In early January, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents from El Centro near San Diego launched a deportation raid in Kern County, more than six hours from their usual area of operation. The man behind the effort is Gregory Bovino, head of CBP's El Centro sector. He claimed the operation targeted criminals that were illegally in the US, but arrest data show that, of the nearly 80 people that were swept up by the agents out of El Centro, Border Patrol had an arrest record for just one individual. Ultra low-budget airliner, Avelo, is shuttering its Bay Area hub at Sonoma County's Charles M. Schultz Airport, after it got tapped by the Trump Administration to conduct mass deportation flights. One Sonoma County Supervisor is condemning the move, saying it would hurt the local economy in the long-run. U.S. Military Records Highest Aviation Accidents In A Decade; What Is The Major Cause Of Rising Incidents? The EurAsian Times says, “FY2024 was one of the worst aviation safety years for the US Army in a decade.” They cite statistics from the Aviation Division of the Directorate of Analysis and Prevention at the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center showing a “steady decline in mishap rates per 100,000 hours beginning in 2006.” FY2022 saw a record low of 0.50 Class A mishaps per 100,000 hours, but that rate doubled in 2023 and the FY2024 Class A mishap rate (1.90) was almost four times greater than FY2022. Air Wisconsin Halts Scheduled Flights, Future Uncertain American Airlines' 5-year contract with Air Wisconsin for regional capacity has ended. The April 3, 2025 breakup was announced last January, when Air Wisconsin President and CEO Robert Binns noted that the airline is making a “strategic shift” to focus on government-subsidized Essential Air Service flying and charter operations. This week, the pizza makers from Pepe's Modern, Sally's and many other area favorites boarded a charter Avelo flight to Washington DC to declare New Haven as the pizza capital of the U.S. It comes one week after the state launched a new marketing plan to highlight our state's oyster industry (CT Oyster Trail.) Avelo Airlines just announced another four flight options out of New Haven. Breeze announced more direct flights earlier this year up at Bradley Airport. Joshua Perry and his wife Jarhonda of Orlando found riding on Avelo Airlines exciting as it celebrated its 100th day of operating at Mobile International Airport on Sept. 7. BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Brownsville Mayor John Cowen says Avelo Airlines could make his city its base of operations in Texas.“Hopefully, one day, Brownsville will be a base for them,” Cowen told the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service.Asked what he meant by “base,” Cowen said: “Having their crew operate out of here. Instead of the other cities that we fly to.”Avelo Airlines is headquartered in Houston but Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport is the only city it flies out of in the Lone Star State.The huge success of its first routes out of Brownsville, non-stop to Burbank, California, and Orlando, Florida, helped persuaded Avelo to add Las Vegas as another destination. On this episode of the Connected Aviation Intelligence Podcast, JP Floyd, Air Canada 787 Pilot and Senior Director of Compliance and Standards for Aero HygenX, joins to discuss autonomous aircraft disinfection technology. Aero HygenX, is a Canadian tech start-up founded by pilots and experts in aircraft maintenance. The company has developed an autonomous robot called "Ray" that uses UV-C technology and motion-sensors to self-navigate the aircraft cabin while disinfecting air and surfaces throughout. Several airlines including Avelo, Ethiopian Airlines and Zambia Airways have adopted their robot disinfection technology. CBIA BizCast host Ali Warshavsky speaks with Travis Christ, chief marketing officer for Avelo Air, about the airline maintaining its low-fare strategy as inflation drives up the cost of fuel and other supplies. Avelo launched in 2021 in Burbank, California, and made its maiden flight from Connecticut's Tweed New Haven Airport last November.
