In an article titled, ‘Secondhand Luxury: Opportunity or Threat' BoF raises the question: what's the right path for brands? Buyback and then resell their own goods, or route them to resale sites, which give brands a cut of sales? The growth of resale is all about brands... imagine shopping on The Real Real if none of the items were branded. Customers are shifting their behavior toward resale based on affording brands they otherwise could not access. This in turn creates both threats and opportunities for brands themselves as BoF points out.Historically, brands have been concerned about the cannibalization of new sales, a concern that a recent Boston Consulting Group (BCG) study found to be unfounded. BCG data shows that the secondary market actually stimulates sales of new luxury goods. Additionally, the study found 71% of buyers of pre-owned items tended to buy products and brands they could not afford new. This suggests that secondhand products widen the market for high-end brands and can serve as potential gateways for first-time buyers. As The Sourcing Journal piece, ‘Take-Back Programs Are Gaining Steam. Do They Actually Work?' pointed out, not all resale programs are based on profitable business models for trade-in. Trade-in models where brands only benefit from gift cards are essentially marketing programs. There are also risks for brands that solely rely on 3rd party marketplaces to maintain brand standards and authentication. WWD's this week covered Vestiaire Collective's offer to work with luxury brands to learn and train authenticators to spot details on the most sought-after items. Bloomberg Law went deeper into the increased risk to brand IP and commented that such partnerships may allow brands to participate in the product authentication process, which helps to prevent brand dilution while still enjoying the benefits of participating in the circular economy.Brand IP is the ‘key to the castle' for a brand. Brands should be wary about educating anyone beyond the obvious signs of fake products as they will lose control. As the Bloomberg article rightly points out, we will get to a point where brands will use technology to track and identify fraudulent items but we are 5+ years away. In the meanwhile, brands can be strategic about 3rd party marketplaces while making sure their long-term needs are being met as the secondary market grows.A good example of this was The Real Real's partnership with 11 Honoré. @11 Honeré and visionary founder Patrick Herning have been pioneering a path to more inclusive sizing for luxury. The partnership with The Real Real will further this mission by adding some 430 styles of extended-size luxury items to its range of consigned goods and bring awareness to 11 Honeré.It's key for brands to realize the importance of their items in the secondary market as the market grows. In the end, there is no substitute for owning your future as a brand, and in this case, that involves engaging in the trade-in and resale of your products. The So What-There is no substitute for brands to stay close to their customers by buying back and reselling their items.-Brands need to look after their own long-term interests including protecting their IP. Nobody will protect that other than the brand.Resources:Footwear News | How Trove's New CEO Gayle Tait Is Helping Brands Like Allbirds & On to Resell Used MerchandiseFootwear NewsAfter taking over as CEO of Trove, Gayle Tait is focused on creating ways to make the secondhand marketplace a more profitable business for retailers and brands. As the appetite to make a positive impact on the environment increases with consumers, retailers and brands like Allbirds and On are turning to Trove for a profitable way to scale their recommerce programs.Apparel brands must note promising resale growth in APACJust-StyleGlobalData reported that the apparel market in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region is expected to reach a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.3% between 2020-2025, with 27% of shoppers intending to purchase clothing via resale in the next 12 months. With consumers in APAC becoming increasingly more aware of the environmental impact of the fashion industry, will their favorite brands and retailers implement sustainable initiatives in time to keep their business?WWD | It's a Start: The RealReal Extends it's Size Offerings With 11 Honore PartnershipWWDFrom Jimmy Choo to 11 Honore, The RealReal is making sure that it has something for everyone. For its newest partnership with 11 Honore, The RealReal will add 430 styles in inclusive sizes. Shoppers that consign plus size apparel within the next six months will receive 30% off their complete transaction.Glossy | Brands are pitching resale as an affordable holiday alternativeGlossyBrands are seeing the value of resale and adjusting their marketing holiday season campaigns accordingly. For example, Queenly had a viral TikTok that got over 2 million views, where they offered a referral program for every new customer. Recurate's Peak Design, which sells handbags, said this Black Friday they are putting all of their focus on resale after a very successful Earth Day campaign, where they saw a 600% increase without decline in regular sales.Vogue Business | Fast Fashion enters the resale game, but don't call it sustainabilityVogue BusinessIs launching a resale platform without reducing your overall output truly sustainable? Many would say no. Big fast fashion brands like Shein, Zara, and Pretty Little Thing are eager to enter the resale space, launching pre-loved marketplaces directly on their websites, but critics are saying that if these brands actually wanted to be sustainable, they'd up the quality of their garments. Vestiaire Collective Talks Trust, Tradesy, and Fighting Fast FashionWWDVestiaire introduced its first ever trust report, highlighting its verification process, counterfeit detection rate and many other impressive achievements. Vestiaire Collective's mission is to be the most trusted resale platform, and by sharing this report, it is aiming to increase its transparency and brand image within its community. There's nothing circular or sustainable about Shein's new resale platformDAZEDShein released a pre-loved marketplace (Shein Exchange) with the false promise to create a cultural movement of circularity for its community. The marketplace is nothing more than a facade behind an alternative motive to promote more extraction, more production, more waste, and more profit. How Fashion Brands Can Protect Their IP in the Recommerce MarketBloomberg LawAs the recommerce market grows increasingly more important to consumers, brands need to adjust their sustainability metrics, while maintaining brand authenticity and avoiding counterfeits. Retailers and brands are turning to recommerce partnerships, blockchain, and negotiated agreements that help protect the brand's IP. The Business of Fashion | Secondhand Luxury: Opportunity or ThreatBOFThere is a disconnect in the booming secondhand luxury market. Brands such as Balenciaga and Gucci are truly leaning into the secondhand movement with the creation of resale marketplaces. On the other hand, brands including Chanel and Hermès are still discouraged to adopt resale models in fear that this will drive their normal customer base away from in-store shopping. Sourcing Journal | Take-Back Programs Are Gaining Steam. Do They Actually Work?Sourcing Journal As many brands and retailers join the fight against climate change through circular and sustainable programs, the true lift is daunting. The underlying bias around these intiatives is that production and consumption will go down as these new business models arise around the care and circulation of used items. However, that is not the case as it's unclear if resale and takeback programs, are providing the solution they claim to be.

If you're a senior citizen who's found that your golden years of retirement aren't so golden, take heart. There are plenty of things you can do to make the money you have go further. We'll give you a whole batch today on MoneyWise. Okay, we've got some great ways that seniors can save money, but really, these tips will stretch a buck no matter what age you are. TIPS FOR SAVING MONEY Always use the self-checkout aisle if one's available. Studies show that people actually spend less using those machines because they're really paying attention to the prices rolling up on the screen. That cuts down on impulse buying. Knowing that you're going to self-checkout is a psychological aid for sticking to your shopping list. And have you seen the price of beef lately? You can get around that by using ground chicken in your recipes like chile and tacos, instead of hamburger. If you simply must have a steak buy a cheaper cut and marinate it a day or two in the fridge to tenderize it. Speaking of the fridge, set aside a space on one shelf for stuff nearing the end of its life, and then look for ways to add it to your recipes. Or get really creative and make something entirely new out of your odd bits of cheese, leftover rice or pasta, and last week's fruit and veggies. And when you're cooking on top of the range, did you know that the burner you choose can either save or cost you money? You want the size burner that matches the bottom of whatever pot or pan you're using, whether electric or gas. If the flames are curling up the side of the pan, or you can see a red coil outside the pot, you're just wasting energy. Now, what about your oven? Are you using it to cook or heat up a small dish with just a serving or two? That also wastes energy. Use your toaster oven if the dish will fit. It preheats faster and uses less than half the energy of the average oven. Or better yet pop it in the microwave to save even more on energy costs. Now, you don't have to give up fashion just because you're living on a fixed income. You can now shop at online, upscale thrift shops for your clothing needs. Sites like ThredUp, Poshmark, The Real Real and Tradesy carry gently used clothing for a fraction of what it costs new. Will anyone really know if you're wearing last year's style? And who doesn't like giving gift cards to the kids and grandkids? You probably didn't know that you can buy them on the cheap at sites like Raise, Gift Card Bin and Gift Card Granny. A card that someone else didn't want could be a great birthday gift for a loved one. We'll put links to all of these sites in today's show notes. Now, let's say you forgot to pay a credit card bill and got a late fee. Or maybe you were dinged for insufficient funds at your bank. If this is just a one time thing, your bank or card issuer will probably waive the fee if you ask. It's worth a call, anyway. Do you have an unlimited data plan for your phone? That could be a money waster, especially if you're at home a lot and using your wifi most of the time. Instead, call your provider to look over your usage and choose a lower price plan that still works for you. Or better yet, get a prepaid plan. They tend to be cheaper and usually won't require a contract. And while you're at it, ditch your phone insurance. Have you read the fine print on that agreement? They tend to restrict the type of phone they'll cover, plus they often come with a high deductible and lots of red tape to replace a lost, stolen or broken phone, not to mention the fee you're paying every month. Instead, keep the cost of replacing your phone in your emergency fund. That's what it's there for. Okay, time to sit back, relax and watch your favorite streaming TV show. But are you wasting money there, too? Possibly. Take a close look at the terms of agreement for your streaming services. Many of them allow a certain number of household or family members to use their service. You can go halvsies with your kids on streaming apps that you share. So much for watching the tube, now you want to get out of the house, and you're driving down the road. Did you know that every time you touch the brake pedal, it costs you money? Now, obviously, you have to brake. I'm a big fan of it. But the truth is, when you brake to slow down or come to a stop, you're wasting the energy gas that it took to get up to speed. You can minimize that by coasting as much as possible. If you see the light's red up ahead, take your foot off the gas early rather than stomping on the brakes at the last minute. Your brakes will last longer, too. And for heaven's sake, don't tailgate. It's not only dangerous, it requires more frequent braking and acceleration. Keep a safe distance and you'll not only arrive alive you'll find yourself at the gas pump less often. On today's program, Rob also answers listener questions: ● How can you invest without fear of losing your money? ● What are the options for paying for assisted living care? ● Does it make sense to pay your mortgage more frequently or pay more on a basic monthly basis? ● What is a SEP IRA? ● What taxes can you expect to pay on the sale of a second home? Happy Earth Day, Fashion Friends! Do you want to know one of Holly's top Fashion Crimes? Fashion that ruins the planet. #Ugh #HowRude #NoFashionCrimes #stopit Get the full episode at https://apple.co/2XXKHfC, or wherever you get your podcasts. It does not take a brain surgeon to figure out that if we continue to overuse resources and throw everything we buy into trash piles, we will not have a place to actually WEAR fashion one day very soon. #facts So, in honor of this day, we would like to share Holly's “Sustainable Fashion for Dummies” episode with everyone to help explain what ‘sustainable fashion' is, and how everyone can easily play a big part in saving the planet in small ways. #yourewelcome Every day, in our opinion, should be Earth Day. We should be reveling in the beauty that all the Earth gives to us. We should be appreciative and treat it with kindness, and not use and abuse our resources. Responsible sustainability in the fashion industry has been a gigantic, gargantuan topic for the past 20-30 years. While researching the topic for this week's episode, we found zillions of charts and graphs, explaining how much money each country in the world actually spends on clothes, especially fast fashion, every single year. And how much of it gets trashed. The amount of this just in the United States alone will make you cry. Nobody can imagine what “92 million tons of waste” in a landfill actually looks like. Not only do unwanted clothes end up in landfills, but the emissions to produce these items pollute our air and natural water systems. And the faster the garments are produced, the more damage it causes to the environment. Fashion Crime #1 = Fast Fashion For anyone who doesn't know what “Fast Fashion” is, it's literally a 15-20 day turnaround from concept to production. And just as fast as the consumer buys it, it either falls apart and is thrown away, or the trend has already changed. Add to that the transportation cost to quickly deliver what consumers buy each day – and the carbon footprint is now bigger than one of Shaq's tennis shoes. Fun Fashion Fact: The normal fashion fabrication cycle is 4-6 months. That is from design to production to delivery. That takes time and money, but you end up with quality. Not quantity. Understanding what a sustainable product is, especially in the fashion industry, is a real game-changer for how consumers can buy, what they want to buy, and what they actually think they need. Consumer behavior can actually dictate how the planet will be affected, how it will work for future generations, and how much damage will be done. The more we buy, the more damage we cause. Today, suppliers cannot keep up with demand. There is high demand for clothing and luxury goods due to celebrity culture and “the more stuff” culture. We are all guilty of it. But what we CAN do is change our type of consumption: Quality over quantity goes a long way. The facts and the numbers are not only shocking, but it's alarming. What are we thinking when fashion companies brag about numbers like “114 billion garments sold last year” and “$500 billion worth of clothing waste and fabric” in landfills? And please don't fall for the standard BS with claims from stores like ASOS, H&M, Shein, Boohoo, and Zara, who are guilty of “greenwashing,” which is saying they carry “some” sustainable items (and market them) to offset the rest of their line, and not practicing sustainable practices the rest of the time. So, what can fashion-conscious people do to make a difference? The answer is to buy smarter: it's called “circular fashion.” What is “Circular Fashion?” This term is defined as clothes, shoes, or accessories that are designed, sourced, produced, and provided with the intention of being used and circulated responsibly and effectively in society for as long as possible in their most valuable form, and then return safely to the biosphere when no longer of human use. What does that mean in English? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair. #PREACH Reduce: Purchase only what you need. Buy what you like, but buy what you need. Once you have what you need, you won't “want” so much. Shop Small: whether it's a hometown business owner, or something handmade on Etsy, shop from small producers and creators. You will find more original items, more creative and interesting things, and will be supporting small industries that have less impact on the planet. Reuse: Clean out your closet. Regularly. Donate, donate, donate. Not to give stuff to your neighbor, or to your daughter who lives in the same house. Give to organizations that help others by giving them gently-used items that they desperately need: socks, coats, shoes, bed linens, towels, blankets, eyeglasses, hats, and sunglasses. Imagine if you did not have those items. Those are the things people in need, need. Recycle: Shop on Poshmark, Tradesy, The RealReal, and Re/Done, or shop locally at consignment and vintage stores. Second-use items of high quality have value, are highly sought after, and are generally seen in the fashion world as being on-trend. Repair: Whatever happened to repairing quality items instead of throwing them away? Shoes can be re-soled, buttons can be replaced, or even upgraded! Handbags can be reconditioned. We have simply lost the art of fixing, sewing, and repairing because “new stuff” is so much easier to get. “Donate it to a charity that can use the items of the past person's life to better someone else's life.” Where to find sustainable fashion - and is it even fashionable? Do not confuse good design, constructed with quality and sustainable materials, with lower quality fashion. In fact, to achieve this balance is a high form of art (in our humble opinion). Holly has created a new Pinterest board full of gorgeous designs from up-and-coming designers and brands you need to know! Don't be afraid to try new brands, just do your homework by reading reviews and buying what you like. And, finally, if you are one of #BFFFs already (best fashion friend forever), then you will have heard our many past episodes introducing new designers and creators whom we love and celebrate as small business owners and/or their commitment to sustainable fashion: 1.) Paridaez (women's fashion) | Episode 26 2.) Amanda Pearl Jewelry | Episode 37 3.) Vienne Milano Stockings | Episode 42 4.) Titov Label Lingerie | Episode 44 5.)
