Sometimes, the story of the founder can be just as interesting as the story of the marketplace. In the case of Trisha Bantigue, this is certainly the case. Trisha was born in the Philippines, raised by her grandparents, immigrated to the US at age 10, and paid her way through college by competing in pageants. Today, she is the CEO and co-founder of Queenly, a marketplace for formal dresses. Queenly is backed by prestigious investors such as YCombinator and Andreessen Horowitz.Though Two-sided does not focus on founder stories, Trisha's journey is pivotal in the story of Queenly. The idea behind the platform comes from Trisha's own pageant experience. And marketplaces in their early stages need non-scalable tactics; in other words, perseverance. Trisha had that in plenty. In the latest episode of Two-sided, Trisha tells Sjoerd how Queenly got to where it is now: Launching the app and getting absolutely no traction for months. The difficulty of estimating your own worth as a first-time founder. The challenge of talking to investors in a way that makes them understand your vision and punctures their preconceptions. How to deal with incredible setbacks, and turn them around for the better. Overall, a truly inspiring story for all of the marketplace founders listening
A word on a common phenomenon in Christian circles and the spiritual community.
In an article titled, ‘Secondhand Luxury: Opportunity or Threat' BoF raises the question: what's the right path for brands? Buyback and then resell their own goods, or route them to resale sites, which give brands a cut of sales? The growth of resale is all about brands... imagine shopping on The Real Real if none of the items were branded. Customers are shifting their behavior toward resale based on affording brands they otherwise could not access. This in turn creates both threats and opportunities for brands themselves as BoF points out.Historically, brands have been concerned about the cannibalization of new sales, a concern that a recent Boston Consulting Group (BCG) study found to be unfounded. BCG data shows that the secondary market actually stimulates sales of new luxury goods. Additionally, the study found 71% of buyers of pre-owned items tended to buy products and brands they could not afford new. This suggests that secondhand products widen the market for high-end brands and can serve as potential gateways for first-time buyers. As The Sourcing Journal piece, ‘Take-Back Programs Are Gaining Steam. Do They Actually Work?' pointed out, not all resale programs are based on profitable business models for trade-in. Trade-in models where brands only benefit from gift cards are essentially marketing programs. There are also risks for brands that solely rely on 3rd party marketplaces to maintain brand standards and authentication. WWD's this week covered Vestiaire Collective's offer to work with luxury brands to learn and train authenticators to spot details on the most sought-after items. Bloomberg Law went deeper into the increased risk to brand IP and commented that such partnerships may allow brands to participate in the product authentication process, which helps to prevent brand dilution while still enjoying the benefits of participating in the circular economy.Brand IP is the ‘key to the castle' for a brand. Brands should be wary about educating anyone beyond the obvious signs of fake products as they will lose control. As the Bloomberg article rightly points out, we will get to a point where brands will use technology to track and identify fraudulent items but we are 5+ years away. In the meanwhile, brands can be strategic about 3rd party marketplaces while making sure their long-term needs are being met as the secondary market grows.A good example of this was The Real Real's partnership with 11 Honoré. @11 Honeré and visionary founder Patrick Herning have been pioneering a path to more inclusive sizing for luxury. The partnership with The Real Real will further this mission by adding some 430 styles of extended-size luxury items to its range of consigned goods and bring awareness to 11 Honeré.It's key for brands to realize the importance of their items in the secondary market as the market grows. In the end, there is no substitute for owning your future as a brand, and in this case, that involves engaging in the trade-in and resale of your products. The So What-There is no substitute for brands to stay close to their customers by buying back and reselling their items.-Brands need to look after their own long-term interests including protecting their IP. Nobody will protect that other than the brand.Resources:Footwear News | How Trove's New CEO Gayle Tait Is Helping Brands Like Allbirds & On to Resell Used MerchandiseFootwear NewsAfter taking over as CEO of Trove, Gayle Tait is focused on creating ways to make the secondhand marketplace a more profitable business for retailers and brands. As the appetite to make a positive impact on the environment increases with consumers, retailers and brands like Allbirds and On are turning to Trove for a profitable way to scale their recommerce programs.Apparel brands must note promising resale growth in APACJust-StyleGlobalData reported that the apparel market in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region is expected to reach a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.3% between 2020-2025, with 27% of shoppers intending to purchase clothing via resale in the next 12 months. With consumers in APAC becoming increasingly more aware of the environmental impact of the fashion industry, will their favorite brands and retailers implement sustainable initiatives in time to keep their business?WWD | It's a Start: The RealReal Extends it's Size Offerings With 11 Honore PartnershipWWDFrom Jimmy Choo to 11 Honore, The RealReal is making sure that it has something for everyone. For its newest partnership with 11 Honore, The RealReal will add 430 styles in inclusive sizes. Shoppers that consign plus size apparel within the next six months will receive 30% off their complete transaction.Glossy | Brands are pitching resale as an affordable holiday alternativeGlossyBrands are seeing the value of resale and adjusting their marketing holiday season campaigns accordingly. For example, Queenly had a viral TikTok that got over 2 million views, where they offered a referral program for every new customer. Recurate's Peak Design, which sells handbags, said this Black Friday they are putting all of their focus on resale after a very successful Earth Day campaign, where they saw a 600% increase without decline in regular sales.Vogue Business | Fast Fashion enters the resale game, but don't call it sustainabilityVogue BusinessIs launching a resale platform without reducing your overall output truly sustainable? Many would say no. Big fast fashion brands like Shein, Zara, and Pretty Little Thing are eager to enter the resale space, launching pre-loved marketplaces directly on their websites, but critics are saying that if these brands actually wanted to be sustainable, they'd up the quality of their garments. Vestiaire Collective Talks Trust, Tradesy, and Fighting Fast FashionWWDVestiaire introduced its first ever trust report, highlighting its verification process, counterfeit detection rate and many other impressive achievements. Vestiaire Collective's mission is to be the most trusted resale platform, and by sharing this report, it is aiming to increase its transparency and brand image within its community. There's nothing circular or sustainable about Shein's new resale platformDAZEDShein released a pre-loved marketplace (Shein Exchange) with the false promise to create a cultural movement of circularity for its community. The marketplace is nothing more than a facade behind an alternative motive to promote more extraction, more production, more waste, and more profit. How Fashion Brands Can Protect Their IP in the Recommerce MarketBloomberg LawAs the recommerce market grows increasingly more important to consumers, brands need to adjust their sustainability metrics, while maintaining brand authenticity and avoiding counterfeits. Retailers and brands are turning to recommerce partnerships, blockchain, and negotiated agreements that help protect the brand's IP. The Business of Fashion | Secondhand Luxury: Opportunity or ThreatBOFThere is a disconnect in the booming secondhand luxury market. Brands such as Balenciaga and Gucci are truly leaning into the secondhand movement with the creation of resale marketplaces. On the other hand, brands including Chanel and Hermès are still discouraged to adopt resale models in fear that this will drive their normal customer base away from in-store shopping. Sourcing Journal | Take-Back Programs Are Gaining Steam. Do They Actually Work?Sourcing Journal As many brands and retailers join the fight against climate change through circular and sustainable programs, the true lift is daunting. The underlying bias around these intiatives is that production and consumption will go down as these new business models arise around the care and circulation of used items. However, that is not the case as it's unclear if resale and takeback programs, are providing the solution they claim to be.

But despite the fact that you might be rocking sweats over slacks, Queenly co-founders Trisha Bantigue and Kathy Zhou say that they had half a million in sales last year, and over 100,000 people visit their website every day.“So many women bought dresses to just dress up and feel normal at home when everything else around the world was not,” Bantigue said. “It helped them feel grounded and stabilize themselves in this crazy chaotic pandemic environment.” The canceled events have also found new homes, such as Zoom weddings, Twitch pageants, socially distant proms, and graduation car parades. This is our Wednesday show, the time of the week when we niche down to a single topic. Today? Fashion.Natasha and Danny and Alex got together to dig into the world of fashion resale and rental. It's no small market, giving birth to both public companies, unicorns, and startups. Most recently, well-known fashion rental player Rent the Runway filed to go public, giving us a window in its own numbers. Those figures led us to a few questions about how best to go about making money from clothes in a retail context. From our chat:Selling vs. Renting vs. Reselling: To start, we wanted to help you group startups into three buckets: those who sell customers to people, those who rent goods to customers, and those who resell pre-owned goods to customers.Rent the Runway's numbers: We had some issues with Rent the Runway's business model given that it appears that the company is simply underpricing its clothing items given its cost structure. How Wall Street will price the company, or whether Rent the Runway is hoping to sell to a larger company came into the conversation.Who else should we have an eye on: To close, Natasha detailed a number of startups including Queenly, Curtsy and Rebag. Oh, and Depop (which recently sold to Etsy $1.6 billion).Startups are tearing up old retail models, which we are here for. We are less here for adjusted EBITDA that reads like magical realism.

Key Insights: Many of us get fixated on being a certain size or shape, while largely ignoring self-care or engaging in practices that improve our health, energy, and vitality. If this is you, just know you deserve more than trying to get yourself to fit into a certain size. You're worthy of your love, of which self-care is a direct reflection. Ironically, those of us who are fitness or health professionals can be particularly prone to obsession around dieting, food restriction, excessive exercise, and the like. So there's an opportunity to ask ourselves: are we engaging in these activities out of self-love? If not, we must cultivate the wisdom to refine our approach and learn to give our bodies what they need and want. We've all heard it before, but in order to help others, we truly do have to learn how to walk our talk. But please understand: this doesn't mean being perfect. It means opening up our hearts and moving from a place of self and other compassion. It means understanding we're all humans, here to learn and grow on this journey of life. Exercising and eating right for our unique bodies should create a kind of natural joy and happiness. If they're not, it's time to evaluate our approach. With his dual training in clinical nutrition and psychology, Marc David has spent the last 40 years helping people around the world heal their relationship with food. As the founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, he reaches millions each year through his books, speaking engagements, celebrated podcast series, and his internationally-acclaimed Mind Body Eating Coach Certification Training. And even if we lose, well, we'll keep doing our thing and making each other laugh.Natasha and Danny and Alex and Chris got together to chat through the week's biggest news. And like every other week in recent memory, it was a busy one. But we did our best to hit some M&A news, some unicorn news, and some funding news from smaller startups. Now, onto the show rundown, here's what we discussed:The Discord-Microsoft deal is done, and Danny has a hot take. My dahlings, this is going to be a quintessential Divine Living episode. At the moment, I’m on a mission to create more space in my life for receiving the awareness and insights that I need. And that ability to receive, that’s one of the greatest feminine arts. What does it even mean to receive? I’d say it’s all about noticing and taking in the things that nourish your soul. Whether that’s receiving flowers or reading your favorite books, the feminine means creating the space for beauty. However, somewhere along the lines, women picked up the lies that they couldn't receive, or began to felt awkward and uncomfortable around it. Deeming it as greedy, unnecessary, or 'not for them'...That ends today! This episode is here to help you release the guilt around the feminine art of receiving: whether it's receiving more romance, play, passion, exciting new ideas, a compliment, flowers, support in your business or around the house... it's time to open up to what's meant for you and graciously accept it!So where is your next uplevel for receiving? Is it in your personal relationships, your work, your relationship with yourself? Let me know, I would love to hear your stories!Key points discussedLet prayer be the first thing we do today (01:00)Receiving from the realm of the feminine (05:31)How to create beauty all around you (11:05)Give yourself permission to invest in YOU (13:16)Break your routines from time to time (16:24)What are the areas where you could receive more? This episode is inspired by a fellow Queen Joanne, who asked me about my wellness journey and how to lose weight like a Queen. Body transformation is a big topic for all us women, wherever you may be in your journey. So I really felt this is a relevant conversation that we need to have today!I’ve never had significant body issues, but over the years, I’ve definitely put on more weight than what felt comfortable... And this January, I decided to make it a #nonnegotiable to finally create my big body transformation story, which I’ll share all about in the episode. The process is still ongoing, and I’ve definitely continued to have my ups and downs, but you know what, I’m not going to be harsh on myself. As Queens, we get to start again every day, and I’m all in now. It’s all about making that decision. And when it comes to losing weight, don’t do it because someone tells you to do it. Do it because you give yourself permission to have the body that you will LOVE. Whatever that means for you. Don’t ever forget—we get to have it ALL. We can have great money, great relationships, great lifestyle, AND great bodies, all while having fun and enjoying our life. That’s the Queenly way. That’s divine living.Key points discussedA short prayer to start our journey with (00:52)My New Year’s body transformation decision (03:16)We got have it all, in every aspect of life (06:29)Let’s honor our bodies for all they’ve held (11:17)How my personal body journey went this year (13:17)For a Queen, every day is a day to start again (16:52)What my weight loss process looks like (18:44Form new habits and let them carry you through (24:57)Making the decision to lose weight like a Queen (28:12)Additional resourcesI’d be so grateful and honored to hear your takeaways! If you don’t know her already, Gabby is a New York Times bestselling author and a trailblazer in the world of spiritual entrepreneurship. Intro- Personal intro to show What is “Queendom Come?” and What is “The Age of the Divine Feminine?” Everything in the universe exists on a spectrum of energy. Two opposite poles on the spectrum, flow and containing (feminine and masculine) This show is a space for us to practice dancing together, between these poles Avoid toxic femininity How do we do this dance? What does it look like to be a Queen when you feel like shit? Energetic poles: Maro/Micro; individual/cosmic; institution/intuition; containment/flow; consistency/change; There is a dance of these energies happening within us all the time, and how do we tap into that, use it to create our Queendom? Whether you’re a King or a Queen, there’s at least a little bit of Queenly energy in you, and this show is for anyone looking to nurture those energies within themselves It’s our time. It’s our time to learn how to do this dance with grace; and love, and play, and fun. So we can teach by example, by our fun, by our joy, by our play, the masculine in all of us to embrace some of that feminine practice, to embrace some of his own Queendom as we step into ours. By stepping into your own queendom, you give space for kings to rise, you show other queens that they can do it too; you start changing the shape of the world so that it is more round, more feminine in flow to balance millenial of twisted masculine energy. Every episode will include Personal update Interviews with bad ass reinas, and kings who love queens and want to grow the queendom with us BEAM+Flow questions, from my work helping people unwind chronic holding patterns, to help you step into the fullness of who you are. Spoken word (“Moment of Flow”) BIANCA JADE INTERVIEW Danielle Nottingham question: on a scale of 1-10 how hard is it to put on lashes? Strip Lashes are hard to apply. Buy the black glue because the white glue, even invisible glue, doesn’t fully dissolve. Black glue can be found at Sally Beauty and sometimes Sephora IG trick: apply black glue straight to lashline, and then apply strip lash on. Better because you’re not smudging the glue on the eyelid if you don’t get it just right. I use argan oil to my brows, and Bianca does too I use it soften my pubic hair, as a pube oil Pubic hair or no pubic hair? Let’s discuss (Listen to the podcast for more) Let’s talk about sex in your 30s and 40s Are the 30s the best decade for sex? Bianca and I met when she came in for a Brazilian Lymphatic Drainage session with me at HigherDOSE in Manhattan. BEAM+Flow (Body, Energy, Awareness, Movement and Flow) is my wellness company. Detox is a way of life, because there is an energy within us that is constantly being recycled and renewed. When we tap into that, amazing clarity flows through. How do you stay in flow while hustling without burning out? Everyone has their own approach, Bianca’s mantra is “Go the distance.” Mine is “See the magic.” “My way of being has turned off a lot of women and female friendships, because I have a lot of masculinity in my essence.” “My masculine energy helps me pay the bills, and keeps the brand growing.” Women don’t always respect masculine energies in other women, until those women are super successful and famous I asked Bianca how these former female friends would describe her? Blunt, aggressive, consumed with work--but these are friends who work in the same profession Bianca was able to “change my ways of being to accepting that the roles that don’t come truly were not meant for me” How to make peace with rejection or the unknown How to give something an awesome try and let it go THIS IS feminine energy We’re all a balancing act How did growing up in Saint Louis shape your Latinidad? Jew-tina, and the Jewish side dominated her upbringing Grew up identifying as white When other people can’t see it in us, we sometimes forget that we have it College is where she began shaping her Latina identity Now, it’s everything. Today we have a true hustle story. Our Guest, Trisha Bantigue is the CEO and Co-founder of Queenly, a marketplace for buying and selling formal gowns & dresses. But what’s more inspiring is Trisha’s journey to get to this point. She immigrated from the Philippines to the US at a very young age, and had to face quite a few challenges in her personal life. In spite of this she put herself through school at Berkeley and paid for it through many side gigs. One such side gig was modeling, which burgeoned into her participating & winning some serious pageants, including Miss California Earth in 2016, and Miss Asian Global in 2017. Trisha did all this, while working at tech companies like Google, FB & Uber. It was here, while modeling, she noticed a gap in the market to serve the large demand for pageant gowns & dresses & that became Queenly, a one stop shop for formalwear for women! Let's dive deeper into what it means to have Queenly Authenticity!
The first step to being authentic is to know yourself – to develop your self-awareness. You can become more self-aware by taking note of your thoughts, feelings, strengths and weaknesses. Examine your friendships and intimate relationships. Discovering what others think of you can add to your self-awareness as well.
One of the most exciting parts of living authentically as a queen is getting to design your life around the things you love most! In the last lesson, we talked about your values. Today, we’ll add your passions to your quest for self-discovery.
So far in this course, we’ve been guiding you through discovering who you really are. One way to truly know yourself is to get in touch with your own set of values.
In the last couple of lessons, you started to expand your knowledge of yourself. Who you are—your identity—is a powerful force in your life and speaks volumes to others who come into contact with you. Your personal identity includes more than just your thoughts and feelings. Today, we look at some other things that help make up your personal identity.

It’s the remarkable and often overlooked Eleanor of Castile who’s the star of this episode, not her famously ruthless husband, Edward I. She not only transformed a standard Norman motte and bailey structure into the elegant castle we know today; she brought some much-needed civilisation to the English court and established a precedent for women (ok, queens) to become major property owners in their own right.
