When you hear the story of how syphilis research was carried out in the United States in the 20th century, you'll probably start to understand why there is a history of mistrust of the medical establishment, especially among the African American community.  This episode details one of the bleakest and most shameful chapters in U.S. medical history, a time when ethics were cast aside at the expense of minority communities.  We'll talk about the Tuskegee Syphilis Study (aka Tuskegee Experiment) as well as the Guatemala syphilis experiments that preceded them.  Sources:For symptom confirmation: https://www.uptodate.com/contents/syphilis-epidemiology-pathophysiology-and-clinical-manifestations-in-patients-without-hiv?search=syphilis&source=search_result&selectedTitle=3~150&usage_type=default&display_rank=3#H10 UpToDate (paywall)Emily Blunt gets Syphilis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_English_(TV_series)Medical Microbiology, Chapter 36: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK7716/ Wikipedia Syphilis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SyphilisLong Article on Syphilis Origin: https://asm.org/Articles/2019/June/Revisiting-the-Great-Imitator,-Part-I-The-Origin-aRepublication of the AP study about Tuskeegee: https://apnews.com/article/business-science-health-race-and-ethnicity-syphilis-e9dd07eaa4e74052878a68132cd3803aBioethics statement on Guatamala Studies: https://bioethicsarchive.georgetown.edu/pcsbi/sites/default/files/Ethically%20Impossible%20(with%20linked%20historical%20documents)%202.7.13.pdfWikipedia on Guatemala Studies: Sponsor: Artery InkUse promo code LISTENTOPHP at Artery Ink's website to save 10%* on your order of $35 or more and show support for our show as well as for a homegrown, wonderful local company. A sick and twisted yet relevant conspiracy carried out by the us governments health department back in the 1930's. 399 African American men with syphilis were used like lab rats in a study for over 30 years in which they were left untreated for research and scientific purposes. Today this still effects the black population as they became hesitant of medical treatment which today includes these "shots" The same tactics and patterns are used to this day and although the remaining victims were compensated very poorly and an apology issued by Bill Clinton was issued. I fear that these types of experiments are still in use today.

SUMMARY On this podcast – host Aaron Cronk and guest ACTS Education Program Leader Nolan Hargis take you behind their most recent tour – The March: From Civil War to Civil Rights. The discussion walks listeners through the American Christian Tours tour program that focuses on the struggle for Civil Rights that occurred after the end of the Civil War and carried on.  The tour starts in Memphis and makes its way through the Deep South.  Some of the stops include Selma, Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuskeegee, and ends in Atlanta.  Different Civil Rights memorials are visited, instrumental churches, museums, and sites – even schools are taken in.  The tour also includes some Civil War sites along the way. Our second segment highlights Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  and his involvement in the Civil Rights movement.  Many of the sites along The March include places where Dr. King either pastored, let protests, the site of his assassination and finally his final resting place in Atlanta. Cronk's Corner will encourage you as Aaron focuses Dr. Kings message to us.  Something to think about as we remember Dr. King this coming weekend.  The podcast wraps up with a Call to Action. In this episode of By Any Means Necessary, hosts Sean Blackmon and Jacquie Luqman are joined by Robert Penner, a Milwaukee activist and contributor to Liberation News, to talk about the decisions by the US Supreme Court and Wisconsin Supreme Court to force Wisconsin to go ahead with in-person voting in today's primary elections, why the state's top elected leaders seem more interested in rigging the elections in favor of their political party than in protecting the electorate from the ongoing pandemic, how decades of racist policy have left Milwaukee one of the most segregated cities in America, and why the city's racialized populations are forced to bear the brunt of the effects of both voter disenfranchisement and the coronavirus. In the second segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Dr. Ron Daniels, Distinguished Lecturer Emeritus at York College, City University of New York and host of Vantage Point on WBAI, to talk about reports that Black communities are accounting for a disproportionate number of COVID-19 deaths in cities across the country, why the disparity is actually a product of decades of racist and classist public policy, and whether skepticism of health institutions (encouraged by the US government's long history of medical experimentation and exploitation of Black communities) is affecting efforts to combat the virus. In the third segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Maurice Carney, co-founder and Executive Director of Friends of the Congo, to talk about reports that many African nations are likely be devastated by the virus and measures taken to combat it, the threat the outbreak poses to the Democratic Republic of Congo both epidemiologically and economically, and how the intentional underdevelopment of the African continent leaves its people more vulnerable to the ravages of the virus.Later in the show, Sean and Jacquie are joined by social and civic innovation expert Kendrick Jackson to talk about the new measures banning certain utilities shutoffs just passed by a virtual meeting of the Washington, DC City Council, why the onus of social distancing seems to fall disproportionately on working class Black people, why--though many state-level officials have acted to postpone in-person voting--the Democratic Party is largely complicit in the push to go ahead with elections amid the pandemic, and whether Trump's stake in a hydroxychloroquine manufacturer may be motivating his ongoing attempts to hype the drug at his daily Coronavirus briefings.
