When former Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey joined us at our most recent Ideas We Should Steal Festival for a live taping of The Citizen's How to Really Run a City podcast, the crowd expected Ramsey to address just how, under the leadership of then-Mayor Michael Nutter, he oversaw a record low crime rate. Ramsey, after all, has more than 50 years of law enforcement knowledge and service. He co-chaired President Obama's Task Force on 21st Century Policing. He's currently the Principal Deputy Monitor for the Federal Consent Decrees in Baltimore and Cleveland, a law enforcement analyst for CNN, and a Distinguished Policy Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania School of Law. So in this episode, Ramsey and co-hosts Nutter, Kasim Reed, and Larry Platt lean into the tough questions: How much of a police chief's job is about reversing public opinion? What's the secret to making citizens feel safe in all corners of their city? And what's the most important trait any Mayor should look for when hiring a police chief? (Hint: It's not shooting accuracy.) Over the course of the rollicking episode, the hosts addressed these questions and more. And because you asked for it, Commissioner Ramsey agreed to join the podcast again in a few weeks, to answer the many questions we didn't have time for the first go around. So, buckle in for Part 1 here, then stay tuned for Part 2 of How to Really Run a City with Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey. We're excited to bring you both episodes of this meaningful conversation, because if we really want cities to thrive, first we have to make them safe. And if anyone can unlock the secrets for doing so, it's Ramsey.

Blue Ridge School graduate, Retired Sergeant in the U.S. Army, stay-at-home dad turned Community Outreach Coordinator and Student Recruiter for the University of Illinois Chez Veterans Center tells his story of a post-September 11th war with humor and zero regrets. Listen as Garrett talks about 130-degree days in full body armor, marrying his now wife of 17-plus-years on a whim just days before deployment, trying to build relationships with Iraqis while never knowing a good guy from a bad guy with an AK-47 and how it wasn't uncommon for women and children to literally become human bombs in the name of their religion. In a few months Garrett would see and experience more pain than most will see in a lifetime, yet he lives with no regrets. He lights up when he talks about coaching at area schools, his daughters and his wife, local attorney, Sami. He tears up when he talks about a fellow soldier and friend who could never recover from the injuries that Garrett sustained in an ambush—a severely broken jaw and a lost arm. His friend, Sonny, blamed himself to the point of no return. Through all this pain and remembrance, he still maintains a positive disposition as he recounts the way he always has to face the door at a restaurant in an effort to maintain vigilance. This Champaign-based father and son (in-law) duo shares much more than business ventures. At the time of this recording, Dan and Greg were celebrating their 2nd year “kidneyversary.” When Greg's kidneys were poisoned because of an undiagnosed prostate issue, family and friends around the globe stepped up to help in many ways.   Listen as they retell the story of Greg's dramatic health decline. A previously energetic and youthful Greg shares the moment things went down, literally, as he was dancing the Cha-Cha at a wedding and could not get up after “going down low.” From that point many diagnostic tests and complications would lead to complete kidney failure. His son-in-law would ultimately be a willing match for a kidney transplant. These entrepreneurs talk about the importance of faith, family, selflessness, fear of the unknown and putting your ultimate trust in a higher power.  You can hear the respect from Dan as he talks about protecting the patriarch of the family. You can hear the relief from Greg as his body and spirit continue to heal from months of poor health. When you are a mover and shaker and your energy is zapped, it's hard to accept the change of pace. Both men show vulnerability and a true love of family in this story with a happy ending........................................................................................... Please, please subscribe (so you know when new episodes drop) and share! Patrick is back from a wedding in California and has some stories. Shooby's wedding was fun, even if it was a long one and Patrick had to rent a tux. Tuxes are magical at making fat people look important. Of course there's also some complaints. Avelo airlines is a little nuts and their planes may be falling apart. ACE rental cars is ripping people off and the employees aren't quite sure if you need insurance. Artisan coffee shops need to get it together if they're going to walk around like their beans don't stink. The Santa Rosa airport is more tiny than you can imagine. Elon Musk has purchased Twitter, nothing has changed, and yet weak-minded dopes everywhere are losing their minds. ...

Tuxes, Dresses, Limos, spiked punch and broken condoms, it's Prom season again so that means it's time for another Prom themed horror movie. This week our date is the 2017 "Party Night". This indie slasher rides the line between not being terrible and not being very rememberable or very good, leaving it in the dreaded pit of forgeability.  The acting isn't that bad but its not good, the writing and plot are both straight from the horror movie 101 mold but on the plus side the kills and special effects are fairly decent with some uniqueness. However, one of its biggest flaws is that its supposed to be a Prom movie but there's no F*CKING PROM! But at the end of the night will "Party Night" be standing tall on stage as Prom Queen or will it be sitting alone crying on the bleachers? Listen in and find out.

They even have the option for you to purchase if you love the suit that much (which many guys do). For custom suits, a lot of my grooms love getting their suits from Suit Supply, which has shops in most metros. If you're near Rochester, New York, I highly recommend Adrian Jules. All of my grooms that have gotten a suit or tux there rave about it. And really, there's nothing more attractive on a guy than a made-to-measure suit that fits him perfectly.

What if we could use maps of cellular function to discover the mechanisms of psychiatric disorders? We sit down with Dr. Jeremy Willsey, a researcher in the Psychiatric Cell Map Initiative, who’s trying to do just that—understand the neural basis of Tourette Disorder by placing disorder-related mutations on a map of the cell. Hosted by Carlos Johnson-Cruz and Li Wang Produced by Anna Lipkin, Stephanie Wankowicz, Li Wang, and Carlos Johnson-Cruz Editing Help from the CTOR team Music used in this episode: “Scenery” and “Ode to the World” by Kai Engel “Bathed in Light” and “Unanswered Questions” by Kevin MacLeod “Frogs in Tuxes” and “Sweet and Clean” by Podington Bear “Ragtime Dance” by Scott Joplin

Prison. Assassins. Marionette dance parties. The original story of Pinocchio has it all. Of course, you know of Pinocchio and Geppetto, but did you know that Geppetto, in order to get the wood to make Pinocchio, had to chew on an old man's wig? Or that the original story had a shockingly brutal end, even for an 1800s children's tale? Check it out. This story is wild. The creature this time is a giant grasshopper who wants to have your kids over for dinner. And no, he's not being playfully ambiguous with that wording. He's going to eat your children and there's nothing you can do to stop him because he's a twelve foot tall grasshopper. -- Sponsors: I've been a happy Simplisafe customer for two years.
