Hi everyone, this next work in the series for guitar and various instruments features a dialogue between 2 Guitars. In this composition I feature what I believe is the most important compositional technique in all genres of music - "Repetition and repetition with variation". In addition the use of petal tones and drones , notes sustained or repeated under the middle or above the music. The third technique highlighted is the Ostinato - A phrase motive riff repeated over and over creating an hypnotic force a foundation on which all else is built - think of Stravinsky, Schoenberg, every heavy metal song - actually all styles of music. Hope you enjoy the piece all my best Joe

Deploração was written in autumn 2020 for the concert project "Lamenti" by the newly founded guitar duo santorsa~pereyra. It was premiered on Mar 26th, 2021 at "Schwere Reiter" in Munich. The piece is not a duo in the conventional sense. The instruments neither engage in a musical dialogue nor accompany each other. Instead, the two guitars together form a meta-instrument. On it, two musicians play a solo piece together as a collective mourning work. One guitarist performs only bottleneck glissandi with the right hand (the left is used solely for muting). The other plucks only the low E string in a wide variety of sound colors and articulations. The idea of lament is transformed into musical gestures. "Always rolling the same stone up the same mountain" (Heiner Müller) - a truly Sisyphean task! The continual ascent and descent take place with relentless rigor. As if the screw of pain and sorrow is being turned tighter and tighter - until the lament and its sound finally die away. More info and score for download: https://www.essl.at/works/deploracao.html
It is the wood that the rock greats have sworn by—swamp ash, in the form of their Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars—for over 70 years. If you've ever listened to rock, you've probably heard a swamp ash, solid body guitar. But now, climate change is threatening the wood that helped build rock and roll. In today's podcast, veteran guitarist Jim Campilongo takes us through the finer points of swamp ash and what it would mean to lose it. Bonus material: Here's Jim showing the difference between the sound of a solid body swamp ash guitar and a hollow body one. And a little about Jim latest project: Campilongo teams up with longtime collaborator Luca Benedetti on the album, " Two Guitars ." Check it out.
Country-jazz master Jim Campilongo talks about the 3D-chess level challenges—and resulting clarity—of recording the sparse-but-dynamic Two Guitars, with Luca Benedetti. Jim Campilongo's name is synonymous with "Telecaster-master". He is often found on lists of the finest musicians to ever touch a Tele, and with good reason, as his playing both stretches and dismantles any perceived boundaries of the instrument. Originally from Costa Rica and Iran respectively, Jorge Strunz and Ardeshir Farah have brought the musical influences of their native lands into their highly virtuosic, rhythmic, and improvisation-rich original instrumental compositions, inspiring fans and many guitarists worldwide. Their meeting in 1979 in Los Angeles, where they are still based, marked the first time that Latin American and Middle Eastern music, along with other important elements, came together on the guitar. Our conversation touches on all of these points and more. Enjoy! This is the audio for our video here: https://youtu.be/YSf3m9siUwo In this episode we take a very gentle stroll through some of the issues you might face when there are two guitars in the band. Clearly this is an almost endless topic so we’re starting with the really basic stuff. We’ve all been there with volume struggles, tones not working together, poor definition of parts… and worse than all of that: not knowing what to do about it. So Dan and I talk through some ideas that may help before indulging in some petit jammagé at the end. Where the gremlins begin… SORRY ABOUT THE DEAD CAMERASWe had a massive whoopsie-daisy in this episode with cameras. Particularly annoying as we are actually doing something different and no doubt you’ll assume there’s some kind of foul play going on. It's not the case, we just lost media from two cards. Arrrrggggg!!!!Before the cameras die, Mick’s guitar is panned slightly left; Dan’s slightly right. During the jams however you’ll hear Mick right and Dan left because that makes more sense when you’re looking at our pedalboards. We didn't edit the jams at all so they are a bit meandering. We left it all in as the sounds are interesting even if the playing isn't ha! HOW DID YOU MAKE THE BACKING TRACKS?I used the Drummer in Apple Logic to create some grooves. Then I called up the loop library in and simply dragged in some bass parts. During the filming I was playing it from my laptop over our PA speakers, enabling Dan and I to jam over. I then simply put the tracks underneath the show audio, lined it up, and did a super basic mix. That’s it. Enjoy the episode, we hope it helps spark some ideas and inspiration to play with other humans! (Or machines, ahem). London-based guitar duo, Eden-Stell stopped by my place in L.A. for a coffee and a chat during their last U.S. tour. Mark Eden and Chris Stell have been playing as a guitar duo for more than two decades and today have an impressive catalog of recordings encompassing a wide range of musical styles and time periods. They are frequently invited to give concerts and perform at festivals all over the world. They are the first guitarists since Julian Bream to receive Editor's Choice in Gramophone magazine for their album “Follow The Star,” a lovely set of works composed by Stephen Dodgson. While they were here we talked about their time studying with the Assad Brothers, about some of their newest projects, about their inspiring experiences with outreach, their particular take on playing duets, and lots more. During the show you will hear an excerpt of Stephen Dodgson's piece written specifically for Eden-Stell, his Concertino for Two Guitars and Strings “Les Dentelles,” as well as Sergio Assad's Baiao, works by Rameau and Couperin, and you'll get a sneak peak at Johaness Moller's new duet When Buds Are Breaking. Enjoy!
