! Many of you may or may not have heard of a man by the name of Clark Dean, the 6'5" USA Olympian and Harvard Men's Heavyweight from the town of Sarasota, Florida. Well, fortunate for you, and here at the For Stars Podcast, we got him spotlighted, talking about United States Rowing as a whole both at the junior, collegiate, and olympic level. Clark has made a lasting impact on the past, present, and future of the USA with his intellect and skill in the rowing shell. During his 8th grade year (2014), Clark took his first challenge in rowing at Sarasota Crew, the nationally-ranked youth rowing program here in the States, leaving middle school with a 5th place in the nation competing in the Lightweight Youth 8+ at just 14 years of age. Freshman year of high school, Clark and his team got 7th in the Men's Youth 8+ (2015), 3rd in 2016 & 2017, leaving high school with a Gold Medal at the national stage in 2018. All while, competing with and for the United States Junior National Teams, during the summers of 2016-2018. Clark spent the summer of 2016 after his sophomore year making the USA U19 World's 4x, (having 3 Sarasota boys in that boat) and getting Bronze that year. The following year (2017), Clark got Gold in the USA U19 World's 1x amongst all countries, also competing in the 4+ with a 6th place finish. In 2018, Clark continued the streak of Gold Medals in that event going undefeated in the USA U19 World's 1x.Going into his freshmen year of men's collegiate rowing, Clark signed with Harvard, getting 2nd at Eastern Sprints and 3rd at IRA's. That summer of 2019, Clark skipped the U23 level and went right to the Senior National Team, stroking the straight four. He qualified the boat for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which was taken place in 2021, also stroking the straight four. Clark's journey is not done in the sport of rowing, and although this is his last year of racing for the Crimson, he is eager to help the next generation of rowers get to the next level, so be sure to reach out to Clark on Instagram @clark_dean to get some coaching/instruction.We talk about injury prevention, where he sees US Rowing in the next several years, the lack of funding in America for the Senior National Team level rowing (which is the only non-government funded rowing body in the World), reasoning to enroll at Harvard, and his experience with Mike Teti over at the California Rowing Club. Today's headlines across the sports pages and beyond is the landmark news that following years of dispute and disharmony women have finally achieved parity in US soccer and will at last play on a level playing field with the men. The two Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA), which run through 2028, achieve equal pay through identical economic terms. These economic terms include identical compensation for all competitions, including the FIFA World Cup, and the introduction of the same commercial revenue sharing mechanism for both teams. The agreements will ensure that U.S. Soccer's Senior National Team players remain among the highest paid in the world. Welcome back to another episode of the Third Sub Podcast! In this episode, Alex and Sam are back, as usual, this time joined by a very special guest, Mitchell Tierney of Waking the Red and Darby Magazine. In this, they chat all things Canadian Men's soccer in the midst of a busy week for the Canadian Men's National Team, at both the senior and U23 level. After a memorable 2003 NBA draft that included four eventual iconic champions that would enrich the 2008 Redeem Team including LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, three of these young stars are thrust into the spotlight at the 2004 Olympics. The experience is anything but golden and the U.S. Olympic program arrives at a crossroads. On this episode you'll hear from Dwyane Wade (Redeem Teamer, 3-time NBA champion with the Miami Heat, 13-time NBA All-Star), Carmelo Anthony (Redeem Teamer, 10-time NBA All-Star and current Portland Trail Blazer), Deron Williams (NBA champion, former Utah Jazz point guard, and Redeem Team member), Grant Wahl (Former senior writer for Sports Illustrated, Fox Sports correspondent, host of podcasts including "Fútbol with Grant Wahl" and "American Prodigy: Freddy Adu"), Craig Miller (USA Basketball's Chief Communications Officer extraordinaire, headed PR for the 1992 Dream Team and the 2008 USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team), and Sean Ford (USA Basketball's National Team Director). FROM THE EPISODE: JACK MCCALLUM: Ladies and gentlemen, Darko Miličić went 2nd to the Detroit Pistons before Carmelo Anthony, who was 3rd before Chris Bosh, who was 4th. And before Dwyane Wade who was 5th. So that is fully, as we said before, that is 1/3 of the kids who five years later would be on The Redeem team. But that draft interestingly gave us those guys. I think that's probably ranked among the greatest drafts of all time. Do you have any memories of other great drafts? J.A. ADANDE: It’s right up there. To me, I think the standard has to be the 1984 draft. If nothing else it gave us Michael Jordan, but also Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley, John Stockton's in there as well. So if you think about stocking Olympic teams, you've got Barkley, Jordan, and John Stockton. So there's a third of the 1992 Dream Team comes out of that one draft, similar to the way that the 2003 draft stocked the Redeem Team of 2008. JACK MCCALLUM: Yeah. Another great draft was your guy: Kobe Bryant in 1996. You got Kobe, you got Ray Allen, you got Steve Nash. You got — J.A. ADANDE: Allen Iverson at the top of that — JACK MCCALLUM: AI was right there, Peja Stojaković, Marcus Camby, Stephon Marbury, a bunch of guys… Derek Fisher, who watched for a hundred years J.A. ADANDE: Won five championships with Kobe. JACK MCCALLUM: …making jump shots out in LA. But 1996 was a great NBA draft. What's to me is why — I don't remember, maybe because nobody gives too much of a damn about Cleveland, but was there ever an examination of how LeBron James got to Cleveland? You remember Patrick Ewing and the New York conspiracy? Good ol’ LeBron only had about a 22% chance of going to a Cleveland, but nevertheless, there he was. I don't think there has ever been one athlete — correct me if I'm wrong — who has ever brought more of a renaissance to one city. When Michael Jordan went to Chicago, Chicago was already a pretty damn great city, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Kobe later. LA was a pretty good city, too; they had other stuff going on. LeBron James to the Cleveland Cavaliers? That set things off, man. J.A. ADANDE: That was everything. There is that great YouTube video. The Cleveland Tourism Board or something like that, it was like a mock Cleveland promotional video which really pointed out all the things that were *wrong* with Cleveland. But one of the lines in there is, “Our economy is built on LeBron James.” — Learn more about the podcast at DiversionPodcasts.com Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

Legendary UCLA mens’ basketball coach John Wooden famously instructed his team, every year on the first day of practice, how to put on their socks and tie their shoes. I think it's the little things that really count. The first thing I would show our players at our first meeting was how to take a little extra time putting on their shoes and socks properly. The most important part of your equipment is your shoes and socks. You play on a hard floor. So you must have shoes that fit right. And you must not permit your socks to have wrinkles around the little toe--where you generally get blisters--or around the heels. It took just a few minutes, but I did show my players how I wanted them to do it. Hold up the sock, work it around the little toe area and the heel area so that there are no wrinkles. Smooth it out good. Then hold the sock up while you put the shoe on. And the shoe must be spread apart--not just pulled on the top laces. You tighten it up snugly by each eyelet. Then you tie it. And then you double-tie it so it won't come undone--because I don't want shoes coming untied during practice, or during the game. I don't want that to happen. I'm sure that once I started teaching that many years ago, it did cut down on blisters. It definitely helped. But that's just a little detail that coaches must take advantage of, because it's the little details that make the big things come about. -- John Wooden as told to Devin Gordon When you are in the leadership business… what do you when the entire world gets turned upside down and everyone is looking at you for direction? How do you find the little details in order to bring the big things about? On this week’s InSecurity, Matt Stephenson has a chat with Jillian Lappetito, president of Leaderology and a member of 4 NCAA Champion and 2 World Champion US National Waterpolo teams. Influenced by the leadership of an Army Ranger father and world class coaches and teammates, Jillian now channels her experience into coaching and mentoring others. He is the regular host of the InSecurity podcast and video series at events around the globe. I have spent the last 10 years in the world of Data Protection and Cybersecurity. Since 2016, I have been with Cylance (now BlackBerry) extolling the virtues of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and how, when applied to network security, can wrong-foot the bad guys. Prior to the COVID shutdown, I was on the road over 100 days a year doing live malware demonstrations for audiences from San Diego to DC to London to Abu Dhabi to Singapore to Sydney. One of the funniest things I've ever been a part of was blowing up a live instance of NotPetya 6 hours after the news broke... in Washington DC... directly across the street from FBI HQ... as soon as we activated it a parade of police cars with sirens blaring roared past the building we were in. I'm pretty they weren't there for us, but you never know... Every week on the InSecurity Podcast, I get to interview interesting people doing interesting things all over the world of cybersecurity and the extended world of hacking. Sometimes, that means hacking elections or the coffee supply chain... other times that means social manipulation or the sovereign wealth fund of a national economy. InSecurity is about talking with the people who build, manage or wreck the systems that we have put in place to make the world go round... Can’t get enough of Insecurity? Key Discussion Points: When was a time you struggled in your sport or life in general? How did you mentally handle being one of the bench players? When was a time during a match that you made a mistake, and what did you do to move on from it? When was your lightbulb moment? When was one of your proudest moments? What lead you to your studies that you’ve recently completed? What is your current plan to be successful in your life and sport? Key Lessons: Accept failure “We all fail on a daily basis. I think its important that we learn from our failures.” GK @ 10:22 We need to learn to silence our egos and look objectively at the situation we are in “After all, its the National Team and all the best players from your country are playing there..you have to give them respect..good players, they are not just random people on the court.” GK @ 13:16 Focus on your skills, getting better, and proving yourself at every practice Competition within the team is what helps evolve players Egos can be good and bad in some ways Find a way to compete and add value to your teammates, make them better Do your best to move on quickly from the mistakes you make while competing “I talked to myself.. ‘the set is gone, it was just one point, you made a mistake, it was not your fault, focus on the next set, start over, do your thing, try to keep in mind the goals you have, focus on the small things, FORGET about it.” GK @ 17:28 The whole team loses/wins a game, not just one individual If you dwell on the last mistake, you are most likely to keep making more Sometimes you have to change your scenery or location to be closer to your success The most successful people are those who challenge themselves, looking outside the box Have your OWN vision for what you want in the future and create small goals to achieve that vision ATHLETE'S TIP JAR What is the best advice you have ever received? Always see the positive in every situation; things are how they are, its in our power to understand them how we want. What is the first thing you do when arriving to a new team or arena? Team: I look forward to the first couple of practices so I can see how the coach is working with the team, so I can understand their perspective. Arena: I check out the lights, they can be disturbing sometimes What personal habit do you believe has contributed most to your success? When I start something, I really want to finish it. Sleep & Morning ritual: I sleep between 8-10 hours; I have breakfast, coffee/tea, I am up a few hours before practice, on the court half an hour before doing warm up/ mobility exercises. What is one way you’d like to improve yourself? Always try to learn something new, reading books How do you cross-train to stay fit when you aren’t playing your sport? I go swimming a few times a week What is one book you would give away as a gift and why? The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday; I would give this book to anyone who is struggling with something in life, sports, business, etc. If you had a do-over, knowing everything you know now with all of the new resources (Beyond Athletic Podcasts, ESS Mentors, etc.) ,what would you have done differently and why? I think things would have happened quicker for me, after listening to other’s experiences on a podcast, I would have learned a lot quicker.
